Traveling in Nicaragua is a pure delight because here you can still experience the authentic atmosphere of Central America. It’s one of the cheapest and safest countries in the region, and most distances are so short that you never have to travel long to reach the next beautiful destination. That makes Nicaragua an ideal travel destination that many people combine with Guatemala or Costa Rica. In this article, we share our itinerary for Nicaragua, allowing you to visit the country’s most beautiful places. For each destination on the route, we’ve written a separate article with tips for the most enjoyable activities, great restaurants, and comfortable accommodations. This way, you can easily create your own itinerary for Nicaragua and get a good sense of what each destination has to offer. Welcome to Nicaragua!

Why Choose a Journey through Nicaragua?

Nicaragua is the land of colorful colonial cities, lakes, and gigantic volcanoes. It’s no wonder that this destination is rapidly gaining popularity among travelers who want to experience the real Central America without breaking the bank. It’s wonderfully authentic, the local population is incredibly friendly and makes you feel welcome in their country. The colonial cities exude atmosphere, and if you seek nature, you’ll come across the most beautiful landscapes. You’ll almost stumble upon volcanoes; there are as many as 19 of them! Traveling in Nicaragua is incredibly diverse and the perfect destination for anyone who’s up for a bit of adventure. You certainly don’t need to book an organized tour because Nicaragua is extremely easy and enjoyable to explore on your own.

Transportation for this Nicaragua Itinerary

Almost all destinations in Nicaragua are close to each other, making it easy to travel around the country by local bus. Throughout Nicaragua, you’ll find so-called chicken buses. These are old American school buses painted in all sorts of vibrant colors. They got their nickname because locals often bring chickens on the bus. These old buses aren’t very comfortable, but since you often only have to travel for one or two hours, it’s manageable. Plus, it’s a fun experience and costs you almost nothing. For a two-hour ride, you’ll pay about $3. In addition to chicken buses, there are also local minivans that run between many destinations. These are slightly more expensive but offer more comfort.

How Many Weeks Do You Need for This Nicaragua Itinerary?

If you want to leisurely enjoy all the beautiful destinations in Nicaragua, you’ll need a little over three weeks for this itinerary. If you have less time, you can easily complete this route in just under two weeks if you skip Little Corn Island. Most likely, you’ll fly to the capital, Managua. Many travelers visit Nicaragua during a longer journey through Central America. You can take a bus from Guatemala to Leon or from Costa Rica to San Juan del Sur. The direction of your route depends on which destination you enter the country from.

Managua

When you fly to Nicaragua, your journey starts in the capital, Managua. This isn’t a place where you’ll want to linger for long because there isn’t much to do. Since you probably don’t want to hop on a bus immediately after your long flight, it’s wise to book accommodation for the first night. La Bicicleta is a lovely accommodation, and we recommend reserving your first night there after booking your flight. In the beautiful garden, you’ll experience an oasis of calm and won’t feel like you’re in a busy city. Additionally, it’s located in a quiet neighborhood near the bus station, which is convenient if you continue your journey the next day!

Leon

Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a thrill-seeker, or an architecture lover, the charming city of Leon has something to offer for every type of traveler. The most popular activity in Leon is volcano boarding, where you slide down a volcano at high speed on a board (about 1 mile). Guaranteed adrenaline rush! If you’re a bit less adventurous, there are plenty of other enjoyable things to do in Leon. Explore the beautiful colonial center, learn about the history during the free walking tour, and walk on the roof of the impressive Cathedral of Leon. In this city, you’ll immerse yourself in the rich culture and traditions of Nicaragua. Check out all the tips for Leon to see what else there is to do.

Travel time from Managua to Leon: 2 to 3 hours by bus (about 1 mile)

Granada

Granada is the oldest city in Nicaragua and loved by many for its well-preserved colonial architecture, vibrant culture, and cozy atmosphere. Everywhere you look, you’ll see buildings in all the colors of the rainbow, and there are countless cozy restaurants, cafes, and bars. In addition to cultural sights, Granada also serves as a gateway to some of the most beautiful landscapes in Nicaragua, including the islands around Isletas de Granada. Here, you can go kayaking and have a good chance of spotting wildlife. The nearby Masaya volcano is also a must-see in Granada. You can get so close to this volcano that you can see the lava bubbling in the crater. Moreover, there are many more fun things to do in Granada to add to your Nicaragua itinerary.

Travel time from Leon to Granada: Approximately 4 hours by bus (about 2.5 miles)

Isla de Ometepe

The island of Isla de Ometepe is located in the middle of Lake Nicaragua and was formed by two volcanoes that grew together. Life on Isla de Ometepe is wonderfully uncomplicated, and everything moves a bit slower there. Hop on a bike or scooter and explore the most beautiful spots on this unique island. Climb one of the tallest waterfalls in Nicaragua or rent a kayak and search for caimans, monkeys, and tropical birds during the sunset. Isla de Ometepe is a destination that should not be missing from your Nicaragua itinerary. Check out our tips for Isla de Ometepe to get a good sense of the island.

Travel time from Granada to Isla de Ometepe: 2.5 to 3.5 hours by bus and boat (about 1.5 miles)

San Juan del Sur

This small town on the Pacific Ocean is for anyone who loves beach lounging, surfing, and fun parties. Every Sunday is Sunday Funday, and the biggest pool party in Central America takes place. Just outside the town, you’ll find some unique hostels and hotels nestled in nature. Here, you’ll wake up to the sounds of tropical birds, and with a bit of luck, you might see monkeys swinging by from your hammock. Curious where you can find these special accommodations? Check out the tips for San Juan del Sur.

Travel time from Isla Ometepe to San Juan del Sur: 1 hour by boat and then 45 minutes by bus (about 3 miles)

Little Corn Island

Nicaragua isn’t necessarily known for its beautiful beaches, but there’s one destination where you can find them. Little Corn Island is located about 70 km (43 miles) off the Caribbean coast and is a tropical paradise. Nowhere else in Nicaragua will you find such beautiful beaches and blue waters. The untouched island has a laid-back culture, and you’ll almost feel like you’re in a place like Jamaica. It’s not very big, as it’s only 3 kilometers long and 1.5 kilometers wide (about 2 miles by 1 mile).

It will take you some time and money to get there because you first need to fly to Big Corn Island and then take a boat to its smaller sibling. A cheaper option is to travel there by bus and boat, but that will take much longer. So, you really need to have the time for it and find it worthwhile. However, if you love tropical islands, you’re in the right place. The best time to visit Little Corn Island is during the dry season between January and April. For the rest of the year, there’s a high chance of tropical storms, so it’s not recommended. Check out our tips for Little Corn Island to see what there is to do on this tropical island.

Travel time from San Juan del Sur to Little Corn Island: 2.5 hours by bus to Managua, and from Managua, it’s a 1-hour flight to Big Corn Island. From there, you can take a boat to Little Corn Island.

Traveling in Nicaragua is a treat for adventurers. In this second-largest country in Central America, you can find 19 volcanoes, and life there is still very authentic. Nicaragua can’t be compared to any other country in Central America. During a trip through Nicaragua, you’ll visit beautiful colonial cities, enjoy idyllic islands, and engage in exciting outdoor activities. Before you travel to Nicaragua, read these 9 practical tips and insights to ensure you’re well-prepared for your journey.

#1 The Best Time to Visit Nicaragua

Nicaragua has two seasons: the rainy season and the dry season. The rainy season runs from May to October, with October being particularly wet. During the rainy season, there can be heavy rainfall, but it’s often in the form of short, intense showers, with the sun peeking through. One advantage of the rainy season is that the landscape is much greener. If you want the best chance of clear skies during your trip, opt for the dry season from November to April. However, it’s best to avoid April, which is the hottest month of the year.

#2 Nicaragua is Still Very Authentic

In Nicaragua, it sometimes feels like time has stood still. This results in beautiful scenery and an authentic travel experience. In rural areas, you’ll see men riding horses with cowboy hats and boots, and on local markets, you’ll find women wearing colorful traditional clothing. The country is less developed than many neighboring countries and can greatly benefit from tourism income. You are more than welcome in hospitable and authentic Nicaragua.

#3 Traveling in Nicaragua is Budget-Friendly

In addition to being very authentic, Nicaragua is also a budget-friendly destination. It’s the cheapest country in Central America, making it a popular choice for backpackers. Most hostels and hotels are incredibly affordable, especially when compared to other Central American countries. A bed in a dormitory typically costs around $10 per night, and a double room ranges from $20 to $30. Food in Nicaragua doesn’t have to break the bank either. Eating at street food stalls or local restaurants will set you back an average of $5 for a meal. Read more about the costs in Nicaragua.

However, the flip side of this coin is that much of the local population is very poor. Especially when crossing the border from Costa Rica to Nicaragua, you’ll notice the difference. The country is more outdated, polluted, and there are many more homeless people and beggars on the streets.

#4 How Money and Payments Work

You can use both the US dollar and the Nicaraguan córdoba for payment in Nicaragua. Although both currencies are often listed on the bill, it’s best to pay with córdobas. You can easily withdraw money from ATMs. Some ATMs only allow you to withdraw money with a credit card, but at Banpro banks, you can also withdraw cash with your Maestro debit card.

When you ask for the bill at a restaurant, you’ll often see an optional 10% tip already included. If you don’t mention it, you’ll automatically pay it. If you weren’t satisfied with the food or have another reason not to pay the tip, you should let them know, and they will remove it.

Tip: When asking for a price or negotiating, it’s better to use the word “peso” instead of “córdoba.” This old term is still commonly used by the local population.

#5 Tips for Transportation in Nicaragua

The distances between popular destinations in Nicaragua are not very large, making it convenient to travel by local buses. These so-called chicken buses are old American school buses that have been customized with various colors, horns, and decorations. They operate throughout the country and are very affordable. A ride of a few hours will cost you just a few dollars, making bus travel in Nicaragua extremely budget-friendly. While not all bus stops are well-defined, you can quickly figure out where to catch the bus by asking around. Keep in mind that there are often fewer buses running on Sundays. You can find detailed information on how to travel between destinations in our articles on Nicaragua destinations.

Little Corn Island is the only destination that is a bit more remote. It’s a beautiful tropical island off the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua. To get there, you’ll have to cover some distance. You can find information on how to get there in our article with tips for Little Corn Island.

Tip: Keep in mind that buses can sometimes get very crowded, and your backpack may occasionally be tied to the roof of the bus. Therefore, put your valuable items in your daypack and keep it with you at all times.

#6 Traveling In and Out of Nicaragua by Land

When crossing the border into Nicaragua by land, you must pay an entrance fee of $15. This must be in cash and in exact change. When leaving Nicaragua, you’ll pay a $3 exit fee. If you’re traveling from Costa Rica, you’ll also pay an exit fee of $9 on the Costa Rican side. There are no ATMs at the border crossings, so make sure you have enough dollars with you. Also, keep all the documents you receive during immigration. Sometimes they may ask for them again when you exit Nicaragua.

Tip: Nicaragua has strict customs policies. For example, it’s not allowed to bring binoculars or drones. They will check your luggage, and if they find any of these items, they will confiscate them.

#7 Safety in Nicaragua

Nicaragua is safe for travel. Travel to Nicaragua was discouraged in 2018 due to political tensions and violent protests. Fortunately, this is now over, and a positive travel advisory is in place. The local population of Nicaragua is very friendly, and it’s easy and safe to travel even as a solo female traveler. Of course, things can happen anywhere and anytime, but this applies to all travel destinations.

#8 Nicaragua Pairs Well with Costa Rica or Guatemala

Many travelers choose to combine Nicaragua with either Costa Rica or Guatemala. By combining these countries, you can create a diverse journey filled with various cultures, natural wonders, and activities. Each of these nations offers a unique experience, constantly stimulating your senses. You can easily cross the border by bus. The bus journey to or from Guatemala takes a bit longer as you have to traverse all of Honduras. In total, the bus ride lasts about 18 hours. If you’re traveling from Costa Rica to Nicaragua, it will take considerably less time.

#9 The Ultimate Nicaragua Travel Itinerary

Having visited Nicaragua multiple times, we’ve leveraged our knowledge and experience to create the ultimate travel itinerary for Nicaragua. This itinerary will take you to colorful colonial cities, lakes, and towering volcanoes, ensuring you get the most out of your trip to Nicaragua! You can complete this itinerary in just under two weeks, making it ideal for those looking to combine it with a visit to Costa Rica or Guatemala.

Leon is historically one of the most intriguing places in Nicaragua, and there’s a lot to talk about. Its full name is ‘Santiago de los Caballeros de León,’ and this former capital was at the heart of the revolution that began in the late 1970s. You can still see many of the political murals scattered throughout the city that reflect this history. Additionally, the city is an intellectual hub and the birthplace of Central America’s first university. Besides all of this, you’ll find an active volcano nearby where you can slide down at high speed on a board. So, there’s plenty to do and discover in Leon! I’ll share my best tips with you.

How to Get to Leon?

Most people travel to Leon from Granada or Managua. Below, you’ll find how to travel from these destinations to Leon.

From Granada to Leon

By Local Bus: For this route, you’ll need to transfer to the capital, Managua. Take the bus from Granada to Managua from Terminal de Buses Granada – Managua (UCA) and then switch to the bus to Leon. The entire journey takes about 4 hours.

From Managua to Leon

By Local Bus: Take a taxi to Terminal UCA (pronounced ooka) and let the driver know you’re going to Leon to ensure they take you to the correct bus station. Here, it’s best to look for a minivan rather than opting for the chicken bus. The price difference is minimal, but you’ll spend much less time. With the minivan, you’ll reach Leon in about 2 hours, while the chicken bus takes around 3 hours.

What to Do in Leon?

Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a foodie, or an adventurer, Leon has something for everyone. Explore the streets of this colorful colonial city, meet friendly locals, and immerse yourself in Nicaragua’s rich culture and traditions.

Learn More About Nicaragua with the Free Walking Tour

The best tip I can give you in Leon is to participate in the Leon Free Walking Tour. This two-hour tour was the most interesting and interactive walking tour I’ve ever done. It’s recommended to do this at the beginning of your stay in Leon because you’ll learn a lot, making it easier to navigate the city afterward. The guides are incredibly enthusiastic and engage you in the story. The English tours are conducted daily at 9 AM and 4 PM. I suggest choosing the morning tour because it includes a fun part where you’ll taste some local treats at the market, and it’s better to do this in the morning as they start cleaning up in the late afternoon. You can reserve the tour for free via the link above.

Tip: It’s a free tour, but it’s highly appreciated to give the guide a tip if you enjoyed the tour. Also, bring some extra small change to sample a few things at the market with the group.

Walk on the Roof of the Cathedral of Leon

The impressive Cathedral of León is another highlight you shouldn’t miss! This grand piece of architecture is the largest cathedral in all of Central America and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The bright white cathedral is well-maintained and regularly repainted to maintain its beautiful appearance. Be sure to purchase a ticket that allows you to go up to the roof. After removing your shoes, you can walk on the roof, which is itself quite photogenic and offers a great view of Leon.

Tip: The roof of the Cathedral of Leon is the perfect place to watch the sunset. Check the current opening hours and the time of the sunset when you’re there, as it may vary slightly depending on the season.

Volcano Boarding on Cerro Negro Volcano

In between all the cultural highlights, you can experience one of the most unique sports on Earth from Leon: volcano boarding! The name pretty much says it all. You slide down the 700-meter (2297-feet) high Cerro Negro volcano on a board, reaching speeds of up to 100 kilometers per hour (62 mph)! Of course, you can control your speed, so don’t worry, this activity is suitable even if you’re not the bravest. For many travelers, this is the reason to visit Leon. Read all the tips for volcano boarding in advance to know what to expect and which organization is recommended.

Alternative to Volcano Boarding: Climb Telica Volcano

If volcano boarding doesn’t appeal to you but you still want to climb a volcano and watch the sunset, consider a 4 to 5-hour hike to the Telica volcano, located 1.5 hours from Leon. This hike takes you to the crater rim of the volcano, where you can watch the sunset and even see lava bubbling in the crater afterward. I didn’t do this hike myself because it’s a bit redundant if you’re also going volcano boarding, but the view is said to be spectacular. You can book the Telica tour here.

Feed the Pigeons at the Central Park in Leon

Now, pigeons may not be exotic animals for most of us, and we probably see them every day. However, I found it quite a spectacle to watch them at the square in front of the Cathedral of Leon! At times, they swarm around the square and the cathedral, and then they all settle down on the square. With the beautiful cathedral in the background, it’s like a living painting. The best part is that you can buy a bag of birdseed from someone on the square to feed the pigeons. The pigeons will catch on quickly, and be warned; they will all flock to you!

Learn About Nicaragua’s History at the Museum of the Revolution

A must during your stay in Leon is the Museum of the Revolution. This is a fascinating museum that takes you on a journey through Nicaragua’s turbulent history. Here, you’ll learn about the Nicaraguan revolution and the struggle for independence. Upon entry, a veteran takes you through the exhibition with photos and historical objects, telling you all about that time. The building where the exhibition is held also played an important role during this period. During this tour, you’ll also go up to the roof, where, from a somewhat rickety corrugated metal path, you’ll be treated to a nice view of the city.

Visit Iglesia de La Recolección

Iglesia de La Recolección is a beautiful historic church that’s definitely worth a visit. The facade is richly decorated with statues and reliefs. The construction of this bright yellow church began in the 18th century and is considered one of the finest examples of Baroque architecture in Nicaragua.

Best Restaurants in Leon

After a morning of sightseeing in Leon, it’s time to treat your taste buds. Here are my favorite restaurants in town.

Mañana Mañana Café – Here you can enjoy delicious coffee, breakfast, and sandwiches all day long.

Our Favorite Places to Stay in Leon

The best tip we can give you is to book a hostel or hotel with a pool. Leon is a very hot city, and there’s nothing better than taking a refreshing dip in the pool after exploring the city. If you’re traveling on a tight budget, Hostal La Tortuga Booluda is a cool place to stay. The pool is small but big enough to chill in. It has a great atmosphere and offers many fun extras like a pool table and foosball. Leon’s city center is just a 10-minute walk away. Also, Hostal Casa Abierta is a convenient base for exploring Leon because it’s centrally located in the city. It has a beautiful garden with a large pool and a tranquil and friendly atmosphere. The only downside is that the rooms don’t have air conditioning. If you have a bit more to spend, Flor De Sarta, a small-scale hotel, is a great place to stay. You can enjoy a nice pool, spacious air-conditioned rooms, and comfortable beds.

Nicaragua boasts a staggering 19 volcanoes, with 9 of them currently active. You can climb these volcanoes or swim in the crater lake of an extinct one. But if you’re seeking a truly unique experience, you can also zoom down from them at high speeds! There’s only one place in the world where you can do this called volcano boarding, and that’s on the Cerro Negro volcano in Nicaragua. Volcano boarding has become one of the highlights of a trip to Nicaragua. Here, you’ll find everything you need to know about this exceptional activity!

How did volcano boarding originate in Nicaragua?

Volcano boarding was conceived by the Australian thrill-seeker Daryn Webb, who is also the owner of Bigfoot Hostel in Leon. He and his crew started a trial and error investigation at the Cerro Negro volcano to determine the best equipment to conquer the volcano. They tried a snowboard, picnic tables, and even mattresses. Ultimately, they found that a sled made of metal and wood with a Formica-coated surface produced the best results.

Volcano boarding has become so popular that multiple tours to the Cerro Negro volcano depart daily, allowing visitors to zoom down at high speeds. Speeds are measured per person, with the current speed record standing at a whopping 101 km/h (63 mph)! Don’t worry, though; you can control your own speed, so even without a death wish, you can enjoy volcano boarding in Nicaragua.

What does volcano boarding look like?

There are now various organizations offering volcano boarding tours, and not all tours are exactly the same. I opted for the sunset tour via Bigfoot Hostel, the biggest name in volcano boarding in Nicaragua, and they really make it a party. The description of my experience below applies only to this specific tour.

After an introduction, you depart from Bigfoot Hostel in the typical Nicaraguan chicken bus headed for the Cerro Negro volcano. It’s about an hour’s drive before you see the large black hill approaching. Upon arriving at the volcano, everyone is provided with a board, an overall, and safety goggles. It’s advisable to bring as few belongings as possible to the top of the volcano. Anything unnecessary can be left on the bus.

Next comes the hike to the top of the volcano. You’ll walk for a little over an hour, board in tow, over rocks and gravel. It’s not a difficult climb, and there are a few stops along the way, but the added weight of your cumbersome board and the temperature make the hike somewhat more demanding. If you don’t feel like carrying your board up the volcano or if you find it too challenging during the hike, you can choose to have someone carry it for you for a few dollars. You can leave it next to you at any point during the hike, and the carriers will take it up for you. Along the way, be sure to take in the unique landscape surrounding the Cerro Negro volcano.

Once at the top of the Cerro Negro volcano, you’ll be instructed on how to descend with your board, how to control your speed, and safety precautions to take. Pay close attention and make sure you understand everything. Afterward, it’s time to put on the overalls! The image of a group of escaped prisoners will undoubtedly cross your mind.

With everyone in tow, you’ll head toward the edge of the volcano, and then the volcano boarding begins. While you slide down, photos are taken, and your speed is measured with a speed gun.

After volcano boarding, you can enjoy the beautiful sunset and some fun. Coolers filled with fruit and drinks are opened, a campfire is lit for roasting marshmallows, and the bus transforms into a party bus with lights and music. After all the adrenaline and excitement, the return journey in the party bus is a blast.

Is volcano boarding in Nicaragua dangerous?

Just like with any extreme sport, it doesn’t have to be dangerous when you know what you’re doing. However, sliding down a volcano on a wooden board is never completely without risk. There are stories of people taking nasty spills and occasionally getting injured. Nevertheless, many people slide down this volcano daily, and plenty of safety precautions have been taken to ensure things go as smoothly as possible. Additionally, you can control a lot of it with common sense, especially since you can determine your own speed.

Good to know: If you’re at the top and have second thoughts, you can always just run or walk down the mountain, as the guides do.

My Safety Experience

After hearing stories of people losing control of their boards and taking hard falls, I was quite cautious. I wanted to come down in control and not necessarily as the fastest. I knew what to do with my feet, and I must say, you can really control your speed well with this method. At times, I even wished I could go a bit faster. The tricky part is that when you’re really picking up speed, it can be difficult to slow down in a controlled manner. My advice: use your common sense, and you can certainly enjoy this unique experience! It’s better to go a bit too slow volcano boarding than to continue your journey through Nicaragua with an arm in a cast.

You Can Control Your Speed

At the top of the volcano, the guide clearly demonstrates how to sit on the board and what to do with your feet, as this determines your speed. Leaning back with your legs straight makes you go faster, while sitting forward with your heels in the sand slows you down. You can control your speed quite effectively with these adjustments.

Protective Gear

You will also be provided with a thick overall for protection. This is not only to keep your own clothes from getting dirty but primarily to shield you from the hot ground, gravel, and dust you’ll be sliding over. Additionally, you will be given safety goggles to protect your eyes from the small lava rocks that may be launched into the air during volcano boarding. Finally, it is advisable to bring a bandana that you can tie over your mouth to guard against the blowing dust.

What About the Active Cerro Negro Volcano?

Cerro Negro is an active volcano. If you move some earth aside at the summit and touch the ground, you can feel the heat emanating from the Earth’s core. However, they seem to monitor this volcano effectively using sensors that detect vibrations, making it safe to climb Cerro Negro with a guide.

What Should You Bring for Volcano Boarding?

  • 1 liter of water
  • Good shoes
  • A bandana or another piece of fabric/shirt
  • Sunscreen
  • Mosquito repellent
  • A small amount of cash

Tip: If you’re a true thrill-seeker and want to push the speed limits, it’s a good idea to have coverage for extreme sports under your travel insurance, which includes volcano boarding. If something unexpected happens, at least you’ll be covered.

What Does Volcano Boarding in Nicaragua Cost?

Depending on the tour you book, the cost of volcano boarding at Bigfoot Hostel ranges from $30 to $35, and you can book this online. They will pick you up at your hotel or hostel, and the entire tour includes transportation, protective gear, drinks, snacks, and a meal. You will also receive a shirt, and after the tour, you’ll be provided with a link to download the tour photos.

Isla de Ometepe is an island formed by the two volcanoes Concepción and Maderas, rising from Lake Nicaragua. Life here is simple, and everything moves at a slightly slower pace than on the mainland. This place remains wonderfully authentic, offering plenty of enjoyable activities. That’s why Isla de Ometepe is a delightful spot to spend a few days during your journey through Nicaragua! You can make your time here as active or relaxed as you like, from climbing volcanoes to lounging on the beach, or from kayaking to sampling local chocolate. Isla de Ometepe has something for everyone. Let me tell you more about what there is to do on this lovely island!

How to Get to Isla de Ometepe?

Most people travel to Isla de Ometepe from Granada or San Juan del Sur. Below, you’ll find information on how to get there from these locations.

From Granada to Isla de Ometepe

By Local Bus & Boat: In Granada, you can catch the bus to Rivas here. This is about a 1-hour ride. Upon arriving there, you can take the bus to San Jorge, but it doesn’t run very frequently. Many taxi drivers will approach you and offer to take you to San Jorge. Negotiation is necessary here, and the ride should not cost more than a few dollars. From the San Jorge port, a boat departs for Isla de Ometepe approximately every hour, taking you to the island in 1 hour.

From San Juan del Sur to Isla de Ometepe

By Local Bus & Boat: In San Juan del Sur, the bus departs here every 30 minutes to Rivas. There, you can wait for the bus to San Jorge, but it doesn’t run very frequently. It’s easier to take a taxi to the San Jorge port for a few dollars. From there, a boat departs for Isla de Ometepe every hour.

Note: There are two ports on Isla de Ometepe. Most boats go to Moyogalpa, but some boats also go to San José del Sur. So, make sure to check which port is closest to your accommodation and the departure times for each boat. It’s only a 20-minute drive between the ports.

What to Do on Isla de Ometepe?

There’s plenty to do on Isla de Ometepe for every type of traveler. Whether you want to relax or be active, the following tips will keep you entertained.

Explore Isla de Ometepe by Scooter or Bike

Taxis on Isla de Ometepe can be expensive, and buses run only a few times a day. Therefore, renting a scooter, quad, motorbike, or bicycle is the ideal way to explore the island. This gives you the freedom to go wherever you please, and with very little traffic, it’s super easy. Most of the island has paved roads, but there are some unpaved roads where you should be a bit more cautious. You can rent a scooter or motorbike starting from $20 to $25 per day, excluding gasoline, and a bicycle will cost you around $5 per day.

Tip: The police on Isla de Ometepe often try to make some extra money from travelers. So, always wear a helmet, ensure your front and rear lights are working, and carry your driver’s license to avoid any ‘fines’.

Swim at Ojo de Agua

A popular activity among locals and travelers is visiting Ojo de Agua. This is a natural spring where you can swim in refreshing spring water. Some even claim that this water has therapeutic properties due to the minerals it contains, so it’s a great idea to take a dip during your visit to Isla de Ometepe.

The area around the pool is beautifully landscaped with lush tropical plants, making it a delightful spot to relax and find some refreshment on a hot day. Since many locals like to visit here, it can get quite crowded, especially on weekends. It’s best to go early if you don’t like crowds. You’ll pay $10 to enter Ojo de Agua, and you’ll receive a $5 voucher to spend at the restaurant.

Tip: The water continues to flow outside the park into a river that intersects here. Want to avoid the crowds at Ojo de Agua? You can also find a nice spot in the river there. The nature is even more beautiful, and it won’t cost you a thing.

Playa Santo Domingo

For beach lovers, Santo Domingo Beach is a wonderful place to be. Lay your towel on the soft sand or choose a shady spot under the thatched umbrellas. Here, you can enjoy the soothing sound of the waves and the view of the lake. Taking a stroll along the beach is enjoyable, and you can discover many cozy bars and restaurants where you can have lunch or order a refreshing smoothie or cocktail.

Fun Fact: Lake Nicaragua is the only freshwater lake in the world that contains oceanic marine life, including sharks, swordfish, and tarpons. You don’t need to worry about any of these animals when swimming because they won’t harm you, and the chances of seeing them are almost nil.

Enjoy Beautiful Sunsets on Isla de Ometepe

Isla de Ometepe boasts beautiful sunsets and numerous spots to view them. The island has two sides, the Concepción side and the Maderas side, named after the two volcanoes that form the island.

On the Concepción side of the island, you’ll find Punta Jesus Maria. This unique landmass extends into the lake and offers a spectacular view of the setting sun. Walk along the sandy path leading to Punta Jesus Maria and prepare for a breathtaking sunset.

On the Maderas side of the island, Playa Mangos is the hotspot to be. This cozy beach bar is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the colorful sky as the sun slowly disappears below the horizon. With a refreshing drink in hand and your toes in the soft sand, you can end the day in style. You can take a refreshing dip here or rent a canoe to paddle on the lake. With the Concepción volcano in the background, it’s a beautiful and cozy spot to watch the sunset.

Tip: If you’re staying at the lovely Totoco Eco-Lodge, you’ll also have a fantastic sunset view over the volcano from the pool. See the photo below!

Climb One of the Volcanoes on Isla de Ometepe

Do you enjoy a physical challenge? Climbing one of the volcanoes on Isla de Ometepe is an unforgettable experience.

Concepción is the largest and most active of the two volcanoes on Isla de Ometepe, with an impressive height of 1,610 meters (5282 feet). It’s a challenging climb that requires good fitness. The terrain is steep and rocky. The hike to the top and back takes about 8 to 10 hours and can be booked here. Lunch and a guide who can tell you all about the island are included in the tour.

Maderas is the smaller and dormant volcano that is also popular to climb. With a height of 1,394 meters (4573 feet), this hike is slightly less strenuous but still a challenging adventure. The trail passes through a beautiful dense rainforest, and the ascent can be muddy and slippery during the rainy season. Once at the top, you’ll find a beautiful panoramic view and a crater lake, which you’ll undoubtedly want to take a refreshing dip in after this intense climb. On average, this hike takes about 6 to 8 hours in total.

While it’s not mandatory to hire a guide for these hikes, it’s highly recommended. They know the terrain, weather conditions, and can provide you with a lot of interesting information. In the towns of Moyogalpa and Altagracia, you’ll find various tour operators and local guides, but most accommodations can also help you find a guide.

Hike to the Waterfall of San Ramón

If climbing a volcano is a bit too much for you but you’re up for some activity, then the hike to the Waterfall of San Ramón is for you! Put on your hiking shoes and make your way through narrow paths and dense trees until you hear the soothing sound of flowing water getting closer. The hike to the waterfall takes about 1.5 hours one way, and afterward, you can take a refreshing dip in the natural pool at the foot of the waterfall. In the dry season, don’t expect extreme natural power from this waterfall, but enjoy the beautiful nature that this hike has to offer.

Tip: If you’ve arrived here on a scooter or quad, you can also ride the first mile.

Must-Do: Kayaking on the Rio Istián

The best way to experience the beautiful nature of Isla de Ometepe is by taking a kayaking tour. You’ll paddle across the lake at first and then arrive at the Rio Istián River, which flows between the two volcanoes. Once you head up the river after the open stretch on the lake, the landscape turns into a lush mangrove forest. It’s wonderfully peaceful here, and you’ll be surrounded by many animals. With a bit of luck, you’ll spot caimans, turtles, various bird species, and curious monkeys. The Rio Istián kayaking tour is, therefore, one of the most enjoyable things to do on Isla Ometepe. The guide knows the most beautiful spots and can tell you a lot about the nature.

Tip: After booking, arrange a time with the guide for the tour. Be sure to ask for a tour during sunset, as it’s extra beautiful here at that time!

Relax at El Pital Chocolate Paradise

If you come across the large sign that says ‘Chocolate Paradise’ while exploring the island, don’t drive past it; be sure to take that road. This will lead you to El Pital, a delightful chocolate factory, restaurant, and event venue all in one. Their mission is to make and share quality cocoa to create a better connection with yourself, others, and nature. You can participate in cocoa ceremonies here, order delicious items from the restaurant, and, most importantly, relax by the water.

Kitesurfing on Isla de Ometepe

Lake Nicaragua is also a perfect location for kite surfers or those who want to learn. At Playa Santa Cruz, you’ll find the Ometepe Kite Center, where you can rent equipment and book lessons. Whether it’s your first lesson or you’re an experienced water enthusiast looking to learn high jumps, the Ometepe Kite Center offers suitable lessons for every skill level.

Café Campestre – This is the highest-rated restaurant on the island, where you can enjoy delicious sandwiches, burgers, pastas, curries, and more throughout the day.
El Zopilote – This restaurant offers a wide variety of delicious Italian and international organic dishes, with plenty of vegetarian options. The Cornerhouse – Here, you can enjoy a delicious and healthy breakfast and lunch with freshly made sandwiches and homemade products.
Soda Los Antojitos – If you want an inexpensive local meal, this soda is the place to go.

Where to Stay on Isla de Ometepe?

The villages of Balgue, Santa Cruz, and Santo Domingo are all located centrally on the island and right next to each other. Here, you’ll find the most vibrant atmosphere due to the variety of great restaurants and hotels. For most travelers, this is the best place to stay on Isla de Ometepe. Moyogalpa is the village where you arrive by boat and is also the largest village on Isla de Ometepe. You’ll find many restaurants and hotels here, but it’s not the most charming or beautiful place on the island. This is mainly where local tourists stay. Below, we recommend three lovely accommodations, all located within the triangle of Balgue, Santa Cruz, and Santo Domingo.

Our Favorite Places to Stay on Isla de Ometepe

For a unique stay on Isla de Ometepe, consider Totoco Eco-lodge. This lodge is situated at a higher elevation, offering breathtaking views of the lake, volcano, and jungle. Especially during sunset, when the sky turns red and pink, the view is magical. A significant plus is the beautiful pool with the same view. Another unique option is La Bambouseraie. You’ll stay in a beautiful bungalow with plenty of privacy, and some even have views of the volcano. This is the ideal place to fully enjoy the peace and nature. La Urraca Loca Hostel is perfect for budget travelers. This hostel is also surrounded by nature and has a cozy atmosphere due to its small scale.

Granada is the oldest city in Nicaragua, beloved by many for its well-preserved colonial architecture, vibrant culture, and cozy atmosphere. It’s also known as the ‘painting city,’ and when you stroll through its cobbled streets, you’ll immediately understand why it earned this nickname. The city is composed of buildings in all the colors of the rainbow, and everywhere you go, you can enjoy charming restaurants, cafes, and bars. In addition to its cultural attractions, Granada is also a gateway to some of Nicaragua’s most beautiful landscapes, including nearby volcanoes and the islands of Isletas de Granada. In this article, you’ll find information on how to get there, tips for the best restaurants, and the most enjoyable things to do in Granada.

How to Get to Granada?

Since Granada is centrally located in Nicaragua, we’ll describe how to get there from Leon, Isla de Ometepe, San Juan del Sur, and Managua. There are tourist buses on each route, but they are more expensive, so we recommend traveling by local bus, especially since the distances are short.

From Leon to Granada

From Terminal de buses, take the bus to Managua, where you’ll then transfer to the bus heading to Granada. The entire journey takes about 4 hours.

From Isla de Ometepe to Granada

From Isla de Ometepe, take the boat to San Jorge. This boat departs nearly every hour and takes about an hour in total. You can purchase boat tickets on-site. Upon arrival, take a taxi to the bus station in Rivas. This is about a 10-minute ride, and negotiating the price is expected. From Rivas, board the bus, and in about 1 hour, you’ll arrive in Granada.

From San Juan del Sur to Granada

In San Juan del Sur, catch the bus to Rivas and transfer to the bus bound for Granada. It’s likely that many taxi drivers will approach you and tell you various lies to persuade you to take a private taxi with them. Buses depart regularly, so you can ignore the taxi drivers. The bus ride takes approximately 3 hours in total.

From Managua to Granada

From Terminal de Autobuses Mercado Roberto Huembes, large (chicken) buses depart, taking you directly to Granada. You can also take a local minibus from Terminal UCA. These minibuses are about a dollar more expensive than the large buses. The total journey takes an hour.

What to Do in Granada?

There’s a lot to see and experience in Granada, from wandering through the city to exciting excursions in the surrounding area and dancing into the late hours. Below, you’ll find information on the most beautiful sights and the most enjoyable activities in Granada.

Witness Lava at Masaya Volcano

Nicaragua has many volcanoes, seven of which are active. One of them is the Masaya Volcano, and you can get so close that you can see the lava bubbling in the crater. You can only visit with a tour, and you must choose between a daytime or evening visit. The evening tour is the most popular because you can see the lava best in the dark. You’ll arrive at the volcano around sunset, where they park the car about 30 meters (98 feet) from the crater’s edge. Then, you have about 15 minutes to view the lava because it’s not safe to stay longer due to sulfur gases. That might sound short, but after 5 minutes, you’ll start coughing, your throat will hurt, and your eyes will sting. So, 15 minutes is more than enough time to see it and take beautiful photos. You can book tours anywhere in Granada.

Tip: Bring a bandana or scarf to cover your mouth.

Explore Colonial Granada

Granada is a great city to explore on foot. The center is quite compact, making it easy to wander through the colonial center for a few hours and admire the many old colorful buildings. As you stroll through the streets, you’ll naturally pass by many hotspots and attractions such as the central park and the churches. You’ll learn more about them in the following points.

Enjoy the View from Iglesia La Merced

Iglesia La Merced is a beautiful old church located in the center of Granada. The church is known for its baroque architecture, which contrasts nicely with the colonial buildings around it. For one dollar, you can climb the narrow stairs to the bell tower of this church. From here, you can enjoy a stunning 360-degree view of Granada and the countryside beyond. This view is particularly beautiful at sunset.

Fun Fact: You might notice there’s very little high-rise construction in Granada. This is because there are many volcanoes in the area that frequently cause earthquakes. Tall buildings are less resilient and can collapse.

Stroll by the Catedral de Granada

Cathedral de Granada was built in the 16th century and is an iconic landmark for the city. The church is one of the oldest and most important attractions in town. It is located at Parque Central and, with its distinctive yellow color, you won’t easily overlook the cathedral.

Tip: There’s also a viewpoint at the top of this church, but in my opinion, the view from Iglesia la Merced is slightly better.

People-Watch at Parque Central de Granada

Parque Central de Granada is a pleasant place to take a break from exploring the colonial center. There are many benches where you can sit under the trees and people-watch, or you can grab a refreshing drink, ice cream, or snack from one of the stalls. In the evening, it’s often lively with music and dancing.

Experience the Vibrancy of Calle La Calzada

If you walk from the central park past Catedral de Granada, you’ll arrive at one of Granada’s most famous streets. Calle La Calzada is a lively and bustling street in the heart of the city. It consists of colorful colonial buildings, mainly housing restaurants and bars. During the day, you can admire the colored facades and beautiful mosaic artworks on the street, but it’s usually too hot to linger. It’s when the sun sets that the street comes to life with both locals and tourists gathering for a night out in the city. From live music to salsa dancing, there’s always something happening on Calle La Calzada.

Visit the local market Mercado Municipal

The bustling Mercado Municipal market is a must-visit for anyone looking to experience the local culture and cuisine. Located in the heart of Granada, the market is the lively hub where people do their shopping.

Originally, this market was situated in a covered building, but it has since expanded, sprawling through a maze of lanes and streets in all directions. Even if you don’t need anything, it’s enjoyable to wander through this tangle of stalls and strike up conversations with the market vendors. The market is open every day from 5:00 AM to 5:00 PM and is best visited in the morning, especially for fresh food.

Kayaking at Isletas de Granada

If you feel the need to escape the city’s hustle and explore more of Granada’s surroundings, kayaking on the largest lake in Central America is a great choice. During the Isletas de Granada kayak tour, you’ll spend 2.5 hours exploring the beautiful Isletas de Granada. These groups of small islands were formed long ago by an eruption of the Mombacho volcano, resulting in over 350 small islands scattered across the lake. The waters are filled with floating greenery and blooming water lilies, making this place look like a fairytale scene. The song of the Indian Water Lilies from Efteling played in my head throughout the entire tour. While kayaking, you’ll encounter many animals like monkeys, turtles, and tropical birds. Want to learn more about this tour? Read my experience + tips on kayaking at Isletas de Granada.

Dance at Treehouse Jungle Rave

If you want to experience Nicaragua’s nightlife at its best, you must dance at Treehouse Jungle Rave. Every Friday, a great party is organized here, which many travelers consider legendary. The Treehouse is located at the foot of the Mombacho volcano, right in the middle of the jungle, about half an hour from Granada. From the treehouse, you have a view of the jungle, and there’s nothing but nature around you. If you take the early shuttle to The Treehouse at the end of the afternoon, you can watch the fantastic sunset, have some drinks, and maybe even dance a bit. Later in the evening, the real dance party begins, and you can dance into the late hours at this unique location. It’s guaranteed to be an evening you won’t soon forget.

You can order your tickets online starting a week in advance. Free shuttles depart from Granada to take you to and from The Treehouse, and you can book them together with your entrance ticket. Don’t wait too long to buy your tickets because the party is usually sold out, especially during the high season.

Swim in Laguna de Apoyo

The massive crater lake, Laguna de Apoyo, is the ultimate spot for a relaxing afternoon. The water in this lake is at the perfect temperature and crystal clear. The nature surrounding the lake is stunning, as the volcanic eruption has made the area very fertile. You can visit Laguna de Apoyo as a day trip or stay for one or more nights. It’s nice to stay at Paradiso Hostel, but you can also buy a day pass if you have less time. Paradiso Hostel is a cozy place located in a beautiful lakeside location. There are plenty of lounge chairs, and you can play ping-pong, pool, rent kayaks, and there’s a large raft. In the restaurant, you can order snacks and drinks.

Best Restaurants in Granada

La Frontera – A popular and reasonably priced international restaurant where you can enjoy burgers, sandwiches, and burritos, among other dishes.
Pita Pita – Delicious Middle Eastern dishes.
The Garden Cafe – You can visit this place all day for great coffee, bowls, sandwiches, and dinner.
Boca Baco – This tapas bar & grill restaurant offers delicious seafood and meat dishes, sushi, and cocktails. It’s a slightly more upscale place, so prices reflect that.
Verde – A trendy restaurant with many vegetarian options, offering paninis, wraps, salads, and delicious smoothies.
Restaurante El Garaje – You can order dishes from all around the world here. The menu is full of international cuisines, including Sri Lankan, Mexican, Vietnamese, Italian, Greek, you name it!
Tostometro Granada Nicaragua – This menu has only one thing: banana burgers! Okay, admittedly, it might not sound very appetizing, but it is! The buns here are made from bananas. You can choose from meat, chicken, or a vegetarian burger. It’s a tiny restaurant with an open kitchen, and the staff are incredibly friendly.

San Juan del Sur is a colorful coastal town located at the southern tip of Nicaragua. It’s known for its lively parties, great surf spots, and the relaxed atmosphere that permeates the area. You can unwind on one of the nearby beaches, take in the bay from above, or stroll along the promenade. Curious about what else there is to do in San Juan del Sur, where to enjoy delicious meals, and which hostels & hotels are cool? Check out all our tips below!

How to Get to San Juan del Sur?

Most people travel from Granada or Isla de Ometepe to San Juan del Sur. Below, you’ll find information on how to get there from these destinations.

From Granada to San Juan del Sur

By Local Bus: For this route, you’ll catch the bus to Rivas here. Upon arrival in Rivas, it’s best to ignore all taxi drivers who may try to persuade you to take a private taxi by telling you various lies. Look for the bus to San Juan del Sur and ignore anyone approaching you. The bus departs quite regularly, and the total journey takes about 3 hours.

From Isla de Ometepe to San Juan del Sur

By Boat & Local Bus: There are two ports on Isla de Ometepe, but most boats depart from the Moyogalpa port. Boats depart fairly regularly, and you can inquire about the current departure times at your hotel. The boat will drop you off in San Jorge, and from there, it’s a short ride by bus or taxi to Rivas. Buses to San Juan del Sur depart frequently from the Rivas bus station. Rivas is infamous for the many taxi drivers who will try to mislead you into traveling with them instead of taking the bus. So, be sure to ignore them and patiently find the right bus. The entire journey takes about 3.5 hours.

What to Do in San Juan del Sur?

There are plenty of things to do in San Juan del Sur. Here are the most enjoyable activities I’ve compiled for you.

Horseback Riding on the Beach

Horses are still a widely used means of transportation in Nicaragua’s countryside. A horseback riding tour is the perfect way to explore the surroundings of San Juan del Sur. Rancho Chilamate is a renowned equestrian center in Nicaragua offering various beautiful horseback riding tours suitable for different levels. Even if you’ve never ridden a horse before, the trained horses and guides will ensure that the tour exceeds your expectations.

Horseback riding in San Juan del Sur is a true Nicaraguan experience. You can choose your own cowboy boots, hat, and bandana in advance. Our favorite tour is the ride to the beach, where, if you’d like, you can also gallop along the shore. However, this tour can only take place during low tide. When low tide coincides with sunset, you’re in for an undoubtedly stunning journey.

Ascend to the Viewpoint at Sunset

While walking through San Juan del Sur, you’ll notice the presence of Jesus in many places. There’s a colossal statue of Jesus Christ on a hill at the edge of the bay. He stands atop the Mirador del Cristo de la Misericordia viewpoint, overlooking the city from a height of 134 meters (440 feet). The statue is 24 meters (78 feet) tall, and the viewpoint offers a breathtaking view of San Juan del Sur to those who venture up the climb.

You can walk up the beach and through the village to the mountain in about half an hour. The last stretch is quite steep, so avoid it during the hottest part of the day. It’s best to do this at sunset because that’s when you’ll have the most beautiful view of the day. You can walk up until 5:30 PM and pay a few dollars for entry.

Tip: If you don’t feel like walking to the viewpoint, you can also take a taxi up.

Unique Accommodation near Playa Maderas

If you’re looking to spend a few nights in a special place during your journey through Nicaragua, you must visit Hostel Clandestino Maderas. This lovely spot is just an 8-minute walk from the surfing beach, Playa Maderas, and you’ll sleep amidst the jungle with monkeys. There’s a shared kitchen, a yoga deck, and beautiful communal areas where you can easily meet fellow travelers. Here, you can enjoy a fantastic view from your hammock. You can choose between a private bungalow, the Volkswagen camper, or a bed in the dormitory. Good to know: you can usually book your stay only 2 to 3 months in advance. Playa Maderas is a 20-minute drive from San Juan del Sur.

The Biggest Pool Party in Central America: Sunday Funday

If you’re a fan of parties, make sure you’re in San Juan del Sur on a Sunday because every Sunday, you can join the biggest pool party in Central America! Sunday Funday is a popular event that many travelers even travel to or return for just to be a part of it. You’ll party all day, moving from one pool party to another at three different hostels. You can view photos and purchase tickets through the Instagram account of Sunday Funday.

Surfing in San Juan del Sur

For surfing enthusiasts, San Juan del Sur is definitely a destination to add to your travel itinerary. While the beach in the town itself isn’t ideal for surfing and is more for relaxation, there are nearby beaches with perfect conditions for catching some waves.

Playa Maderas is one of the most popular surf spots. You’ll find some restaurants there, and you can rent surfboards or take a surf lesson. Hostel Casa Oro offers daily shuttles to this beach, which cost just a few dollars for a round trip. The shuttle ride to Playa Maderas takes about 20 minutes.

Relax in the Colorful Downtown

Just like in many cities in Nicaragua, the houses in San Juan del Sur come in a variety of vibrant colors. Combined with the numerous charming restaurants and cafes, the downtown area is a delightful place to hang out. Settle down in one of the hidden courtyards, capture some beautiful photos of the colorful buildings, or grab a cool souvenir. Below, you’ll find my recommendations for the best restaurants.

Best Restaurants in San Juan del Sur

Simon Says – This cozy garden spot serves breakfast and lunch, offering delicious smoothies, sandwiches, meat, fish, and salads. There’s something for everyone.
Nacho San Juan del Sur – Enjoy tasty Mexican dishes along with mojitos and, of course, tequila.
The Beach House Nicaragua – A beautiful beachside spot with a focus on fresh seafood. Be sure to try the ceviche!
La Vecchia Signora – The best pizzeria in town.
Dale Pues – From salads to burgers, breakfast to pasta, you can enjoy great food all day long here.
The Art Warehouse – Offers tasty breakfast options and tapas platters. Plus, they occasionally host fun creative workshops.
Taco Stop – Craving a quick bite? This restaurant serves delicious tacos with fresh ingredients and homemade tortillas.
Ding Repair Café – In this trendy cafe, you can savor healthy dishes, including various smoothie bowls, burritos, avocado toast, pancakes, and more.

Where to Stay in San Juan del Sur?

In the village of San Juan del Sur, you’ll find only a few good hostels and hotels. However, just outside the village, you’ll discover some fantastic accommodations. These places are often nestled in nature and offer something truly special. Staying here will undoubtedly enhance your visit to San Juan del Sur. The accommodations below are all just a few miles away from the village, but with the usually free shuttle or scooter, you can easily reach the center.

Our Favorite Places to Stay in San Juan del Sur

the SPACE. looks like a luxury resort but is actually a cozy hostel that organizes many activities. You can join the free yoga class every day, attend movie nights, and participate in a weekly quiz night. The delightful pool, bar, and excellent restaurant make this place truly enjoyable. Every Sunday, it’s a big party here because this hostel is one of the three locations where Sunday Funday is organized, as mentioned earlier in this article. Speaking of which, we need to mention Hostel Clandestino Maderas again. It’s genuinely a fantastic accommodation. You’ll sleep in a bungalow in the middle of the jungle, surrounded by monkeys, and you can enjoy a fantastic view from your hammock. Eden on the Chocolata is another remarkable place. This eco-lodge features an amazing pool with a view of the jungle and the ocean beyond. Your stay is in a fantastic room built entirely from natural materials, and from your veranda, you’ll have that same breathtaking view.

Isletas de Granada is a group of small islands located in Lake Nicaragua, near Granada. These islands were formed thousands of years ago by the eruption of the nearby Mombacho volcano, resulting in a total of 365 small islands scattered across the area. The most enjoyable way to explore this beautiful place is through the Isletas de Granada kayak tour. Thanks to the fertile volcanic soil, Isletas de Granada has developed into a stunning natural area. The waters are filled with floating greenery and blooming water lilies, creating a fairy-tale-like scene. The melody of the “Indische Waterlelies” song from Efteling played in my head throughout the entire tour.

The Unique Nature of Isletas de Granada

The beautiful Isletas de Granada have a unique charm, and each island looks different. They vary in size, from small uninhabited islets to larger ones with luxury houses and even small communities. Some islands are privately owned, while others are home to local fishermen and farmers.

The natural surroundings in the area are lush and green, hosting a rich ecosystem where you can encounter a variety of wildlife. Many bird species call this place home, including herons, kingfishers, and cormorants. You might even spot the motmot with its turquoise “eyebrows,” which happens to be the national bird of Nicaragua. During your kayak tour, you may also see monkeys, turtles, and other wild animals. Lake Nicaragua is the only lake in the world where freshwater sharks exist, although they are not commonly encountered. During my kayak tour, I even witnessed cows swimming from one island to another to graze, a truly unique sight.

What Does the Kayak Tour at Isletas de Granada Look Like?

The day begins early, as you’ll be picked up from your accommodation at 6:00 AM, and it’s a 15-minute drive to the starting point of the kayak tour. In the early morning, you have a better chance of spotting wildlife, and the weather is still cool. The initial part of the journey takes you across the lake, away from the mainland. Soon, you’ll paddle through a true jungle where the water is covered in floating plants. During the kayak tour, the guide will provide you with plenty of information about Isletas de Granada, and there’s a good chance the guide will spot many birds and other animals.

After a while, you’ll paddle through a inhabited section of Islatas de Granada. You’ll pass by private islands with houses on them, each one more luxurious than the last. It’s fascinating to hear from the guide about the types of people who live on these islands and what life is like here. There are even restaurants and a school for the locals who reside here.

Next, it’s time for a well-deserved break. You’ll dock at an island where you can visit the historic San Pablo Fort, dating back to the 18th century and offering a glimpse into Nicaragua’s colonial past. Take a rest while sipping on a coconut and enjoy the view. After the break, it’s just a short paddle back to Granada.

What Should You Bring for Kayaking?

When kayaking at Isletas de Granada, it’s advisable not to bring too much with you. There isn’t much space in the kayak, reducing the risk of losing anything. Here’s a small packing list with the essential items to bring:

  • Ample water
  • A hat or cap to protect against the sun
  • Sunscreen
  • A dry bag
  • Some cash for snacks and a tip for the guide

Where Can You Book the Kayak Tour?

This delightful and relaxing activity lasts for 2.5 hours and can be booked here. If your travel plans change, you can cancel for free up to 24 hours in advance. The minimum number of people required for booking is two. Enjoy your time at Isletas de Granada!

Little Corn Island is the perfect place to conclude your journey through Nicaragua. This small paradise offers everything you’d imagine when thinking of a Caribbean island. White beaches lined with swaying palm trees, friendly locals who greet you with a smile, and a wonderfully laid-back atmosphere. It’s not large, as the island is 3 kilometers (1.8 miles) long and 1.5 kilometers (0.9 miles) wide. In about 45 minutes, you can walk from the south to the north along the many narrow paths that wind across the island. Relax completely on the most beautiful beaches, savor a fresh smoothie in a hammock, and clear your mind by going completely offline. Welcome to Little Corn Island!

How to Get to Little Corn Island?

There are essentially two ways to travel to Little Corn Island: by plane or by bus and boat.

By Plane from Managua to Little Corn Island

The easiest and quickest way is to fly from Managua with La Costeña. Unfortunately, this is also the most expensive option as flight ticket prices can be on the high side. Prices vary depending on the season but start at $195 for a round trip. After a 1.5-hour flight, you’ll arrive at Big Corn Island, where you can take a taxi to the harbor. From the harbor, a boat departs for Little Corn Island every morning and afternoon, aligning with flight arrivals. After approximately 30 minutes of sailing, you’ll reach your destination.

By Bus + Boat from Managua to Little Corn Island

If you find flying too expensive, you can also travel to Little Corn Island by bus and boat for a very reasonable cost. From Managua, head to Terminal Costa Atlántica and catch a bus to Bluefields. This is an 8 to 9-hour journey, with both overnight and daytime buses available. In Bluefields, board the ferry, and it’s about a 6-hour ride to Big Corn Island. Keep in mind that the ferry only departs a few times a week. Unfortunately, we couldn’t find reliable information about ferry departure times and days. We flew ourselves, so we don’t have experience with the ferry. It’s advisable to inquire at a tour agency in Managua for information. If you happen to know more about the ferry schedule, we would greatly appreciate it if you could share this information with us so that we can update this article and assist more travelers.

Tip: The sea between Big Corn Island and Little Corn Island can often be quite rough. The boats travel at high speeds, making this journey sometimes quite intense. It’s smart to wear a raincoat or poncho because there’s a good chance you’ll get wet. Also, a rain cover for your backpack and bag is useful to keep your belongings dry. If you tend to get seasick, it’s a good idea to take a motion sickness pill beforehand. Sitting at the back of the boat minimizes the impact of the waves. When there’s strong wind, only large boats operate, but normally, you’ll travel in a small panga boat. Don’t be discouraged because this journey lasts only 20 to 30 minutes and will be over before you know it.

What to Do on Little Corn Island?

You don’t come to Little Corn Island for an abundance of activities. It’s all about the relaxed island life and the beautiful tropical beaches. However, there are a few things that are definitely worth doing here.

Snorkeling and Diving

Off the coast of Little Corn Island lies a reef where you can snorkel beautifully. While snorkeling, you’ll encounter a lot of marine life, such as sea turtles, rays, and blacktip reef sharks. You can book a snorkeling tour at both Little Corn Island Beach Bungalow and Yemaya Reefs, where you’ll visit the most beautiful snorkeling spots on the island. Little Corn Island is also known for its fantastic diving opportunities, with a total of 20 dive sites around the island. Dolphin Dive Little Corn is a reputable dive school, and if you don’t have a diving certification, you can get one here.

Join a Yoga Class

The Little Corner is a yoga school in the southern part of Little Corn Island where yoga classes are held a few times a week, often in the early morning or late afternoon. Kelly is the yoga instructor, and you can contact her via WhatsApp if you want to participate in one of her classes. Her number is: +505 5741 4296.

Kayaking or Stand-Up Paddleboarding

Hop in a kayak or onto a SUP board to explore the blue waters around Little Corn Island. Both Little Corn Island Beach Bungalow and Yemaya Reefs rent out kayaks and boards. When renting, inquire about the current weather conditions. Sometimes there’s a strong wind, causing large waves on one side of the island, and it’s not advisable to paddle in that direction.

The Most Beautiful Beach on Little Corn Island

The beaches often have seaweed, palm leaves, and coconuts scattered around, giving it a rugged and unspoiled feel. However, sometimes the white sand isn’t as visible due to these elements. In the far north of Little Corn Island lies the beautiful Yemaya Reefs Resort. They clean the beach daily, and even if you’re not staying there, you can relax on the beach. The beach is filled with palm trees, and the water is crystal clear blue.

Tip: If you have a generous budget and want to treat yourself to a stay in a beautiful bungalow on the most beautiful beach of Little Corn Island, book one or more nights at Yemaya Reefs. This is the most beautiful hotel on the island, and you’ll stay in a fantastic bungalow with sea views. It’s pure bliss.

You Can Keep a Trip to Little Corn Island Affordable

Many travelers find a trip to Little Corn Island expensive and therefore opt not to visit this tropical paradise. And yes, there’s some truth to that because the round-trip flight does cost a fair amount of money. Additionally, food and drinks on the island are pricier than on the mainland of Nicaragua. This is because the island is so remote, and everything has to be imported. However, you can still keep it relatively cheap by considering a few things.

Tips to Save Money

  1. Shop for groceries in Managua before departure. For example, bring along some muesli for breakfast and buy fruit, milk, or yogurt on the island. Don’t forget snacks and/or alcoholic beverages.
  2. Don’t use credit cards on the island as high transaction fees will be charged. Ensure you have enough cash with you on Little Corn Island because there are no ATMs.
  3. You can find some local restaurants where you can enjoy fresh fish at a reasonable price. One of them is Rosa’s Restaurant, where you can have a tasty meal for just a few dollars.

No Motorized Transportation

One of the unique aspects of Little Corn Island is the absence of motorized transportation. Everything here is done on foot, by bicycle, or occasionally on horseback. This creates an atmosphere of ultimate tranquility and relaxation. The island is crisscrossed with narrow pathways, some paved and others unpaved.

Best Restaurants on Little Corn Island

Due to its small size, the restaurant options on the island are not extensive. However, there are some great places to enjoy a meal. Here are our favorites:

Tranquilo Cafe – This may be the coziest restaurant on the island. They offer tacos, fish & chips, and burgers on their menu, and in the evening, it’s a great place for drinks.
Turned Turtle Bar and Restaurant – This charming restaurant is located on the beach and serves delightful breakfast and lunch options. For breakfast, they have pancakes, omelets, and French toast on the menu. For lunch, you can enjoy fresh seafood.
Cafe Desideri – At this lovely spot, you can indulge in delicious lunches and dinners. Order a panini, pizza, pasta, wrap, or fresh fish.
Rosas Restaurant – As mentioned earlier in this article, Rosas Restaurant offers affordable and tasty dining options. Their menu mainly features seafood dishes but also includes meat options and a few vegetarian choices.

Electricity Isn’t Guaranteed

On the island, you’ll truly disconnect from the world, and it’s wonderful to put your phone away for a few days. It’s important to know that they have a different approach to electricity here. There’s no electricity from 6:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Some restaurants and hotels have their own generators to ensure a continuous power supply. However, there might be times when the generators fail, leaving you without power.

Bring Sufficient Cash to Little Corn Island

There are no ATMs on the island, so make sure to carry enough cash with you. It’s better to have a little extra than to run out of money on your last day. While there is an ATM on Big Corn Island, we recommend withdrawing money in Managua for added security.

Pack a Headlamp and Rain Poncho

Since it gets dark early on Little Corn Island, and it gets really dark, it’s advisable to bring a headlamp with you. This is especially important if you’re not staying in the main village, as you’ll need to walk back to your hotel in the dark after dinner. Additionally, it’s a good idea to pack a poncho or rain jacket because the weather can be unpredictable. While the sun may be shining one moment, you could experience a short tropical downpour just five minutes later.

Our Favorite Places to Stay on Little Corn Island

Unfortunately, the selection of hotels on Little Corn Island is quite limited, but we still have three great recommendations for you. If you’re traveling on a tight budget, Christina’s Guest House is perfect. It’s located in a very central spot near restaurants, the beach, and across from the pier where you arrive by boat. The guesthouse is relatively basic but has everything you need for a comfortable stay. Looking for more luxury? A bit further down the coast, you’ll find Little Corn Island Beach and Bungalow. This is a beautiful eco-lodge with lovely beachfront bungalows! You’ll fall asleep to the sound of waves in the background, truly immersing yourself in the island vibe. Lastly, we must recommend Yemaya Reefs. If it fits your budget, staying here is fantastic. You’ll be pampered with luxury, and from your bungalow, you can walk straight onto the island’s most beautiful beach. Pure bliss!

Don’t Hesitate, Just Go!

Despite the expensive airfare, this island is absolutely worth the trip. Your journey through Nicaragua won’t be complete without spending a few days in this tropical paradise. Little Corn Island is unlike any other place in Nicaragua, offering a truly paradisiacal and laid-back experience.
