Creating an itinerary for Vietnam can be a bit complex as it’s a vast country with many beautiful places to choose from. We’ve put together an exciting itinerary full of tips that will take you to all the highlights of Vietnam. You’ll journey through the expansive rice terraces in the north, the impressive Halong Bay, vibrant cities, charming Hoi An, and the authentic Mekong Delta. If you have more time, we’ll also suggest a few other beautiful destinations at the bottom that you can add to or adjust in your itinerary.

Determining the Direction of Your Vietnam Itinerary

When traveling through Vietnam, you can choose to visit the north, the south, or both. Most travelers opt to explore both the north and the south to experience the country’s diversity fully. With this itinerary, you’ll be covering the entire country.

You can start your journey in either Hanoi in the north or Ho Chi Minh City in the south, as both cities have international airports. Generally, people find the north of Vietnam a bit more picturesque than the south, which you can consider when deciding on your travel direction. Another factor to consider is the price of flight tickets. Sometimes, it’s cheaper to fly to Hanoi, and other times, it’s more affordable to choose Ho Chi Minh City. Ideally, you can fly into one city and depart from the other, saving you the need for an additional domestic flight. We’ve chosen to plan the itinerary from north to south, but you can easily reverse it to fit your preferences.

How Does Transportation Work in Vietnam?

Vietnam stretches for about 1,600 kilometers (994 miles) from the extreme north to the far south. You can travel across Vietnam by bus, train, or airplane, depending on the route. Buses run between all destinations, and for longer journeys, you can often take a night bus or night train. This way, you can sleep comfortably, save money on hotels, and find it less tiring than traveling during the day. For longer distances, you can also opt for a flight, although this is usually a bit more expensive. You can arrange transportation locally or book online. The advantage of booking online is that you can compare all providers and options, read reviews, and be sure you’re paying a fair price.

Tip: We’ve written separate articles about almost all the places on this Vietnam itinerary, providing tips for the most enjoyable activities and how to get there from various other destinations. These articles include all the options and travel durations.

How Many Weeks Do You Need for This Vietnam Itinerary?

To complete this entire Vietnam itinerary, you’ll need about three weeks. If you have less time, you can skip some destinations. If you have more time or want to explore more of the north, you’ll find additional tips for beautiful destinations to expand your itinerary at the end of this article. Read our articles with tips for these destinations to easily decide how to allocate your days among the various places.

Hanoi

Hanoi is the bustling capital of Vietnam and a great introduction to the country due to its abundance of exciting activities and attractions. You may experience a bit of a cultural shock as Hanoi is quite a chaotic city. On every street corner, you’ll find street food stalls, and scooters zoom in all directions around you. Start your journey with a cool street food tour or seek tranquility in one of the many temples, such as the enchanting Temple of Literature. Curious about what else there is to do? Check out all the tips for Hanoi.

Sapa

After a few days getting used to Hanoi, it’s time to leave the hustle and bustle behind and travel to the green mountain village of Sapa. Sapa is located in the far north, nestled among mountains covered in gigantic rice terraces. It’s the perfect destination for a beautiful hike. Walk along viewpoints, through valleys with authentic villages, and take a dip in a waterfall. Make sure to also take a ride on the longest non-stop cable car in the world, then stand on the highest peak in Vietnam. Interested in what else there is to do? Read about the 10 best things to do in Sapa.

Note: It’s best to visit Sapa only from June to September. In May, farmers plant new rice, and from that point on, the rice terraces become greener. September offers the most beautiful views of the rice terraces. Sapa is not recommended in the winter months when it’s very cold, the landscapes are bare, and it’s often foggy.

Halong Bay & Cat Ba

Halong Bay is one of the most iconic destinations in Vietnam, thanks to its breathtaking landscapes. The rock formations, nearly 500 million years old, form an archipelago of thousands of small islands. These rocks were once part of a gigantic coral reef, and some are hundreds of feet high. Cat Ba is the largest island in Halong Bay and the most common base for visiting the bay. The best way to explore Halong Bay is on a one- or two-day cruise. Get on board the boat and enjoy the beauty that Halong Bay has to offer. It’s most enjoyable to join a cruise that also visits lesser-known spots. That’s how you experience the best of Halong Bay. Find out which one in the article with tips for Halong Bay.

Ninh Binh

Ninh Binh is an enchanting province and an absolute must-visit during your journey through Vietnam. Amidst the rock formations, sometimes towering up to 200 meters (656 feet), you’ll find green rice fields, rivers, lakes, and caves. In Ninh Binh, you’ll completely relax and experience the authentic countryside life of Vietnam. Hop on a bike or scooter and explore the winding roads that meander through the rice fields. The nature in Ninh Binh is breathtaking, and life there is delightfully uncomplicated. Among the rice fields, you’ll find the most beautiful accommodations, often with a spectacular view. All of this makes Ninh Binh one of the most enjoyable places on your Vietnam itinerary. Check out the tips for Ninh Binh to make the most of your visit.

Phong Nha

From here, your journey to Hoi An in central Vietnam begins. You can cover this long journey by night train or easily divide it into two parts by planning a visit to Phong Nha on your itinerary. Here, you can visit two impressive caves named Paradise Cave and Phong Nha Cave. You can rent a scooter and explore the caves on your own or book the combination tour where you visit both caves. This includes transportation, admission, and lunch.

Tip: In Phong Nha, you can stay at a special place called Karst Villas Phong Nha. From here, you’ll have a breathtaking view from the pool over the landscape.

Hoi An

Hoi An is the favorite city of most travelers in Vietnam. It’s a small town by Vietnamese standards that offers the best of both worlds. You’ll find the charm of the old town but also a beautiful beach, and within 15 minutes, you’ll be in the middle of rice fields. Here, you can seek both the hustle and tranquility. Hoi An exudes atmosphere and coziness with its beautiful historical houses, colorful lanterns, numerous excellent restaurants, and lovely shops. Curious about what Hoi An has to offer? I’ve listed the best things to do in Hoi An for you.

Ho Chi Minh City

If you’re visiting the southern part of Vietnam, you can’t miss Ho Chi Minh City. It’s the largest city in the country with a population of 9 million. Don’t spend too much time here because it’s not the most exciting city. District 1 is a popular district among travelers, and you’ll find most of the attractions, restaurants, bars, and hotels here. End your day in Ho Chi Minh City with a cocktail at one of the rooftop bars. From here, you’ll have a view of the entire metropolis as the sun slowly sets. Check out all the tips for Ho Chi Minh City.

Mekong Delta

After a day in Ho Chi Minh City, it’s time to escape the hustle and bustle, and the best way to do that is in the Mekong Delta. This is a unique water landscape consisting of hundreds of small rivers. People here mainly live on and along the water. You’ll find floating markets where various food items like coconuts, fish, meat, and fruit are traded. It’s a unique destination that you shouldn’t miss if you want to experience the real life of Vietnam. Cycle along the canals and over small bridges and wave to the friendly locals you’ll encounter everywhere. It’s best to stay on the outskirts of Can Tho. There, you’ll find some beautiful small-scale hotels located by the water where you can experience an oasis of tranquility. Read all the tips for the Mekong Delta to make the most of your visit.

Other Exciting Destinations for Your Vietnam Itinerary

For the above Vietnam itinerary, you’ll need about three weeks. This, of course, depends on your travel style and pace. If you want to customize or expand this itinerary, there are more exciting destinations in Vietnam to consider. You can choose to explore more of the north or the south. Below, we’ll suggest a few beautiful destinations that you can add to or adjust your Vietnam itinerary.

Phu Quoc

If you want to end your journey through Vietnam on a pristine white beach with azure blue waters, plan a few more days on the island of Phu Quoc on your itinerary. It’s located at the southernmost point of Vietnam, and you can fly there from Ho Chi Minh City, for example. As soon as you set foot on the island, the enjoyment begins. Go island hopping and snorkeling for a day or just relax at one of the beach clubs. If you have the time, Phu Quoc is a delightful way to end your trip! Check out all the tips for Phu Quoc to get a good impression of the island.

Ha Giang Loop

If you want to explore more of northern Vietnam in an adventurous way, Ha Giang is the perfect destination for this. Here, you can embark on the famous Ha Giang Loop by motorcycle, taking a cool road trip through various small villages. Along the way, you’ll be treated to spectacular views of the rugged mountain landscapes. You can rent a motorcycle yourself, or you can ride with an “easy rider,” which is a typical Vietnamese concept where you travel with a guide on the back of their motorcycle. This is often done in groups, making it a fun road trip with plenty of beautiful stops and enjoyable evenings. Check out all the tips for the Ha Giang Loop.

Cao Bang

In the far north, near the border of China, lies the lush province of Cao Bang. This province is quite remote, but the impressive Ban Gioc Waterfall and Phong Nam Valley make it well worth the trip. Here, you’ll truly venture off the beaten path, encountering few English speakers. There’s still much to discover, and it doesn’t get much more authentic than this. Check out our tips for Cao Bang to get a good sense of this unique destination.

Mui Ne

If you choose to travel overland from Hoi An to Ho Chi Minh City, a stop in Mui Ne is recommended. This way, you can split the journey in two and visit this fishing village with its vast sand dunes. It’s also a popular spot among surfers and windsurfers. Even if you have no experience with (wind)surfing, it can be fun to take a lesson here and brave the waves. Check out all the tips for Mui Ne if you want to add this stop to your southern Vietnam itinerary.

Traveling through Vietnam can be best described as versatile and diverse. Bike along narrow paths through vast green rice fields, sail by boat past massive limestone rock formations, and savor Vietnamese cuisine in a bustling city like Hanoi. While in the big cities, hundreds of scooters zoom by every minute, in the Vietnamese countryside, you’ll find complete tranquility. Whichever way you go in Vietnam, you’ll encounter vibrant markets, ancient pagodas, and colorful lanterns everywhere. Traveling through Vietnam is one big adventure. Before you hop on the plane, read these 12 tips to make the most of your journey through Vietnam!

#1 Best Time to Travel to Vietnam

Vietnam is a destination you can visit all year round. It’s an incredibly large country with different climatic zones. The dry season and the rainy season alternate in different regions. This means that when it’s the best time to travel to Northern Vietnam, it may not be the ideal season for Southern Vietnam. So, there isn’t one best time to travel for the entire country, but each season has its advantages and disadvantages. Generally, the best time for a trip through Vietnam is between May and October. Below, you’ll read about the differences and best times to travel for various regions in Vietnam.

Best Time to Travel to Northern Vietnam

Hanoi, Ha Giang, Cao Bang, Halong Bay, Sapa & Ninh Binh

If you want to admire the green rice fields of Northern Vietnam, the best period is from June to early October. This falls within the rainy season, but the rice fields are beautifully green during this time. The rainy season doesn’t mean it rains all day. Often, you’ll have a heavy shower in the morning or evening, and the rest of the day will be fine. Of course, you can have some bad luck and experience more rain. In September, the rice fields are at their most beautiful, with long, greenish-yellow rice. The far north of Vietnam experiences four seasons: spring, summer, autumn, and winter. From June to August, it’s warm (30ºC, 86°F), and from December to February, it’s cold (17ºC, 62,6°F). This applies to places like Ha Giang and Sapa. Other places in the north, a bit further south, such as Halong Bay, Hanoi, and Ninh Binh, are less chilly in the winter months and are easy to travel to.

Best Time to Travel to Central Vietnam

Phong Nha, Hoi An

In central Vietnam, it’s relatively warm throughout the year. December to February are the coldest months, with temperatures around 23ºC, 73,4°F. In the summer months, it can get hot, with temperatures around 30ºC, 86°F. The most rain in central Vietnam falls in September and October.

Best Time to Travel to Southern Vietnam

Mui Ne, Ho Chi Minh, Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc

Southern Vietnam has two seasons: the dry season and the rainy season. The dry season is from November to April, and the rainy season is from June to October. The temperatures in southern Vietnam are tropical all year round. Perfect for planning some beach days during your trip through Vietnam! April and May are the hottest months in Southern Vietnam.

#2 Negotiation is Part of the Game

In Vietnam, it’s perfectly normal to negotiate prices. As a traveler, you often pay more than locals, so to avoid overpaying, it’s essential to negotiate firmly. Think of it as a game that you play in a friendly and respectful manner. Reacting angrily or walking away during negotiations is highly unusual in Vietnamese culture and is considered impolite. With a bit of patience and a smile, you can often get a good deal.

Note: You cannot negotiate prices where fixed prices are in place. Fixed prices are found in places like supermarkets, massage parlors, and restaurants.

#3 Currency, ATMs, and Tipping in Vietnam

The local currency in Vietnam is the dong (VND), and when you arrive at the airport, cash will be one of the first things you need. There are always ATMs at the airport where you can withdraw money. Withdraw the maximum amount because you’ll pay a commission per transaction. In most destinations in Vietnam, you’ll find ATMs where you can withdraw Vietnamese dong. Places where this can be a bit more challenging are small villages around Sapa. Therefore, make sure you always travel to small villages with enough cash. Also, make sure you always have some small change with you to give tips. Tipping is not mandatory in Vietnam, but it is greatly appreciated. Most locals don’t earn much, and giving a little extra will put a big smile on their faces.

Tip: Download a currency exchange app on your phone so you can see the current value of the Vietnamese dong.

#4 Tips for Crossing Busy Roads

Traffic in Vietnam is entirely different and cannot be compared to the traffic we are used to at home. Vietnam is full of scooters, and in the big cities, it may seem impossible to cross the road as a pedestrian. With the following tips in mind, you’ll confidently cross the road.

 • When you want to cross the street, it’s a good idea to follow other pedestrians. If you find it really daunting, ask for help.
 • Look for a safe crossing place. Look out for crosswalks, pedestrian bridges, or traffic lights to cross.
 • Make sure you walk at a predictable pace while crossing. You’ll see that traffic anticipates your movements. Accidents happen when you do unexpected things like walking back or running. So, never do this!
 • Try to make eye contact with the driver coming towards you and check if they have seen you.

#5 You Need to Apply for a Visa for Vietnam

You must apply for an e-visa for Vietnam before your trip. You can do this best through the official website of the Vietnamese government. This website provides up-to-date information on visa regulations in Vietnam. These regulations can change, so I recommend reading the information and arranging your Vietnam visa through the official website before your trip.

#6 Learn a Few Vietnamese Words Before You Go

The Vietnamese language is based on Thai and Chinese, and differences in tones can completely change the meaning of words. There are a total of six intonations used in the Vietnamese language. You can imagine that it’s not an easy language to learn. Before traveling to Vietnam, it’s nice to learn a few basic words. Many Vietnamese people do not speak English, and they appreciate it when you make an effort to immerse yourself in their culture and language. This will definitely bring a smile to their faces.

Hello: Xin chào – pronounced as Sin chow
Goodbye: Tam Biêt – pronounced as Tam Biet
Yes: Vâng – pronounced as Vang
No: Không – pronounced as Kong
Thank you: Kåm On – pronounced as Kam own

#7 Use the Grab App to Order Taxis

In big cities like Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh, you can use Grab, which is the Asian equivalent of Uber. Ordering a taxi through Grab is incredibly easy, and you’ll never overpay. You can read reviews about the driver, and they know exactly where you want to go. Plus, you don’t have to negotiate the price anymore. If you want to use Grab, it’s a good idea to get a local SIM card with data. This way, you can order a taxi at any time. In addition to a taxi, you can also order a Grab scooter. You need a bit of courage for this because it’s quite an experience to zip through the busy traffic of Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh.

#8 Always Carry Some Toilet Paper While Traveling in Vietnam

It’s common for there to be no toilet paper in restrooms in Vietnam. Therefore, it’s a good idea to always have some toilet paper in your bag.

#9 Tips for Traveling by Bus in Vietnam

When traveling through Vietnam, you can’t avoid long bus journeys. Taking long bus journeys is the way to get around in Vietnam. Buses are incredibly cheap and often quite comfortable. For long distances, take a night bus. In a night bus, you can often lie completely flat, allowing you to sleep comfortably. A funny detail is that you always have to take off your shoes when boarding a night bus. You’ll be given clean slippers to keep the bus clean. Don’t forget to bring enough drinks and snacks when you’re on a long bus ride. Warm clothing is also essential because the air conditioning can be turned up to the max.

Tip: On 12Go, you can find all different buses and routes in Vietnam. You pay a fair price here, and you can read reviews about the bus company.

#10 Taste the Vietnamese Cuisine in Vietnam

Vietnamese cuisine consists of dishes with rice, noodles, meat or fish, combined with fresh vegetables and herbs. Vietnamese food is known for its surprising flavor sensations, always striving for the perfect balance between sweet, sour, and spicy. Vietnamese people love using herbs and sauces to refine their dishes. Taste various Vietnamese dishes during your trip and get to know Vietnamese cuisine.

Pho is a famous Vietnamese dish. It’s a rice noodle soup with meat, various vegetables, and herbs. You can eat this dish on almost every street corner in Vietnam. If you want something smaller, go for fresh Vietnamese spring rolls. In Vietnamese menus, these spring rolls are called Goi Cuon. My personal favorite is the famous Vietnamese sandwich called Banh Mi. It’s a baguette filled with meat and vegetables. A true classic in Vietnamese cuisine. It’s delicious as a snack, and there is often a vegetarian option available, filled with vegetables and egg. Enjoy!

#11 Plastic Waste in Vietnam

During my trip to Vietnam, I noticed that there is a lot of litter. Plastic can be found on the streets, in nature, and on the beaches. A local explained to me that the problem persists because many people are poorly educated and don’t receive information about the harmful consequences of plastic. I want to urge everyone to lend a (small) hand. If you’re going for a hike to a waterfall or spending a day at the beach, consider bringing a garbage bag and picking up litter you come across along the way. It feels great to leave a place cleaner than you found it. Of course, it also helps to use a reusable water bottle and avoid taking plastic bags from stores.

Hoi An is the favorite city in Vietnam for many travelers. That’s because it has a delightful atmosphere, beautiful historical houses are everywhere, and you can find numerous excellent restaurants and charming shops. Add to that the fact that you can stand amidst beautiful rice fields and the beach is never far away, all within a 15-minute walk from the city center. Hoi An is a small town by Vietnamese standards, which means that all the attractions are easily accessible on foot or by bicycle. Curious about what to do in Hoi An? I’ve explored the most beautiful places and the most enjoyable activities, and I’m here to share all my tips for Hoi An!

How to Travel to Hoi An?

Hoi An is located right in the middle of Vietnam, making it accessible from many different destinations. Da Nang International Airport is just 30 kilometers away from Hoi An. So, you can fly there from either North or South Vietnam or even from a neighboring country. Many people travel from Ninh Binh, Mui Ne, Phong Nha, or Ho Chi Minh City to Hoi An. Below, you can find information on how to travel from these destinations to Hoi An. If you’re traveling from a different destination, you can check out all the different routes.

From Phong Nha to Hoi An

By Train: First, take a bus or taxi to Dong Hoi train station, which is about an hour’s ride. From Dong Hoi, there are multiple daily trains, and after approximately 6 hours, you’ll arrive in Da Nang. Check out the current train schedules. From Da Nang, you can then take a bus or taxi, which will take another 45 minutes to reach Hoi An. So, there are a couple of transfers, but from the train, you can enjoy the most beautiful landscapes of the Hai Van Pass. If you take this route by bus, you’ll go through a tunnel, so you won’t see those views.

By Bus: If you choose to travel by bus from Phong Nha to Hoi An, you won’t need to transfer. The bus journey takes about 8 to 9 hours in total. Check out the current bus departure times and reserve your seat in advance.

Van Ninh Binh naar Hoi An

By Train: The distance between Ninh Binh and Hoi An is 700 kilometers, so this journey is quite long. The (night) train is the most comfortable way to travel from Ninh Binh to Hoi An. From Ninh Binh train station, a train departs that will take you to Da Nang in approximately 14 hours. The train offers various classes, and it is recommended to reserve a sleeper cabin. Check out all the train departure times and book your ticket in advance to secure a good spot on the train. In Da Nang, you can take a bus or taxi, and it’s another 45 minutes to Hoi An.

By Plane: If you have a bit more budget and don’t want to undertake a long bus or train journey, flying is also an option. You can first take a bus to Hanoi and then fly from there to Da Nang. In Da Nang, you can take a bus or taxi, and it’s still a 45-minute drive to Hoi An. Check out all the flights from Hanoi to Da Nang.

By Bus: There are buses from Ninh Binh to Hoi An, but this is a less comfortable option compared to the train. The bus journey takes approximately 15 to 16 hours. Check the different bus companies and departure times.

From Mui Ne to Hoi An

By Night Train: The night train is a good choice for traveling from Mui Ne to Hoi An. The night train departs from Binh Thuan, so you’ll first need to travel from Mui Ne to the Binh Thuan train station, which is about an hour’s drive. In Binh Thuan, you’ll board the night train that will take you to Da Nang in approximately 13 to 15 hours. To have the most comfortable journey, it’s advisable to reserve a first or second-class sleeper cabin. Once you arrive in Da Nang, it’s just a short drive of about an hour to Hoi An.

By Plane: If you prefer flying, you can take a flight from Ho Chi Minh City to Da Nang. So, first, you’ll need to travel from Mui Ne to Ho Chi Minh City Airport, which is 200 kilometers and takes about 3 hours. From Ho Chi Minh City, multiple airlines offer direct flights to Da Nang, and tickets often cost around $50 one way. Compare flights here.

By Bus: Bus rides are available from Mui Ne to Hoi An, but the bus is certainly not the most comfortable way to cover this route, as it takes approximately 18 hours. If you have no other choice, you can check the current departure times and reserve a spot on the bus in advance.

From Ho Chi Minh City to Hoi An

By Plane: Flying is the fastest way to travel this route. You can fly directly from Ho Chi Minh City to Da Nang Airport. Compare all flights.

By Train: It’s also possible to travel by train, but the train journey takes between 17 and 19 hours. It’s advisable to reserve a sleeper cabin for a more comfortable journey. Check out all departure times and book your train ticket in advance.

What to Do in Hoi An?

There is no shortage of fun attractions and activities in Hoi An. Whether you’re interested in culture, relaxation, or adventure, there’s something for everyone. Below, you’ll find the best tips for visiting Hoi An.

Explore the Countryside of Hoi An with a Bike Tour

A fantastic way to explore the countryside around Hoi An is with this bike tour. During the bike tour, you’ll venture off the beaten path and get to know the real life of the Vietnamese people. You’ll visit places you wouldn’t easily find on your own and gain a unique insight into local life.

During the bike tour, you’ll make several stops, including one at a family-run business where they make rattan mats. At the next stop, you’ll learn how to weave the typical Vietnamese fisher baskets. You’ll even get the chance to paddle in these fisher baskets yourself, and let me tell you, it’s not easy to maintain your balance! The bike tour is guided by enthusiastic guides who speak good English and are happy to answer all your questions about local life in Vietnam. This was definitely one of the most enjoyable things to do in Hoi An for me!

Explore the Old Town of Hoi An

Thanks to its perfect seaside location, Hoi An was an important trading port from the 15th to the 19th century. In the historic center, you can still find many old trading houses from that era, often adorned with richly decorated facades. This part of Hoi An has been well-preserved and has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1999. Visit the old town both during the day and in the evening. In the evening, it becomes incredibly atmospheric with countless colorful lanterns.

Tip: In the historic center, you’ll also find a few remarkable attractions like the Japanese Bridge and the Hoi Quan Phuoc Kien Temple. You can learn more about them in the following paragraphs. To access some of the attractions in the old town, you’ll need to purchase an entrance ticket, which you can obtain at the yellow ticket booths.

Stroll on the Cau Temple – the Japanese Bridge

The Cau Temple, also known as the Japanese Bridge, was built in the 16th century and is one of the most famous attractions in Hoi An’s old town. The 18-meter-long bridge features graceful arches, intricate wood carvings, and colorful decorations. In the middle of the bridge, you’ll find a small Buddhist temple. It’s quite small and dark, so you might easily overlook it, but it’s a shame to miss this unique place.

Visit the Chinese Temple Hoi Quan Phuoc Kien

Hoi Quan Phuoc Kien is a Chinese temple surrounded by large flower pots filled with beautiful colorful flowers. In my opinion, this is one of the most beautiful temples in Hoi An, mainly due to the bright red colors of the woodwork combined with green roof tiles and golden details. Inside the temple, the entire ceiling is covered in incense. It is lit to appease the gods.

Enjoy Cocktails and Relax on An Bang Beach

Hop on a bike and cruise from the old town in Hoi An to An Bang Beach, which takes about 20 minutes. I must mention that you shouldn’t expect a pristine white sandy beach, but An Bang Beach is certainly a nice place to escape city life and take a refreshing dip in the sea. Dolphin Kitchen and Bar is a fun beachfront spot to grab a bite to eat and enjoy a cold beer or a refreshing cocktail. You can sit on the terrace or relax on one of the loungers.

Must-do: Learn Vietnamese Cooking with an Authentic Cooking Class

Vietnamese cuisine is world-famous, and that’s why it’s a lot of fun to take a cooking class here. Before my trip, I searched extensively for the best cooking class in Vietnam, and I can confidently say that I found the absolute best one. With this authentic cooking class, you’ll join Thom, a lovely woman who was born and raised in Hoi An. She welcomes you to her home, which is about a 25-minute boat ride from Hoi An.

After the boat ride, you’ll start with a visit to the local market. Here, you’ll get a glimpse of authentic Vietnamese life, learn about the products, and purchase all the necessary ingredients for the cooking class. Afterward, it’s time to head to Thom’s house, where you’ll see how rice milk and rice paper are made. Pay close attention because you’ll be making these yourself, as you’ll need them later to prepare your dishes.

During the cooking class, Thom will tell you all about Vietnamese cuisine and why food is so important in Vietnamese culture. In total, you’ll prepare four different dishes, including the delicious Banh Xeo, a filled rice pancake. At the end of the cooking class, you’ll receive a small cookbook with the Vietnamese dishes you prepared that day. Are you a vegetarian? That’s not a problem, but be sure to mention it in the comments during the booking process.

Tip: You can also combine this cooking class with the bike tour mentioned earlier in this article in one tour. It’s ideal for when you have limited time in Hoi An, and it’s also a bit cheaper.

Visit Hoi An’s Central Market

Hoi An’s Central Market is always bustling with activity. This is because Vietnamese people go to the market separately for each meal to buy the freshest ingredients. You’ll be amazed as food is prepared on the spot, a wide variety of items are for sale, and lively negotiations take place. At the market, you can find fresh vegetables and fruits, meat and fish, as well as items like rattan baskets and flowers. The best time to visit Hoi An’s Central Market is early in the morning.

Tip: Keep in mind that taking photos of locals and their market stalls without making a purchase or asking for permission beforehand may not always be appreciated.

Stroll through Hoi An Night Market

While the Central Market caters to locals, the Hoi An Night Market is particularly popular among travelers. However, this doesn’t make it any less enjoyable, as the Hoi An Night Market has a wonderful atmosphere. It’s even one of the most popular evening markets in Vietnam. The market is located on a beautiful street by the water, adorned with numerous glowing lanterns. Especially in the dark, it’s very atmospheric and cozy. You can enjoy a meal here and grab a nice souvenir. Items here are often more affordable than in stores in Hoi An’s old town.

Capture a Beautiful Photo at Ba Mu Temple Gate

Right in the heart of Hoi An’s old town lies the stunning Ba Mu Temple. The temple was built in 1926 and is adorned with beautiful details. In front of the temple, there’s a large pond, which can create a reflection of the temple when there’s little wind. It’s perfect for taking a beautiful photo!

Admire Artworks at the Precious Heritage Art Gallery Museum

Visiting the Precious Art Gallery Museum is one of the most enjoyable things to do in Hoi An if you love photography and culture. The museum has multiple floors and showcases the beautiful work of photographer Réhahn Steer. He has traveled to the far corners of Asia for years, where he photographed many ethnic tribes. These impressive photos are now on display at the Precious Heritage Art Gallery Museum. The exhibition is called The Giving Back Project, and a significant portion of the proceeds from the exhibition goes to the tribes he photographed, supporting various initiatives, including education. If you want to support his work, you can purchase a postcard, artwork, or book.

Best Restaurants in Hoi An

In addition to its many beautiful attractions, Hoi An is also home to numerous excellent restaurants and cafes. The following restaurants stand out:

Reaching Out Tea House: In this beautiful teahouse, people with hearing impairments work. It’s a great place to enjoy a delicious cup of tea.

Phi Banh Mi: Here, you can find the tastiest Vietnamese banh mi sandwiches in Hoi An. Ideal for a quick and budget-friendly lunch!

Nourish Eatery: For a healthy breakfast or tasty lunch, this is the place to go. Order a smoothie bowl or opt for a falafel sandwich. It’s also suitable for vegetarians.

Minh Hien Vegetarian Restaurant: For your daily dose of vitamins, this vegetarian restaurant is the right choice. You can order delicious Vietnamese dishes with plenty of fresh vegetables.

Rosie’s Cafe: This trendy spot serves all-day breakfast options, including healthy pancakes, yogurt with granola, and avocado toast.

MIX Restaurant: If you’re not in the mood for Vietnamese cuisine, head to this Greek restaurant. It offers typical Greek dishes like moussaka and souvlaki, with plenty of options for vegetarians.

Baba’s Kitchen: This fantastic Indian restaurant is located in the heart of Hoi An’s old town. The ambiance might be a bit casual, but the delicious food more than makes up for it!

Lim Dining Room: This is the place to go for delicious pizzas and pastas. It’s slightly more expensive than most restaurants in Hoi An, but it’s worth it if you’re looking for a cozy dining experience. The terrace is very atmospheric and perfect for a romantic dinner.

Our Favorite Places to Stay in Hoi An

If you prefer to stay at a cozy and affordable hostel near the beach, then Wanderlust is the place for you. It’s a 15-minute bike ride from Hoi An’s old town and just a few hundred meters from the beach. Perfect for those who want to spend some time by the sea. The hostel offers a nice bar, a swimming pool, a foosball table, and a projector for evening movies. Wanderlust is run by a lovely family who go out of their way to make your stay as enjoyable as possible.

If you’re looking for a bit more luxury, you can count on a delightful stay at Blooms Boutique Village. It’s conveniently located between the old town and the beach, and there are free bicycles available for guests. The hotel features a large swimming pool, a beautiful garden, and a great overall atmosphere. The rooms are well-appointed, with air conditioning, comfortable beds, and modern bathrooms.

If you want to treat yourself to a unique hotel near Hoi An’s old town, Tropical Home Villa is a fantastic choice. This small-scale hotel has a fantastic design. The swimming pool is stunning, and the comfort level is top-notch!

The post The 10 Best Things to Do in Sapa, Vietnam appeared first on TRAVELREBELS.

]]>

Sapa is one of the most beautiful destinations in Vietnam. It is located in the northern highlands, surrounded by mountains covered in vast rice terraces. Put on your hiking boots because in the vicinity of Sapa, you can embark on fantastic hikes through the breathtaking nature. You’ll walk along winding trails through lush valleys, occasionally passing by spectacular viewpoints. You’ll also encounter authentic villages where you can connect with locals from various ethnic minority groups who have been living here for generations. Below, you’ll find information about the top 10 things to do in Sapa. We’ll also discuss the best time to visit, how to get to Sapa, provide tips for great restaurants, and suggest charming places to stay.

How to Travel to Sapa?

Most people travel to Sapa from Hanoi or Ha Giang. Below, you can read about the various options for getting to Sapa.

From Hanoi to Sapa

By Bus: The most budget-friendly way to travel from Hanoi to Sapa is by bus. The bus journey takes approximately 6 hours and goes directly to Sapa. There are many different bus companies to choose from. You can opt for a ‘regular’ bus or a luxury bus. Of course, there is a price difference, but it’s still relatively cheap. Compare all buses and reserve your seat.

By Night Train: Another comfortable option for traveling from Hanoi to Sapa is the night train. The train runs at night, saving you the cost of a hotel stay. You’ll spend the night in a sleeper car, and you can choose from different classes. The higher the class, the more luxurious it is. It’s worth noting that the train goes to Lao Cai station, which is 35 km from Sapa. So, upon arrival at the train station, you’ll still need to take a bus or taxi to Sapa. You can also pre-book the bus or taxi.

Van Ha Giang naar Sapa

By Bus: The only way to travel from Ha Giang to Sapa is by bus. Both tour buses and minivans are available, and the journey takes about 6 hours. Check out all the different buses and departure times.

What to Do in Sapa?

There’s plenty to see and do in and around Sapa. Here are my tips!

Drive from Sapa to Tram Ton Pass

The Tram Ton Pass stretches across the Hoang Lien Son mountain range and is also known as the Heaven’s Gate Pass. This 1900-meter-high (6234-feet-high) mountain pass is just a 20-minute drive from Sapa, and the best way to explore it is by scooter. Ride along the winding roads while enjoying the most spectacular views along the way. You’re likely to want to stop after every bend because the scenery is so beautiful! Read on below the photos for the most scenic spots to stop along the way.

The Tram Ton Pass may not be long in terms of miles, but there are quite a few attractions along the way. The Silver Waterfall is right next to the road, making this 200-meter-high (656-feet-high) waterfall impossible to miss. Walk around the waterfall on the wooden path and watch the water cascade down the mountains. A little further away from the main road, you’ll find another beautiful waterfall called Love Waterfall. To reach this waterfall, you’ll need to hike for 30 minutes. It’s quieter than The Silver Waterfall and perhaps even more enjoyable to visit. Five kilometers (3.1 miles) down the road, you’ll come across this massive glass bridge. It’s fun to walk across, but may not be suitable for those with a fear of heights. You can have a cup of coffee or tea here while enjoying the view. If you’re up for driving further into the mountains, visiting the Chu Va Viewpoint is fantastic. It’s about 13 kilometers (8 miles) from the Tram Ton Pass, and the view is absolutely stunning.

Stay in a Hotel with Rice Terraces View

If there’s one place in Vietnam where you can have a special overnight stay, it’s in Sapa. In the center of Sapa, you’ll find many hotels, but it’s much more enjoyable to stay just outside the center. Here, you’ll wake up to incredible views of the mountains and lush rice terraces. Regardless of whether you have a small or large budget, there’s something beautiful to be found in every budget range. Treating yourself or your travel companion to an unforgettable stay is fantastic. The hotels below are all highly recommended and share one thing in common: a breathtaking view.

The most beautiful hotels with a view in Sapa

$ – D&D Eco Sapa
$ – Hmong House Sapa
$ – Sapa’s Soul
$$ – Sapa Eco Bungalows & Spa
$$$ – Laxsik Ecolodge
$$$ – Eco Palms House – Sapa Retreat

Visit the Cultural Cat Cat Village

Vietnam is home to a large number of ethnic groups, with 53 ethnic minority groups in total. These minority groups primarily reside in the mountains of Northern Vietnam. Located 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) from Sapa, at the foot of the Muong Hoa Valley, is the traditional village of Cat Cat village. Here, the Hmong people mainly live, and during a visit, you’ll get a glimpse into their traditional way of life. It’s worth noting that Cat Cat Village is focused on tourism, so you’ll pay a small entrance fee to wander through it. The money collected goes to locals who open their homes to visitors. In the houses, they’re eager to show you their handiwork and embroidery.

Running through Cat Cat Village is Tien Sa Waterfall. You’ll need to climb up and down quite a few steps to reach it, but once you arrive, you can fully enjoy the beautiful waterfall. To get there, follow the signs to the waterfall and turn left at this point. Here, you can peacefully admire the waterfall from above. Continue walking towards the edge of the waterfall and witness the water cascading down up close.

Take a Trek through the Muong Hoa Valley

Taking a trek through the Muong Hoa Valley is undoubtedly one of the most enjoyable things to do in Sapa. With a guide, you’ll explore the most beautiful spots in the valley, visit villages, and meet locals. The minority groups living here are the Hmong, Dao, and Táy, each of them distinguished by differences in language, clothing, and customs. Your guide will share a lot of information about this during the trek. For example, my guide told me that there’s an indigo plant growing in the valley, which locals use to dye their clothing. That’s why you’ll see many people with blue paint on their hands. I went on the hike with this lovely guide, and I can highly recommend it to everyone. During the hike, you’ll see beautiful rice terraces, cross rivers, and learn a lot about Sapa.

Take the Cable Car to Mount Fansipan

For those who want to admire the vast valleys of Sapa from above, a ride on the world’s longest non-stop cable car is a must. The cable car to heaven takes you to the summit of Mount Fansipan at over 3,000 meters (9843 feet) above sea level. You’ll travel through the clouds in the cable car, occasionally catching glimpses of the lush scenery below. From the top, you’ll have an incredible view, and you’ll spot numerous waterfalls in the distance. Once you reach the summit, the view is fantastic. Stroll through the beautiful temple complex and be sure to climb the 600 stairs because this is where you truly reach the top of Mount Fansipan. Let the mysterious clouds pass by, and with a bit of luck, you might even see China in the distance. If you don’t feel like climbing the stairs, you can also take a train to the top of the mountain.

Tip: Do you enjoy a physical challenge? Climbing Mount Fansipan is a great option. The route to the top is about 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) with steep inclines and descents along the way. If you book this trek to the top of Mount Fansipan, you’ll spend the night at an altitude of 2,800 meters (9186 feet).

Vintage Shopping in Sapa

Attention, vintage lovers! In the center of Sapa, you’ll find Si Salt 2hand, where you can browse through unique vintage treasures. The collection includes colorful clothing with various cheerful prints, as well as denim and accessories. After your shopping spree, if you feel like grabbing a bite to eat or drink, right next to the store is the cozy Thong Dong Vegan 1 café, serving delicious food.

Explore Ta Phin Village

Located about a 30-minute drive from Sapa, Ta Phin Village is surrounded by rice terraces and herb plantations. As soon as you enter the village, locals will guide you and show you how they live here. Don’t be surprised if you suddenly find yourself inside someone’s house, as the locals are happy to give you a peek behind their doors.

There aren’t too many activities to do in Ta Phin Village. You mainly go there for the experience of authentic life. However, there are a few things you shouldn’t miss. It’s nice to enjoy a cup of coffee at Ta Phin Cottage while taking in the view of the valley. What’s truly unique is to take an herbal bath with a view! You can do this at Dao’s Spa, and it’s a delightful activity for relaxation. The herbs they use for the bathwater come from the valley and help relieve stress and reduce ailments like headaches and muscle pain. It’s also very affordable.

Tip: On the way from Sapa to Ta Phin Village, make a stop at the remains of this French church. This is a beautiful ruin surrounded by greenery.

Wander Through the Markets in the Sapa Region

If you want to get a glimpse into the authentic life of the Vietnamese people, visit one of the markets in the Sapa region. Here, you’ll step back in time and witness traders coming together to sell their livestock, vegetables, and fruits among dozens of trucks. Unfortunately, the markets are quite far from Sapa, so you’ll have to travel a long distance to reach them. However, the journey itself is beautiful as you pass through many stunning mountains and valleys. Due to the distance, it’s worth considering whether it’s worth the effort. The markets are not open daily, so check their opening hours.

Coc Ly Market – This is an important local market for ethnic minorities in the region. There are hardly any tourists, and the market is incredibly authentic. It is only open on Tuesdays from 06:00 to 14:00 and is located about 2.5 hours from Sapa. The journey there is very scenic, and you can get there by taking a tour, taxi, or riding a scooter on your own. If you prefer to visit the market with a tour, you can book one at Thong Dong Vegan Sapa.

Bac Ha Market – This traditional market also provides insights into authentic life. The market is held every Sunday from 06:00 to 14:00 and is about a 2.5-hour drive from Sapa. If you visit the market with this guide, he will tell you everything about the culture, customs, and history.

What NOT to Do in Sapa?

In the surroundings of Sapa, and actually everywhere in Southeast Asia, you’ll come across children selling bracelets and other items. Often, they are incredibly cute, and saying ‘no’ can be difficult. However, we strongly advise against buying anything from children during your trip. By buying from children, you encourage them to work when they should be going to school or playing. If you want to support the local population, purchase a beautifully handcrafted souvenir from an adult in one of the villages. Bargaining is customary in these transactions.

The Best Time to Visit Sapa

Sapa experiences different seasons. In principle, you can visit Sapa year-round, but not every season is recommended. The winter months, from December to February, are the worst time to visit Sapa. It rains little during this period, but it is cold with temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius and frequent fog. The rice terraces are brown, making the surroundings less beautiful. March to May offers better weather in Sapa. The average temperature is around 15 degrees Celsius. June to August are the warmest months and also the busiest. It may rain more in these months, but this keeps the rice fields beautifully green. Late August to early October is the harvest season. The rice fields are at their most beautiful during these months, and the temperatures are pleasant. However, be sure to bring your rain poncho, as rain showers are not uncommon even during this period.

Best Restaurants in Sapa

Thong Dong Vegan – This delightful vegan restaurant has two locations in Sapa and is my favorite restaurant. They serve healthy breakfasts, delicious soups, and rice bowls. You can even make your own fresh spring rolls.
The Mist Sapa – Here, you can enjoy the best coffee and order a Banh Mi sandwich or a sweet coffee bun. Relax in the cozy garden and enjoy the tranquility.
Sapa Sky View restaurant & bar – From this cozy restaurant, you can savor meals while enjoying the view. They serve salads, pasta, and delicious sashimi.
Viettrekking Coffee & Restaurant – Once again, a place where you can relish a fantastic view of Sapa’s green valleys. They serve Vietnamese and international dishes.
Good Morning Vietnam Restaurant – A cozy restaurant with a very friendly owner. You can enjoy a tasty breakfast, lunch, and dinner here. The menu is extensive, offering both meat and vegetarian dishes.
Yummi Restaurant –
As the name suggests, the food here is very delicious! Visit during daylight to enjoy the view as well.
Little Vietnam Restaurant –
If you’re in the mood for delicious Vietnamese cuisine, this is the place to be.

Our Favorite Places to Stay in Sapa

At Hmong House Sapa, you can book a room with a fantastic view without a hefty price tag. In the morning, you can watch the sunrise from your bed, which is truly unique! The homestay is run by a very kind family that makes you feel right at home. If you’d like to stay in a hotel with a pool, then Sapa Eco Bungalows & Spa is perfect! From this eco-hotel, you have a sweeping view of the rice terraces and the mountains. You’ll stay in a comfortable double room with a balcony and a cozy bed. The staff is super friendly and goes out of their way to make your stay enjoyable. If you want to pamper yourself and stay in a luxury lodge, Laxsik Ecolodge might be the most beautiful hotel in Sapa. From the pool, you can gaze over the rice terraces for miles, and you’ll stay in a fantastic bungalow with the same breathtaking view. You can also enjoy delicious meals at the restaurant.

Good to know: The hotels mentioned above are all located a bit farther from the city center. This allows you to enjoy the beautiful views and tranquility. If you hop on a scooter or take a taxi, you’ll be in the bustling city center in no time.

The beautiful countryside around Hoi An is perfect to explore by bicycle! With this fun bike tour, you’ll venture off the beaten path and discover local life while enjoying picturesque views of the rice fields. You’ll pedal across charming bridges, spot water buffaloes grazing in the meadows, and visit several local craft businesses. This bike tour is a delightful way to get to know the real Vietnam and escape the city’s hustle and bustle. Therefore, it’s definitely one of the most enjoyable things to do in Hoi An!

The Countryside of Hoi An

The countryside surrounding Hoi An is stunning. You’ll find vast rice paddies, swaying palm trees, and locals working in the fields. Almost all the locals here wear traditional Vietnamese conical hats, and the children wave enthusiastically as you cycle past. In the Hoi An countryside, you’ll come across many small villages with traditional houses made of bamboo, wood, and clay. You’ll also find numerous small family businesses, such as coffee roasting, rattan mat weaving, or rice wine production.

What Will You See and Do During the Bike Tour?

The bike tour takes you through the countryside of Hoi An. The tour starts with a boat ride of about half an hour, and then you hop on your bike. In total, you’ll cover a scenic route of approximately nine kilometers. You’ll be cycling with a small group of up to 10 people, accompanied by an enthusiastic guide. The guide speaks good English and will share insights about Vietnamese rural life. Along the way, you’ll make several stops for tasty snacks and visit some family businesses. You’ll have the chance to observe a family weaving colorful traditional mats and stop by a family business where typical Vietnamese fishing baskets are woven. You’ll even get to try balancing in these fishing baskets on the water, and believe me, it’s not easy to stay steady!

At the next stop, you’ll witness the process of making rice wine, also known as sake. This alcoholic beverage is made from special sake rice and contains 5% to 19% alcohol. During the visit, you’ll see how they polish the outer layer of rice grains to release starch. Starch is essential for converting sugars into alcohol during fermentation. The more the rice is polished, the smoother the taste of the drink. At the end of the stop, everyone can try a shot or two.

The last stop is at a family selling various handcrafted wooden accessories. Every detail here is made by hand. So, the bike tour is not just about cycling; it also includes enjoyable and informative stops along the way.

Combine the Bike Tour with a Cooking Class

If you don’t have much time in Hoi An and you’d like to learn Vietnamese cooking, you can combine this bike tour with an authentic cooking class. During this cooking class, you’ll learn to cook traditional Vietnamese dishes under the guidance of Thom, who was born and raised in Hoi An. Thom will share insights about Vietnamese cuisine and why food is so important in Vietnamese culture. In total, you’ll prepare four different dishes, including the delicious Banh Xeo, a stuffed rice pancake. At the end of the cooking class, you’ll receive a small cookbook with the Vietnamese dishes you prepared that day. After the cooking class, you’ll hop on your bike and explore the Hoi An countryside. The cooking class is organized by the same company as the bike tour, so if you’re interested, you can book the combination tour where you’ll do both activities in one day. Highly recommended!

Useful Information and Practical Tips for the Bike Tour

 • Don’t forget to wear a hat or cap to protect against the sun
 • Apply sunscreen generously
 • In the winter months, it’s a good idea to bring something warm
 • Bring a raincoat

Halong Bay is one of the most famous destinations in Vietnam, thanks to its stunning landscape. The rock formations in Halong Bay are nearly 500 million years old and consist of thousands of islands. They were once part of a massive coral reef even longer ago. Now, these are mostly tiny islands, some rising hundreds of feet from the sea. Hop on a cruise and sail through these gigantic rock formations, enjoying spectacular views and the beauty of Halong Bay. Here, you can find out what to do and get practical tips for visiting Halong Bay.

Halong Bay is one of the most popular destinations in Vietnam, which means it can get quite crowded. In this article, you’ll learn how to visit Halong Bay while avoiding the crowds. You’ll also find tips for Cat Ba, a beautiful island and the main base for visiting Halong Bay. This way, you can make the most of your visit to Halong Bay and Cat Ba!

Cat Ba is the Base for Halong Bay

It’s essential to know that Halong Bay got its name because it’s located near the city of Halong. However, this is not a pleasant city to visit as a traveler, which is why almost everyone uses Cat Ba Island as the base for exploring Halong Bay. Cat Ba is the largest island in the bay. In the southern town, often called Cat Ba Town, you’ll find many good restaurants and lovely hostels and hotels. When you leave Cat Ba Town, you’ll be in Cat Ba National Park in no time. Here, you can hike to viewpoints and caves, as you’ll read later in this article.

How to Travel to Cat Ba, Halong Bay?

Most people travel to Cat Ba, Halong Bay from either Hanoi or Ninh Binh. Below, you’ll find information on how to travel to Cat Ba from these destinations. If you’re traveling from another location to Cat Ba, Halong Bay, check out various routes.

From Hanoi to Cat Ba, Halong Bay

By Bus: This journey takes about 3.5 hours. Check current departure times and book your seat in advance. Make sure to specify Cat Ba as your final destination.

From Ninh Binh to Cat Ba, Halong Bay

By Bus: There are many buses that can take you from Ninh Binh to Halong Bay in about 4 hours. Check current departure times and book your seat in advance. Make sure to specify Cat Ba as your final destination.

What to Do in Halong Bay and Cat Ba?

Below, you’ll find all the tips for visiting Halong Bay and the beautiful island of Cat Ba.

A Cruise through Halong Bay (Without the Crowds)

A cruise is the best way to explore the stunning landscape of Halong Bay. There are numerous tour companies offering cruises through Halong Bay, and often these boats visit the same places. This can lead to overcrowding in certain areas, which can diminish the charm. Therefore, I went on this cruise. This boat starts in Cat Ba and sails to places where most other boats don’t go. Your experience is so much better when you only have to share beautiful places with a few others! The boat has many comfortable seating areas, allowing you to relax and enjoy the scenery along the way. Additionally, the staff is super friendly, and the guide speaks good English.

During the cruise through Halong Bay, you’ll make several enjoyable stops, including a fishing village and some beautiful beaches. What’s unique about this cruise is that you’ll also go kayaking. You’ll paddle to beautiful caves and lagoons. Kayaking allows you to experience the Halong Bay landscape in a completely different way.

Tip: I chose the day cruise due to limited time, but it turns out that the two-day cruise by the same organization is the most beautiful option. You’ll stay overnight on the boat, and the advantage of this cruise is that it takes you to even quieter places, away from the crowds. This way, you’ll see even more of the beautiful Halong Bay. During the two-day cruise, you’ll visit many stunning caves and beaches, and all meals are included.

Rent a Scooter and Explore Cat Ba

Cat Ba is a very green island, and the most beautiful places are perfect for exploring by scooter. The roads are well-maintained, and traffic is calm, so even if you don’t have much experience riding a scooter, it’s doable. Most accommodations offer scooter rentals, but it’s often cheaper to rent directly from a rental company. You can find the Dũng Yến Motorbike shop in Cat Ba Town, which is a reliable rental company. In the following paragraphs, you’ll read about the most beautiful places to visit with your scooter. If you don’t want to or can’t ride a scooter, you can reach all these places by taxi as well.

Tip: When renting a scooter, it’s a good idea to make a clear video of the scooter before taking off to document any existing damage. This can help avoid disputes when returning the scooter.

Hike through Cat Ba National Park

More than half of Cat Ba Island is covered by the pristine Cat Ba National Park. This biosphere reserve is home to about 1,500 different plant species and many animals, including civet cats, macaques, and deer. In the national park, you can go on several beautiful hikes of varying lengths. All the trails lead to the stunning Ding Ngu Lam Viewpoint. From this viewpoint, you’ll have a fantastic view of the jungle and the numerous peaks of Cat Ba. At the entrance of Cat Ba National Park, you’ll receive information about the different routes and starting points. Along the way, you’ll find signs with route directions. Be sure to download the map on Maps.me so you can navigate offline. Maps.me includes all hiking trails.

You can easily reach the entrance of Cat Ba National Park with your scooter, just a little over a 25-minute drive from Cat Ba Town. The route itself is beautiful! You can also take a taxi if you prefer not to ride a scooter. At the entrance of the national park, you can purchase an entrance ticket and choose to explore the park on your own or hire a guide. A guide can provide more information about the flora and fauna of Cat Ba National Park. If you want an English-speaking guide, be sure to request one explicitly.

Visit the Hospital Cave

There are many caves on Cat Ba Island, but none are as remarkable as the Hospital Cave. During the war, this cave served as a secret hospital and shelter. The Hospital Cave was built in 1963 by Vietnamese soldiers and was used until 1975. The cave had various rooms, including operating rooms, treatment rooms, a pharmacy, and even a dental practice. Today, there is a small but interesting exhibition inside. At the entrance, you’ll find guides who offer to give you a tour of the Hospital Cave. If you’re interested in this, be sure to agree on a price.

Tip: Three kilometers (1.9 miles) away, you’ll find Trung Trang Cave. This is also a beautiful cave with a vast network of tunnels and huge stalactites. You can walk through it in about half an hour.

Best Restaurants in Cat Ba (Halong Bay)

Even though Cat Ba is a small town, there are certainly some excellent restaurants to be found. I’ve searched for the best restaurants, and these are my favorites:

Like Coffee – This is a popular spot on the main street in Cat Ba Town. It’s a small, colorful restaurant with a cozy outdoor terrace, and the menu is extensive. Breakfast and lunch are especially delicious, with items like smoothie bowls, pancakes, sandwiches, and excellent coffee.
My Way Pizza – If you’re in the mood for some comfort food, My Way Pizza serves tasty pizzas and burgers.
The Little Leaf – This small establishment is certainly one of the most popular restaurants in Cat Ba Town. They serve both Asian and Western dishes, and they have a vegetarian menu as well.
Casa Bonita – At Casa Bonita, not only is the food excellent, but the ambiance is also very cozy. The terrace is like a greenhouse with lots of plants.
Quiri Pub Cocktail & Restaurant – This is the place to go for a fun evening. The food is very tasty, the cocktails even better, and the staff creates a great atmosphere.
Yummy Restaurant – The name of this restaurant says it all; the Vietnamese food here is yummy!

Our Favorite Places to Stay in Cat Ba (Halong Bay)

Sadhu Garden Inn is a lovely place in Cat Ba Town. It’s located on the outskirts of the village, offering a beautiful and central location in relation to restaurants in Cat Ba. There’s a nice swimming pool with sunbeds, a great atmosphere, a delicious breakfast in the morning, and the staff is incredibly friendly. You can choose from beautiful bungalows or dormitories if you’re traveling on a tight budget. If you prefer staying in a small hotel, Quiri Hotel is a top choice. The rooms are beautifully decorated, and most of them offer fantastic views of the water. Plus, you can always find a cozy atmosphere at the hotel’s restaurant! For a unique stay, check out JoyStay where you can stay in an idyllic thatched-roof bungalow with large windows. The bungalows are air-conditioned and surrounded by a beautiful garden. It’s a bit further from the town, perfect if you’re looking for some peace and quiet. The accommodation rents scooters for a few euros a day, so you can easily get to Cat Ba Town in no time.

Ninh Binh is a beautiful rural province that should definitely be on your itinerary when traveling through Vietnam. In Ninh Binh, you’ll see gigantic limestone rock formations that can reach up to 200 meters (656 feet) in height. Amidst these rocks, you’ll find lush rice fields, rivers, lakes, and caves. That’s why Ninh Binh is often referred to as the “Halong Bay of the interior.” It’s a place where you can truly unwind and experience the authentic countryside life of Vietnam. Hop on a bicycle or scooter and explore the narrow roads that wind through the rice fields. The nature in Ninh Binh is spectacular, and life here is wonderfully simple. We’ve listed a couple of tips below: Welcome to the real Vietnam!

Tam Coc is the Gateway to Ninh Binh Province

It’s important to note that Ninh Binh is both a large city and a province. In this article, I’m referring to Ninh Binh Province. The city of Ninh Binh itself may not necessarily be a charming place to visit. Within Ninh Binh Province, you’ll find the small rural village of Tam Coc, which is the ideal base for exploring the countryside of Ninh Binh. In Tam Coc, you’ll discover many good restaurants, lovely accommodations, and interesting attractions. Towards the end of this article, you’ll find information about the most beautiful hotels in Tam Coc.

How to Travel to Tam Coc, Ninh Binh

Tam Coc is located in Ninh Binh Province in northern Vietnam. Most people travel to Tam Coc, Ninh Binh from destinations like Hanoi, Halong Bay, Phong Nha, or Hoi An. Compare all the bus companies and book your bus ticket.

What to Do in Ninh Binh?

Ninh Binh may not have a plethora of attractions, but there are certainly some things you shouldn’t miss. Below, you’ll find all my tips for Tam Coc and Ninh Binh.

Explore the Ninh Binh countryside by bike or scooter

The Ninh Binh countryside is delightful to explore by bike or scooter. Most hostels and hotels offer bikes that you can use for free or at a small cost. If you prefer to rent a scooter, you can often arrange this through your accommodation. Tour through the green rice fields, visit some caves, and admire beautiful temples. Later in this article, you’ll read about these attractions.

Please note: In Ninh Binh, there are few to no taxis available. Cycling or scootering is the only way to explore the Ninh Binh countryside.

Take a boat trip on the Tam Coc River or Trang An

One of the most enjoyable things to do in Ninh Binh is taking a boat trip on the Tam Coc River or at Trang An. Step into a traditional rowboat and peacefully enjoy the spectacular surroundings. The rowboats are operated by locals of all ages who not only row with their hands but also with their feet. You can take a boat trip on either the Tam Coc River or through the Trang An landscape. Both locations are beautiful. I’ll outline the differences between these places so you can decide which one to visit. If you can’t decide, you can always visit both places. Take the boat trip early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the crowds.

Tam Coc Boat Trip

 • This boat trip starts in the center of Tam Coc.
 • You’ll sail past beautiful rice fields and towering rocks. The photos below were taken at Tam Coc. It’s especially stunning when you visit just before the rice harvest when the fields are lush green.
 • During the boat trip, you’ll visit a viewpoint, and then you’ll return along the same route.
 • The boat trip takes about 1.5 hours in total.

Trang An Boat Trip

 • From Tam Coc, it’s a 15-minute drive to the starting point of the boat trip.
 • During this boat trip, you’ll visit caves and temples.
 • This is where you’ll find the most impressive karst mountains in Ninh Binh.
 • You can choose from different boat trip routes of 2 hours, 3 hours, and 4 hours.
 • During this boat trip, you won’t see rice fields, so it’s a good choice when the fields are brown.

Bich Dong Pagoda: Visit One of Ninh Binh’s Most Beautiful Temples

Located just outside Tam Coc, you’ll find one of the most beautiful temples in Ninh Binh. The Bich Dong Pagoda is approximately six hundred years old and consists of three pagodas on different levels. The most famous and photogenic spot is the bridge that leads you to the entrance of the first pagoda: Ha Pagoda. Trung Pagoda is the middle pagoda and is situated in a cave. One level higher, you’ll find the third pagoda: Thuong Pagoda. From Thuong Pagoda, you can enjoy a stunning view of the Ninh Binh landscape. You only pay an entrance fee for parking your bike or scooter because a visit to the Bich Dong Pagoda is free.

Climb the Steps to the Hang Mua Viewpoint

It’s time to admire Ninh Binh from above. Now, you’ll truly see the grandeur of this region! To reach the Hang Mua Viewpoint, you’ll have to climb a substantial number of steps. Put on your good shoes and prepare to sweat, as you’ll need to climb 500 steps in total. Once you reach the top, you’ll be rewarded with a spectacular panoramic view of the surrounding mountains, rice fields, and the beautiful river flowing through Ninh Binh. It’s important to note that there are two viewpoints. From the left viewpoint, you’ll overlook the Tam Coc Valley, and from the right viewpoint, you’ll have a magnificent view of the green rice fields. At the top of the viewpoint, you’ll find an enormous dragon winding its way along the rocks. This is an important symbol in Vietnamese culture and, according to locals, symbolizes a good harvest. The best time to climb the Hang Mua Viewpoint is during sunset.

Tip: Drive all the way to the entrance of the Hang Mua Viewpoint and don’t let locals stop you on the way, telling you where to park your scooter. The only place where you pay for your visit to the Hang Mua Viewpoint is at the entrance itself, and this is where you should also park your scooter.

Visit Vietnam’s Largest Temple Complex

About a 30-minute drive from Ninh Binh, you’ll find Vietnam’s largest temple complex, Bai Dinh Pagoda. Here, you’ll discover dozens of Buddhist temples divided into an old and a new section. The temples in the old section are mostly located in small mysterious caves on the hill. The new section is characterized by a massive tower that you can reach by elevator. At the very top, you’ll have a beautiful view of the entire temple complex.

Tip: You can choose to walk from temple to temple, but this takes quite a bit of time due to its vastness. Yellow golf carts drive around and can take you from temple to temple for a small fee. This is ideal, especially when it’s hot. You can hop on and off whenever you want.

Best Restaurants in Tam Coc

Chookie’s Beer Garden – If you’re not in the mood for Asian cuisine, head to this stylish restaurant. Their menu includes items like fish & chips, burgers, falafel, and bangers & mash.
Ngon Vegan Restaurant –
This restaurant is a must-visit in Tam Coc. It proves that Vietnamese cuisine can be delicious when using only plant-based ingredients.
Tam Coc Lantern Restaurant –
Here, you can enjoy delicious Vietnamese food, and the restaurant caters to both meat and fish lovers as well as vegetarians. The staff is incredibly friendly.
Family Restaurant –
This is a typical Vietnamese restaurant run by a lovely family who will warmly welcome you.
T-Pub Restaurant –
A nice restaurant with a relaxed atmosphere. You can come here for pizzas, burgers, a healthy smoothie, or a cold beer.

Our Favorite Places to Stay in Tam Coc

Ninh Binh offers some fantastic accommodations where you can enjoy a delightful stay for a reasonable price. As mentioned earlier in this article, Tam Coc is a great base for exploring Ninh Binh, so the following exceptional hostels and hotels are all located in Tam Coc.

At Tam Coc Horizon Bungalow, you can enjoy a stay in an idyllic bungalow in a stunning location. These bungalows are nestled beneath an impressive limestone cliff, and on the other side, you can gaze out over the lush rice fields. The hotel features a pool with breathtaking views where you can unwind. You can also borrow bicycles for free to explore the area, and the owners go the extra mile to ensure you have a pleasant stay. (131 feet from the limestone cliff)

Tam Coc Sunshine Homestay is also situated amidst the rice fields but offers a more budget-friendly option. Here, you can stay in charming double rooms with air conditioning, and there’s a pleasant pool where you can relax. If you prefer staying in a cozy hostel where you can meet other travelers, then The Banana Tree Hostel is an excellent choice in Tam Coc. The Mekong Delta in Vietnam is a unique water landscape consisting of hundreds of small rivers. The vast delta is surrounded by beautiful green rice fields. These rice fields are a major source of income for the many families living on and along the water. It’s no wonder that the Mekong Delta is also known as the rice bowl of Vietnam. You’ll find floating markets where various foods are traded, such as coconuts, fish, meat, and fruit. It’s a unique destination you shouldn’t miss if you want to experience the countryside of Vietnam. Below, I share some great tips for visiting the Mekong Delta!

What is the Mekong Delta in Vietnam?

The Mekong is one of the longest rivers in the world. The river originates in Tibet and flows through China, Cambodia, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam. The vast river eventually branches into 9 small rivers that flow into the southern part of Vietnam. This extensive water landscape is called the Mekong Delta.

The Mekong Delta is a fertile area for rice and other crops production, but it hasn’t always been this way. After twenty years of war, a severe famine struck Vietnam, and the soil in the Mekong Delta was too acidic to grow rice. Dutch researchers shared their knowledge at that time to restore the ecosystem’s balance. Nowadays, more than half of Vietnam’s rice yield and fish come from this region.

How to Visit the Mekong Delta?

You can visit the Mekong Delta in various ways. If you have the time, I recommend staying for a few days to truly experience the Mekong Delta. The town of Can Tho makes for a beautiful base. If you have less time, you can also opt for a day trip from Ho Chi Minh City.

Visiting the Mekong Delta from Can Tho

About a four-hour drive from Ho Chi Minh City, you’ll find the town of Can Tho. In the green surroundings of Can Tho, there are some lovely lodges that make for a perfect base. If you want to experience the Mekong Delta fully, it’s recommended to stay for a few nights at one of these lodges around Can Tho. From here, you can visit the Cai Rang Floating Market, the largest floating market in the Mekong Delta, and engage in many more exciting activities. Below, I’ll share which lodge is the most beautiful and highly recommended for a unique overnight stay.

Tour to the Mekong Delta from Ho Chi Minh City

If you have limited time, you can also take a day trip to the Mekong Delta from Ho Chi Minh City. It’s about a two-hour drive from Ho Chi Minh City to the Mekong Delta. When you arrive there, you’ll board a boat and sail through the beautiful water landscape. Along the way, you’ll make several stops at small local villages and visit a coconut farm. This way, you can get a good glimpse of life in this region of Vietnam in a relatively short amount of time. It’s ideal if you have less time to spare during your trip. If you decide to go for a day trip, I recommend this Mekong Delta tour.

What to Do in the Mekong Delta?

The following activities are a must when visiting the Mekong Delta.

Cycling through the Mekong Delta

Cycle along the narrow rivers with swaying palm trees on the banks, cross numerous bike bridges, and stop at a local market for a tasty snack. The locals are incredibly friendly everywhere, constantly waving at you. Cycling through the Mekong Delta is a unique experience you won’t forget quickly because on a bike, you can taste the authentic Vietnamese life. You can cycle independently, but I recommend booking a bike tour with a guide. The advantage of a bike tour is that you’ll visit the most beautiful places, and the guide can tell you everything about the Mekong Delta. You can arrange a bike tour at your hotel and cannot book it online.

Visit the Cai Rang Floating Market

In the morning, pay a visit to the Cai Rang Floating Market, the oldest and largest floating market in Vietnam. Marvel at the life on and along the water, where market vendors sell their goods from boats. You’ll see boats selling watermelons, pineapples, coconuts, and even fresh soups. To see what’s being sold, each boat has a stick with the respective product hanging from it. Along the way, grab the famous snack banh mi or a delicious noodle soup. You can’t visit the floating market independently because you’ll need a guided boat. You can take the tour to the Cai Rang Floating Market from both Ho Chi Minh City and Can Tho. When booking the tour, you can choose between a pickup in one of these cities, and in the case of Can Tho, they will pick you up at your hotel.

Explore the Mekong Delta at Sunrise

Witness life around the Mekong Delta coming to life with a boat tour at sunrise. In two hours, you’ll cruise along the small rivers of the delta as the locals slowly start their day. By the water, you’ll see people washing in the river or busy preparing breakfast for their families. As you sail by, you’ll be greeted with enthusiastic waves. This is a delightful way to get acquainted with this beautiful water landscape and its friendly inhabitants.

Tip: Unfortunately, the captain of our boat spoke little to no English, making it difficult for us to ask questions. When booking this tour at your hotel, it’s a good idea to specifically request an English-speaking guide.

Visit the Market and Sample Local Vietnamese Products

Markets in Vietnam come in all shapes and sizes. When you stroll through the small market of Can Tho in the morning, you’ll almost certainly be the only traveler. There will be lots of giggling as they are not accustomed to tourists, but the locals are incredibly friendly and enjoy chatting with you. You’ll hear the question “Where are you from?” multiple times here. Sit down on a plastic stool and have a chat while enjoying a local snack and a refreshing drink.

Must do: Stay at Green Village Mekong in Can Tho

If you decide to visit the Mekong Delta, it’s a great idea to stay at Green Village Mekong. This small-scale hotel is run by an incredibly sweet couple. You’ll stay right in the heart of the Mekong Delta, just outside Can Tho. Every day, you’ll wake up in an oasis of peace, surrounded by nature. You’ll sleep in an authentic bamboo bungalow located by the water. Each bungalow has its own veranda where you can relax in your hammock. Here, you can truly unwind! If you’re looking for more action, you can borrow bikes for free or book one of the many tours they organize. This is the ideal base to explore the Vietnamese countryside.

Tip: They have only seven bungalows at Green Village Mekong, so if you want to stay here, it’s necessary to book in advance. Breakfast and dinner are included in the price. If your dates are not available, then Vamxang Rustic Home is a great alternative. Here, you’ll also stay in an authentic bungalow and enjoy a lovely swimming pool.

What to Do in Hanoi?

Hanoi offers a wide range of attractions and has something to offer every type of traveler. Here are some things you shouldn’t miss in Hanoi.

Stroll Through the Streets of Hanoi Old Quarter

Hanoi Old Quarter is the historic center of Hanoi and is an attraction in itself. This part of the city is over 1,000 years old and features numerous winding narrow streets filled with coffee shops, street food stalls, cafes, and restaurants. It’s the perfect place to wander around, visit a lively market, or enjoy delicious Vietnamese cuisine. One famous and bustling street worth visiting is Ta Hien Street. Especially in the evening, it’s lively with live music coming from small cafes, and people dance into the late hours.

Phung Hung Street is a major street on the border of the Hanoi Old Quarter. On this street, you’ll find 19 beautiful colorful murals. These artworks depict the daily life of Vietnamese people using the Trompe-L’oeils technique, creating a three-dimensional illusion, making the murals look incredibly realistic.

Tip: Hanoi is filled with scooters, and it might seem impossible to cross the road as a pedestrian. Make sure to walk at a predictable pace when crossing, and you’ll see that traffic anticipates you. Accidents happen when you do unexpected things like walking back or running, so avoid doing these. Cross the road at a safe pedestrian crossing if possible and try to walk with the locals.

Taste Traditional Vietnamese Egg Coffee in Hanoi

Vietnam is the second-largest coffee producer in the world after Brazil. In Hanoi, be sure to try the famous Vietnamese Egg Coffee. It uses whipped egg yolk for a creamy layer on top of the coffee. Egg Coffee originated in the 1940s when there was a shortage of dairy products. You can find many charming coffee shops in Hanoi Old Quarter where you can try this unique coffee. Below, I’ve listed my tips for the best coffee shops in Hanoi.

Giang Cafe – This is the most famous cafe in Hanoi to try Vietnamese Egg Coffee. You can order the Egg Coffee hot or cold, and both are delicious.
The Note Coffee – This trendy cafe is a must-visit in Hanoi. The building is covered with handwritten notes from travelers all over the world, both on the outside and inside. It’s fun to peek inside, and it’s even more enjoyable to have a cup of coffee and leave a note!
Hidden Gem Cafe – Hidden Gem Cafe also has a unique interior, as this creative coffee bar is entirely furnished with recycled materials. It’s a visual delight!

Join a Bike Tour of Hanoi

Bicycles are a fun means of transportation to explore the bustling city of Hanoi! The 3.5-hour bike tour by Baja Bikes starts in Hanoi Old Quarter and takes you through beautiful embassy streets to the outskirts of Hanoi. You’ll see different sides of Hanoi, and the enthusiastic guide will share interesting insights about the city. During the bike tour, you’ll make various stops, have the chance to taste local snacks, and admire several landmarks. You’ll visit the historic Long Bien Bridge and Truc Bach Lake, where the world-famous American pilot John McCain was shot down and captured by the Vietnamese in 1967. The guide will take the time to answer your questions and share fascinating facts. For example, did you know that many historic houses are located just outside the city? Some houses are even 300 years old.

Visit Hanoi Train Street

One of the most picturesque places in Hanoi is Hanoi Train Street. Several times a day, a train passes through the narrow streets of Hanoi, creating quite a spectacle. Everyone has to quickly move aside when the train approaches. This is definitely a must-see when you’re in Hanoi! Please note that you can’t just walk onto the tracks and choose a spot to sit. You can sit at one of the terraces, order a drink, and wait for the train to arrive.

Tip: Check with your hotel or hostel for the current train schedules, as they can change.

Stroll Through the Hanoi Weekend Night Market

In Hanoi Old Quarter, there’s a massive weekend market every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evening. Be prepared for crowds, as both locals and travelers flock to this market. It’s fun to walk around the market, soak in the atmosphere, and enjoy some delicious food. Besides food, you can also buy souvenirs, clothing, jewelry, and other accessories. Remember that bargaining is part of the experience at markets in Vietnam. Always negotiate with a smile, as this often gets you the best price. The Hanoi Weekend Night Market officially opens at 6:00 PM, but some stalls may not be open yet, so it’s a good idea to visit between 7:00 PM and 8:00 PM.

Admire St. Joseph’s Cathedral

As you walk through Hanoi, you’ll notice many French colonial influences. St. Joseph’s Cathedral is a perfect example and is located in Hanoi Old Quarter. The cathedral was built by the French during their occupation of Hanoi and was inspired by the Notre Dame in Paris. It serves as a meeting place for many Roman Catholics and is a beautiful church to explore from the inside.

Note: Always ensure your shoulders and knees are covered when visiting St. Joseph’s Cathedral.

Taste the Best Street Food in Hanoi with a Food Tour

Is Hanoi the starting point of your journey through Vietnam? Then, it’s extra fun to join the Streetfood Walking Tour. You’ll go on an adventure with a small group and a guide to taste various flavors of Vietnamese cuisine. You’ll learn all about different Vietnamese dishes, snacks, and drinks. This knowledge will come in handy for the rest of your journey through Vietnam! Are you a vegetarian or do you have allergies? Not a problem, just mention it in the ‘comments’ section during the booking process. Make sure you start the tour with a hearty appetite.

Take a Stroll Along Hoan Kiem Lake

In the midst of the bustling Hanoi, you’ll find the large Hoan Kiem Lake. It’s a place where many locals escape the city’s hustle and bustle for a walk or a picnic. Don’t forget to visit the Ngoc Son Temple, which is located in the middle of Hoan Kiem Lake and can be reached via a beautiful bright red bridge.

Tip: The best time to visit Hoan Kiem Lake is from Friday to Sunday because the area around the lake is closed to scooters and cars during that time.

Try a Banh Mi Sandwich

It’s time to get acquainted with traditional Vietnamese cuisine, and that includes the Banh Mi sandwich! Banh Mi is a delicious Vietnamese baguette filled with savory ingredients like meat, eggs, and vegetables. There are also vegetarian Banh Mi sandwiches available, often filled with cheese, avocado, mushrooms, and/or tofu. Banh Mi 25 is the most famous place to grab a delicious sandwich, and they offer a variety of options. Enjoy!

Visit Hoa Lo Prison Relic

It’s fascinating to visit the old Hoa Lo prison if you want to learn more about the events during the Vietnam War. Today, it’s a museum, but during the war, this prison, located in the center of Hanoi, was used to imprison and torture political prisoners. During a visit to the Hoa Lo Prison Relic, you’ll see that the conditions in this overcrowded and grim prison were truly terrible.

Tip: You can take an audio tour through the museum. Inquire about it at the entrance.

Get a Bird’s Eye View of Hanoi at the Sky Lotte Observation Deck

Located 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) from Hanoi Old Quarter, you’ll find the Sky Lotte Observation Deck. Step into the elevator and within one minute, you’ll be taken to the 65th floor of this massive skyscraper. Here, you can enjoy a fantastic view of Hanoi. It’s especially enjoyable to have a drink here during sunset when the view becomes even more spectacular!

Note: Upon arrival, take the escalator down. You’ll arrive in a shopping mall, and from there, follow the signs to the elevator that will take you to the Sky Lotte Observation Deck.

Find Serenity at the Temple of Literature

The Temple of Literature, also known as Văn Miếu, is located in the midst of bustling Hanoi, yet it feels like an escape from the city. The Temple of Literature is an ancient university built in 1070. The temple, dedicated to science and literature, is now a place where students come to study in peace. Thanks to its beautiful architecture, it’s also one of the most beautiful landmarks in Hanoi. Stroll through the five different courtyards and admire the beautiful prayer spaces.

Tip: After your visit, take a walk to Gò Kim Chàu Lake. It’s located opposite the Temple of Literature and is beautiful with its various walkways over the water.

Best Restaurants in Hanoi

In Hanoi, you can find delicious food at every street corner from street food stalls, but there are also plenty of good restaurants to explore. Here are some of my favorites.

Luk Lak – For delicious authentic Vietnamese cuisine with a modern twist.
Muoi Tieu – Salt n’ Pepper Kitchen – Start your day right at Muoi Tieu because here you can enjoy a nice breakfast or lunch. Think of avocado toast, salads, croissants, and various sandwiches.
Poké Hanoi – Create your own healthy poké bowl. It’s located right by Hoan Kiem Lake, so it’s also a great option for takeaway if you want to picnic by the water.
The Hanoi Social Club – In this trendy and cozy restaurant, you can enjoy breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It has a homely atmosphere and serves delicious dishes rich in vegetables.
Hanoi Food Culture – A charming restaurant with original decor and friendly staff. Here, you’ll experience the best of Vietnamese cuisine!
