Panama is one of the most beautiful countries in Central America. Here you can enjoy white sandy beaches with crystal clear water, spot wildlife in lush rainforests, surf perfect waves, and explore the lively Panama City. The locals are friendly, and they are quite laid back. What more could you ask for on a trip? Our diverse travel route for Panama ensures that you visit the best places, stay in the finest accommodations, and don’t miss a thing. With our tips, you can plan your trip through Panama in no time.

Transportation for this Panama itinerary

When it comes to transportation, there are two options for traveling in Panama: public transport or renting a car for a road trip. While public transport can take you to all the destinations on our itinerary, some places may require four to five bus transfers. If you have the option, we recommend renting a car for part of your trip. With a rental car, you can easily visit destinations that are harder to reach, and for the remaining parts of your itinerary, you can take the bus. Check out our tips for renting and driving a car in Panama to determine which parts of your trip a rental car would be helpful for.

How many weeks do you need for this itinerary?

Whether you have two, three, or four weeks to explore Panama, our route is easily adjustable, allowing you to skip one or more destinations. However, if you’re keen on following our entire travel route, we recommend taking at least three weeks to cover it. Adding a few extra days or even a week is highly recommended if you have the opportunity, giving you ample time to explore each destination. Below, we’ve briefly described all the travel destinations on our route, but feel free to click through to the article about a specific destination to learn how to get there, what there is to do, and our tips for good restaurants and accommodations. This way, you can get a good idea of each destination and decide for yourself how many days you want to spend at each one.

Tip: Do you want or need to shorten this itinerary? Then as a first step, we would skip the San Blas islands because you already need two travel days for them, apart from the days you would spend there. If you still need to skip something, we recommend choosing between Playa Venao or Santa Catalina.

Panama City

Panama City is an excellent starting point. Unlike many other capital cities in Central America, Panama City is a nice place to begin your trip. It’s modern, safe, and offers plenty of interesting sights to explore while adjusting to the time difference and tropical temperatures. On your first day in Panama, take a stroll through the small rainforest of the Metropolitan Natural Park where you can spot coatis, sloths, and other wildlife. Then, visit the fish market to try some delicious ceviche. Of course, a visit to the Panama Canal is a must-do, and you can end your day at one of the rooftop bars with a view of the Panama City skyline. Check out our article with things to do in Panama City to learn about other exciting activities to do while you’re there.

San Blas islands

If you have the time and budget, be sure to visit the San Blas Islands. This archipelago comprises 357 tiny islands that are part of the Kuna Indians’ territory. Only about 50 of the islands are inhabited, so most of them have nothing more than a few palm trees. On the San Blas Islands, you can enjoy activities such as snorkeling, sailing, kayaking, and drinks by the campfire. However, visiting the San Blas Islands requires some planning and it is not cheap. Read all our tips for visiting the San Blas Islands to learn more about this beautiful destination.

El Valle de Anton

El Valle de Anton is a charming mountain village in the heart of an extinct volcano crater, located just a two-hour drive from Panama City. The old crater edges from rolling green hills, offering beautiful hiking trails that have stunning views. If you’re still in your home country’s time zone, make sure to wake up early and catch the sunrise from one of the mountain tops. After a morning of hiking, unwind in the hot springs and explore the butterfly garden, where you can spot colorful butterflies. Our article with things to do in El Valle de Anton describes several hikes to choose from, including the most beautiful ones.

Playa Venao

The next destination on our itinerary is the small coastal town of Playa Venao. It’s the atmosphere that draws many travelers here, especially in the evening when there’s always a party somewhere, and you can dance under the clear starry sky with your feet in the sand. Apart from that, you can indulge in activities such as surfing, yoga, horseback riding on the beach, and taking refreshing dips in the sea at Playa Venao. To learn more about the various hotspots, check out our article with the best things to do in Playa Venao.

Santa Catalina

Santa Catalina is an up and coming travel destination in Panama. This small fishing village offers some of the best surf spots in Central America and serves as the perfect place to relax while getting ready for a visit to the Coiba National Park, which has a rich underwater world. While diving or snorkeling, you can encounter turtles, sharks, rays, whales, and even whale sharks. The island’s beaches are pure white, adorned with swaying palm trees. Make sure to plan a day trip to Coiba National Park when visiting Santa Catalina. To learn more about other exciting activities in Santa Catalina, check out our article with things to do in Santa Catalina.

Boquete

After the laid-back beach destinations, the route continues towards Boquete, where you can explore the rich jungle of Panama. It’s time for some action after all those cocktails on the beach. Hike through the rainforest to various waterfalls, where you’ll come across some of the most extraordinary tropical plants. With a bit of luck, you might even spot a quetzal, considered to be the most beautiful bird in the world. Boquete is a paradise for nature lovers. In addition to several beautiful hikes, you can also visit a coffee plantation or go do other outdoor activities such as rafting, zip-lining, or bouldering. Check out our article with the best things to do in Boquete to get an overview of the most beautiful hikes and activities.

Bocas del Toro

We’ve arrived at the last destination of our Panama itinerary. Fortunately, Bocas del Toro offers the perfect opportunity to unwind before heading back to Panama City. This beautiful archipelago has a range of islands where you can spend your final days. Choose a beachfront villa to relax and soak up the sun, or explore the lively scene on the main island of Colón. Bocas del Toro truly has something for everyone – whether you’re biking to secluded beaches, searching for red poison dart frogs in the jungle, or sipping cocktails at a floating bar. Be sure to check out our article with things to do in Bocas del Toro to discover more about the many islands.

Renting a car in Panama is an absolute must because this country is perfect for a road trip. The distances are not too big, the traffic is quiet and you drive through beautiful landscapes. When you rent a car, you save yourself the hassle of transferring to multiple local buses and you are much more flexible to go where you want. Renting a car gives you the ultimate feeling of freedom and Panama is a great country to explore by rental car. In this article you can read my experience and tips for renting and driving a car in Panama.

For which part of your trip to Panama is renting a car a good idea?

If you’re planning a trip through Panama, you may be wondering whether renting a car is necessary. While it’s possible to get around using public transportation , some places can be a bit harder to reach. For instance, traveling to the beautiful beach spots of Playa Venao and Santa Catalina, which you will visit if you follow our Panama itinerary, may require multiple transfers, making the journey quite strenuous. Renting a car offers more flexibility and freedom, allowing you to avoid the hassle of public transportation or taxis.

That’s why we recommend the following: After possibly visiting the San Blas Islands, pick up your rental car in Panama City. Then, with the rental car, visit the destinations of El Valle de Anton, Playa Venao, Santa Catalina, and Boquete. You can drop off the rental car after Boquete in David, which is a 30-minute drive south of Boquete. From there, you can take a bus to Bocas del Toro. If you want to save some money, you can also drop off the rental car in David first and then travel by bus to Boquete. That way, you’ll have had the convenience of a rental car for the challenging route between Valle de Antón, Playa Venao, Santa Catalina, and David. Please refer to the map of our travel route below for clarification.

Can you combine Panama and Costa Rica with a rental car?

If you’re considering a trip that combines Panama and Costa Rica, there are some important things to keep in mind. Unfortunately, it’s not possible to rent a car in one country and return it in another, so you’ll need to book two separate rental cars. Most travelers cross the border between Bocas del Toro (Panama) and Puerto Viejo (Costa Rica), but it’s not possible to return your car in Bocas del Toro. Instead, you’ll need to return the rental car in Panama City or David, Panama and rent a new car in Costa Rica from Puerto Viejo. Of course, if you’re traveling in the opposite direction, you can do the same in reverse. To help plan your trip, check out our suggested itineraries for both Panama and Costa Rica. These itineraries can help you combine the best of both countries.

Is it safe to rent a car in Panama?

Driving through Panama is generally a very safe experience. While traffic can be busier around Panama City, drivers are generally skilled and the driving is safe. Once you’re out of Panama City, driving is quite peaceful. The roads are not crowded, and people drive with care and consideration.

Tip: never leave your belongings unattended in plain sight in the car Always put your backpack in your trunk with the cover over it. So, when picking up your rental car, make sure that a cover is available.

How are the roads in Panama?

When it comes to driving in Panama, the good news is that it’s generally easy and straightforward. Most of the roads are in good condition, especially the Pan-American Highway (also known as the Panamericana in Spanish), which is the longest highway in the world and runs through Panama from North to South America. The Panamericana is well-maintained, but once you leave it, you may encounter rougher or unpaved roads with bumps and potholes that require extra attention.

Be aware that speed bumps are common in and around villages, and they can sometimes be poorly marked or not marked at all. To avoid any accidents, slow down whenever you see houses nearby. In addition to speed bumps, there may be potholes on the road that you should keep an eye out for. While asphalt roads may have some holes, unpaved roads like those leading to Playa Venao or Santa Catalina can be especially tricky to navigate due to numerous potholes and gravel. But with a little bit of caution and patience, driving on these roads is manageable.

Do you need a 4-wheel drive car in Panama?

If you plan to follow our Panama itinerary, you don’t need to rent a 4-wheel drive car. While there may be some unpaved roads along the way, they’re generally passable with a regular rental car as there are no steep mountain passes to navigate.

Good to know: you don’t need an international driving license to drive in Panama, but make sure to have both your license and the car papers with you in the vehicle, as the police may request to see them at any time

The traffic rules in Panama

When driving in Panama, it’s important to keep in mind that you’ll be driving on the right side of the road. Additionally, there are some things to consider while driving in Panama. For instance, you may notice some drivers overtaking on the right, even though this is prohibited by law. Moreover, the entry lanes on the Panamericana are not always well-designed, but there are usually insert lanes between lanes to facilitate crossing busy roads safely and easily.

Speed checks are commonly conducted on the Panamericana and you may come across several police officers along the way, especially if you’re driving for several hours. If you notice oncoming traffic flashing their headlights at you, it’s usually an indication that you need to be alert for something, such as a speed trap, accident, or animal on the road. So, be prepared to adjust your driving accordingly.

Tips for navigating in Panama

Using the Waze app is highly recommended for navigating around Panama. The app utilizes real-time data and enables users to report accidents, checks, and even potholes on the road. As a user, you will receive timely notifications about any potential issues while driving on the same road. It is important to note that a SIM card with an internet connection is required to receive these up-to-date reports. You can purchase these SIM cards from various locations for just a few dollars.

Important: bring your creditcard

When you go to pick up your rental car, it is important to have a credit card in the name of the main driver. This is required for the rental car deposit. Without a credit card in the name of the main driver, you will not be able to receive the rental car. Also, make sure that there is sufficient balance on this credit card for the deposit. The amount of the deposit may vary depending on the car and can be found under the “terms and conditions” section. If you don’t have a credit card yet, we recommend getting one.

What does it cost to rent a car in Panama?

When renting a car in Mexico, prices can vary depending on the season and how early you book. The price for a regular car starts at $50 per day, including full insurance. Booking a rental car through Rentalcars.com is highly recommended for Panama. With a rental car, you always have a chance of damage and problems along the way, which is why it’s smart to book with a reliable party. At Rentalcars, you can always take out a Full Protection Insurance, you can change your booking for free and all conditions are clearly indicated. So you don’t have to worry about snags and if something goes wrong on your trip, everything is always reimbursed and taken care of. This is totally worth it as far as we are concerned, especially on holiday.

Note: Sometimes the local rental company will try to sell you extra insurances. These are absolutely unnecessary as everything is covered with Rentalcars’ Full Protection Insurance. So don’t be fooled because you are 100% covered, even your excess will be refunded in case of damage.

Price hikes due to shortage of cars: There is currently a huge shortage of rental cars worldwide. To survive the corona crisis, car rental companies have had to sell a large portion of their cars. Since demand is rising fast, there are not enough chips for new cars and prices are skyrocketing due to the shortage. As a result, many rental cars are double the price or even fully booked. It’s best to book as early as possible to be sure of a rental car that is still somewhat affordable. At Rentalcars.com, you can currently cancel or change your booking free of charge up to 48 hours in advance, so you are not stuck with anything but still be sure of a rental car.

The post What to Do in Santa Catalina in Panama? 10 Tips! appeared first on TRAVELREBELS.

Santa Catalina is a quaint fishing village located on the Pacific coast of Panama that remains a relatively undiscovered travel spot. Here, locals and travelers coexist, creating a wonderful, tranquil atmosphere. Santa Catalina may not offer a wide variety of activities, but it’s a must-visit for surf enthusiasts due to its fantastic surf spots, relaxed ambiance, and Coiba National Park, which boasts a rich underwater world. The volcanic reef along the coast gives the area a unique appearance, and numerous hammocks are available for those seeking a few relaxing days. In this article, you’ll find all of my tips for Santa Catalina!

How to get in Santa Catalina?

Santa Catalina can be reached by rental car or bus. Renting a car is by far the most convenient option, as taking the bus may require changing buses. For more information on renting a car in Panama, check out our tips for renting a car in Panama. Below are the details on how to get to Santa Catalina from various destinations.

From El Valle de Anton to Santa Catalina

By bus: To get to Santa Catalina by bus from El Valle de Anton, take the bus to Las Uvas and transfer to the bus going to Santiago de Veraguas. From Santiago de Veraguas, take the bus to Sonas and then take the bus from Sonas to Santa Catalina. The whole trip takes approximately 8 hours.

By rental car: This is a 5 to 6 hour journey.

From Playa Venao to Santa Catalina

By bus:Take the early morning bus to Las Tablas and transfer to the bus to Chitre. Then take the bus to Santiago de Veraguas and transfer again to the bus to Sona. In Sona, transfer for the last time to the bus to Santa Catalina. The entire journey takes about 8 hours.

By rental car: If you have a rental car, you will be on the road for about 5 to 6 hours.

From Boquete to Santa Catalina

By bus: From Boquete, take the bus to David and transfer to the bus heading towards Santiago de Veraguas. Then transfer again to the bus to Sona and from Sona, take the bus to Santa Catalina. The entire journey takes about 7 to 8 hours.

By rental car: You cannot pick up a rental car in Boquete, but you can do so in nearby David. Take the bus from Boquete that will take you to David in about an hour and pick up your rental car there. From David, it is a 4 to 5 hour drive to Santa Catalina.

Tip: Since 2022, there is an ATM in Santa Catalina, but it does not always work, so bring enough cash.

What to do in Santa Catalina?

It’s highly recommended to stay in Santa Catalina for at least two to three days, but staying longer is definitely a great idea.

Take a daytrip to Coiba National Park

Coiba National Park is a popular destination in Santa Catalina and known for its unique plant and animal life, earning it the nickname ‘Galapagos Islands of Panama’. The park encompasses 38 islands, with Isla Coiba being the most famous. Until 2004, Isla Coiba served as a prison, but now it is a protected national park. As the islands lack infrastructure, such as hotels and electricity, the main attraction is the stunning nature. Despite its significance, Coiba National Park is not heavily visited, making it an ideal destination for those seeking a tranquil and authentic experience.

Visiting Coiba National Park requires a guide, but guided day trips can be easily booked through most accommodations in Santa Catalina. The journey to the park takes approximately 1.5 hours by boat, but it’s definitely worth it, as dolphins and whales can often be spotted along the way. Once at Coiba National Park, visitors can explore various sandy beaches and go snorkeling or diving at different locations. The underwater world here is stunning, with high chances of seeing turtles, reef sharks, rays, and other tropical fish. From December to January, visitors have the best chance of seeing whale sharks and manta rays, and from June to September, humpback whales can be spotted in the area. Coiba National Park is truly a unique and remarkable destination.

Tip: Do you want to enjoy Coiba National Park for longer? If you want to experience more of Coiba National Park, consider booking a tour with an overnight stay at the ranger station. The accommodation is simple, but this gives you the opportunity to hike on the island and explore more of the park.

Watch the sunset in Santa Catalina

Santa Catalina offers many beautiful spots along the coast to enjoy the sunset. Take a stroll on the beach or enjoy a delicious cocktail at the bar with your feet in the sand. Some places that I highly recommend are Surfers Paradise and the stunning Playa El Estero. However, for the ultimate sunset experience, head over to Playa Santa Catalina to catch the best view of the sun sinking into the sea

Tip: This location is also a beautiful and relatively hidden spot to enjoy the sunset. To get there, turn left at the gate of Vista Coiba and take the path before reaching the beach. Then, turn left again and continue past the hill with a ruined house until you reach a stunning view..

Yoga in Santa Catalina

Yoga is often offered in areas with surfing, making it a perfect combination to train your body for surfing movements or find inner peace. The wide beaches of Santa Catalina are perfect for practicing yoga in the morning by the water. You can also attend yoga classes in Santa Catalina, for example at Waluaa. In addition to yoga classes, Waluaa also has Professional Surf Coaching and Surf and Yoga Retreats. They specialize in complete beginner up to intermediate level.

Go surfing or take a surf lesson

Santa Catalina is widely considered as one of the best surf spots in Panama, and some even say in all of Central America. Surfers of all levels can find good surfing conditions here year-round. It’s the place where the best surfers in the country can be found, and where you can take lessons to improve your skills.

Playa El Estero is a popular beach among surfers, located about a 20-minute walk from the main street on the other side of the village. The waves at this beach are gentle enough for beginners, making it an ideal spot for surf lessons. The beach is also bustling with activity. However, experienced surfers seeking a more challenging experience should head over to Punta Brava. This spot is not recommended for beginners due to the waves being close to the reef, which can make it dangerous.

.

Tip: You can rent surfboards and take lessons almost everywhere. If you want to learn to surf properly and dedicate a few days to it, you can, for example, go to Hotel Oasis & Surf Camp. You can stay with them and have a surf lesson program designed for you.

Kajak or SUP to Isla Santa Catalina

If you’re interested in other water activities besides surfing, consider renting a kayak or a stand-up paddle (SUP) board and paddling to Isla Santa Catalina, a small island across from Playa Santa Catalina beach. It’s best to plan your trip in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the intense heat during the day. Fluid Adventures Panama, located on Playa Santa Catalina, offers rentals of paddle boards and kayaks.

Horseback riding on the beaches of Santa Catalina

There’s something magical about horseback riding in Santa Catalina, especially during sunrise or sunset. You can book a tour through Hotel Santa Catalina, where local farmers will take you on their horses and show you the most beautiful spots in the area. Even if you have no experience with horseback riding, this tour is suitable for you since the horses are used to many tourists riding them. Whether you prefer a peaceful ride or a gallop on the beach, you can set the pace that makes you feel comfortable.

Best restaurants in Santa Catalina

Despite Santa Catalina being a small village, there are many good restaurant options. I have tested many of them and these are my favorites.

Café Panachocolat – This is a coffee shop in the main street with the best coffee, crepes, and sandwiches.
Jammin’ Pizza’s – This is the place to go for the best pizza in Santa Catalina.
La Moncheria – This is a cozy little place with delicious homemade ice cream and iced tea.
Fonda La Arena – For good, affordable, and easy local food.
Oasis Surf Camp – On Wednesdays, there is karaoke here, and on Saturdays, there is always a fun party at the bar.

Our favorite places to stay in Santa Catalina

Bodhi Santa Catalina is definitely one of the best places to stay in the area. This social hostel has a super cozy atmosphere, and there are plenty of hammocks available to relax in. You can choose between a dorm room or a super cozy bungalow. Tiki Lodge Bar & Restaurant is an excellent option for those traveling on a small budget. The bungalows here are small but cute and offer just enough space for a mattress and mosquito net. The staff is incredibly hospitable, and the bungalows are surrounded by a beautiful garden. For those with a slightly bigger budget, Villa Coco is a fantastic choice. The cozy cottage here provides plenty of privacy, good air conditioning, and even a warm outdoor shower. The hotel has a nice pool with plenty of lounge chairs and a beautiful garden full of flowers and plants. You don’t even have to leave the hotel for good food as there’s a fantastic restaurant on-site.

The El Pianista Trail in Boquete is the ultimate hike to admire the dense jungle of Panama. During this impressive hike you make your way through the wild, dense jungle where you can see the rainforest slowly changing into a cloud forest. El Pianista Trail is also known as the most beautiful hike in Boquete and I totally agree. I’ll be happy to tell you everything you need to know so that you too can experience the El Pianista Trail at its best. Lace up your hiking boots and set out on an adventure with the El Pianista Trail in Boquete!

What does the El Pianista Trail look like?

The El Pianista Trail takes about four hours round trip and covers the same route both ways. The trail involves some uphill climbing, so it’s recommended to have a moderate level of fitness. The starting point of the El Pianista Trail is located four kilometers outside of downtown Boquete, next to Il Pianista restaurant. The first twenty minutes of the trail wind through an open meadow nestled between the mountains, and then you’ll venture into the lush jungle. Since the trail is not very crowded, you’re unlikely to encounter more than a few other hikers at a time. Overall, this trail offers a great workout and a serene escape from the bustle of Boquete.

The El Pianista Trail  takes you up about 600 meters (2,000 feet) in a few hours, allowing you to see the slow transformation of nature. The trail is not particularly challenging in terms of navigation, as the path is fairly well-defined and it’s difficult to go off course. However, the terrain can be challenging due to the high humidity and potential for rain. The trail can become muddy, so it’s important to watch your step and avoid slipping. Our guide provided us with a stick, which was a valuable tool for maintaining balance on the slippery terrain. Overall, I found the climb to be relatively easy – although it is an uphill hike, it’s a slow incline that’s not too difficult.

The cooler temperatures in the region make it challenging for many animals to thrive, so don’t expect to see a lot of wildlife during the El Pianista Trail. Instead, it’s the natural surrounding that makes this hike so memorable. The trail offers an array of breathtaking views, from the various shades of green in the leaves, plants, and trees to the awe-inspiring landscape itself. Since the trail takes you through the clouds, it can be misty and humid at times – but this only adds to the magical atmosphere, with the glimmering water droplets giving the nature a fairytale-like quality.

Do you need a guide on the El Pianista trail?

Since the tragic disappearance of two Dutch hikers, Kris and Lisanne, during the El Pianista Trail in 2014, it’s been strongly recommended to hike this trail with a guide. The memorial for Kris and Lisanne at the top of the mountain now marks the end point of the hike, as conditions beyond this point become much more dangerous. As a result, few people continue beyond the memorial. While the trail may appear straightforward on Maps.me, it’s still recommended to have a guide for added safety and peace of mind. I personally found it comforting to hike the trail with Feliciano, an experienced guide in Boquete who knows the area inside and out. Feliciano is a friendly and humorous guide who not only enjoys leading the El Pianista Trail, but also other trails in the area. He’s knowledgeable about the flora and fauna, which adds to the fascination of the trail. By hiking with a guide like Feliciano, you can experience the beauty of the El Pianista Trail with confidence and ease.

While hiring a guide for the El Pianista Trail does come at an additional cost, I found it to be well worth it. With a guide like Feliciano, you can experience the trail in a way that you might not on your own. Feliciano has a keen eye for the details of nature, and he knows how to navigate the sometimes challenging terrain. He even provides hiking sticks and fruit, which is a welcome treat during the hike.   You can contact Feliciano directly via WhatsApp at +507 66249940 to arrange a guided hike.

Tip: If you’re interested in practicing your Spanish during the hike, you can also book Feliciano’s son, Henry, as a guide. You can reach Henry via WhatsApp at +507 6848-6155.

Packing list for the El Pianista trail

Below are some essential items to bring with you on the El Pianista Trail.

  • Sturdy shoes – Good shoes are a must on this hike. They don’t necessarily have to be mountain boots, but sturdy hiking shoes with a good tread are necessary.
  • Rain jacket – A rain jacket or poncho is also highly recommended on the El Pianista Trail. In addition to the overall humidity and occasional falling drops, a (drizzling) rain shower is not uncommon. Consider also bringing a rain cover for your backpack.
  • Water –  Always bring enough water when hiking.
  • Jacket or vest –  In addition to a rain jacket, a normal vest or jacket is also nice to have. It is cooler in Boquete and during this hike, you will be gaining altitude where temperatures are lower and it can be windy on the top.
  • SnacksThis hike will take a few hours and requires physical effort. Bring some snacks such as fruit, bread, or energy bars to restore your energy.
  • Walking sticks – For this hike, it is really recommended to walk with a hiking stick. When booking Feliciano as your guide, he will bring one for you.

Our favorite places to stay in Boquete

For a truly unique overnight stay, Bambuda Castle is an excellent choice. Originally built as a castle, this beautiful accommodation has been transformed into a hotel just ten minutes from the center of Boquete. With breathtaking views and a lovely swimming pool, Bambuda Castle offers a range of accommodations to fit every budget, from cozy double rooms and bungalows to fun dorms and even a hobbit house! If you prefer to stay in the heart of Boquete, Selina is a fun and vibrant option. With a large courtyard featuring a nightly campfire, live music, and daily yoga classes, Selina offers a lively and social atmosphere. And if you’re looking for a little bit more luxury, The Inn at Palo Alto is a great choice. This hotel has a fantastic swimming pool with spectacular views of the Boquete area, as well as a jacuzzi and a gorgeous garden filled with flowers. Every morning, you’ll enjoy a delicious breakfast to start your day off right. Whether you’re seeking budget-friendly accommodations, a social atmosphere, or a luxurious escape, Boquete offers a range of options to suit every traveler’s needs.

When most people think of Panama, they immediately picture the Panama Canal – but this small Central American country has so much more to offer. A trip through Panama is a journey through diverse and vibrant landscapes, from the pristine paradise beaches to the rugged mountain terrain. You can explore the culture of the indigenous Kuna Indians on the San Blas Islands, hike through the dense jungles of Boquete, and walk the jagged mountaintops of an old volcano in El Valle de Anton. With its relatively short travel distances, Panama is a perfect destination for a tour, allowing you to experience the country’s many facets without spending hours on the road. To make the most of your trip, be sure to read all our practical tips for traveling in Panama in this article!

#1 The best time to travel to Panama

Panama has a tropical climate, making it nice and warm all year round. The country has two seasons; the dry season and the rainy season. The dry season runs from December to April and this is the best time to travel to Panama. In these months you have the best chance of clear blue skies. While rain is always a possibility in Panama, it’s simply more common during the rainy season. However, this is also what makes Panama such a lush and green country – so don’t be surprised if you experience a refreshing shower every now and then. The rainy season in Panama typically lasts from May to November, with heavy tropical showers often occurring in the late afternoon. While most of these showers are short-lived, there may be occasions when they last longer or occur more frequently. If you’re planning a trip to Panama, it’s best to avoid the months of September and October, as these are typically the wettest months of the year.

#2 This is how ATM withdrawals and payments work in Panama.

In Panama they use the US Dollar (USD). Furthermore, Panama has its own currency in the form of coins, known as the Panamanian Balboa (PAB). This currency is worth the same as the dollar and that is why you can pay with both currencies in Panama during your trip. So it is possible that you pay something in dollars and get change in Balboa coins.  It’s always a good idea to have enough cash on hand. While you can withdraw money from ATMs in many places, smaller villages like Playa Venao and Santa Catalina may not have ATM access. To avoid any issues, be sure to carry enough cash with you. In some cases, an ATM may not accept your debit card, so it’s helpful to have a credit card as well. Additionally, keep in mind that your bank may have a daily limit on ATM withdrawals, so it’s a good idea to increase your limit in advance or spread your withdrawals over multiple days. And don’t forget to set your card to work worldwide before your trip to avoid any issues. With these tips in mind, you’ll be well-prepared to make the most of your travels in Panama.

Tip: If you’re traveling to other countries in Central America after Panama, try to use up your Balboa coins. Dollars are still usable or exchangeable in many other countries in Central America.

#3 Which plug to use in Panama?

To use electronic devices in Panama, you will need a world plug with an adapter A or B, which is also compatible with North and Central America. A convenient option is to purchase a universal travel plug that allows you to connect multiple USB cables. This plug can be used worldwide and will come in handy for your future travels.

#4 Buy a prepaid SIM card

To access the internet and stay connected while traveling in Panama, we recommend that you purchase a local SIM card with data. This is especially useful if you plan to rent a car in Panama and need GPS navigation. You can easily get a prepaid SIM card from telephone shops or most supermarkets, and add credit according to your usage. For instance, +Móvil (MásMóvil) offers SIM cards with various data and day packages available. Once you have your SIM card, you can enjoy unlimited data for a set number of days at a reasonable cost. When your plan expires, you can simply recharge your credit to continue using your device.

#5 Tips voor transportation in Panama

There are two main ways to travel through Panama: taking a bus or renting a car and driving yourself. During my trip, I rented a car for the first 11 days and then used a combination of local buses and shuttles. Below, I’ll go over the pros and cons of each option.

Traveling by bus

If you’re traveling on a tight budget in Panama, Local buses are very cheap, and fares are usually less expensive than other types of transportations. Keep in mind that it may take more time to get to your destination, and you may need to transfer between buses to reach some areas, such as Playa Venao and Santa Catalina. Multiple bus transfers can be time-consuming, but it’s a cost-effective option

Traveling by shuttle bus

If you want to travel a little faster and more comfortably, there are also shuttle buses that take you from hotel to hotel between many destinations. You can usually arrange this through your accommodation and some routes you can book in advance online. This is a bit more expensive than public transport but it will save you a lot of time and effort.

Traveling by rental car

Did you know that Panama is the perfect country for a road trip? The distances are relatively short, traffic is generally quiet, and the scenery is beautiful. Renting a car offers more speed, flexibility, and independence compared to relying on buses or taxis. While it’s not the most affordable option, renting a car can be the best way to travel through Panama. However, it’s recommended that you rent a car for only part of your trip, depending on your itinerary. Check out my tips for renting a car in Panama to determine which parts of your journey would benefit from having a rental car.

#6 Tips for hiking in Panama

Panama offers many beautiful day hikes at many locations around the country. In El Valle de Anton, you can explore the stunning mountains, while Boquete takes you deep into Panama’s jungle. If you’re planning to go hiking in Panama, here are some helpful tips to keep in mind.

  • Bring good (hiking) shoes. They don’t have to be real mountain shoes, but hiking shoes with a good profile are sufficient. The paths are not always flat and in the jungle, the paths can be muddy.
  • Download the Maps.me app on your phone and download the map of Panama in advance via wifi. In this app, you can see all the hiking trails.
  • Bring a raincoat or poncho. Even in the dry season, you can sometimes be surprised by a tropical shower. The rain usually doesn’t last long, but it’s nice to be able to put on something so you’re not immediately soaked.
  • Note that it’s not equally warm everywhere in Panama. It’s a few degrees cooler and sometimes a bit breezy higher up in the mountains. So, a sweater is not unnecessary.
  • Hiking alone is not always smart. Paths can be muddy and slippery, making accidents happen easily. It’s best to go with someone or book a guide who can tell you more about the area.
  • Always bring enough water and snacks for the road.

#7 Avoid itchy bumps

Panama’s gorgeous beaches are popular with tourists, but sand flies can be a problem. These flies can cause itchy bumps and, in rare cases, transmit parasites. Although the risk of infection is low, it’s best to take precautions. Sand flies are easy to identify as small, black flies that bite until they bleed. The bites create a red spot with a dark red dot in the center, which can be irritating for several days. Insect sprays are ineffective against sand flies, but coconut oil is a cheap and effective preventive measure against bites. In the event of a bite, applying a soothing ointment like Tiger Balm or Azaron Stick can provide temporary relief from itching.

Tip: Scratching insect bites can lead to wounds that can easily become infected in tropical environments, so it’s best to be avoided. This advice also applies to mosquito bites and other types of bites.  You can get the medication cetirizine at any pharmacy, which helps reduce the itching feeling, within an hour.

#8 How tipping and bills work in Panama

In Panama, many restaurant prices are indicated without taxes. Keep in mind that when you pay, an additional 7% VAT will often be added. Tipping is not mandatory in Panama, but it is customary. You can typically leave around 10% if you are satisfied with the service.

#9 Bring a refillable bottle

In Panama, there are many refill stations available where you can easily refill your water bottle. Many accommodations and public places have refill points, which means there is no need to buy a new bottle of water each time. By bringing your own refillable bottle, you can save money and help the environment.

#10 The ultimate travel itinerary for Panama in 2 to 4 weeks

Panama is a wonderful country to travel through. Over the course of three weeks, you can experience the jungle, mountain hiking, and beautiful beaches. Wildlife sightings are also common on this trip. Our ultimate Panama travel itinerary is filled with adventures you won’t forget.

Located on Panama’s Pacific coast, there’s a tiny, trendy village called Playa Venao that’s gaining popularity fast. Here, you can surf, do yoga, relax on the beach during the day, and enjoy the upbeat beach party atmosphere at night. The local culture of Panama is not as prominent here, as the village was put on the map by an Israeli man who purchased land in 2014 and opened a successful hostel chain called Selina. Now, Selina is one of the largest hostel chains in the world and with the arrival of Selina, he put Playa Venao on the map as a laid-back destination that attracts numerous tourists. Below are some useful tips for experiencing the fun of Playa Venao!

How to get to Playa Venao?

To get to Playa Venao, you can either rent a car or take a bus. Renting a car is the easiest option, as taking a bus may require multiple transfers. If you’re interested in renting a car in Panama, check out my tips for more information. Here’s how to reach Playa Venao from various destinations:

The total journey takes about 7 hours.

What to do in Playa Venao?

There isn’t thát much to do in Playa Venao, but there are definitely a few things you shouldn’t miss!

Dancing with your feet in the sand

In the evening, you can always find a place to have fun in Playa Venao. When you chat with someone behind the bar, they can often tell you where to go that night. Enjoy a cocktail at La Barca, attend a party at Selina, or dance the night away at El Sitio. When I was at El Sitio, there was a festive atmosphere due to the unique light sculptures. It was an incredibly enjoyable and lively spot.

Surfing or taking surf lessons

Playa Venao is one of the best places to surf in Panama, for both beginners and advanced surfers. There are many accommodations located right on the beach, so you can go straight into the water in the morning from your room. You can find surf shops on every street corner, like Surf Dojo or Shokogi Surf Shop., where you can rent boards or take lessons.

Yoga & wellness in Playa Venao

In addition to surfing, wellness is also a big focus in Playa Venao. The local community values healthy living, making it a great place to attend yoga classes. You can sign up for yoga classes twice a week at Eco Venao Lodge. Selina Playa Venao and Selina Venao River also offer a variety of activities, including hula hooping, sound healings, meditations, and different types of yoga classes with ocean views. You can check the weekly schedule at each accommodation on notice boards. If you’re interested in staying at one of these accommodations, read more at the end of this article.

Hike the Cascada Trail

At Eco Venao Lodge, you can enjoy a nice hike on their own property that takes you through a waterfall and up to a viewpoint. You can purchase a map of the Cascada Trail at the reception for a small fee, as it is not available on Google Maps or Maps.me. The trail is easy and takes about an hour to complete. You can do the hike during the day as most of the route is shaded by trees. When you arrive at the waterfall, you can take a refreshing swim, and at the viewpoint, you’ll have a beautiful view of the bay of Playa Venao. Keep your eyes open, as there are three types of monkeys in the area that you may spot.

Horseback riding in Playa Venao

The beaches and forests of Playa Venao are fantastic places to go horseback riding. You can book a trip with Eco Venao Lodge that will take you through their eco projects either along the beach or through the mountains. Make sure to schedule your appointment at least one day in advance so that they can bring the horses down from the mountains for you. Another option is to go with Jaeder from Playa Venao Horse. His stable is located in Playa Venao, and he and his horses are almost always on the beach during sunset. If you want to go horseback riding with Jaeder, you can send him a message on Instagram.

Watch the sunset at El Sitio

Watching the sunset is a must-do activity in Playa Venao, as the sunsets here are absolutely stunning. The best spot to catch the sunset is at El Sitio. You can relax on a beanbag chair, swing on a swing, or watch surfers catching their last waves of the day.

Best restaurants in Playa Venao

Playa Venao has a strong focus on health, with many restaurants offering vegan and gluten-free options. After testing several eateries, here are my top picks.

Natural Venao –  Here you can create your own acai bowl with fresh fruit, nuts, and other delicious toppings.
La Palma – Here you can enjoy delicious local and international cuisine all day long.
Almendro Cafe – This restaurant is located in the Selina River Hostel. Many people believe they serve the best coffee in Playa Venao.
Sol Venao – This is a great restaurant for breakfast and lunch, with a menu full of superfood and gluten-free options.
Coleos – Here they serve a tasty mix of Mediterranean and Asian cuisine.
La Barca – This restaurant has a relaxed atmosphere and serves delicious local food.

Our favorite places to stay in Playa Venao

Selina Playa Venao is a great place to stay if you want a fun and social atmosphere. You’ll easily meet other travelers and enjoy a relaxed vibe. The location is also perfect, right on the long beach. There’s a big pool if you don’t want sandy feet. From both the pool and the yoga deck, you’ll have a fantastic view of the ocean. If you prefer a quiet boutique hostel, then Nao Venao Boutique Hostel is perfect. You’ll stay in a nice room or apartment with good air conditioning and a tasty breakfast included. Eco Venao Lodge is ideal if you want a unique stay. It’s a small tropical paradise in nature where you can enjoy your time in Playa Venao peacefully.

Bocas del Toro is a beautiful archipelago on the Caribbean coast of Panama, and it’s a great place to spend a few days relaxing, surfing, and enjoying cocktails. The islands have lots of nature and unique wildlife. Bocas Town is a small village on the main island, Isla Colón, where the houses are painted in bright colors. There are plenty of nice places to eat, and the atmosphere is friendly and Caribbean. There are many other islands to visit besides Isla Colón, and I’ll tell you about the special things I experienced on three different islands in this article.

How to get to Bocas del Toro?

Most people travel to Bocas del Toro from either Boquete or Puerto Viejo (Costa Rica). Below you can read how to travel to Bocas del Toro from these two destinations.

From Boquete to Bocas del Toro

By bus + ferry: You have two options to travel this route. With this bus + ferry combination, you can complete the journey in 4.5 hours. You can also go on your own and save some money, but then you will be traveling for at least 6.5 hours. If you still want to do this, take the bus from Boquete to David and take the bus from there to Almirante. From there, take the ferry to Bocas del Toro.

From Puerto Viejo to Bocas del Toro

By bus + ferry: If you are traveling from Puerto Viejo in Costa Rica to Bocas del Toro, you will have to cross the border. A comfortable way to travel is with this minivan + ferry combination, which takes you to Bocas del Toro in 3.5 hours. You can also go on your own and save some money, but then you will have to make frequent transfers. Take the bus from Puerto Viejo to Sixoala, which will take you to the border with Panama. Cross the border and take the bus to Almirante. For the last part, take the ferry to Bocas del Toro.

The islands of Bocas del Toro

Bocas del Toro consists of more than 200 islands, of which only a few are inhabited. During your stay, you can choose to stay on one island or sleep on one island for a few days and then a few more days on another island. With the water taxi, you can easily go to another island for a day trip. These are the three most popular islands of Bocas del Toro:

Isla Colón is the main island in Bocas del Toro, Panama. This is where you arrive from the mainland and find the lively center of Bocas Town. Despite being the largest island, it has a small downtown area but with plenty of accommodations, cozy restaurants, and bars. In the evening, you can always find a fun place to grab a drink.

Isla Solarte is a small island located just a five-minute boat ride from Bocas Town. The island is mostly covered in jungle and has a few lodges on the water, like the unique Bambuda Lodge. While there are no beaches on Isla Solarte, you can still take a swim in the sea from the lodges.

Isla Bastimentos is a beautiful island located a ten-minute boat ride away from Bocas Town. Part of this stunning island falls under the Bastimentos National Marine Park. The island is full of gorgeous beaches, mangroves, and is home to small red poison dart frogs that you can spot.

What to do in Bocas del Toro?

There is so much to do and see in Bocas del Toro that many travelers end up staying much longer than expected. I’d love to share my tips for exploring Bocas del Toro with you!

Look for fun at Aqua Lounge

In Bocas del Toro, you’ll find many accommodations and restaurants on or near the water. Aqua Lounge Hostel & Bar is one of these places, and it’s just a one-minute water taxi ride away from Bocas Town. During the day, you can relax with a drink or take a dip in the natural pool from the diving board. At night, there’s often parties with a fun atmosphere.

Cycle to Bluff Beach

A fun way to explore more of the main island, Isla Colón, is to rent a bike and ride towards Bluff Beach. You can rent bikes from many places in Bocas Town. From there, you can take a scenic route along the coastline and reach Bluff Beach in about an hour. The road to Bluff Beach is mostly a dirt road with sand and stones, but most bikes you can rent in Bocas del Toro are suitable for this terrain with wide tires and good grip, making it easy to navigate.

On the way to Bluff Beach, you’ll come across several nice food stands and bars, so it’s fun to spend an entire afternoon doing this activity. These spots are often cozy and you can take a dip in the sea at many places. However, be careful not to go too far into the water without a surfboard, as there is often a strong current.

Tip: You can rent bikes at many places in Bocas Town. If you don’t want a regular bike, you can also rent quads or e-bikes at Flying Pirates, but it will cost you more.

Party at Filthy Friday

Every Friday in Bocas del Toro, there is a big party called “Filthy Friday,” where you can visit three different islands and have fun. You can buy tickets in Bocas del Toro or online, and the ticket includes entry to the locations, water taxis, some shots, and merchandise. The party starts at the first location at 11:30 am, then a few hours later, you’ll take a water taxi to the second location, which is the most fun according to many. The tour ends with a big party at Aqua Lounge. If you’re still not ready to stop partying after that, you can go to one of the afterparties in Bocas Town, like the one at Selina Hostel.

If you think partying all day is too much, you can take a water taxi to Aqua Lounge by yourself in the late afternoon. You can pay a reduced entrance fee if you do this.

Let op: During Filthy Friday, some people take advantage of drunk tourists. Water taxi drivers may charge high prices for rides, or items may be stolen when left unattended. Make sure to be extra careful with yourself and your belongings.

Visit Starfish Beach

Let me start with the bad news: There aren’t many starfish left to see at Starfish Beach. However, it’s still one of the most beautiful beaches in Bocas del Toro with extremely clear and calm water.

To get to Starfish Beach, take the bus heading towards Boca del Drago from the main square in Bocas Town. The bus runs every half hour and the ride takes 45 minutes. From there, it’s about a 20-minute walk to Starfish Beach, which is a beautiful walk along the coast where you can see lots of colorful crabs. Starfish Beach has a great atmosphere with many local food vendors and music. Take a break halfway and enjoy a drink at Happy Life or choose a beach chair to relax and soak up the Caribbean sun.

Tip: Be sure to walk all the way past the restaurants because it’s more relaxed there and you have the best chance of seeing starfish. Remember not to touch or disturb the starfish!

Cocktail drinking at a floating bar

One of the iconic features of Bocas del Toro are the floating bars. These bars are not built on stilts or attached to the land like Aqua Lounge, but instead they float on the water and can only be reached by boat. It’s a must-visit spot to chill for an afternoon. I spent an afternoon at the Boya de Vida floating bar and highly recommend it to everyone. This cozy bar offers delicious cocktails, and the Italian owner serves a delightful tapas platter. The water around the bar is crystal clear blue, so if you get too hot, you can take a refreshing dip in the sea. It’s a perfect spot to relax and enjoy!

Surfing in Bocas del Toro

Bocas del Toro is a well-known surfing destination in Panama. The water is warm and there are good waves all year round. Experienced surfers like to go to Bluff Beach and Paunch Beach. If you’re a beginner and want to take surf lessons, you can find several surf schools in Bocas Town. They’ll take you to beaches with calmer waves.

A daytour to the paradisiacal Zapatilla islands

The Zapatilla Islands are uninhabited, full of palm trees, and surrounded by a rich underwater world. You can only visit these two paradise islands on a day tour. During the tour, you’ll visit various places, including Sloth Island, where you can spot sloths. We saw a sloth eating, which was amazing! Then you’ll head to Dolphin Bay, where you can see dolphins from the boat and go snorkeling in a beautiful place with different colored corals. You’ll also visit Zapatilla Beach, a paradise where you can relax and have lunch. The whole tour lasts about six hours and can be booked in Bocas Town.

Although all these places were beautiful, I found this tour to be too touristy and not as informative as I had hoped. The captain pointed out a few things along the way, but nothing was explained in depth. Additionally, there were too many boats at Dolphin Bay, which made the dolphins seem agitated. This might have just been a one-time occurrence, so I still wanted to mention this beautiful place in my article.

Spot red poison dart frogs at Red Frog Beach

Red Frog Beach is a beautiful, wide beach on Isla Bastimentos where you can see red poison dart frogs. You can spot the frogs in the jungle around the beach, mostly during the day, but you’ll need to look for them carefully. It takes about ten minutes by boat from Isla Colon, followed by a 15-minute walk to the beach through a scenic nature trail. The sand on Red Frog Beach is incredibly soft, and there are a few beach tents where you can get food and drinks.

Tip: It’s fun to walk from Red Frog Beach to Polo Beach. Polo Beach is a beautiful beach to relax on, and there’s a man named ‘Polo’ who lives there. You can buy a Coco Loco (a coconut with rum) from Polo, and sometimes you can eat what he’s cooking on the BBQ. It’s a fun experience!

Diving or snorkeling in Bocas del Toro

Put on your diving mask because the underwater world of Bocas del Toro is stunning. You can go snorkeling by yourself from the beach, but with a tour, you can go to the best spots for snorkeling, which are not always reachable from the beach.

Best restaurants in Bocas del Toro

I have tested a lot of restaurants and would love to share my favorites with you. All these restaurants are located in Bocas Town, unless otherwise described.

Octo – This is a cozy place where they serve delicious Caribbean food. The dishes are beautifully served with a banana leaf.
El Patio – Here you can enjoy healthy fruit and vegetable bowls, tacos, burgers, and tasty smoothies all day long.
Skully’s – This is a cozy bar and grill restaurant with tasty burgers and seafood. They regularly organize events and you can play a game of pool. Skully’s is located on Isla Colón, 5 km away from Bocas Town.
Leaf Eaters Cafe – This vegetarian restaurant serves your daily dose of vegetables. Leaf Eaters Cafe is located across from Bocas Town, on Isla Carenero, and is one minute away by boat.
Cafe Amaranto – This is a cozy spot with delicious coffee, fruit bowls, and smoothies.
Café del Mar – In this hip café, you can enjoy delicious breakfast and lunch.

Which islands to choose as a base for Bocas del Toro?

If you have some time, I suggest staying for a few nights on Isla Colón and either Isla Solarte or Isla Bastimentos. You can have fun doing different activities on Isla Colón, then relax at the tranquil and distinctive lodges on Isla Solarte or Isla Bastimentos. You can find out about the variations between these islands at the start of this article, and I’ve listed three outstanding lodgings where I’ve stayed on all three islands below.

Tip: The four major islands of Bocas del Toro are situated close to each other, and you can easily hop between them by taking a water taxi. The water taxi ride is short and inexpensive. However, the evening fares for water taxis are slightly higher than daytime fares.

Our favorite places to stay in Bocas del Toro

My best tip is to stay a few nights at Bambuda Lodge on Isla Solarte. This unique eco-lodge offers both beautiful rooms and a dormitory. It has the characteristics of a boutique hotel and the coziness of a hostel. There’s a lovely pool, a 45-meter slide that ends in the sea, and a great atmosphere. The location is amazing with plenty of flora and fauna, such as various flowers, hummingbirds, and sometimes even sloths or monkeys. Palmar Beach Lodge is also a fantastic eco-lodge located on Isla Bastimento, right on Red Frog Beach. You can choose from a variety of accommodations, including tipi tents, bungalows, luxury apartments, and dormitories. The lodge is surrounded by jungle, so you wake up to the sounds of birds and monkeys. If you also want to stay a few nights in Bocas Town on Isla Colón, Bambuda Bocas Town is a great choice. This cozy accommodation is located by the water and offers many exciting activities such as yoga and salsa lessons. Although it’s not a party accommodation, it has a pleasant atmosphere and is an excellent place to meet other travelers.

Looking for more affordable options? Selina Bocas del Toro on Isla Colón offers cheaper rooms or beds in shared dorms, and if you book early, Selina Red Frog on Bastimentos also has some budget-friendly rooms available. Keep in mind that they also have more expensive rooms, and the price you see may vary depending on availability.

El Valle de Anton, also known as El Valle, is a small mountain village located in a beautiful setting a few hours’ drive from Panama City. It is a unique place because El Valle de Anton is entirely located within the crater of an extinct volcano. The village holds a world record as the largest inhabited volcanic crater in the world. You can enjoy fantastic hiking here, and El Valle de Anton is the perfect destination if you want to explore the mountains during your trip to Panama. Because it is located higher up in the mountains, it is a few degrees cooler than, for example, Panama City, and there is often a lovely fresh breeze. Hike up to the crater rim via one of the trails for an extra magical experience during sunrise. Watching the sunrise from here may be one of the highlights of your trip to Panama.

What to do in El Valle de Anton?

You visit Valle de Anton mainly for its beautiful hikes, but there are also other fun things to do.

The Cerro La Silla hike

If there’s one hike you can’t miss in Valle de Anton, it’s the Cerro La Silla hike. This is an easy hike with an amazing view at the top. The best time to be there is either for sunrise or sunset. The mountains turn yellow-gold, creating a magical moment. There can be a strong wind, so bring something warm. The trails of the Cerro La Silla hike are clear, and there is not much elevation change. You will soon reach the crater rim where you can continue to follow the narrow path. Depending on how long you stay up there, this hike takes about two to three hours. The route is a total of 4km.
The starting point of the Cerro La Silla hike is located a bit further from the center of Valle de Anton. If you are going for the sunrise, it is nice to have a rental car to drive to the starting point. You can also arrange for a taxi through your hostel or hotel to take you to the starting point and then take the bus back to El Valle de Anton. If you are not going during the sunrise, you can walk to the starting point, which takes about an hour. You can also take the bus. This is the bus towards San Carlos or Panama, and you should hail it on the main road in El Valle de Anton. Ask the bus driver to stop at El Roble.

Admire the most beautiful butterflies at Butterfly Haven El Valle de Anton

In the center of El Valle de Anton, you will find a small and charming butterfly garden where you can enjoy admiring up to 16 different species of colorful butterflies. You will first receive a tour where you will learn all about the butterflies while they fly around you or even sit on you. You can also watch a short documentary for a few minutes that beautifully shows the transition from caterpillar to butterfly. A fun activity to alternate with hiking.

The La India Dormida hike

‘La India Dormida’ means sleeping Indian woman. This name was given because the contours of this mountain resemble a sleeping woman, with a little imagination. The La India Dormida hike is the most famous trail in El Valle de Anton and is popular to hike at sunrise. This is because you can see the sun rise from the village in the valley. The path runs through a dense jungle, so the view remains a secret during the walk up. Along the way, you will come across a number of waterfalls and when you reach the top of the mountain, you will be rewarded with a beautiful panoramic view over the valley.
From the center of El Valle de Anton, it’s about a 30-minute walk to ‘Piedra Pintada’, the huge rock with rock paintings that is seen as the starting point of the hike. Unless you are super early for the sunrise, you will pay a few dollars for the hike at this point. From this point, your journey starts and takes about an hour uphill over a path of steps, rocks, and tree roots. After reaching the top, there are two different routes to walk back. You can continue the route along the crater rim to the other end of the trail or you can walk back down through the jungle. If you have walked in the dark on the way there, it’s nice to see the waterfalls on the way back through the jungle and maybe take a refreshing dip. The total hike takes about 3.5 hours for both routes. Due to the humidity and occasional rain, this climb can be quite slippery and therefore a bit more challenging.

Tip: When you walk during sunrise or sunset, keep in mind that you’ll be walking in the dark. A headlamp is very useful as it allows you to have your hands free to walk.

Visit the 35-meter high waterfall Chorro el Macho

Chorro el Macho is a beautiful waterfall located a few kilometers from the center of El Valle de Anton. The waterfall is 35 meters high and is situated in a gorgeous piece of nature. However, a visit to Chorro el Macho is relatively expensive. You pay $5 per person for admission for a walk that lasts no longer than 15 minutes, and for this price, you are not allowed to swim in the waterfall. You have to pay extra for that. It’s a beautiful, small, but expensive piece of nature.

Tip: If you have time and want to enjoy a beautiful waterfall where you can swim and relax, go to the Pozo Azul waterfall. It’s an hour’s drive from El Valle de Anton and perfect for spending an afternoon.

Relaxing in the hotsprings of El Valle de Anton

If you want to relax after a hike, you can visit Pozos Termales in El Valle de Anton for a few dollars. There are two small hot springs and two foot baths, which are not necessarily worth your visit. The best part is that you get a small pot of clay with your admission, and you can give yourself a mineral-rich face mask. There is a large board with all the minerals in the water and clay listed. It’s nicely designed, but unfortunately, not well maintained, which makes it look a bit dirty at times.

The Cerro Cara Iguana Hike

Hike to the top of Cerro Cara Iguana and enjoy the view over the entire valley. Now you’ll understand how the crater is put together. It’s a completely different experience than the other hikes, and the view at the top is also different from the other hikes in Valle de Anton. You can hike the Cerro Cara Iguana trail all day, but it’s best to watch the sunset from the top.

From the city center, it’s about a 40-minute walk on an unpaved road to the official starting point of the hike. Although it’s a simple path, it’s quite steep. From the official starting point, the path becomes less steep. It’s a beautiful trail where you first walk through pine forests and then walk up to the crater rim via narrow paths through grassy plains. On the way back, you take the same path. The whole hike takes about two hours.

Best restaurants in El Valle de Anton

Unfortunately, there aren’t that many good restaurant options in El Valle de Anton yet. However, here are some of our favorites for now:
Volcanito’s – Here you can enjoy delicious Mexican food. It’s located a bit outside the city center.
El Valle Market – This is the local market in the center where you can buy fresh vegetables, fruits, and other groceries to cook your own meal. This is a place where many residents of El Valle de Anton come together.
L’Italia Ristorante – The menu features delicious Italian dishes.
CocoLatte – Treat yourself to a delicious smoothie or ice cream.
El Rincon Colombiano – Here you can have tasty food for a very small price.

Our favorite places to stay in El Valle de Anton

The coolest hostel in the center of El Valle de Anton is Bodhi Hostel & Lounge. There’s a great atmosphere at this hostel, and it’s easy to meet other travelers. The hostel organizes many activities, such as yoga classes and group hikes. You don’t have to search far for breakfast because it’s delicious here. Casa Grimaldo is a nice B&B in the middle of El Valle de Anton. You’ll stay in a spacious room that’s beautifully decorated, and there’s a beautiful garden with plenty of seating. The Golden Frogg Inn is perfect if you’re looking for luxury. There’s a lovely pool where you can relax after a hike. There’s also a beautiful garden full of flowers and plants that attract many birds. A delicious breakfast is included in the price.

Panama City is a metropolis that blends the old with the new. Its historic city center sits alongside a modern skyline that features towering skyscrapers. The city also has a lush green landscape, which can be enjoyed by hiking up one of its hills to take in the views of the surrounding jungle leaves. It’s an ideal starting point to explore Panama, and you can easily find enough fun things to do and places to see for a two-day visit. Here are some tips on the best things to do in Panama City.

How to get to Panama City?

For many people, Panama City is the starting point of a trip through Panama. If you are traveling overland from Costa Rica to Panama, you will probably end your journey in Panama City and most likely travel from El Valle de Anton to Panama City.

From El Valle de Anton to Panama City

By bus: There is a bus that departs every 30 minutes from El Valle de Anton and takes you to Panama City in 2.5 hours. You will be dropped off at Gran Terminal de Transporte near Albrook Mall. By rental car: This is a journey of about two hours.

Is Panama City safe or dangerous?

Unlike many other capital cities in Central America, Panama City is generally a safe city. Just like in any major city in the world, there are good and bad neighborhoods, but you won’t feel unsafe here, especially during the day. However, it is recommended to use Uber or a regular taxi after sunset if you don’t have a local SIM card. This is because good and bad neighborhoods are sometimes located close to each other, and as a traveler, you may not always know where it’s safe to walk around in the evening.

What to do in Panama City?

These are the best things to do in Panama City.

Explore Casco Viejo

San Felipe neighborhood is the heart of the old city center of Panama City, but it’s better known as Casco Viejo. Walking through this neighborhood is enjoyable because it still has an authentic colonial feel, thanks to the fact that a large part of the area is designated as a monument. This means that the old facades with their cast-iron balconies must remain as they are, while the inside can be completely renovated. The streets are adorned with beautiful murals, and you’ll find plenty of good restaurants and trendy rooftop bars. It’s a lovely contrast to walk through these old streets and have a view of the modern skyline of Panama City on the other side of the boulevard. Finish your walk with a good cup of coffee and some tasty treats from Casa Sucre Coffeehouse or one of the many other excellent cafes in Casco Viejo.

Walk along the Cinta Costera

Cinta Costera is a delightful green boulevard that stretches along the entire coastline of Panama City. Local joggers, roller skaters, and other sports enthusiasts enjoy this spot, but it’s also perfect for a relaxing stroll or bike ride with a beautiful view. Every few meters, you can find street food vendors, some even with music. You might even spot a raccoon here. The ice cream man is never far away, and the breeze provides some relief, but it’s best to avoid Cinta Costera between 11:00 and 16:00 as it can get very hot in the afternoon. Therefore, the best time for a nice walk is at sunset. The low light gives the skyline of skyscrapers a golden color that creates a magical moment.

Tip: You can rent bikes in several places in the center of Panama City. On the boulevard itself, you can also rent scooters or a fun bike trailer with a sunroof.

Tasting Ceviche at the Mercado de Marisco fish market

On the Cinta Costera boulevard, you’ll find Mercado de Marisco. It’s a fish market with a collection of small food stalls where you can enjoy freshly caught fish. You can try all sorts of fish dishes, but in my opinion, it’s the perfect place to taste a delicious fresh ceviche. If you’re not familiar with it, ceviche is a Peruvian dish made of raw fish marinated in lime, pepper, and garlic. The lime juice “cooks” the fish slightly and enhances its flavor. Be prepared for the fact that someone at every stall will try to lure you in. You can check out all the stalls first to see what you like best, but they’re all quite similar. Don’t forget to take a look inside the warehouse where they sell the fresh fish. There are bins full of fish and shellfish being cleaned by the men.

Drink a cocktail at a rooftop bar

If you’re looking for a fun place to grab a drink in Panama City, head to one of the many rooftop bars. They have a great atmosphere and offer beautiful views while you sip on a cocktail. Two popular rooftop bars are Tantalo Kitchen & Roofbar and LAZOTEA Restaurant & Rooftop. The Selina Hostel also has a lively rooftop bar with a pool, which you can visit even if you’re not staying there. On weekends, it’s usually even more fun because they often throw parties.

Wildlife spotting in Metropolitan Natural Park

Metropolitan Natural Park is known as the lungs of Panama City. This small rainforest oasis in the heart of the city is best combined with a visit to the Panama Canal since it’s located along the way. There are several short hiking trails here that introduce you to Panama’s rich flora and fauna. With a bit of luck, you can spot wildlife such as deer, agoutis, and the stubborn coatis that are anything but shy. Walking through the park, you forget that you are actually in the middle of a big city. After an hour of hiking, you’ll reach a beautiful viewpoint where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the city and nature. The Metropolitan Natural Park is open from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm and has a small entrance fee.

Tip: There is another hill in Panama City that you can climb to a viewpoint, called Ancon Hill. The route itself is less exciting as you walk up the road, but the view is equally beautiful and, in my opinion, even better for photography. If you walk to the other side of the top, you can even see a part of the Panama Canal in the distance.

Visit the world-famous Panama Canal

When you think of Panama, you naturally think of the Panama Canal, and that’s why you shouldn’t miss a visit to this impressive engineering marvel. The world’s largest cargo ships pass through these locks every day, crossing a height difference of 27 meters through multiple transition processes. The best place to see all of this up close is at the Miraflores Visitors Center, where you can learn all about the history, operation, and importance of the Panama Canal. Your entrance ticket includes two parts. There is a cinema room where you can watch an impressive IMAX 3D documentary in which Morgan Freeman tells you about the history of the Panama Canal. You can also go up to the observation deck to see the Panama Canal in action.

Tip: It is recommended to plan your visit in the morning around 8:00 am or in the afternoon after 2:00 pm, as this is when the ships pass through the canal. The staff can often tell you exactly when the next boat is coming. The film is also shown at certain times, so check which activity you want to do first so that you can be on the deck on time when the boat passes by.

Hoe does transportation work in Panama City?

Getting around Panama City is easy and affordable. You can either use the efficient metro network or go with a taxi. Uber is an excellent option, with fares often costing just a few dollars. It’s a safe way to travel, and you can check the average cost of a ride, which can be handy if you need to negotiate with a regular taxi driver. If you want internet access on the go, consider buying a local SIM card from one of the many phone shops. The metro is also a reliable and cheap option, with only one line in Panama City, making it easy to get from point A to point B.

Best restaurants in Panama City

Panama City has a variety of great restaurants where you can taste different cuisines and enjoy the atmosphere.

The Vegan Shack – A cozy little place where you can have a delicious vegan breakfast or lunch. All dishes are prepared with fruits and/or vegetables. Take a book from the bookcase and relax on the couch while enjoying your coffee or meal.
Mahalo Cocina y Jardin – A casual restaurant and bar with healthy international dishes. You sit in a lush green garden and enjoy the cozy atmosphere.
Mahalo Snack Shack – Another nice location of Mahalo where they serve slightly faster bites that are still extremely tasty.
Nomada Eatery – This is a fun restaurant with an international cuisine where you can also play games and have fun.
Casa Catedral Restaurante – For a special experience, you can visit this restaurant, located in an old cathedral. They specialize in Mediterranean fusion dishes and have some vintage cars on display. It’s also a great place to have a drink and sometimes there is live music.

Where to stay in Panama City?

Panama City is a massive city with over a million residents, and you may be wondering where the best place to stay is. The city is divided into an old and new section. Casco Viejo is the historic center and the oldest part of Panama City. This area is beautiful with its colonial buildings and being located right by the sea. It’s a lovely place to stay, but hotel prices here are much higher than in the rest of Panama City. The newer section is the business district where you’ll find many skyscrapers, and hotel prices are significantly lower here. Both Casco Viejo and the business district are safe areas to stay in Panama City. However, it’s still recommended to take a taxi after sunset when going anywhere. Below, I recommend some of the best accommodations in these neighborhoods.

Our favorite places to stay in Panama City

Bodhi Panama City is a fantastic and affordable hotel in a quiet location in Panama City. The rooms come equipped with air conditioning and comfortable beds. The hotel features a nice pool, and breakfast is included in the price. If you’re looking for a more lively and social atmosphere, Selina Casco Viejo is a great choice. The hotel has a large rooftop bar with a pool and live music in the evenings, making it an ideal place to meet other travelers. Just keep in mind that you may be able to hear the music from your room. For a more luxurious stay, Best Western is highly recommended. The hotel offers spacious and luxurious rooms, and an infinity pool on the 15th floor that provides a brilliant view of Panama City.
