Curacao is a paradise destination known for its sun, sea, and beaches, but this Caribbean island off the coast of Venezuela has much more to offer than just that. In addition to lounging on azure blue waters or sipping cocktails on pristine white beaches, you can also get active. Curacao has something for everyone and is sure not to disappoint. We’ve scoured Curacao from east to west to find the coolest hotspots, most exciting activities, and the most beautiful sights. In this article, you’ll find our selection of the 15 best things to do (and tips) in Curacao. Welcome to Curacao!

What about transportation in Curacao?

Curacao offers plenty of beauty to discover, both in the east and the west, and everywhere in between. It’s not a large island, but when you drive from east to west, you’re still in for a journey of about an hour. The attractions are scattered across the island, so if you want to explore Curacao, you’ll need transportation. Public transportation takes a lot of time and is quite limited, so it’s not really recommended. The most enjoyable and practical way to explore Curacao is by renting a car. This gives you the freedom to go wherever you want, and traffic in Curacao is very relaxed. We had a rental car throughout our entire stay, but if you’re on a tighter budget, you can also rent a car for just part of your vacation. If you don’t want or can’t rent a car, you can also book tours and excursions that take you to different parts of Curacao. However, this option is usually more expensive, and you’ll have less freedom to come and go as you please. Check out our tips for renting and driving a car in Curacao before your trip.

The Most Exciting Things to Do in Curacao

Whether you’re going for one or two weeks, with these tips, you won’t get bored in Curacao!

Climb the Christoffelberg

Of course, you come to Curacao to relax, but you can’t leave the island without climbing the Christoffelberg. This is the highest point in Curacao, and from here, you have a fantastic 360-degree view of the entire island. The Christoffelberg stands at 375 meters (1230 feet), and the climb takes about 1 to 1.5 hours. Go early in the morning to beat the heat and enjoy the sunrise while hiking. Along the way, you’ll encounter the most beautiful tropical plants and birds. Planning to make the climb? Be sure to read our tips for climbing the Christoffelberg.

Explore the lesser-known side of Curacao on an ATV

One of the most exciting things to do in Curacao, in our opinion, is the 3.5-hour quad tour. After a brief instruction, you hop on the quad to explore the eastern part of Curacao. You’ll go off the beaten path and zoom through deserted landscapes towards the coast. It takes a bit of getting used to at first, especially if, like us, you’ve never been on a quad before. Fortunately, it’s not difficult, and soon you’ll be drifting through corners past giant cacti without any fear. An adrenaline rush is guaranteed! You can book this tour here, and it’s advisable to do so before your trip.

Please note: when booking, you can choose different options. You can opt to rent a quad for 1 person or a quad for 2 people. If both of you want your own quad, you’ll need to make two separate bookings for a quad for 1 person.

Explore colorful Willemstad

Willemstad is the capital of Curacao, and you’re sure to spend an afternoon wandering around here. You’ll find many buildings with typical Dutch architecture but with a cheerful splash of color. The best of both worlds come together here. Stroll through the colorful neighborhoods of Otrobanda and Pietermaai to discover famous hotspots and photo locations. Head to the Handelskade via the Queen Emma Bridge, also known as the pontoon bridge. Want to know what else there is to do in Willemstad or where to find the coolest hotspots? Check out our tips for Willemstad.

Snorkeling with Tropical Fish and Turtles

The waters around Curacao are perfect for snorkeling due to their clarity. While the coral may not be as impressive, you’ll find many unique fish, and with a bit of luck, you might even encounter turtles. If you’re eager to explore more coral, consider going diving as well. Either way, it’s delightful to alternate between lounging on the beach and snorkeling. So, be sure to bring your own diving mask, snorkel, and fins! We’ve explored the well-known snorkeling spots and found these three places to be the most beautiful:

  • Tugboat: Here, a shipwreck lies just five meters (26 feet) deep.
  • Playa Lagun: A charming small beach with a beautiful shallow reef on the left.
  • Avila Beach Hotel: To our surprise, the most beautiful snorkeling spot was the house reef of our hotel. Swim out to the right bay and immediately turn left. Here, you’ll find an extensive reef teeming with colorful coral and a variety of fish. If you’re not staying here, you can buy a day pass for $9. Staying here is definitely recommended as well! We captured the photo below there.

Diving around Curacao

If you want to explore the underwater world thoroughly, diving is undoubtedly the best option. There are nearly 100 dive sites and dozens of dive schools. You can dive here as a beginner, but there are also plenty of challenging dives for experienced divers. The waters around Curacao offer something special for every skill level.

Visit Curacao’s Most Beautiful Beaches

Are you coming to Curacao for stunning white sandy beaches with crystal-clear blue waters? Then, this Caribbean island will not disappoint you. We’ve visited many paradise countries, but nowhere was the water as crystal clear and bright blue as here. Curacao boasts a total of 37 beaches to choose from, so if you like, you can relax on a different beach every day. Some beaches are free to access, while others may require a small entrance fee. Below, we recommend the five most beautiful beaches in Curacao, although they can get quite crowded since everyone wants to enjoy these stunning spots. However, if you go early, you can avoid the crowds:

  • Cas Abou / Bon Bini Beach (entrance fee)
  • Playa Porto Mari (entrance fee)
  • Playa Lagun (free access)
  • Grote Knip (free access)
  • Kleine Knip (free access)

Explore the Rugged Coastline of Shete Boka

In addition to Christoffel Park, Curacao is home to another national park called Shete Boka. This park features seven inlets along the coastline where the sea is often very rough. You can take various hikes, but there’s little to no shade, so they’ve made the three most popular attractions accessible by car. You may need to walk a few minutes at one particular spot. The most spectacular attraction is Boka Pistol. Here, the water crashes forcefully into a narrowing of the inlet, causing it to shoot feet high into the air. It’s a remarkable natural spectacle and a refreshing shower if you get too close. The other two spots are Boka Tabla and Boka Wandome. Boka Tabla is a cave you can climb into, and Boka Wandome is a natural rock bridge over the sea.

Watch the Sunset at Santa Martha Bay Lookout

If you’ve spent a day in the western part of Curacao and are heading back to the east around sunset, make a stop at Santa Martha Bay Lookout. From here, you can enjoy a view of Santa Martha Bay, making it a lovely spot to watch the sunset. Bring some snacks and enjoy the view! If you feel like having a nice meal before heading back, Landhuis Klein Santa Martha is recommended.

Take a Day Trip to Klein Curacao

Klein Curacao is an uninhabited island located about an hour’s boat ride southeast of Curacao. The island is made up of hard rock as it used to be a coral reef. Due to the hard substrate, very little grows here, making it an unusually barren island. However, it boasts a fantastic pearly white sandy beach and crystal-clear blue water, as you would expect on Curacao. While the boat sails, you can sunbathe, and once you arrive at Klein Curacao, you can take a refreshing dip in the water. On the island, you’ll find an abandoned pink lighthouse that you can climb, and a bit further, there are several large and small shipwrecks. This enjoyable boat trip to Klein Curacao lasts the entire day and includes drinks (including alcoholic beverages), a BBQ, snacks, and snorkeling gear if you don’t have your own.

Tip: During this crossing, some people may experience seasickness. Therefore, it’s a good idea to take a motion sickness pill beforehand or use wristbands if you tend to get seasick on boats.

Visit the Kura Hulanda Museum

A visit to the Kura Hulanda Museum is a must. In this impressive museum, you’ll learn about the slave trade and the terrible events that are not so distant in our history. From capturing slaves in Africa and shipping them to their resettlement in the New World, the museum covers the entire journey. It’s a very moving museum located precisely where Dutch entrepreneurs used to trade and ship enslaved Africans.

Swim in the Tomasito Cave

Just around the corner from Playa Kalki, you’ll find the hidden Tomasito Cave. You can descend into the small cave through a steep staircase, where a tiny natural pool has formed at the back. It’s a delightful place to cool off, and when the sun shines on it, the water turns bright blue. To reach this spot, park your car at Kura Hulanda Lodge and pay the 5 guilders entrance fee for the cave. From the reception, it’s a minute’s walk until you see a sign on your left. Go early to have this unique place to yourself.

Update: Unfortunately, Kura Hulanda Lodge is closed, and it’s no longer possible to visit the cave. If you have seen or heard that it’s open again, please let us know via Instagram so we can update this information.

Relax at the Many Beach Bars

A day at a beach bar is a must on this list. Curacao has beach bars of all kinds and sizes. At Mambo Beach, you’ll find many of them, with Chill Beach Bar and Grill and Cabana being our two favorites. Additionally, there are some excellent beach bars at Jan Thiel, such as Koko’s. In the evening, you can also enjoy nightlife at Zanzibar. Finally, we want to mention Karakter because the food here is really excellent.

Nightlife on Curacao

A night of dancing is a must during your vacation on Curacao! To make it easy for you, there’s a party agenda so you know where to go each day of the week. The party agenda looks like this:

  • Monday: Rest day
  • Tuesday: Bar P Curacao – Mr. Porter
  • Wednesday: Madero Ocean Club – Cabana Beach Club
  • Thursday: Bar P
  • Friday: Bonita Beach Club – Madero Ocean Club – Wet & Wild Beach Club – Chill
  • Saturday: Zanzibar
  • Sunday: Wet & Wild Beach Club – Chill

Spot Flamingos and Other Colorful Birds

On Curacao, you’ll come across colorful birds everywhere, such as the hummingbird, canary, troupial, and bananaquit, but the most extraordinary is undoubtedly the flamingo. Flamingos are naturally white, but they turn bright pink when they consume enough algae and small crustaceans. They are not always present, but sometimes you can find them in large groups in the lakes on Curacao. There are three places where you have a good chance of spotting them: this location near Sint Willibrordus, this location at Sint Michiel Baai, and at the salt pans of Jan Thiel. For the latter spot, you can park here and then walk down. You can spot them all day long, but in the early morning, you have the best chance of seeing large groups.

Enjoy Delicious Food or Drinks at the Many Hotspots

Curacao offers a plethora of culinary and cozy hotspots. Whether you want to enjoy a cocktail at a lively beach bar with live music, have tapas with a good glass of wine, or prefer fresh fish at a local eatery, Curacao has it all. If you plan to dine at popular restaurants, it’s a good idea to make a reservation. Also, be aware that some restaurants are only open on specific days of the week, with some open only on weekends and others on weekdays. Check this in advance to avoid disappointment. The following places are highly recommended:

  • Caña: Fantastic food, excellent service, and delicious cocktails
  • Mundo Bizarro: Cocktails, live music, and dancing
  • De Visserij: Undoubtedly the best fish on Curacao
  • Hofi Cas Cora: Healthy dishes from their own farm
  • Maira’s Kitchen: Delicious and affordable lunch in Otrabanda
  • Number Ten: Wonderful place for lunch or breakfast in a beautiful garden
  • BijBlauw: Relaxed ambiance, a great menu, and right by the sea
  • Nultwintig: Sister restaurant of the Michelin-starred restaurant 212 in Amsterdam

Extra Tip: Stay in a Boutique Hotel

A good hotel is key to a fantastic vacation. Curacao has no shortage of excellent hotels, but most of them are a bit on the larger side. Are you looking for something special? Check out our recommendations for the 5 most beautiful boutique hotels on Curacao. Here, you’ll have a fantastic time, whether you stay for the entire vacation or just a few nights.

Next to Aruba and Bonaire lies the tropical paradise of Curacao. Despite the considerable distance, Curacao remains a highly sought-after vacation destination among Dutch travelers. It’s the ultimate place to relax. A vacation in Curacao entails floating in crystal-clear waters, sipping cocktails beneath swaying palm trees, exploring the island’s beautiful spots, and occasionally engaging in exciting activities. Doesn’t that sound enticing? But before you rush to book your flight, take a moment to read these 10 practical tips to make the most out of your vacation in Curacao!

#1 Always Check Opening Hours in Advance

Both restaurants and attractions are often closed on certain days of the week. In fact, some restaurants are open only four days a week, and specific attractions close their doors early in the afternoon. Therefore, it’s advisable to Google the opening hours beforehand whenever you plan to visit a place or dine out.

#2 You Can Drink Tap Water in Curacao

As the heading suggests, tap water in Curacao is perfectly safe to drink. So, bring your own reusable water bottle and fill it up with tap water. This not only saves you money but also benefits the environment by reducing the need for plastic bottles. If you don’t have a reusable bottle yet, consider Dopper’s bottles, which are highly recommended. Opt for a metal one to keep your water cold – particularly suitable for Curacao. Moreover, these metal bottles are of excellent quality and can last for years.

#3 You Can Easily Plan Your Curacao Vacation Yourself

If you don’t have much travel experience, you might be accustomed to booking your vacations as package deals, where flights and accommodations are bundled together through a travel agency. While this can be convenient, planning your trip independently can be more enjoyable and cost-effective. It’s also quite straightforward! You’ll have more flexibility in your choices, such as staying in two different hotels. For instance, we spent the first few days in an authentic country house transformed into a small-scale hotel and then moved to a more luxurious beachfront hotel.

#4 Don’t Forget to Pack Mosquito Repellent

When visiting Curacao, mosquito repellent is a must-have item on your packing list. In addition to mosquitoes, you may encounter plenty of pesky flies on Curacao, especially around sunrise and sunset. We were covered in bites on our first day when we hadn’t applied mosquito repellent. So, make sure to apply it when you notice them biting! By the way, this isn’t a sponsored advertisement for Etos, but the repellents from Etos or Kruidvat house brand are much more affordable than all the top brands and work just as effectively. Pay attention to the percentage of DEET, with a minimum of 40% DEET being a good choice for mosquito repellent.

#5 Everything Moves a Bit Slower in Curacao

Upon arriving in Curacao, you’ll immediately notice the chill vibes. Life on Curacao moves at a much more relaxed pace, which is delightful! Try to adapt to this relaxed mindset and don’t get irritated if, for example, you have to wait a bit longer for the menu than you’re used to. Time has a whole different meaning here.

#6 Bring a Universal Adapter on Your Vacation

Don’t forget to pack a universal adapter for your trip to Curacao. Officially, Curacao uses American-style outlets. Therefore, it’s wise to bring a universal adapter so you can always charge your phone and other devices no matter where you are.

#7 Renting a Car is Ideal in Curacao

When you’re in Curacao, you’ll want to explore the most beautiful beaches, visit hotspots, and engage in fun activities. There are very few taxis on the island, and public transportation is limited. That’s why renting a car is essential if you want to see anything beyond your accommodation. Fortunately, driving on the island is quite easy. Traffic is not chaotic and the road signs are very simple to understand. Read our comprehensive article about renting and driving a car in Curacao.

#8 Download the Curacao Map in Advance

In Curacao, you don’t have access to free mobile data like in the EU unless you purchase a local SIM card. It’s smart to download the Curacao map on Google Maps so you can navigate offline anytime. This comes in handy when you need to find a supermarket, refuel, or locate a specific restaurant. Most hotels and restaurants offer reliable Wi-Fi.

#9 Plan What You Want to Do in Advance

Curacao is not a large island. You can drive from the east to the west in just over an hour. However, it’s still a good idea to decide what you want to do and where it’s located on the island. If you plan to visit multiple attractions in the west, schedule them on the same days to avoid unnecessary trips across the island. Want to know what there is to do? Check out our selection of the 15 most enjoyable things to do in Curacao.

#10 Bring Your Own Snorkeling Gear

The waters around Curacao are usually crystal clear, making it perfect for exploring the underwater world. There are many different types of fish and a good chance you’ll spot a turtle swimming by sooner or later. Having your own snorkeling gear in Curacao is fantastic. It allows you to jump into the water for a snorkeling adventure anytime you want. You can get one for around $7, but the slightly more expensive ones are more comfortable. If you plan to do a lot of snorkeling, it’s better to invest in a slightly more expensive set.

Tip: If you’ve bought a diving mask, briefly hold a lighter under the glass on the inside. Move the flame quickly up and down over the entire glass, being careful not to melt the rubber. This is done to remove the silicone layer. New diving masks require this step, or else they will fog up immediately underwater. You can also buy an anti-fog spray, which also helps prevent fogging. A little spit can also help, but it’s slightly less effective than the spray. If you want to snorkel with ease, consider getting snorkeling fins; they make swimming easier with less effort, especially when there’s some current.

Important: Never touch anything underwater! Coral dies when touched, and a lot of coral has already perished in recent decades, so let’s protect it. Also, avoid touching turtles or other marine animals, even if they come close. Most marine life has very thin and delicate skin, and our contact can harm or make them sick.

Willemstad is the capital of Curacao and covers about 1/4 of the entire island. It’s quite a sizable city with approximately 140,000 residents, yet it still exudes a relaxed atmosphere. During your vacation, you’ll likely explore only a small part of Willemstad around the neighborhoods of Punda, Pietermaai, Otrabanda, and Sharloo. These neighborhoods constitute the center of Willemstad, where you’ll find most hotels, restaurants, and attractions. Apart from the beach, there aren’t many things to do, so one day should suffice to explore the center of Willemstad.

Taste Curacao’s Cuisine at Plasa Bieu

If you want to experience the local cuisine of Curacao, you must visit Plasa Bieu. Here, you won’t find a trendy restaurant with a fancy interior; instead, you’ll find simple tables and various small kitchens serving a variety of local delicacies. You can get a bit of everything, but to help you understand the menu better, here are three dishes we recommend. Firstly, there are stobas, which are stews made from various meats and/or vegetables, usually served with rice, potatoes, or funchi, a type of cornmeal dish that’s popular in the Antilles. Another traditional dish is giuambo, a fish and okra soup (no, not orca, but a type of vegetable). Lastly, you can also try kadushi, a soup made from the local cactus, with a unique flavor and a somewhat slimy texture. In short, there are plenty of new flavors to discover during lunch in Willemstad!

Opening Hours: Monday through Saturday from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM

Enjoy Cocktails on Nieuwestraat in Pietermaai

You’ll find coziness in several places in Willemstad, but for a nice meal followed by a cocktail evening, we recommend Nieuwestraat in the Pietermaai district. Here, you’ll find various bars and restaurants clustered together, allowing you to hop from one to the next. The street is adorned with fairy lights, and the houses are painted in different cheerful colors. Near the end of the street, you’ll find Mundo Bizarro, a Cuban spot where you can dance to live music every Saturday from 9:30 PM onwards. Other great bars include Roast Cannibal Rumbar and Mr. Porter. If you’re looking for a fantastic dining experience in Pietermaai, make a reservation at Caña. It’s our favorite restaurant in Curacao, but be sure to book ahead!

Extra Tip: If you want to take a nice photo with the typical colored houses, this well-known location in Pietermaai is perfect.

Wander Through the Colorful Neighborhoods of Otrabanda and Sharloo

The Otrabanda and Sharloo neighborhoods are located around the center of Willemstad and used to be not very safe, but they have undergone a transformation. Sharloo isn’t as far along as Otrabanda in this process, but various local projects are making progress. Both neighborhoods are very colorful and feature lots of street art. You can explore beautiful spots on your own, like the ‘Colorful stairs Otrabanda‘ and ‘Street Art Skalo‘ but if you want to learn more about the neighborhoods, their history, and the locals, it’s recommended to book a tour with Dushi Walks. This 2-hour walk will take you to places that tourists don’t usually visit and give you a better understanding of Curacao. The cost is 35 guilders ($20) per person.

Tip: For a nice lunch in Otrabanda, visit Maira’s Kitchen.

Stroll Across the Floating Bridge

The Handelskade and the floating bridge are perhaps the two most iconic attractions in Willemstad. The floating bridge, officially named the Koningin Emmabrug, is unique because it can swing open entirely when a boat needs to pass through. This is why the bridge also has a third name: the swinging old lady. If you’re lucky, you’ll be there when a large cruise ship sails through. A bell rings, and then you have a short time to leave the bridge. You can also stay on it, but with a big ship, you might end up waiting on the bridge for half an hour to three-quarters of an hour..

Stroll Along the Handelskade

From the floating bridge, you have a view of the Handelskade on the Sint Annabaai. The canal houses here are typical Dutch warehouses but adorned with the vibrant colors of the Caribbean islands. Unfortunately, the history of this place is less cheerful than its current appearance. This is where European ships used to arrive to load and unload their goods and slaves. It may be hard to imagine now, but this was once the epicenter of the slave trade. Enslaved Africans were sold here to other countries on the American continent. That’s if they had survived the horrific conditions during the boat journey, as on average, 30% of the slaves died during the voyage.

Visit the Impressive Kura Hulanda Museum

If you’re interested in the entire history of the slave trade, then walk over to the Kura Hulanda Museum, just around the corner from the floating bridge. This museum tells the whole story of the slave trade and houses an impressive collection of African art. It may not leave you feeling very cheerful, but you really shouldn’t leave Curacao without visiting this place.

Opening Hours: Monday through Saturday from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM

Relax at Mambo Beach in Willemstad

We’ll conclude this list with something lighter because you’ve surely come to Curacao to enjoy the sun, sea, and beach. In Willemstad, you can find that at Mambo Beach. Here, you can relax on a beach chair at a beach bar like Cabana or Chill Beach Bar and Grill. You’ll be under the palm trees with your feet in the sand and the beautiful blue water in front of you. Let those cocktails come your way!

When you’re in Curacao, you’ll definitely want to explore all the beautiful spots on the island. For that, you’ll need transportation if you don’t want to rely on expensive tours. Unfortunately, public transportation is quite limited on Curacao, there are few taxis, and the ones available can be quite pricey. That’s why renting a car in Curacao is ideal to visit the island’s most beautiful places. Start the engine, play some nice music, and enjoy, with our tips, all the beauty Curacao has to offer.

Is driving safe in Curacao?

The answer to this question is a resounding yes. Driving in Curacao is definitely safe and quite relaxed. Traffic is not chaotic: other road users don’t drive recklessly, and most roads are in good condition.

What are the roads like in Curacao?

As mentioned above, most roads are in good condition. Especially the main roads are well paved. If you venture off the main roads, you might encounter some rougher terrain and occasional potholes, but it’s still manageable with a regular car. You don’t need a 4×4. When it rains, the roads can be slipperier than what you might be used to, so it’s advisable to keep a bit more distance from the car in front of you.

Because almost everyone in Curacao has a car, and Curacao residents often drive even short distances by car, traffic can sometimes be congested on the major roads in Willemstad. Certain areas may experience traffic jams during rush hours. Try to avoid the Caracasbaaiweg (the road between Willemstad and Jan Thiel) during rush hours.

Traffic Rules in Curacao

  • In Curacao, they drive on the right side of the road, and you must overtake on the left. On roads with separated lanes and two or more lanes per direction, overtaking on the right is allowed.
  • At an intersection, traffic from the right has the right of way unless indicated otherwise by a traffic sign or yield signs.
  • This rule doesn’t apply at T-intersections. The vehicle on the main road has the right of way. The driver whose road ends must yield.
  • In general, roundabouts in Curacao function normally, but there are exceptions. Some roundabouts have yield signs and priority signs. Pay extra attention when entering such roundabouts because the vehicle already inside the roundabout must yield to the one trying to enter.

What type of car should you rent?

In principle, any rental car is suitable. If you’re traveling as a couple, a small rental car is fine. If you’re with more people, a larger car would be more comfortable, of course. We always rent an automatic car when traveling abroad, even though we can drive manual. Driving abroad can be a bit unfamiliar at first, and an automatic is more convenient in those situations.

Important Tip: Bring Your Credit Card

When picking up the rental car, it’s important to have a credit card in the name of the main driver. This is mandatory for the car rental deposit. Without a credit card in the main driver’s name, you cannot receive the rental car. Make sure there’s enough balance on this credit card to cover the deposit. The deposit amount can vary per car and can be found under the ‘specific conditions’ section. Don’t have a credit card yet? We recommend you to get this credit card.

Additional Info and Tips for Renting a Car

Here are some handy things to keep in mind when renting a car.

Parking in Curacao

Parking your car in Curacao is mostly free everywhere except in some places in downtown Willemstad. Here, you have to pay for parking during the day. Paid parking spots are marked with a number, and if you park in one of these spots, you must pay at a parking meter. The standard rate is 1 guilder per hour. If you don’t mind walking a bit, you can often find free parking a few hundred feet away from the city center where there are no numbered parking spots, and you don’t need to pay.

Refueling in Curacao

There’s one important thing you have to keep in mind when refueling in Curacao. In Curacao, you have to pay before refueling. You park your car at the gas pump, then you go to the cashier and tell them how much money you want to spend on fuel. Around 75 guilders is a good amount if your tank is nearly empty. After paying, you can fill up your car. If you end up refueling for less than the prepaid amount, you’ll receive the difference back at the cashier with your receipt.

Navigation in Curacao

It’s handy to navigate in Curacao using Google Maps. Download the Curacao map in your Google Maps app before your trip, so you can navigate offline. You can use it to find gas stations, supermarkets, attractions, and restaurants without an internet connection.

Minimum Age for Renting a Car

The minimum age requirement varies among car rental companies. In most cases, the minimum age is 21. If you’re between 18 and 21 and still want to rent a car, you may have to pay an additional fee in most cases. You can find the minimum age requirement and other terms in the rental conditions.

International Driver’s License

You do not need an international driver’s license in Curacao.

What does it cost to rent a car on Curacao?

When renting a car in Curacao, prices can vary depending on the season and how early you book. Booking a rental car through Rentalcars.com is highly recommended for Curacao. With a rental car, you always have a chance of damage and problems along the way, which is why it’s smart to book with a reliable party. At Rentalcars, you can always take out a Full Protection Insurance, you can change your booking for free and all conditions are clearly indicated. So you don’t have to worry about snags and if something goes wrong on your trip, everything is always reimbursed and taken care of. This is totally worth it as far as we are concerned, especially on holiday.

Note: Sometimes the local rental company will try to sell you extra insurances. These are absolutely unnecessary as everything is covered with Rentalcars’ Full Protection Insurance. So don’t be fooled because you are 100% covered, even your excess will be refunded in case of damage.

Price hikes due to shortage of cars: There is currently a huge shortage of rental cars worldwide. To survive the corona crisis, car rental companies have had to sell a large portion of their cars. Since demand is rising fast, there are not enough chips for new cars and prices are skyrocketing due to the shortage. As a result, many rental cars are double the price or even fully booked. It’s best to book as early as possible to be sure of a rental car that is still somewhat affordable. At Rentalcars.com, you can currently cancel or change your booking free of charge up to 48 hours in advance, so you are not stuck with anything but still be sure of a rental car.

Climbing the Christoffelberg is a must-do when you visit Curacao, in our opinion. It’s one of the most enjoyable activities on the island, and you can burn off some of those vacation calories right away. A trip to Curacao usually involves lounging on tropical beaches with a cocktail in hand. While we love that too, we were thrilled to discover that you can also be active on Curacao. The Christoffelberg stands at a modest height of 375 meters (1,230 feet), but we promise you’ll find plenty of challenges on the hike up!

How to Get to Christoffelberg?

Christoffelberg is located in Christoffelpark, about 40 kilometers (25 miles) from Willemstad. There are few buses that run between Willemstad and the park, and the ones that do often run late and infrequently. Therefore, renting a car is the better option. At the park entrance, you’ll need to pay an entrance fee, and then you can drive a portion of the way into the park by car. From the entrance, it takes about 5 minutes to reach the parking lot at the base of the mountain, where the hike begins. The road is quite steep with many curves, but it’s manageable with a regular car since the entire road is paved, and there is no oncoming traffic as it’s a one-way road. Here is the location of the Christoffelpark entrance.

Tip: Christoffelpark is situated in the far west of Curacao, about an hour’s drive from Willemstad. So, plan to explore other nearby attractions on the day you go. Here are our tips for the best spots in Curacao.

What’s the Hike to Christoffelberg Like?

Once you’ve parked your car, the hike to the summit of the mountain begins. The route is clearly marked with yellow arrows and dots painted on rocks and trees. The hike to the top takes about an hour to an hour and a half, depending on your fitness level and how many breaks you take. The hike starts relatively flat and becomes progressively steeper. When you’re nearing the top, you’ll need to use your hands and feet occasionally to climb because it gets quite steep. However, it’s manageable for anyone in good physical condition. Once you reach the top, you’re usually rewarded with a refreshing breeze and a 360-degree view of the entire island. On clear days, you can even see the neighboring island of Bonaire.

Christoffelberg Opening Hours

You can only start the climb to the top of Christoffelberg before 10:00 AM. After this time, the entrance closes, and you cannot begin the hike because it becomes too hot. It’s not necessary to leave the park before 10:00 AM; the park opens at 6:00 AM, and we strongly recommend starting the hike around that time. It’s cooler, and you can hike up during sunrise, which makes the view even more stunning!

Note: On official holidays, such as Christmas, the park may be closed.

Flora and Fauna

While hiking upward, make sure to watch your step, but also take a moment to look around. The natural beauty here is remarkable. Along the winding path, you’ll find numerous cacti, some towering meters high and others quite tiny. Keep your eyes and ears open for beautiful birds like hummingbirds and sugar thieves.

What to Bring?

  • Closed-toe shoes
  • Insect repellent
  • Ample water (at least 1 liter per person)
  • A small snack
  • Sunscreen
  • Backpack

Most hotels in Curacao are large resorts, but Curacao also has some beautiful boutique hotels. While a resort can be wonderful at times, it can sometimes feel crowded and impersonal. In a boutique hotel, you get a more unique experience and a more intimate atmosphere. A resort and a boutique hotel can also be easily combined if you can’t decide. For example, stay in a cozy boutique hotel for the first few nights and then at a beachfront resort for the last few nights. That way, you can have the best of both worlds. We’ve searched for the most beautiful boutique hotels in Curacao and found five delightful options for a special stay on the island.

If there’s one thing all the Caribbean islands have in common, it’s the abundance of paradisiacal beaches. Here, you can relax under swaying palm trees, order a cocktail, and enjoy the sun with your toes in the sand. On a sunny day, the white powdery sand will dazzle your eyes, and the water is so crystal clear that you can see the fish swimming from the shore. While you’ll undoubtedly end up at the extremely touristy beaches of Jan Thiel Beach and Mambo Beach, Curacao has even more delightful beaches that you’ll definitely want to visit. So, beach hopping is a must in Curacao!

Tip: If Jan Thiel Beach and Mambo Beach don’t ring a bell, these beaches are where you’ll find most of the hotels, restaurants, and shops. The beaches are filled with sunbeds, and it’s always lively. Perfect for a day of relaxation or dancing in the evening, but they are much more crowded than the beaches on this list.

Playa Lagun: a wonderfully intimate beach

One of the most beautiful beaches in Curacao is also one of the smallest on the island. The tiny Playa Lagun is nestled in a bay that’s no wider than about 30 meters (98 feet). Don’t forget to bring your snorkeling gear, especially to the left near the rocks, as the underwater world is fantastic. With a bit of luck, you may even encounter turtles here. Tropical fish and corals are always there to be found. Colorful boats dot the beach, and between January and July, the bushes and trees on the rocks create a green oasis. If you feel like eating or drinking, take the stairs up to the right of the bay to Bahia Beach Bar. From here, you’ll have a fantastic view of one of the most beautiful beaches in Curacao.

Grote Knip: the most photographed beach

If you’ve never been to Curacao before, this beach is probably the image that comes to mind when you think of Curacao. That’s because this is the most photographed beach, often used for advertising posters and travel organization brochures. And it’s not surprising because the turquoise water and the pristine white beach perfectly complement the green hills behind it. On the left side of the beach, there’s a viewpoint from where you can take the famous photo. Below, you can climb over the rocks, and if you’re brave enough, you can even cliff jump from various heights. The right side of the bay is also beautiful due to the rock wall covered with tall cacti.

Tip: If you want to have the most beautiful beaches mostly to yourself, try to avoid the weekend and go early in the morning. With a jetlag, getting up early in the first few days is also very easy.

Kleine Knip: the less crowded sibling

Just around the corner from Grote Knip, you’ll find Kleine Knip, and as the name suggests, this beach is the smaller sibling and feels a bit cozier. It’s also less known, making it often quieter. You can rent a sunbed with an umbrella, but there are no other facilities. Occasionally, someone comes by selling drinks or fruit, but it’s a good idea to bring your own snacks and drinks.

Cas Abou / Bon Bini Beach: a true paradise beach

Cas Abou, also known as Bon Bini Beach, is a delightful beach with swaying palm trees and calm waters. The most beautiful spot is all the way to the right by the rock that seems to float above the water. At Cas Abou, you can rent a sunbed, have a meal, get a massage, or even go diving since there’s a dive school on the beach. You won’t get bored on this paradise-like piece of earth!

Porto Mari: a beach with pigs

Porto Mari Beach, with its many amenities, is somewhat similar to Cas Abou but a bit larger. What makes this beach special is that there is a family of sturdy pigs roaming around. They often lounge in the mud pool near the parking lot, but occasionally, they take a refreshing dip in the azure blue water. Here too, you can combine a beach day with diving. There’s an observation tower in the parking lot from which you can take a beautiful photo of the entire bay.

Klein Curacao: the perfect beach day

If you’re going to Curacao, a day trip to Klein Curacao is a must. This uninhabited island is an hour’s boat ride from Curacao and boasts a beach with stunning white powder-like sand. As soon as the boat approaches the extremely blue water surrounding the island, you’ll want to jump right in. You can snorkel, relax on the boat, climb the abandoned lighthouse, check out the washed-up shipwrecks, and of course, get a tan on the idyllic beach. This boat trip is all-inclusive, so lunch, snacks, snorkeling gear, and all drinks are included in the price. Yes, even alcoholic drinks! This is the perfect day trip to completely unwind. We did this on the first full day after arriving in Curacao, and it was perfect to start off right without having to do much. You can book this tour here, and it’s recommended to do so well in advance of your departure to Curacao.

Tip: During this crossing, some people tend to get seasick. Therefore, it’s a good idea to take a motion sickness pill in advance or use wristbands if you tend to get seasick on boats.

If you’re planning a vacation to Curacao, you might be wondering where the best place to stay is. The answer to that question depends on what you’re looking for. Do you want to stay right on the beach, near the nightlife, close to good restaurants, or prefer a quieter getaway? Most hotels and restaurants are concentrated around the Pietermaai district in Willemstad and the two popular beach areas, Jan Thiel Bay and Mambo Beach. The vast majority of people stay in one of these three areas. If you prefer a quieter experience, there are also lovely hotels further to the west of Curacao. Below, you’ll find information about the differences between these places to help you make an informed choice.

Staying in the colorful Pietermaai in Willemstad

In the heart of Willemstad, you’ll find the trendy neighborhood of Pietermaai. Expect not the hustle and bustle but rather a very relaxed and authentic area with colorful mansions, the occasional cozy bar, and many excellent restaurants, all within walking distance! You’ll also find most boutique hotels in Curacao and a few seaside resorts here. From here, you can explore Willemstad on foot, and if you’re looking for more excitement, you can reach Mambo Beach in just 6 minutes by car. If you want to explore the west of Curacao for a day, you’ll quickly reach the main road from here. Pietermaai offers the best of both worlds, making it an excellent base for exploring Curacao.

Our favorite places in Pietermaai: If you prefer to stay directly on the beach and in a prime location in Pietermaai, Avila Beach Hotel is the best choice. We found snorkeling here, just outside the hotel’s bay, absolutely fantastic. They have two private beaches, so the beach is also pleasantly quiet. If you’re looking for a luxurious boutique stay, Villa Tokara is fantastic. This monumental villa has a wonderfully large pool, and in the morning, you’ll be served an extensive breakfast on the terrace.

Staying at the bustling Mambo Beach (Seaquarium Beach)

If you prefer a bit more hustle and bustle, Mambo Beach might be the right choice for you. Actually, the beach here is called Seaquarium Beach, but due to the popular beach club Mambo that used to be here, it is now better known as Mambo Beach. The beach is beautiful with powdery white sand and is filled with palm trees (and beach beds). The crystal-clear blue sea is calm due to the various coves created with large stones. Here, you’ll find many large resorts and beach clubs along a boulevard with shops. During the day, you can enjoy the beach, and in the evening, there’s always a party to be found somewhere. In terms of location, you’re a 15-minute drive from the center of Willemstad, so it’s still relatively central.

Our favorite places at Mambo Beach: Perhaps the most beautiful resort in Curacao is Kontiki Beach Resort. The resort is full of palm trees, and natural materials have been used extensively. There’s a beautiful tropical pool, and you’ll stay in an idyllic bungalow. Another good resort at Mambo Beach is LionsDive. LionsDive is located on a pure white private beach, surrounded by swaying palm trees, and the seawater here is crystal clear blue.

Staying at the vibrant Jan Thiel Beach

Of all these places, Jan Thiel Beach is the easternmost. Just like at Mambo Beach, you’ll find many hotels, restaurants, and beach clubs here. It’s a bit smaller and slightly less crowded than Mambo Beach, but it’s certainly not less busy. If we have to choose between the beaches of Mambo and Jan Thiel, we find Mambo Beach a bit more beautiful because it’s more spacious. You can also dance with your feet in the sand in the evening at Jan Thiel.

Our favorite place at Jan Thiel Beach: At Papagayo Beach Resort, you’ll stay in a spacious bungalow with a veranda and a great view of the sea or the beautifully landscaped garden. There are two pools: one infinity saltwater pool and one freshwater pool. Right behind the resort are the salt pans of Curacao, and you can often spot large groups of flamingos here in the morning.

Note: Mambo Beach and Jan Thiel Beach may seem close to each other, but because the salt pans are in between, you have to take a long detour via the Caracasbaaiweg. This is a total of 8 kilometers (5 miles), but during rush hour, there is often a long queue, and it can take up to 30 minutes for this stretch. So, you are relatively far from the rest of Willemstad, and you should keep this in mind when going somewhere.

Heading more to the west of Curacao

Further to the west, you’ll mainly find small lodges in beautiful natural locations. It’s perfect if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle for a few days and also ideal for exploring more of this side of the island. This way, you won’t have to drive as far each time. In terms of restaurants, you’ll have fewer choices, but that’s balanced by the beautiful locations and authentic experiences.

Our favorite places more to the west of Curacao: West of Willemstad, you’ll find very nice accommodations such as Mondi Lodge. You’ll stay here in idyllic bungalows or treehouses hidden in a beautiful garden full of banana trees and other tropical plants. If you prefer to stay in a luxury resort, Coral Estate Luxury Resort is a top choice. The resort has a large infinity pool overlooking the Caribbean Sea, and there’s Karakter Beach Club at the resort where you can enjoy delicious food and relax.

Tip: Renting a car is recommended when you go to Curacao, but when you stay more to the west, it’s necessary because the restaurants and attractions are not within walking distance.

Where do we prefer to stay?

Of course, you can best determine which place suits your wishes, but if you ask us, we found staying in Pietermaai the most enjoyable. The beach is nearby (sometimes even in front of your hotel) and it’s not too crowded. This area offers the best restaurant options, and you never have to walk far for some fun. But what might be even more fun is to stay in two different places. Of course, you’ll have to move in the middle of your vacation, but it’s also fun to experience two different locations and hotels. Choose, for example, a nice boutique hotel and then a resort for the perfect mix. Above, we’ve already recommended some great places to stay, but if you want to see all our recommendations, read 5x the most beautiful boutique hotels in Curacao or 5x the most beautiful resorts in Curacao.
