If you’re planning a trip through Costa Rica, you’ll undoubtedly want to spot wild animals, explore the jungle, visit rugged beaches, and waterfalls. Costa Rica boasts a multitude of stunning destinations, which can make crafting a logical itinerary a bit challenging. Which national parks are the most beautiful? Which beach destinations are the most enjoyable? We’ve been to Costa Rica three times and have used these experiences to create the ultimate itinerary for Costa Rica. With this itinerary, you’ll see the most beautiful places and experience that quintessential pura vida feeling that Costa Rica is known for. Hanging bridges, volcanoes, jungle, waterfalls, beaches, wildlife, beach clubs, and hot springs – with this itinerary for Costa Rica, you’ll see it all!

Transport for This Itinerary in Costa Rica

Costa Rica is a typical country where most people travel around with a rental car. Having a rental car gives you all the freedom to go wherever you want. While it’s not a must, it’s quite convenient in Costa Rica. If you’re traveling on a budget, local buses are your best friends. These buses are quite cheap, helping you keep your costs low. Keep in mind that local buses often stop at bus stops, usually lack air conditioning, and for most itineraries, you’ll need to transfer one or more times. There are also minivans that cater specifically to travelers, offering direct transportation between destinations, but these often cost more than renting a car. In our opinion, renting a car is the best and most enjoyable option because embarking on a road trip through Costa Rica is fantastic. Interested in renting a car? Take a look at our tips for renting a car in Costa Rica.

How Many Weeks Do You Need for This Itinerary?

This itinerary takes you through the most beautiful destinations in Costa Rica. It’s what we consider to be the perfect combination of national parks, beaches, and charming villages. The entire itinerary requires a little under three weeks, but you can easily shorten or extend it. We’ve written articles with tips about each destination on this itinerary, providing you with a comprehensive understanding of each place. In these articles, you’ll find information on how to get there, things to do, where to eat, and tips for unique accommodations. If you have more time in Costa Rica, we’ll also suggest a few destinations you can add to your trip at the end of this article. While you’ll see these destinations on the map below, they’re not connected to the main itinerary. You can skip or add destinations as you please, giving your own personal touch to this Costa Rica itinerary.

San José

San José is the capital of Costa Rica and likely the starting point of your journey if you’re not coming from Panama or Nicaragua. Unfortunately, San José isn’t a particularly enjoyable city, and our advice is not to linger there for too long. Of course, after your flight, you’ll want to rest a bit, and in that case, Selina San José is the perfect place. They have beautiful luxury double rooms, as well as comfortable dorms and simpler double rooms. The design and atmosphere are truly fantastic! There are cozy spots where you can easily meet other travelers, and sometimes there’s live music in the evenings. Whether you’re traveling on a small budget or prefer a bit more luxury, they have suitable rooms for every type of traveler. Extra tip: if you have an early or late flight and want to stay close to the airport, the comfortable Dos Palmas Studio Apartments is perfect.

Selina San José is highly popular, so book your accommodation as soon as possible after booking your flights. If you’re also flying back to from San José, it’s recommended to stay here for a night before your flight.

La Fortuna & Arenal Volcano

In La Fortuna, your journey starts off on a high note. Here, you’ll find the famous Arenal Volcano, delightful hot springs, and the most beautiful jungle hanging bridges in Costa Rica. La Fortuna is literally located next to the volcano, providing breathtaking views. You can go on beautiful hikes in the national park, visit a 70-meter-high (229-feet-high) waterfall, relax in hot springs surrounded by nature, and much more. Check out our article with tips for La Fortuna to learn more about this fantastic destination.

Tip: If you’re traveling by rental car from San José to La Fortuna, it’s awesome to visit Costa Rica’s tallest waterfall. The Catarata del Toro waterfall stands at an impressive 90 meters (295 feet) and cascades straight into the crater of an old volcano. The detour is only about an hour longer, and the itinerary to the waterfall is stunningly beautiful!

Monteverde

Continuing on your journey, you’ll head to Monteverde via a stunning winding mountain road. Of all the forests in the world, only 1% is cloud forest, and Monteverde is home to one of the most beautiful cloud forests. Due to its elevation of 1300 meters (4265 feet), you’ll find entirely different types of flora and fauna here compared to many other destinations in Costa Rica. You can engage in various outdoor activities, with ziplining being one of the most impressive. You’ll soar at speeds of up to 70 km per hour (43 mph) over the tops of the jungle and through the clouds at heights of over 100 meters (328 feet). Curious about other things to do in Monteverde? Check out our tips for Monteverde.

Tip: The village near Monteverde where all the hotels and restaurants are located is called Santa Elena.

Santa Teresa

After a few days of active exploration, it’s time to visit a wonderful beach destination. Santa Teresa offers a delightful blend of relaxed vibes, stunning beaches, and charming hotspots. It’s tucked away in the southern part of Nicoya. This peninsula is unique as it’s considered a Blue Zone – regions where people tend to live noticeably healthier and longer lives compared to other parts of the world. Santa Teresa is the perfect place to relax for a few days. While it’s becoming more popular, it hasn’t yet been overrun by mass tourism. You won’t find large hotels and traffic lights here, and life moves a bit slower than in the rest of Costa Rica. Check out our tips for Santa Teresa to get a better idea of how beautiful it is.

Manuel Antonio National Park

Manuel Antonio is an incredibly beautiful national park on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. Here, you come not only for hiking but also for relaxation. The park features stunning white sandy beaches lined with palm trees. Additionally, you can spot a lot of wildlife, making it one of the best places in Costa Rica to see sloths! Before you visit, make sure to read our tips for Manuel Antonio because there are a few things you should be aware of.

Manuel Antonio is the smallest national park in Costa Rica and also the most visited, so be prepared for crowds. If you find this bothersome, you might want to visit one of the less crowded parks, such as Tortuguero National Park or Corcovado National Park. You’ll find more information about these destinations later in this article.

Tip: On the road between Santa Teresa and Manuel Antonio, you’ll pass by the town of Jaco. Just before Jaco, you’ll find the ‘Crocodile Bridge‘. You should definitely park your car and take a short walk on the bridge. In the water directly under the bridge, you’ll see dozens of gigantic crocodiles basking in the sun.

Uvita

Continue your journey through Costa Rica to the tranquil coastal village of Uvita. In its surroundings, you’ll find several unique attractions. You can visit an incredibly beautiful waterfall and engage in various activities like horseback riding, surfing, and whale watching. The nearby national park is also unique because a rock and sand formation perfectly resembles a whale’s tail. This is the very spot where hundreds of humpback whales gather every year! The whale’s tail forms during low tide when the sea recedes, but during high tide, it’s almost invisible. Learn more about this charming destination in our tips for Uvita article.

Puerto Viejo

You probably want to end your Costa Rica journey on a relaxing beach destination, and Puerto Viejo is the perfect choice for that. This area offers paradisiacal beaches that you can easily explore by bicycle. Puerto Viejo is a laid-back town on the Caribbean coast, where you can always find a reggae band performing somewhere, and you can indulge in Caribbean cuisine. There are plenty of excellent cafes and restaurants, and even in the evening, you can always find a place to dance. Moreover, there are numerous exciting things to do and see in the area. Check out our article with tips for Puerto Viejo to discover all the activities available.

Tips for Other Wonderful Destinations in Costa Rica

Of course, there are more beautiful destinations in Costa Rica. Depending on how much time you have, you can adjust your itinerary and add or omit destinations. The above itinerary is, in our opinion, a perfect mix of various beautiful places, but the following destinations can also be stunning additions, depending on your preferences.

Tortuguero National Park

Tortuguero is situated on a sandbank and is only accessible by a boat ride through the mangroves. Known as the “Amazon of Costa Rica,” this national park has the second-largest population of turtles in the world. During the nesting season from July to October, you can witness thousands of turtles laying their eggs on the beach simultaneously. Apart from this extraordinary spectacle, Tortuguero has a lot more to offer. Explore the beautiful national park by kayak and admire the many exotic animals that call this place home. Discover all the tips for Tortuguero National Park.

Corcovado National Park and Drake Bay

Corcovado National Park is Costa Rica’s most biodiverse destination and is one of the most biodiverse places on Earth. Because it’s located in the southernmost part of Costa Rica, many people skip this destination. However, with its abundant fauna and remote beaches, it’s a paradise for those seeking an unforgettable nature experience. You can venture deep into the jungle for hikes through the primeval forest and spot animals like tapirs, monkeys, and even occasionally, pumas. The latter, however, is a rare sighting. The town of Drake Bay is the perfect base for a visit to Corcovado National Park, and from here, you can enjoy more incredible wildlife activities like snorkeling at Isla del Caño. Check out all the tips for Drake Bay and also our tips for Corcovado National Park.

Montezuma

Montezuma is a tiny surf village in the southern part of the Nicoya Peninsula. It’s located near Santa Teresa, which is why many travelers visit Montezuma as a day trip. However, it can also be wonderful to stay here for a few days if you’re seeking tranquility. Relax on the beach, take a refreshing dip in the three-tiered waterfall, or hike through the nearby Cabo National Park. Check out all the tips for Montezuma.

It’s not too large, traffic is calm, and the routes are stunningly beautiful. While traveling by public transportation in Costa Rica is feasible, renting a car allows you to explore places that may be less accessible by bus. Plus, you can stop wherever you want along the way. A rental car gives you the freedom to go wherever you please, making your journey even more special. In this article, you’ll read about our experiences and tips for renting and driving a car in Costa Rica.

What Are the Roads Like in Costa Rica?

If you choose to travel through Costa Rica with a rental car, you’re probably curious about the condition of the roads there. In most areas, the roads in Costa Rica are relatively good. Highways are especially pleasant, and even paved roads through the mountains are often well-maintained. The condition of unpaved roads greatly depends on the season. During the rainy season between June and November, these roads can turn into large mud puddles with deep potholes.

While driving in Costa Rica, you should always watch out for animals on the road, such as iguanas and snakes. Nowhere else have we seen so many dead animals along the road. Additionally, be cautious of speed bumps. They might not always be indicated with warning signs and can be difficult to spot.

Is Renting a 4×4 Car Necessary in Costa Rica?

4×4 stands for four-wheel drive. With a 4×4 rental car, you can drive on nearly any terrain and won’t get stuck easily. You’ll have better visibility as you sit higher, your car’s underside will be less affected on bumpy roads, and the car can handle steep roads or potholes better. In a mountainous country like Costa Rica, a 4×4 rental car is indeed helpful and offers you more freedom.

If you plan to visit destinations like Monteverde, Drake Bay, or Santa Teresa during the rainy season (June to November), it’s advisable to rent a 4×4. The roads to these destinations might not always be paved, resulting in muddy and slippery conditions after heavy rain. A 4×4 car simply provides much better traction than a regular rental car, which is especially valuable when driving along cliffs. Even during the dry season, roads can be less accessible without a 4×4 due to heavy rain or significant potholes, but it’s more manageable. The type of rental car you need in Costa Rica depends on the places you intend to visit and the season. However, having a 4×4 car will certainly enhance your travel experience. At the end of this article, we provide more information about the cost of renting a 4×4 car in Costa Rica.

Is Driving in Costa Rica Safe?

Driving in Costa Rica is generally safe. Traffic is not rushed, and people drive quite normally. If you venture into the mountains, you might encounter steep cliffs, but as long as you remain calm, it won’t be a problem. Car break-ins can occur in Costa Rica, so it’s smart to keep your belongings out of sight. For instance, put your backpack in the trunk and cover it with the parcel shelf. When renting a car, always check the trunk space and whether a parcel shelf is present. In some parking lots, attendants expect a small tip when you leave. If you come across oncoming drivers flashing their headlights, they’re trying to warn you. This usually indicates a police speed check ahead or another hazard, such as an accident or a large obstacle on the road.

Traffic Rules in Costa Rica

In Costa Rica, they drive on the right side of the road, and traffic rules are almost identical to those you already know. The speed limit on highways is 80 or 100 km/h (50 or 62 mph), outside built-up areas it’s 60 km/h (37 mph), and within built-up areas it’s 40 km/h (25 mph). Near schools and hospitals, the speed limit is 25 km/h (15 mph). Speed limits are usually clearly marked. When you stop at a gas station, you won’t need to refuel yourself. In Costa Rica, attendants do it for you.

Additional Info and Tips for Renting a Car in Costa Rica

Here are some practical things to keep in mind when renting a car in Costa Rica.

Bring a Credit Card

Bring a credit card in the name of the primary driver. This is mandatory for the deposit, and a credit card in a different name won’t be accepted. You won’t be given the rental car if you can’t show a credit card in the name of the primary driver or if the card doesn’t have sufficient balance for the deposit. If you don’t have a credit card yet, we recommend this credit card.

Navigation

Renting navigation for your car is unnecessary, as you can easily navigate with your phone. We suggest using Google Maps. To navigate offline, download the map of Costa Rica in advance. It’s convenient to pin your booked hotels and attractions in advance so that you have quick access to them. You can also find gas stations, restaurants, and ATMs offline using Google Maps.

Minimum Age for Renting a Car

The minimum age to rent a car in Costa Rica depends on the rental company. In most cases, it’s 21 years old, but some rental companies allow you to rent a car from the age of 18. Drivers under the age of 25 often have to pay a “young driver surcharge.” You’ll find this amount under the specific conditions section during the booking process.

International Driving License

An international driving license is not required in Costa Rica. Just ensure you have a valid driving license with you.

What does it cost to rent a car in Costa Rica?

It is likely that you would want to rent a car from San Jose Airport. When renting a car in Costa Rica, prices can vary depending on the season and how early you book. Booking a rental car through Rentalcars.com is highly recommended for Costa Rica. With a rental car, you always have a chance of damage and problems along the way, which is why it’s smart to book with a reliable party. At Rentalcars, you can always take out a Full Protection Insurance, you can change your booking for free and all conditions are clearly indicated. So you don’t have to worry about snags and if something goes wrong on your trip, everything is always reimbursed and taken care of. This is totally worth it as far as we are concerned, especially on holiday.

Note: Sometimes the local rental company will try to sell you extra insurances. These are absolutely unnecessary as everything is covered with Rentalcars’ Full Protection Insurance. So don’t be fooled because you are 100% covered, even your excess will be refunded in case of damage.

Price hikes due to shortage of cars: There is currently a huge shortage of rental cars worldwide. To survive the corona crisis, car rental companies have had to sell a large portion of their cars. Since demand is rising fast, there are not enough chips for new cars and prices are skyrocketing due to the shortage. As a result, many rental cars are double the price or even fully booked. It’s best to book as early as possible to be sure of a rental car that is still somewhat affordable. At Rentalcars.com, you can currently cancel or change your booking free of charge up to 48 hours in advance, so you are not stuck with anything but still be sure of a rental car.

The experience of traveling in Costa Rica is beyond description. The landscapes are breathtakingly beautiful, colorful animals can be found everywhere, and the locals – known as Ticos & Ticas – are incredibly friendly. Costa Rica literally translates to rich coast in Spanish. Columbus named the country after his first visit in 1502, being impressed by its abundant nature. Traveling in Costa Rica is quite easy, but there are definitely a few things you should know before hopping on the plane. With these 11 tips, you’ll be well-prepared for your journey to beautiful Costa Rica!

#1 Bring Binoculars to Costa Rica

Costa Rica is renowned for its stunning nature and the multitude of animals that inhabit it. While you might get lucky and see some wildlife up close, more often than not, you’ll be observing animals from a distance. Creatures like toucans, parrots, and monkeys are usually high up in the trees. If you want to get a better view of these animals, it’s a great idea to bring binoculars with you on your Costa Rica journey. There’s a wide variety of binoculars available, so check and compare all binoculars to find the one that suits your preferences and budget.

#2 Visit National Parks Early in the Morning

Over 30% of Costa Rica’s land is protected nature reserve. With 28 national parks in the country, they are the major attractions of Costa Rica. The best time to visit national parks is early in the morning. Animals are most active during this time, giving you the best chance to spot them. Additionally, the morning temperature is pleasant, and the hiking trails are less crowded.

#3 Master the Phrase ‘Pura Vida’

You’ll undoubtedly hear the phrase Pura Vida during your trip to Costa Rica. It’s the country’s motto and translates to pure life. This phrase embodies the Costa Rican way of life. You’ll see it everywhere on shirts, posters, and signs. Ticos and Ticas often greet and thank you with it. Pura Vida!

#4 Best Time to Travel in Costa Rica

The best time to visit Costa Rica is between December and April. This period is the dry season, with pleasant warm temperatures. The rainy season, roughly from May to November, is warmer and more humid, with occasional showers. Rainfall is often heavy but followed by sunshine. October tends to have the most rain, so it’s best to avoid it if you’re seeking good weather. The advantage of the rainy season is lush green landscapes, fewer tourists, and lower prices. Learn more about the best time to visit Costa Rica if you want more details.

Save Money: Hotel prices vary greatly depending on the season in Costa Rica. If you want to save money, consider visiting in May, June, September, October, or November. During these months, hotel prices can be up to 60% lower. October is the rainiest month, so the other months are a better choice.

#5 Transportation Tips for Costa Rica

Depending on your budget and preferences, there are various ways to travel within Costa Rica. Here’s a breakdown of different modes of transportation.

Traveling by Public Bus

Local buses are the way to go if you’re traveling on a budget in Costa Rica. Both short rides and longer distances are relatively inexpensive. While it won’t cost you much money, it might take up some of your time. Keep in mind that you might need to make multiple transfers to reach your destination, and the buses might not always have perfect connections. Therefore, public transportation might not be recommended for certain connections.

Traveling by Minivan

Minivans operate between popular destinations and are designed for travelers, taking you directly from point A to point B. These minivans are slightly more expensive than local buses, but they save time and hassle since they take you straight to your destination. Additionally, these minivans offer more comfort. In most cases, they’ll pick you up at your hotel and drop you off at your destination hotel. It’s advisable to book these minivans online a few days in advance to secure a seat.

Traveling by Rental Car

Costa Rica is an ideal destination for a road trip. With a rental car, you can explore the country’s most beautiful spots and have the freedom to go wherever you please. Given Costa Rica’s size, distances are never too long, and traffic is calm. The roads are well-maintained, and the landscapes you encounter along the way are stunning. You can access places that are harder to reach by bus, and you can make stops along the way. Check out all tips for renting a car in Costa Rica if you want to know more.

#6 Traveling in Costa Rica Isn’t Cheap

Unfortunately, there’s a price tag attached to experiencing the beauty of Costa Rica. The country’s major highlights are its national parks, most of which require an entrance fee. On average, this costs around $17 per person. There are also many free attractions to visit, such as the free hot spring in La Fortuna, and all beaches not located in national parks are also free to access.

Dining out in Costa Rica is also quite pricey. On average, you’ll spend about $17 to $22 for a main course at a well-regarded restaurant. If you opt for local eateries, known as “sodas,” you’ll pay around $9 for a main dish. Many hostels offer communal kitchens where you can prepare your own meals as well.

Hotels and hostels come in various sizes and styles. If you prefer to stay in nicer hostels and hotels, prices start around $17 for a bed in a dormitory and $39 for a double room. Of course, prices rise quickly if you’re seeking more luxury and comfort or if you’re booking last-minute. Check out our favorite hotels in Costa Rica to get a good idea of prices for the more enjoyable hostels and hotels.

#7 Tips for Payment in Costa Rica

Below, you’ll find some tips and information about tipping and payment in Costa Rica, so you won’t be caught off guard.

  • In Costa Rica, there’s a 13% value-added tax (VAT) on goods and services, including restaurant prices. Some restaurants include this VAT in their prices, but sometimes it’s not included. Prices shown on restaurant menus are exclusive of this VAT, which is always indicated at the bottom of the menu. So, be sure to pay attention to this.
  • In addition, a 10% service charge is added to your bill, which covers employee wages. This 10% service charge is not a tip. Like the VAT, this may or may not be included, so always check the menu.
  • If you’re satisfied and want to give a little extra, you can round up the final amount or leave some extra change.
  • Using a credit card often incurs extra fees. These fees can range from 4% to 13%. As a result, costs can add up significantly. To avoid this, it’s recommended to pay with cash as much as possible. Withdraw the maximum amount from ATMs to minimize transaction fees.

#8 A Guide is Worth the Money if You Want to Spot Many Animals

During your journey through Costa Rica, you’ll undoubtedly encounter a variety of animals. With a bit of luck, you might spot them by the roadside or from the veranda of your bungalow. However, it’s likely that you’ll only see about 1% of the animals that are actually near you. That’s why it’s worth going out with a guide from time to time. Guides sometimes hear, see, and even smell the animals nearby and can accurately track them down. After all, would you recognize the hiding place of a tarantula as you walked by? Probably not. With a guide, you’ll see many more animals and learn a lot about Costa Rica’s wildlife and nature.

Of course, you don’t need a guide everywhere, but it’s definitely recommended to do so occasionally. The guided walk at the hanging bridges in La Fortuna and the night tour with a biologist in Drake Bay are highly recommended and quite different from each other. If you have a slightly larger budget, a trip to Corcovado National Park is a must-do. This park is the most biodiverse place in Costa Rica.

#9 Tips for Buying a Local SIM Card

If you prefer to stay connected while in Costa Rica, you can purchase a local SIM card. These are available at phone shops and most supermarkets. There are several providers, with Kolbi being considered the best. When buying a SIM card, make sure to bring your passport as you need to be officially registered. Seek assistance from a store representative, as they will need to make a call to the registration service from a different number.

#10 Unique Accommodations in Costa Rica

If you have a bit of extra budget, consider planning a unique overnight stay in Costa Rica. The country offers a variety of one-of-a-kind accommodations. Imagine staying in jungle treehouses, a luxurious caravan by the beach, or glamping with a view of a volcano. These experiences can transform a practical part of your journey into an extraordinary highlight. We’ve uncovered the most remarkable hotels and discovered 10 unique accommodations in Costa Rica that all deserve a spot on your bucket list.

The post 14 Fun Things to Do in Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica appeared first on TRAVELREBELS.

Puerto Viejo is a laid-back village on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. This place captures the hearts of many travelers due to its relaxed vibe. Puerto Viejo exudes coziness with reggae bands performing somewhere, delightful Caribbean cuisine, and breathtakingly beautiful nature. Hop on a bike to explore the coastline or dance the night away with your feet in the sand. Puerto Viejo can also be easily combined with a trip to Panama, as you can travel there from Bocas del Toro in just about four hours. Scroll down quickly and read all my tips for the lovely Puerto Viejo!

How to Get to Puerto Viejo?

It’s important to know that there are two villages in Costa Rica with the name Puerto Viejo. In the northeastern part of the country, you’ll find Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí. The Puerto Viejo I’m writing about is called Puerto Viejo de Talamanca. This village is located in the Limón province, in the southeastern part of Costa Rica. Buses often only display the text “Puerto Viejo” as the destination. So always pay close attention to ensure you’re getting on the right bus. Most people travel to Puerto Viejo from San José, Bocas del Toro, or Tortuguero. Below, you’ll find how to travel from these destinations to Puerto Viejo.

From San José to Puerto Viejo

By local bus: Go to Terminal Atlántico Norte in San José. Multiple buses depart from here to Puerto Viejo throughout the day. You can’t reserve bus tickets in advance; you buy them at the bus station.

By minivan: The minivan ride from San José to Puerto Viejo takes about 5 hours. The easiest way is to book the minivan in advance. You’ll be picked up from your hotel in San José or the airport and dropped off at your accommodation in Puerto Viejo.

By rental car: This is a drive of approximately 215 kilometers (133 miles), and it takes about 5 hours.

From Bocas del Toro (Panama) to Puerto Viejo

By local bus: Take the ferry from Bocas del Toro to Almirante and catch the bus to Guabito. Cross the border there, and then take the bus to Puerto Viejo.

By minivan + ferry: A comfortable way to travel this route is with this minivan + ferry combination, which takes you to Puerto Viejo in about 3.5 hours. The great advantage is that all transfers are well coordinated.

By rental car: Unfortunately, it’s not possible to cross the border with a rental car. You’ll need to return the rental car in Panama and pick up a new one in Puerto Viejo.

From Tortuguero to Puerto Viejo

By local bus + boat: In Tortuguero, take the 3-hour boat ride to Moin. In Moin, take a taxi to Terminal de Mepe in Puerto Limon, and from there, catch the bus to Puerto Viejo.

By minivan: The easiest way to travel from Tortuguero to Puerto Viejo is with a minivan. The entire journey is well organized, and you’ll be taken from hotel to hotel.

By rental car: Since Tortuguero is only accessible by boat, you’ll need to park your rental car at La Pavona Harbour. In Tortuguero, take the boat to La Pavona Harbour. Depending on tides, this journey takes 1 to 2 hours. From La Pavona Harbour, it’s about a 4 to 5-hour drive to Puerto Viejo.

Tips for Transportation in Puerto Viejo

Bicycles are a perfect and affordable mode of transportation in Puerto Viejo. Many attractions are just outside the village and are a bit too far to walk. Therefore, renting a bike is ideal in Puerto Viejo. Tuk-tuks also operate in Puerto Viejo, but these rides can be quite pricey. To put it in perspective: What you pay for a 15-minute tuk-tuk ride can get you a bike rental for 24 hours. However, be cautious when it’s dark; not all bikes have lights, and there are no bike lanes or good lighting along the road. It might be a good idea to bring a bike light.

What to Do in Puerto Viejo?

Even though Puerto Viejo isn’t very large, there’s plenty to keep you entertained for a few days.

Bike from Puerto Viejo to the Fishing Village of Manzanillo

Puerto Viejo is the perfect place to jump on a bike and explore the area! You can rent bikes at many places in Puerto Viejo, and it’s quite affordable. For just a few euros per day, you can cruise around and explore all the beautiful spots of Puerto Viejo.

A great cycling route is from Puerto Viejo to the fishing village of Manzanillo. You’ll bike along a stunning coastal road, passing several beautiful beaches and attractions. Round trip on the same route covers about 26 kilometers (16 miles). Depending on your stops along the way, you can spend half or a full day exploring. Starting early in the morning avoids the heat and lets you combine this with other recommendations in this article. Read on to learn about the beaches and other attractions you’ll encounter on this bike route.

Stops on the bike route: Playa Cocles > Playa Chiquita > Playa Punta Uva > Playa Grande > Ara Manzanillo > Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge. Further in this article, you’ll find detailed information about all these places.

Learn About Parrots at Ara Manzanillo

Ara Manzanillo is a conservation center where they’re helping the great green macaw population to thrive. Due to extensive deforestation for agriculture, the habitat of these parrots was at risk, leading to a decline in their population. Ara Manzanillo works to optimize the birds’ natural habitat for successful breeding.

Every day from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM, you can join a tour here to learn about the macaws, their way of life, how they find partners, and you can witness them being fed around this time. Feeding is done using platforms in the treetops, allowing you to see the macaws up close without disturbing them. While you can’t interact with the parrots and calling them is not allowed, they might occasionally fly closely overhead from one tree to another or perch on a nearby branch to observe you.

Tip: Tickets should be purchased online in advance. I recommend doing this a few days ahead as it can fill up quickly. Also, note that from the main road turn-off, it’s a steep 15-minute uphill walk to reach the entrance of Ara Manzanillo. Unless you have a 4×4 rental car, you can park at the top. Tuk-tuks cannot go up this hill.

Visit Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge

Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge is about 15 kilometers (9 miles) from Puerto Viejo and is a stunning park with several beautiful beaches and viewpoints. Located along the coast near the village of Manzanillo, it’s a perfect addition to your cycling route. However, the park is quite extensive with various routes, so you might want to dedicate a separate day to explore it fully. Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge protects some of Costa Rica’s most endangered flora and fauna. The park features lovely jungle trails, and within just fifteen minutes, you’ll reach a scenic overlook of the coastline. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated as they help maintain the park.

Opening Hours: Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge is open daily from 6:30 AM to 3:00 PM.

Kayaking or Paddleboarding in Puerto Viejo

Imagine if you could only do one thing in Puerto Viejo—kayaking or paddleboarding at Punta Uva should definitely be on your list. At this beach, you can rent a kayak or board from 9:00 AM, allowing you to paddle up the river instead of the ocean. The 2-kilometer (1.25 miles) journey takes about 1.5 hours and is truly stunning. It feels like a dream flight. Once you’re on your board or in your kayak and have paddled under the road bridge, the surroundings become wonderfully peaceful. You’ll be immersed in the beauty of nature and encounter various animals. Many sloths inhabit the trees and occasionally come down to the river for a drink. The river is teeming with turtles, which might swim alongside you or rest in groups on tree trunks in the sun. Moreover, you’ll spot monkeys and iguanas in the trees. This was one of the most enjoyable activities I did in Puerto Viejo.

Play Beach Volleyball at Playa Cocles During Sunset

Playa Cocles, located a 10-minute bike ride from the center of Puerto Viejo, is a lively spot around sunset. It’s bustling with surfers catching their last waves, and groups of people relaxing with music, cold beers, or coconuts sold from small carts. If you’re in the mood for some activity, you can also play a game of beach volleyball on the shore. You’ll find several volleyball courts and plenty of people to challenge for a game as the sun goes down. Also, test your balance by walking on one of the slacklines set up on the beach.

Spot Wildlife in Cahuita National Park Near Puerto Viejo

A short half-hour drive from Puerto Viejo takes you to Cahuita National Park, one of Costa Rica’s most beautiful national parks. The park features a hiking trail with stunning jungle on one side and the sea with multiple white beaches on the other. Along the way, you have a high chance of spotting unique wildlife, such as the vibrant yellow and green viper snakes. You’ll also encounter many monkeys and raccoons, while trees are filled with sloths and reptiles. Plus, you can relax on the beach, take a swim in the water, and during specific months, even snorkel in one of the best-preserved coral reefs. Before you go, check out our tips for Cahuita National Park to make the most of your visit.

Getting There: Take the bus from the Puerto Viejo bus station to Puerto Limon. This bus runs every hour. Get off at Puerto Vargas, and you’ll be right at the entrance of Cahuita National Park.

Visit the Jaguar Rescue Centre in Puerto Viejo

Visit the Jaguar Rescue Centre if you’re curious about Costa Rica’s unique animals. While it might seem like a small zoo at first, the approach is quite different. The Jaguar Rescue Centre takes in sick, injured, or abandoned animals from the country. They provide medical care and use rehabilitation projects to help these animals regain strength, enabling them to return to the wild. Your entrance fee supports this wonderful initiative, providing food, medical care, and proper temporary housing for the animals. During your visit, you’ll learn about sloths, snakes, birds, and other creatures you might not have heard of before. Enthusiastic volunteers will gladly answer your questions during the tour. Tours start at 9:30 AM and 11:30 AM every morning.

Best Sunset Spots in Puerto Viejo

Many of the beaches around Puerto Viejo become lively around sunset. Chino Beach, in the heart of Puerto Viejo, is a popular spot where both locals and travelers gather to enjoy the last rays of the sun. Music boxes are often brought along, and street performers showcase their talents. Relax on the beach or settle down at one of the nearby restaurants. Pirata Tike Bar is a popular beachside bar serving delicious cocktails. Next to Pirata Tike Bar, you’ll find the cozy restaurant Grow, offering prime views of the sunset. They also serve delicious vegetarian food.

Witness the Chocolate-Making Process

Did you know that cocoa contains natural compounds that increase dopamine in your body, making you feel happier and more joyful? No wonder people can become addicted to chocolate! The area around Puerto Viejo is home to many cocoa plants that are turned into delightful chocolate products. At Caribeans, you can book tours from Monday to Saturday to witness and taste this process in person. It’s a short but enjoyable walk up to the plantation, where you might even encounter toucans or sloths along the way. You’ll be guided through the process from fruit to chocolate bar step by step.

Tip: Naturally, you can buy various flavors of chocolate bars in the shop. The unique packaging prevents the chocolate from melting in your bag (unless you leave the bar in direct sunlight), so it’s great to stock up.

Go Surfing or Take a Surf Lesson in Puerto Viejo

The waves of Puerto Viejo are perfect for diving into the sea with a surfboard. Salsa Brava is a well-known reef break in Puerto Viejo that challenges professional surfers to conquer it. However, this wave breaks on a reef that has caused many broken surfboards and accidents. Professionals sometimes even wear helmets here. The average surfer is better off at Playa Cocles, where, during the right tide, you have a wide beach to enjoy with your surfboard. You can rent a surfboard directly on this beach or take a surf lesson from one of the many surf instructors. Are you a beginner surfer? Playa Uva might be more suitable. This beach is smaller, the sea is calmer, and it’s a great place to practice moves on both the beach and in the water.

The Most Beautiful Beaches of Puerto Viejo

There are four beautiful beaches in Puerto Viejo, each worth a visit. You can explore them individually or tick them all off during the bike ride from Puerto Viejo to Manzanillo.

Playa Cocles

Playa Cocles is a large and lively beach where many locals and travelers come to relax. Especially during sunset, it’s a fun place to hang out. You can play volleyball, surf, rent surfboards, and take surf lessons.

Playa Chiquita

A bit further than Playa Cocles is Playa Chiquita. This beach is a bit more challenging to reach and therefore quieter. Park your bike at this point and walk along the path next to the fence towards the beach. You’ll cross a rickety bridge, which your bike can’t go over. You can relax under the trees on this beach, and the sea is calmer for swimming. If you’re hungry for breakfast or lunch, grab a bite at Gypsea Cafe. They offer delicious healthy and nourishing dishes.

Playa Punta Uva

This beach is definitely worth a visit! Playa Punta Uva is located in a small bay and has a pleasant atmosphere. It’s great for surfing, stand-up paddleboarding, or kayaking on the river.

Playa Grande

The last beach on your route features an interesting attraction—an actual shipwreck on the sandy shore. Playa Grande is adjacent to the fishing village of Manzanillo. You can take a breather from your bike ride or take a dip in the sea on this beach.

Best Restaurants in Puerto Viejo

Puerto Viejo is filled with fantastic restaurants of all types and sizes. Here are my favorites for you to consider.

Cafe Rico – This hidden gem is open from 7:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Enjoy a delightful breakfast in a charming garden surrounded by shelves filled with books for reading or exchanging. Cafe Rico is closed on Thursdays and Fridays.

Cafe Viejo –Experience Italian flavors in Costa Rica. Both the pizzas and pastas are delightful.
Gypsea Cafe – This cozy restaurant near Playa Chiquita offers delicious, healthy, and nourishing dishes. Perfect for breakfast or lunch.
Soul Surfer – A great place with an extensive menu of burgers, offering plenty of meat, seafood, and vegetarian options.

Our Favorite Places to Stay in Puerto Viejo

Looking for a cozy hostel near the beach and close to cafes and restaurants? Check out Selina. It’s the perfect place to have a great time with fellow travelers, as the hostel organizes activities like yoga classes, parties, and workshops. Pagalù Hostel is another budget-friendly option. It might not be as fancy as Selina, but it has everything you need for a comfortable stay. There’s a spacious kitchen, a calm atmosphere, and a perfect location. Monteverde is a unique natural area in Costa Rica. It’s renowned for its many hiking trails and hanging bridges that allow you to explore the enchanting surroundings of the cloud forest. Due to its higher elevation, you’ll find a completely different variety of plants and animals here compared to many other places in Costa Rica. Beyond the beautiful hikes, there are plenty of other enjoyable activities in Monteverde, such as ziplining, bungee jumping, or visiting the enormous butterfly garden. Whether you’re seeking adrenaline-packed adventures or a chance to appreciate the beauty of Costa Rica’s nature, Monteverde is the perfect destination for any nature lover. Here, you’ll find information on what to do and tips for the best restaurants and unique hotels.

What Makes Monteverde Unique?

Out of all the forests in the world, only 1% are cloud forests. Cloud forests are found in tropical or subtropical regions and are often located at elevations of 1500 meters (4921 feet) or higher. Monteverde’s cloud forest boasts high biodiversity. You’ll find over 3000 different plant species, 100 mammal species, 400 bird species, 120 reptile and amphibian species, 490 butterflies, and thousands of insect species. Additionally, a veil of mist often hangs between the trees. This mist is created when warm air from lower areas collides with the mountain slopes and rises. As it rises, the moisture in the air condenses into tiny droplets, forming the mist. Without a doubt, Monteverde is a unique destination due to these factors!

How to Get to Monteverde?

A beautiful winding road through the mountains takes you to the village of Santa Elena, which serves as the base for exploring Monteverde. Most people travel from San José, La Fortuna, or Santa Teresa to Monteverde. Below, you’ll find information on how to travel from these destinations to Santa Elena (Monteverde).

From San José to Monteverde

By local bus: A local bus departs from San José to Monteverde every day. This bus travels directly but makes several stops along the way, making the journey quite lengthy. Expect about 5 hours of travel time, depending on traffic. If you want to secure a spot on the bus, you can buy tickets in advance. Tickets at the bus station are slightly cheaper, but there’s a chance the bus might be full.

By minivan: A comfortable way to travel this route is by minivan, which takes around 3.5 hours.

By rental car: This is about a 3-hour journey.

From La Fortuna to Monteverde

By local bus: Taking the local bus for this route might take longer due to the mismatched timings of transfers. In total, you’ll spend about 5 to 7 hours on the road, depending on waiting times. Take the bus from La Fortuna to Tilaran and then transfer to the bus to Monteverde. Prior to your journey, inquire about the exact bus schedules at your accommodation.

By bus + boat: A fun and quick option to travel this route is with the bus and boat combination. You will be picked up by a van at your hotel in La Fortuna, and then you’ll board the boat to cross the lake. On clear days, you can enjoy a beautiful view of the lake and the volcano. After the boat ride, the journey continues in a van to Monteverde. You can reserve this trip in advance, and during the booking, you can specify where you want to be picked up. The minimum number of people is two, and the trip takes about 3.5 hours.

By minivan: The journey from La Fortuna to Monteverde takes around 3.5 hours by minivan. Check out current departure times and reserve a spot in advance.

By rental car: Driving from La Fortuna to Monteverde takes about 3 hours. The route is approximately 100 kilometers (62 miles), but due to the mountainous roads, it might take a bit longer. Take your time and enjoy the beautiful scenery along the way!

From Santa Teresa to Monteverde

By local bus: In Santa Teresa, catch the bus to Paquera. Ask at your accommodation if there’s a direct bus available; if not, you might need to transfer in Cobano. In Paquera, take the ferry to Puntarenas. Ferry tickets can be purchased on-site. In Puntarenas, it’s best to take a taxi to the bus station (2.5 km), where you’ll catch the bus to Monteverde. This journey takes about 2.5 hours.

By minivan: The journey from Santa Teresa to Monteverde takes around 4 to 5 hours by minivan. You’ll be picked up at your hotel in Santa Teresa and dropped off at your hotel in Monteverde. Check current departure times and reserve a spot in advance.

By rental car: It’s a 4 to 5-hour drive from Santa Teresa to Monteverde. Taking the northern route is recommended to avoid using the car ferry.

What to Do in Monteverde?

Depending on your interests, we recommend staying in Monteverde for at least two full days. Here are 12 great tips for things to do in Monteverde.

Visit Monteverde Cloud Forest

Exploring the cloud forest is one of the most exciting activities in Monteverde. There are two parks you can visit: Monteverde Cloud Forest and Santa Elena Cloud Forest. Both parks are easily accessible by rental car and bus. Buses depart several times a day from the main street in the village of Santa Elena to these parks. Both parks are stunning, but there are some important differences between them that you should know about. Here’s a comparison between the two parks.

Monteverde Cloud Forest

  • Entrance fee is $25
  • Can get crowded, especially in the afternoon
  • Multiple hiking trails to spread out the crowds
  • Higher chance of spotting wildlife, including the rare quetzal – better chance with a guide
  • Features a beautiful hanging bridge, waterfall, and viewpoint

Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is one of the most visited cloud forests in the world. If you decide to visit this park, make sure to arrive early. In the middle of Monteverde Cloud Forest, you’ll find a beautiful hanging bridge that you shouldn’t miss. There’s also a viewpoint and a dreamy waterfall. Signs throughout the park will guide you to these spots, so you won’t get lost. Exotic birds, including the magnificent Quetzal, can be found in Monteverde Cloud Forest, but they’re not always easy to spot. If you want a better chance at spotting wildlife, consider booking a guided tour. I explored Monteverde Cloud Forest on my own and unfortunately didn’t encounter many animals.

Santa Elena Cloud Forest

  • Entrance fee is $18
  • Less crowded on the trails
  • Lower chance of spotting wildlife
  • Beautiful hiking trails of various lengths, well-marked with signs
  • No hanging bridges, but a cool viewpoint

If you prefer to avoid the crowds, a great tip is to visit Santa Elena Cloud Forest. The flora here is just as stunning as in Monteverde Cloud Forest, although the chances of spotting wildlife are smaller. Be sure to walk to the viewpoint, as it offers an amazing panoramic view of the cloud forest and the surroundings. At the entrance, you’ll receive a map with various hiking routes and points of interest. Signage along the hiking trails will guide you as well.

Spotting Hummingbirds at Colibri Cafe

Here, hummingbirds are flying all around you! Just before the entrance to Monteverde Cloud Forest, you’ll find Colibri Café, and it’s a great place to enjoy a cup of coffee. Monteverde is home to many hummingbirds, and in this café, they can enjoy the sugar water specially prepared for these birds. Hold onto your coffee cup tight, as the hummingbirds fly right past you.

Tip: Be cautious of coatis (raccoon-like animals). They have become quite bold here and will head straight for any food they spot. They can scratch, so keep your distance from these animals and avoid petting or feeding them.

Take a Coffee Tour in Monteverde

Did you know that drinking coffee was once banned in Europe? Due to the effects it had on people, it was seen as something satanic. It’s hard to imagine that now, right? There are several places in the world where the conditions are favorable for growing coffee, and Monteverde is one of them. You can take a coffee tour here, where they’ll show you the process from the ground to your cup of coffee. I joined this coffee tour, and it was the most enjoyable coffee tour I’ve ever done.

This eight-hectare farm has not only coffee plants but also an edible garden. Goats and chickens contribute compost and byproducts. If you’re here between November and February, you can even pick some coffee beans yourself. This is the season when the coffee beans ripen. Of course, a tasting session of different coffee types is included. You’ll notice the difference in taste when it’s prepared using a traditional Costa Rican Chorreador. English tours are held daily at 9:30 AM and 2:00 PM, and they include shuttle service to and from your accommodation in Monteverde.

Spot Colorful Butterflies at Butterfly Garden

Monteverde is home to a variety of colorful butterfly species. Visiting a butterfly garden to observe them up close is a delightful experience. I visited the Butterfly Garden in Selvatura Park, and it was one of the most photogenic butterfly gardens I’ve ever seen. You can enter the butterfly garden only with a guided tour, which lasts about 45 minutes, and there’s no need to make reservations in advance. If you don’t want to travel all the way to Selvatura Park for butterflies, there’s another butterfly garden in the center of Santa Elena where they offer guided tours.

Tip: Interested in seeing sloths as well? The other half of the Butterfly Garden is a Sloth Sanctuary. They provide a safe haven for sloths that can’t currently live in the wild for various reasons.

Enjoy Beautiful Sunsets in Monteverde

Sunsets are always magical moments, and Monteverde offers several beautiful spots to enjoy the last rays of light. In the center of Santa Elena, Mirador Valle Escondido Preserve is a lovely viewpoint to watch the sunset. There are many benches here, as many people gather to witness the sunset. Many people even crawl under the barbed wire to sit on the stone plateau below for a front-row view. If you want to dine while enjoying the sunset, you can do so at Cafe Capucchino.

Night Tour in Monteverde

The night tour is a fantastic opportunity to experience the unique nature of Monteverde from a completely different perspective. Many of the animals that become active at night have specific characteristics that allow them to thrive in the dark. The guide who takes you on this nighttime adventure will help you spot animals and plants while sharing valuable information. This exciting nocturnal journey offers a chance to see frogs, reptiles, and other creatures in action at night.

Note: Contrary to its name, the tour actually starts in the early evening at 6:00 or 8:00 PM.

Ziplining in Monteverde

If you’re seeking an adrenaline rush, ziplining in Monteverde is perfect for you! With ziplines stretching from one mountain to another over and through the Monteverde jungle, you’re in for an exciting adventure. I went on this thrilling tour because it includes a variety of ziplines. In addition to the standard ziplines, this tour offers a Tarzan swing, a superman zipline (over 1000 meters! ; 3280 feet!), and abseiling. This variety adds an extra level of excitement and allows you to experience Monteverde’s nature in a completely unique way.

Costa Rica’s Highest Bungee Jump

If you’re a true thrill-seeker and ziplining isn’t challenging enough for you, consider taking the plunge from a height of 143 meters (469 feet) among the mountains of Monteverde! This bungee jump is the tallest in Central America and guarantees an extreme adrenaline rush. Its unique location and construction make it even more extraordinary. A carriage is suspended among the treetops at a height of 143 meters (469 feet), and you jump from here, experiencing a free fall of 60 meters (197 feet). You can definitely check this off your bucket list!

Walk on Monteverde’s Hanging Bridges

Another exciting way to explore the unique Monteverde cloud forest is by taking a walk on the hanging bridges at Sky Adventures Monteverde Park. You’ll embark on a approximately two-hour route through the forest, crossing several bridges, some of which are as long as 236 meters (774 feet) and as high as 70 meters (230 feet). While we visited both the hanging bridges in Monteverde and in La Fortuna, we found the ones in La Fortuna to be slightly more impressive. If you’re also going to La Fortuna, we recommend visiting the hanging bridges there.

Learn About Poison Dart Frogs at Frog Pond

If you haven’t had the chance to spot the colorful Costa Rican frogs, a visit to Frog Pond could be a fun experience! Here, you can observe over 25 different species of frogs, toads, and other amphibians in terrariums during an educational tour. The evening tour is particularly recommended, as most frogs are active during the nighttime. The number of frogs worldwide is rapidly declining, so a portion of the proceeds from these tours goes towards frog conservation and research.

Admire the Unique Ficus La Raiz Tree

In Monteverde, you can witness the breathtaking beauty of nature firsthand. Over time, some unique places emerge that can’t be found anywhere else on Earth. The Ficus La Raiz is a tree whose roots have grown in such a way that they’ve formed a natural bridge. From the center of Santa Elena, you can walk to this spot and descend via the stairs to reach the Ficus La Raiz tree.

Best Restaurants in Monteverde & Santa Elena

After all these exciting activities, you’re bound to get hungry! Fortunately, there are plenty of excellent restaurants and cafes to choose from. Here are my recommendations for Monteverde & Santa Elena.

The Open Kitchen – This stylish restaurant offers a variety of delicious dishes from different cuisines. You can find items like acai bowls, shakshuka, falafel, couscous, fish & chips, ceviche, and souvlaki on the menu. They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Stella’s Monteverde – Enjoy your meal in a beautiful garden where tropical birds fly around. They serve tasty burritos, sandwiches, quiche, and salads among other options.
Orchid Coffee Shop – In this cheerful café, you can savor the best coffee and treat yourself to a sweet pastry. If you’re not into sweets, their paninis are also quite delicious.
Sabor Tico – Visit this spot if you want to experience authentic Costa Rican cuisine. Expect dishes with beans, guacamole, rice, meat, and fish. The portions here are generous, and the prices are very reasonable.
Soda La Amistad – This soda is another great option for an affordable lunch or dinner. The staff is incredibly friendly.
Cafe Capucchino y Restaurante – You can enjoy delicious international breakfast, lunch, and dinner here from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Apart from the great food, you can also relish the beautiful view, including sunset.
Taco Taco – As the name suggests, you can have delicious tacos here at an affordable price.
El Bosque Restaurante Tradicional – This restaurant offers traditional Costa Rican food and tasty paninis. The terrace is surrounded by nature, so you might spot animals while you dine.

Our Favorite Places to Stay in Monteverde & Santa Elena

If you’re on a budget, Cabinas Vista Al Golfo is a great choice. It’s not luxurious, but it offers good value for the price you pay. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful when it comes to booking activities. For a mid-range hotel, consider La Casa de la Montaña. This B&B places you in the heart of nature, and you’re likely to spot many animals from here. It’s about a mile from the town and is run by a lovely family who go out of their way to make your stay enjoyable. If you have a more generous budget, Los Pinos Lodge is fantastic. You’ll stay in a detached cottage with all the amenities. From your private terrace, you can already spot a lot of wildlife, and the lodge also offers exciting hiking opportunities.

Santa Teresa in Costa Rica is such a place where you’ll likely want to stay much longer than you initially thought. The laid-back vibe, stunning beaches, and charming hotspots are definitely to blame for that. Santa Teresa is located in the south of Nicoya, a peninsula that’s unique as it’s a Blue Zone. These are rare regions where people live noticeably healthier and longer lives compared to other places around the world. Many travelers come to Santa Teresa for surfing, but even if you don’t surf, it’s a delightful destination. You’ll find numerous great restaurants, cute shops, and lively nightlife spots offering something fun to do every day of the week. If you’re curious about what there is to do, scroll down quickly and read all the tips for Santa Teresa!

How to Get to Santa Teresa?

Most people travel from Monteverde or San José to Santa Teresa. Below, you’ll find information on how to travel to Santa Teresa from these destinations.

From Monteverde to Santa Teresa

By local bus: In Monteverde, take the bus to Puntarenas. This bus ride takes about 2.5 hours. From Puntarenas, take a taxi to the port (2.5 km; 1.5 miles) and board the ferry to Paquera. The ferry departs multiple times a day, and you can buy a ticket on-site. In Paquera, take the bus to Cobano, where you can then switch to the bus to Santa Teresa. If you miss the connection, taking a taxi to Santa Teresa is best.

By minivan: This journey takes about 4 to 5 hours by minivan. You’ll be picked up from your hotel in Monteverde and dropped off at your hotel in Santa Teresa. Check the current departure times and reserve a spot on the bus in advance.

By rental car: This is a drive of approximately 4 to 5 hours. It’s best to take the northern route so you don’t have to take the car on the ferry.

From San José to Santa Teresa

By local bus: The cheapest way is to travel by local bus. In San José, take the bus to Puntarenas and then a taxi to the port (2.5 km; 1.5 miles). From there, board the ferry to Paquera and in Paquera, take the bus to Cobano. You can then switch to the bus to Santa Teresa. If you miss the connection, it’s best to take a taxi to Santa Teresa.

You’ll bring your car onto the ferry, and from Paquera, it’s another one hour and 20 minutes of driving to Santa Teresa. If you’re traveling by rental car, it’s advisable to reserve the ferry a few days in advance. You can do this here with a credit card. Under Tipo de Vehiculo, select Vehículo Liviano when you have a passenger car.

What to Do in Santa Teresa?

Santa Teresa is the perfect destination to unwind for a few days during your journey through Costa Rica. We’ve been there multiple times and have searched for the best hotspots, beaches, and activities. Here are the things to do that you shouldn’t miss in Santa Teresa.

Ultimate Relaxation at Banana Beach Bar

If you want to enjoy cocktails, smoothies, great food, a lively atmosphere, and reggae music, then settle in at Banana Beach Bar. It’s a laid-back bar right on the beach among the palm trees. Perfect for watching the magical sunset at the end of the afternoon with your feet in the sand. Pura Vida!

Surfing or Taking Surf Lessons in Santa Teresa

Santa Teresa is one of the best places for surfing in Costa Rica. During the rainy season between May and November, the waves are big and suitable for experienced surfers. In the dry season between December and April, the waves are less intense, making it perfect for beginner and intermediate surfers. Playa Hermosa offers the best waves for beginners, and there are always surf instructors available. Playa Santa Teresa is also a good spot for surfing.

Horseback Riding in Santa Teresa

Horseback riding is one of the most enjoyable activities in Santa Teresa. Through Horizonte, you can book a tour that takes you horseback riding across the expansive Manzanillo Beach, through the countryside, and across rivers. It’s especially memorable to go horseback riding during sunrise or sunset. Often, tides are taken into account so that the beach is wide enough for galloping along the shore. Horizonte is run by Michelle, who has a great love for her horses. You don’t need prior horseback riding experience.

Yoga in Santa Teresa

Santa Teresa is the perfect destination to find tranquility during your travels, and yoga is a highly popular activity here. Selina Santa Teresa South offers yoga classes on their yoga deck and on the beach. However, a beach yoga class around sunset might be less relaxing due to the crowd. In my opinion, you’d better opt for a yoga class at Horizon. They have a beautiful panoramic yoga deck with an amazing view of the ocean. Check out their Instagram for their yoga class schedule.

Swimming at Vista de Olas

Vista de Olas is a wonderful place to relax for an afternoon and watch the sunset. Located on a higher elevation, Vista de Olas offers a stunning view of Playa Santa Teresa. From the infinity pool, you can enjoy a beautiful sunset, and as the sky fills with warm colors, you’ll see beach bonfires being lit. Vista de Olas is a hotel, and non-guests can pay $30 upfront for food and drinks. Afterward, you’re allowed to use the pool. If you order two to three drinks and a main course, you’ll spend around the minimum $30 requirement. Of course, you can also choose to stay at Vista de Olas to enjoy the view and the pool every day.

Shopping at Charming Boutique Stores

Santa Teresa isn’t necessarily a shopper’s paradise, but there are a few charming boutique stores scattered around. You can find unique jewelry, typical surf clothing, and beautiful interior accessories. Most of the shops are located near Playa Carmen, but there are also some cool shops along the road from Playa Carmen to Playa Santa Teresa.

Parties and Enjoying Live Music in Santa Teresa

Every evening, you can find some entertainment in Santa Teresa. There’s live music at Kika on Thursday nights, and Banana Beach Bar often hosts parties on the weekends. It’s a good idea to ask at your hotel or inquire with a local to find out what’s happening, as the events can vary from season to season.

Take a Dip in the Mal Pais Tide Pools

Sometimes, nature creates picturesque landscapes. The Mal Pais Tide Pools are natural pools that fill with seawater during high tide and provide a lovely spot to soak in during low tide. The pools are crystal clear and warm up quickly in the sun. Check here (up to one week in advance) to find out the timing of high and low tides. You’ll find these pools near the small fishing village of Mal Pais, a few miles from Santa Teresa. To get there, navigate to this location, and then walk to the beach. Follow the rocks on the left side of the beach, and you’ll come across the Mal Pais Tide Pools.

Tip: Be mindful of sea urchins and crabs that might have entered the pools with the seawater.

Take a Trip to Montezuma

If you’d like to explore more of the Nicoya Peninsula, consider taking a trip to Montezuma. This tiny village in the southern part of the peninsula has a very relaxed atmosphere. It’s only a 40-minute drive by rental car or an hour by bus from Santa Teresa. You can visit Montezuma as a day trip or choose to stay there for a few days. I stayed there for a few days, and you can find all the tips for things to do in Montezuma here.

The Most Beautiful Beaches of Santa Teresa

Of course, you’re coming to Santa Teresa primarily for its fantastic beaches, and they won’t disappoint you. The beaches are especially stunning because there’s very little construction right on the beach. There’s often about 50 meters of natural space between the beach and the road. Below, you’ll learn about the differences between the beaches of Santa Teresa.

Playa Santa Teresa

Playa Santa Teresa is the most famous beach and directly borders the village. During the day, people surf, swim, and enjoy the sun. Many people gather at Playa Santa Teresa to witness the colorful spectacle of the sunset. The sunset can be truly phenomenal under the right conditions.

Tip: Because there are few accommodations and restaurants directly on the beach, there’s limited visibility at night, and the beach is often deserted. For safety reasons, it’s not recommended to go to the beach when it’s dark.

Playa Hermosa

Playa Hermosa is located to the north of Santa Teresa and is a beautiful spot for swimming and surfing. The beach has soft sand and gentle waves, making it an ideal place for beginner surfers to take lessons. It’s less crowded here compared to Playa Santa Teresa. Feeling hungry? Grab a bite to eat at Couleur Café. This trendy spot offers delicious and healthy dishes.

Playa Carmen

Playa Carmen is situated to the south of Santa Teresa. The beach is dotted with palm trees, exudes a relaxed atmosphere, and features a few restaurants and stalls. During low tide, clear pools form between certain rocks, perfect for a refreshing dip. During high tide, be cautious of the rocks in the sea if you’re swimming or surfing.

Playa Manzanillo

Playa Manzanillo is about 9 km (5.5 miles) north of the village and is a hidden beach that not many people know about. You’ll truly feel like you’re in paradise here! It’s the perfect place to relax and enjoy the tranquility. It’s a 25-minute drive to Playa Manzanillo by rental car.

Playa Cuevas

This beach is officially known as Playa Cuevas but is also nicknamed Secret Beach. You can only access it by following a walking path through the trees from the parking area, eventually leading you to this hidden beach. During low tide, a pool forms between the rocks here, offering calm waters. It’s located near the Mal Pais Tide Pools, so you can easily combine these spots.

Best Restaurants in Santa Teresa

In addition to the many beautiful beaches and fun activities, you’ll find a plethora of excellent restaurants in Santa Teresa. We’ve tried many of them, and these are our top recommendations.

The Bakery – Whether you want breakfast, lunch, or dinner, The Bakery is always a great choice! It’s one of the most popular eateries, and their extensive menu includes items like paninis, bagels, avocado toast, pizzas, pastas, and much more.
Eat Street – These are three small eateries with a shared terrace. Each eatery has a different menu, and there’s a fun and relaxed atmosphere.
The Somos Cafe – Start your day right at Somos Cafe. Here, you can enjoy healthy breakfasts in a cozy setting. They also serve delicious cocktails for dinner.
Zula Restaurant – If you love Middle Eastern cuisine, Zula Restaurant is a must-visit. The falafel here is amazing!
Ani’s Bowls and Salads – If you’re looking to get your daily dose of fruits and vegetables, this is the place to be.
Vermú – You can also have a fantastic breakfast and lunch here. Acai bowls, shakshuka, and bagels are on the menu.
Taco Corner – You’ll find the best tacos here at an affordable price!
Koji’s – The place to be for delicious sushi and a wide selection of wines.
Soda Tiquicia – For cheap and tasty Costa Rican food, this is the spot. Most dishes consist of rice, beans, salad, fries, and meat or fish.

Our Favorite Places to Stay in Santa Teresa

If you stay at Santa Teresa Surf Vista Villas, you can enjoy a phenomenal view. The hotel is situated a bit higher, allowing you to have expansive views of the jungle and the ocean from your room and the pool. The comfort of this hotel is also top-notch. You’ll stay in a spacious room with air conditioning, a comfortable bed, an outdoor kitchen, and a large balcony. Another option, Canaima Chill House, is a hidden paradise in Santa Teresa. This hotel is nestled in the jungle, and during our stay, we saw a group of howler monkeys swinging through the trees every day! There’s a lovely pool and even a jacuzzi. Keep in mind that it’s located on a hill, and you’ll need a 4×4 to reach this hotel. If you’re looking for a cozy and peaceful hostel, you should check out Salty Enthusiasts.

Uvita is a peaceful coastal village on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. It’s not as crowded as some other beach destinations, and there are many beautiful places to explore in the surrounding area. From Uvita, you can visit stunning waterfalls, a beautiful national park, and enjoy activities like horseback riding, surfing, and whale watching. You’ll also find some unique accommodations here, nestled in the jungle with amazing views. Check out these 10 tips for fun things to do in Uvita!

How to Get to Uvita

Most people travel from Manuel Antonio (base: Quepos) or Drake Bay to Uvita. Below are the ways to travel from these destinations to Uvita.

From Manuel Antonio (Quepos) to Uvita

By Local Bus: The bus from Quepos to Uvita takes about 2 hours. Buses by Trasportes Blanco y Hernandez S.A operate multiple times a day. Check with your hotel or hostel for exact departure times.

By Rental Car: This is a 60 km drive and takes approximately one hour.

From Drake Bay to Uvita

By Local Bus + Boat: Take the boat from Drake Bay to Sierpe and then catch a bus or taxi to Palmar Norte. From Palmar Norte, take the bus to Uvita.

By Rental Car: Take the boat from Drake Bay to Sierpe and retrieve your parked car here. It’s about an hour’s drive from Sierpe to Uvita.

What to Do in Uvita?

It’s recommended to stay in Uvita for at least two days, but definitely plan some extra days if you want to relax on the beach or go surfing.

Explore the Whale Tail of Marino Ballena National Park

Nature sometimes creates extraordinary coincidences. In Marino Ballena National Park, a rock and sand formation precisely resembles the shape of a whale’s tail. This alone looks quite remarkable, but it’s also the spot where hundreds of humpback whales gather every year. The whale tail forms during low tide when the sea retreats. It’s barely visible during high tide. So, visit Marino Ballena National Park during low tide and walk about 15 minutes from Uvita village to the whale tail. You’ll walk along a beautiful dark brown beach bordered by rugged jungle where you might even spot parrots, toucans, and pelicans flying by. The entrance fee for Marino Ballena National Park is $8, and you can check here (up to one week in advance) for the timing of tides.

Tip: Officially, Marino Ballena National Park is closed on Mondays. However, most Mondays, there’s no one at the entrance, so you can walk in. If someone is there and you’re denied entry, you can also walk along the beach.

Watch the Sunset at Playa Uvita

Playa Uvita is adjacent to Uvita village and is a beautiful, expansive beach. Since it’s part of the Marino Balleno National Park, there’s a small entry fee for Playa Uvita. However, this ticket is valid all day, allowing you to leave and re-enter the park as many times as you’d like. The crescent-shaped beach of Playa Uvita is perfect for laying out your towel, and its waves are popular among experienced surfers.

Watching the sunset from Playa Uvita is also a great tip. If you’re lucky, the sunset aligns with the tide, creating a shallow layer of water on the beach and a reflection of the sunset. Even if this isn’t the case, Playa Uvita is still one of the most beautiful spots to witness the sunset in Costa Rica. Bring some beers or a bottle of wine and savor this unique location.

Hike to the Nauyaca Waterfalls

About a half-hour’s drive from Uvita, you’ll find the Nauyaca Waterfalls, often crowned as the most beautiful waterfall in Costa Rica by many travelers. The Nauyaca Waterfalls consist of two waterfalls, with water cascading over 200 meters (656 feet) down.

The easiest way to reach them is by rental car. After paying the entrance fee at the office on the main road, you can take the downhill turn to park your car there. If you prefer public transportation, I recommend taking the first bus around 6:00 heading towards San Isidro. This bus stops right at the entrance to the Nauyaca Waterfalls. It’s not too warm at that time, and you’ll have the waterfalls almost to yourself. You can also leave later, but in that case, get off at Dominical. The easiest way from there is to take a taxi to the entrance of the Nauyaca Waterfalls.

From the entrance, it’s still a sturdy 4 km hike to the waterfalls, so wear good shoes and bring enough water. Along the way, you might encounter monkeys, toucans, and other exotic animals, so keep your ears and eyes open. If you’re not up for hiking, there are pickups that shuttle between the entrance and the Nauyaca Waterfalls and back. The downside is that you won’t truly enjoy the scenic route, and the chances of spotting wildlife are significantly reduced. Another option is to go to the Nauyaca Waterfalls on horseback. You’ll spend about two hours at the waterfalls, and lunch is included. This is a wonderful way to reach the Nauyaca Waterfalls, but it can be quite pricey.

The water of the Nauyaca Waterfalls is often turquoise blue, but as you can see in the photo below, that wasn’t the case during my visit. It had rained a lot just before I arrived, so the water was brown. This isn’t always the case, though.

Have a Meal at One of the Many Hotspots in the Surf Village of Dominical

On your way back from the Nauyaca Waterfalls, you’ll pass by the surf village of Dominical, and it’s a great place to make a stop. The atmosphere here is lively, and you’ll find numerous cafes and restaurants. Enjoy delicious coffee and breakfast at Cafe Mono Congo or savor craft beer at Fuego Brew Company.

Relax at Playa Hermosa

If you’re in the mood to lay out on the beach with your towel, Playa Hermosa is a wonderful choice. Located just outside Marino Balleno National Park, Playa Hermosa is the only free-to-enter beach around Uvita. The clear blue water is perfect for swimming, and beginner to intermediate surfers can catch some waves here. That’s why this beautiful 5-kilometer-long (3-mile-long) beach is a popular spot to hang out. Sometimes, you’ll find a few small stalls at the entrance of Playa Hermosa where you can buy things like a cold coconut or a portion of ceviche. To be safe, bring enough drinks and snacks in case nothing is available for purchase.

Take a Dip in the Catarata Uvita Waterfall

One of the most enjoyable things to do in Uvita is to visit Catarata Uvita. It’s a beautiful waterfall hidden in the jungle where you can take a refreshing swim. Perfect for cooling off on a hot day! For a bit of adrenaline, climb up the staircase. From there, you can jump into the water from the rocks or slide down the natural slide. There’s a small entrance fee for this waterfall at the restaurant by the entrance. You can also grab a tasty smoothie or a snack here for a picnic by the waterfall. It’s a half-hour walk from the main street in Uvita to the entrance of Catarata Uvita, or you can take a taxi if you’d rather not walk.

Dine or Have Lunch at Gusto Italian

Besides the delicious food at Gusto Italian, you come here mainly for the location. This restaurant is situated a bit higher up on the mountain, nestled in the jungle with a view of the ocean. If you’re dining here, make sure to arrive before sunset, because trust me, you don’t want to miss it. Another reason to go while it’s still light: there’s a good chance you’ll see toucans, parrots, and howler monkeys here! Listen closely to the sounds and ask for binoculars from one of the owners if you spot something. Gusto Italian is a popular spot, so it’s wise to make a reservation in advance through their Facebook page.

Note: The road to Gusto Italian is quite steep and can be a challenge if you don’t have a 4×4 vehicle. It should be doable with a regular car, but be prepared for a tougher uphill drive.

Horseback Riding in Uvita

A fantastic activity to try in Uvita is horseback riding. You don’t need to be an experienced rider, as even if you’ve never been on a horse, the trained horses and guides can show you a beautiful part of Uvita. Stroll along peaceful paths through the stunning nature or opt for a ride on the beach, where you’ll head towards a gorgeous sunset in the late afternoon. The tours by Rancho La Merced come highly recommended in Uvita.

Whale Watching in Uvita

The waters around Costa Rica are teeming with life, and from Uvita, you can head out to sea to spot whales. In addition to humpback whales that can steal the show by leaping spectacularly out of the water, you also have a chance to encounter dolphins and turtles. The whale-watching season is from mid-July to the end of October and from January to March. If you join this exciting tour, you’ll also visit beautiful snorkeling spots.

Dancing at the Envision Festival

Once a year, the Envision Festival takes place in Uvita. This event occurs around late February / early March each year and revolves around creativity, art, spirituality, yoga, and of course, music. You can only purchase tickets for the entire festival and not for single days. Tickets cost around $380. While I haven’t been there myself, it’s known to be a very unique and enjoyable festival.

Tips for Getting Around in Uvita

To explore the Uvita area on a budget, you can use local buses. However, the buses don’t run all day, only a few times a day. It’s a good idea to check with your hostel or hotel for the current bus schedules. For short distances in Uvita, a bicycle is a perfect mode of transportation. You can rent bikes at La Casa Del Ciclista. Of course, you can also use taxis in Uvita.

Best Restaurants in Uvita

Even though Uvita is a small village, there are plenty of wonderful cafes and restaurants where you can enjoy delicious meals. I’ve compiled my favorites for you.

Indómitos Cafe – A super cozy spot where they turn every dish into a delight. Everything is vegetarian, and they offer tasty smoothie bowls, veggie burgers, falafel, quinoa salads, and more on their menu.
Bagel Time Bakery – Grab a delicious sandwich at Uvita’s best bakery. Perfect for an affordable breakfast or lunch on the go.
Sibu Cafe – Despite being located along a busy road, Sibu Cafe is still a recommendation. Enjoy great coffee, healthy smoothies, and of course, delicious food here.
Pizza Time – The best place for pizza in Uvita!
Soda Ranchito Dona Maria – Here, you can have an inexpensive local breakfast or lunch. The portions are generous, so you won’t leave hungry.
Gusto Italian – I’ll mention it again for good measure, as this tip is definitely not one to be missed.
Uvita Gastro Park – An open-air food court with various food trucks. Enjoy different types of international street food and have a drink in the evening while enjoying some music.

Our Favorite Places to Stay in Uvita

Cascada Verde is a special place to stay in Uvita. It’s not overly luxurious, but you’ll be amidst the jungle for a very reasonable price. You’ll frequently see toucans, parrots, and hummingbirds fly by, and with a bit of luck, you might spot monkeys and sloths. The atmosphere is delightful, and they offer both cozy double rooms and dormitories. At Tropical Beach, you can expect affordable luxury. There’s a nice swimming pool, air-conditioned rooms with comfortable beds, and hot showers. Moreover, it’s centrally located in Uvita. If you have a slightly larger budget, Oasis Uvita is absolutely fantastic. This hotel is nestled in nature, and the owners have created a small paradise. Situated higher up the mountain, it offers stunning views, a lovely pool, and beautiful rooms. The owner is a chef, so you can expect a delightful breakfast. Note that Oasis Uvita is a bit farther from the town center, and a 4×4 vehicle is required to reach it.

Manuel Antonio is an incredibly beautiful national park on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. As you wander through the park, you’re very likely to encounter wildlife. It’s even one of the best places in Costa Rica to spot sloths! We’ve visited Manuel Antonio National Park twice and both times have seen numerous raccoons, monkeys, and sloths. Besides the abundant wildlife, the park boasts white sandy beaches with clear blue water lined with palm trees. Taking a refreshing swim here after your hike is delightful. If you’re planning to visit Manuel Antonio National Park, be sure to check out these 9 tips in advance to make the most of your visit.

Note: Manuel Antonio is the smallest national park in Costa Rica and also the most visited, so be prepared for it to often be crowded. If you find this bothersome, consider visiting one of the less frequented parks such as Tortuguero National Park or Corcovado National Park.

#1 Reserve Manuel Antonio Tickets Online

To limit and spread the crowds, you can no longer simply purchase tickets at the entrance since 2022. You need to reserve tickets for Manuel Antonio National Park online. It’s wise to do this in advance because you must choose a date and time slot. This ensures that your preferred day and time are still available. You can reserve tickets here and payment is required with a credit card. Please note that this website doesn’t always function perfectly. If something goes wrong after entering your credit card details, double-check whether the payment hasn’t been deducted before making another attempt. Trying a different browser might help. Tickets might end up in your spam folder, so don’t forget to check there.

#2 Visit Manuel Antonio as Early as Possible and Avoid Tuesdays

Manuel Antonio is open from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM and is closed every Tuesday. It’s best to go early as this is when you have the highest chance of spotting animals. Animals are most active in the morning. The entrance fee for Manuel Antonio is $18 per person and free for children under 2 years old.

#3 Rules Regarding Food, Drinks, & Smoking

Since 2022, you’re not allowed to bring food into Manuel Antonio as they aim to minimize the environmental impact. Human waste often ends up in nature, and visitors inadvertently feed the wild animals, which is not the intention. The only items permitted to bring are water and soda. Your bag will be checked at the park entrance, and anything prohibited will be discarded. Smoking is also prohibited in Manuel Antonio, and cigarettes will be disposed of. If you have any trash, always take it back with you or dispose of it in the bins and never feed the wild animals.

Tip: Tap water is not drinkable in Costa Rica. Therefore, bring a reusable bottle with you on your trip as you can refill it at many places, reducing the need for plastic bottles.

#4 Getting to Manuel Antonio

The village of Quepos is close to Manuel Antonio, and you’ll often be dropped off there by the bus. It’s also possible that the bus goes directly to the park entrance. If you’re traveling by minivan, they’ll usually drop you off at your hostel or hotel. Most people travel from Uvita, Drake Bay, or San José to Manuel Antonio. Below, you’ll find how to get there from these destinations.

From Uvita to Quepos, Manuel Antonio

Using the local bus: There’s a direct bus from Uvita to Quepos. The travel time is about 1.5 to 2 hours.
Using a rental car: This is about an hour’s drive.

From Drake Bay to Quepos, Manuel Antonio

By bus + boat: Board the boat from Drake Bay to Sierpe and then take a taxi or bus to Palmar Norte. From there, a bus will take you to Quepos in just over 2 hours.

Using a rental car: It depends on how you reached Drake Bay, as there are two options for this route when traveling by rental car. If you drove all the way to Drake Bay, expect about a 4-hour drive to Manuel Antonio. If you parked your car in Sierpe, take the boat from Drake Bay to Sierpe, and it’s a 2-hour drive from Sierpe to Manuel Antonio.

From San José to Quepos, Manuel Antonio

By local bus: The cheapest way to travel from San José to Manuel Antonio is by the local bus. Direct buses to Quepos and Manuel Antonio depart from this bus station. The local bus takes about 5 hours, and you can buy bus tickets at the station. Check here for the current departure times of this bus.

By minivan: A comfortable, faster but slightly more expensive option is to travel by minivan. You’ll be picked up from your hotel in San José and dropped off at your hotel in Manuel Antonio or Quepos. The minivan takes about 4 hours.

Using a rental car: This is a journey of about 3 hours.

#5 The Hiking Trails in Manuel Antonio

The hiking trails in Manuel Antonio National Park are well-marked, and getting lost is unlikely. The paths are well-maintained, and you’ll come across wooden boardwalks here and there. The majority of the park consists of the main trail, Sendero Principal. This is a mostly flat path, making it easy to walk. It’s highly recommended to also explore the trail on the Punta Catedral peninsula. This hiking path has more elevation changes and takes you to various viewpoints. This part of the park is less crowded and equally stunning.

#6 Park Only at the Entrance of Manuel Antonio

If you’re traveling with a rental car to Manuel Antonio, you’ll need to park it somewhere near the park entrance. About two kilometers (1.2 mile) before the entrance of Manuel Antonio, you’ll encounter people waving and calling out for you to park with them. If you do this, you’ll still have quite a walk to the entrance, and there are usually plenty of parking spots much closer. Therefore, check your navigation carefully when you’re nearly there and park as close to the entrance as possible. You can always turn around at the roundabout at the end if needed due to the last parking lot being full. The usual price to park your rental car is 3000-5000 CRC.

#7 Keep an Eye on Your Belongings at the Beach

Due to some people feeding animals, certain monkeys and raccoons have become quite bold. They are not afraid to take a peek into your bag in hopes of finding some food. So always make sure to close your bag securely and be cautious when you go for a swim. The advantage is that sometimes the raccoons and monkeys come very close.

#8 Take a Trip to Nauyaca Waterfalls

About 30 kilometers (18 miles) south of Manuel Antonio, you’ll find the coastal town of Dominical. From here, it’s a short drive to the Nauyaca Waterfalls. These waterfalls consist of two falls where the water plunges over 200 meters (656 feet). From the entrance, it’s a sturdy 4 km hike to the waterfalls, so wear good shoes and bring enough water. Along the way, you might encounter monkeys, toucans, and other exotic animals, so keep your ears and eyes open. If you’re not in the mood for hiking, there are pickups that go from the entrance to the Nauyaca Waterfalls and back. Eventually, you’ll arrive at the waterfalls and can take a refreshing dip in the water. For the truly adventurous, you can even jump from the waterfall.

Tip: If you’re continuing to Uvita after visiting Manuel Antonio, you’ll pass by the Nauyaca Waterfalls. If you’re traveling by rental car, you can stop here and visit the waterfalls. If you’re taking the bus, it’s more convenient to visit the waterfall as a side trip from Uvita, as it’s closer to the falls than Manuel Antonio.

#9 A Guide is Not a Necessity but Still Interesting

Animals like monkeys and raccoons are not very shy and are easily spotted. However, there are still many other animals in Manuel Antonio that are often difficult to see. That’s why it can be very enjoyable to go out with a guide. In addition to effortlessly spotting the most elusive animals, the guide will teach you about the biodiversity of Manuel Antonio National Park. You’ll also spot small creatures like poison frogs, birds, and insects. The guide will have a professional pair of binoculars, so you can admire the animals up close.

Best Restaurants near Manuel Antonio

De Falafel Bar – Here, you can enjoy the most delicious falafel, kebab, or shawarma sandwiches. You can fill your sandwich at the salad bar and definitely order a fresh smoothie as well. You’ll find De Falafel Bar 3 km from the entrance of Manuel Antonio.
