Transportation for this Madeira itinerary

If you ask us, renting a car is definitely the way to go in Madeira. You can also explore the island through day tours, but they often allow limited time at attractions and restrict your freedom to go wherever you want. For our itinerary, a rental car is essential because public transportation on the island is quite limited. Curious about driving on Madeira? Read our tips for renting a car and driving in Madeira.

Choosing between a round trip or a fixed home base

Depending on your preferred travel style, you have different ways to explore Madeira. You can stay in the capital city of Funchal for the entire vacation and explore different parts of the island from there, or you can embark on a round trip where you change accommodations a few times. Both the round trip and the fixed home base have their advantages and disadvantages, which we’ll outline below.

The differences between a round trip and a fixed home base

The best way to travel depends on your preferences. In this article, we describe the itinerary for a round trip in Madeira. If you choose a fixed home base, you can use our article on the 15 most enjoyable things to do in Madeira and decide each day what you want to do. With the round trip described below, you will cover all these attractions and activities in a logical travel route.

Exploring Madeira with a round trip

  • Enjoyable variation between unique hotels

  • Less variety of restaurants
  • Requires a bit more adherence to a schedule

Exploring Madeira from Funchal

  • No need to move between hotels
  • Driving to and from visited regions every day

  • Freedom to choose which region to explore each day

If you want to read more about the places or activities, you can click on the links. To make it even easier, we also recommend centrally located hotels for each night that are convenient for the planned attractions. At the end of this article, we provide detailed descriptions of these hotels so you can learn what makes them special.

Day 1: The start of your round trip in Madeira

Here’s the start of your trip! Take it easy and book a nice hotel on beforehand, to make sure you can chill and relax after your long flight.

Unique accommodation for day 1:

Day 2: Explore the capital city of Funchal

The first full day starts with exploring Funchal, the charming capital city of Madeira. Take the cable car to the higher botanical gardens. These romantic gardens are filled with exotic plants and beautiful artworks. On your way back down, you can take the toboggan ride, a typical means of transportation in Funchal. This sled is operated by two men who often sing Portuguese songs at the top of their lungs as you glide downhill on the asphalt at full speed. A visit to the Mercados dos Lavradores fresh market is also a must, and you can end the day on a high note with a refreshing Poncha. This is a typical Madeiran drink made with passion fruit, sugarcane brandy, honey, lemon, and ice. It’s a delightful and relaxing start to your round trip in Madeira!

Day 3: Conquer the highest peaks of Madeira

After a day in Funchal, it’s time for the most impressive hike in Madeira. The PR1 trail starts at Pico do Ariero, where early birds can enjoy a spectacular sunrise, often above the clouds. From here, you’ll walk along the ridges of Madeira to the highest mountain, Pico Ruivo. Along the way, you’ll be treated to the most breathtaking views. Due to the changes in elevation, it’s a challenging workout, but you can relax by the pool for the rest of the day. Before starting the hike, make sure to read our tips for the PR1 (see link below) as there are several things you should know. It can be helpful to arrange transportation, even if you have a rental car, as the end of the hike is in a different location than the starting point. With a transfer, you don’t have to walk all the way back. So, inform yourself well in advance to fully enjoy the most beautiful hike in Madeira. If this hike seems too strenuous, you can also walk only a portion of it, visiting different viewpoints.

Attractions on day 3:

Day 4: Highlights of the South

Today, we’ll explore the literal and figurative highlights of the south. Madeira was once nicknamed the Hawaii of Europe, and you’ll see why. The steep cliffs with the azure waters below are reminiscent of the Hawaiian landscapes. The best way to experience this is by standing on the 580-meter-high (1902-feet-high) Cabo Girão Skywalk. Afterward, it’s just a short drive to Fajã dos Padres. This bay is enclosed by the same high cliffs and can only be reached by a thrilling cable car ride. Once you’re down there, you can stroll through a green oasis. The gardens are filled with vegetables and fruit trees. It’s a lovely place to have lunch and take a refreshing dip in the blue water. If you’re feeling adventurous and want to do something unique, you can also go paragliding in the south. We found it to be an amazing activity and something you shouldn’t miss in Madeira. Lastly, it’s also worth driving to the Cascata dos Anjos waterfall. This waterfall comes down onto the road, allowing you to drive through it with your car.

Day 5: Viewpoints and Waterfalls

This day begins with a drive along Madeira’s most beautiful roads. You’ll leave the south and head into the mountains towards the rugged interior. Soon, you’ll pass by Miradouro Lombo do Mouro viewpoint, where you’ll have a view of the mountains and the winding road you just traveled on. A few miles further, you’ll find another viewpoint called Bica de Cana, from where you’ll have a view of Pico Arierio, which you hiked on Day 2 (1,810 meters / 1.12 miles).

After a day without hikes, it’s time for another remarkable walk today. Levada hikes are characteristic of Madeira. A levada is an irrigation channel, and there are more than 3,000 kilometers (1864 miles) of levadas on Madeira. Some of them were built as early as the sixteenth century. Levadas meander along the rugged mountain slopes, carrying rainwater from one side of the island to the other, as it rains much more frequently in the north than in the south. These levadas form beautiful hiking trails through the mountains. The PR6 25 Fontes & Risco waterfall is a popular levada hike that features multiple waterfalls along the way. Start your day early to arrive here on time and beat the crowds. Another tactic could be to do this hike later in the afternoon when many people have already left. After a walk through the jungle, continue driving towards the east of Madeira. Check in at the next hotel and make sure you’re at Miradouro Ponta da Ladeira for the sunset. This is a magical spot to watch the sunset.

Day 6: The Beautiful Northwest of Madeira

With this travel itinerary, you’ll quickly discover that Madeira is an incredibly diverse island, partly due to its different microclimates. One of these microclimates can be experienced in Fanal Forest, where it’s misty almost all year round. This enchanting primeval forest is one of the last laurel forests in the world. The ancient laurel trees often have peculiar shapes and are covered with up to 20 different species of moss.

After a short walk through Fanal Forest, it’s time to drive towards the northern coast of Madeira. Take a moment to stop at the remarkable rock formation of Ilhéus da Ribeira da Janela and continue your route towards Seixal Beach. This dark volcanic beach is one of the few sandy beaches found in Madeira. Nearby, you can visit the Miradouro do Véu da Noiva viewpoint, where a waterfall cascades directly into the sea. The rest of the day is for relaxation. In this region, you’ll find several natural pools with infinity pools and sea views. These pools are filled with seawater. Piscinas Naturais do Seixal and Porto Monìz Natural Swimming Pools are the most beautiful ones and both worth a visit.

Highlights on Day 6:

Day 7: Explore the Jungle of Madeira

We continue the road trip along coastal roads from the north towards the west. Make a stop along the way at the traditional palheiros in Santana. It might be a bit touristy, but these cute little houses give a good glimpse into the way the locals used to live. The next stop on the itinerary is another viewpoint. This time, it’s not from a high mountain but right by the sea. Miradouro do Guindaste is the perfect spot for a picnic. Grab some delicious treats from the supermarket along the way and enjoy the view over the ocean. Afterward, embark on one of the most beautiful levada walks in Madeira. The PR9 Levada do Caldeirão Verde takes you deep into the jungle, leading to a 100-meter-high (328-feet-high) waterfall. If you didn’t know any better, you’d think you were in South America. Tropical plants grow everywhere, and you’ll encounter several tunnels along the way, so don’t forget to bring a flashlight. It’s also time to change accommodations on this day, so after the hike, check-in at the next hotel. We have two exceptional hotel recommendations for this region, which you can read more about below!

Highlights of Day 7:

Day 8: Hiking Along High Cliffs

As we near the end of the journey, we’ll slow down the pace a bit so you can return home relaxed after your tour. Start the day at the Vereda dos Balcões viewpoint and don’t forget to bring some unsalted peanuts and crush them a bit. Birds will come and eat from your hand here. If you feel like going for another hike, the Boca do Risco hike is highly recommended. It’s a fantastic coastal trail with spectacular views once again. The trail is often peaceful, making it a perfect alternative to the more popular hiking routes.

Highlights on Day 8:

Day 9: The Wild Peninsula of Madeira

This Madeira travel itinerary is almost coming to an end, but not before we explore the far eastern part of the island. Here lies the 6-kilometer-long (3.7-mile-long) peninsula of Ponta de São Lourenço. Long ago, there were multiple volcanoes here, but now only a strip of land remains. This tail-end of Madeira features a landscape that you won’t find anywhere else on the island. At first glance, it may seem like not much grows here, but there are actually 138 different plant species, 31 of which are unique to Madeira. Before embarking on a beautiful hike, it’s worth driving to the Ponta do Rosto viewpoint. Here, you’ll be treated to a view of the rocky peninsula. You’ve almost completed the entire drive and can enjoy dinner in Funchal on the last evening of the tour. Funchal is only a half-hour drive from here.

Day 10: End of your Madeira Tour

Your Madeira tour comes to an end. You have explored the entire island. If you have done everything we recommend, you have completed 5 diverse hikes, visited 8 impressive viewpoints, driven under a waterfall, swam in natural lava pools, and stayed at some of the most beautiful addresses in the Hawaii of Europe.

The Best Accommodations on this Travel Itinerary

Below, we recommend our favorite places to stay that perfectly align with this travel itinerary for Madeira. A great hotel can make your trip even more special. There is a wide range of hotels on Madeira, but due to its rapid popularity as a holiday destination, it’s necessary to book your accommodations well in advance. This is especially true if you want to stay at one of the small-scale hotels we recommend. We suggest one luxury option and one more affordable option for each region.

Recommended hotels for Day 1, 2 & 3

The Tree House Hotel is the most charming hotel in Funchal. The staff welcomes you with great hospitality, making you feel at home right away. There is an excellent restaurant with fantastic views over Funchal, as well as a lovely rooftop bar with a refreshing swimming pool. It’s ideal because the beaches in Funchal are not the best. When you step out of the hotel, you’re right in the heart of the lively city center. Unfortunately, the affordable rooms tend to book up quickly, so if you’re on a tighter budget, the Guesthouse Vila Lusitania is a great alternative. It’s located a bit further up the hill, offering a beautiful view of the city and the sea. You can choose between a comfortable double room or a fully-equipped studio. Once again, the highlight here is the swimming pool. Please note that this guesthouse is about 2.5 km away from the city center, but if you have your own car, it’s not a problem at all.

Recommended hotels for Day 3 & 4

For the next two nights, you can stay at the unique Dazkarizeh73. This hotel is decorated in Balinese style with vibrant colors, palm trees, and beautiful flowers. From the swimming pool or the jacuzzi, you can enjoy the sunset, and a delicious breakfast is served every morning. This hotel brings together the best of Madeira and Bali, along with the exceptional hospitality that comes with it. If these rooms exceed your budget, you can book a room at Dazk Golden Estate. It’s the same hotel, but they offer more affordable rooms through this link. You can still enjoy the lovely swimming pool and other facilities, but the rooms are simpler.

Recommended hotels for Day 5 & 6

Madeira Sunset Cottage is situated in a beautiful location in the west of Madeira. Perched high on a mountain, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the ocean from the infinity pool. The sunset views from here are particularly spectacular. You’ll stay in a spacious wooden chalet equipped with all the luxuries. A delicious breakfast is included in the price. This is a perfect hotel for a relaxing stay. For those on a smaller budget, the charming Casa Das Videiras is highly recommended. Located within walking distance of Seixal Beach and the natural pools, this beautiful 18th-century house offers comfortable rooms and a serene atmosphere.

Recommended hotels for Day 7, 8 & 9

Quinta da Moscadinha is a charming B&B with character, beautiful rooms, and a lovely green garden. They also have various animals on-site, including chickens, dogs, sheep, and goats. The owners will make you feel right at home and serve a delicious breakfast in the morning, including fresh eggs from their own chickens. Another unique accommodation option is Valle Paraizo. Here, you’ll have your own cottage nestled in a beautiful garden. Light up the fireplace in the evening and enjoy freshly baked bread delivered by the owner in the morning. There are only two cottages available, so early booking is recommended.

Day 10

Enjoy a good night’s sleep in your own bed! ;)

Are you curious about the sights of Madeira and what to do there? This Portuguese island is a unique piece of Europe. It is located about 700 kilometers (435 miles) west of Morocco and is a paradise on earth for nature lovers. Here you will find jungle, rugged mountains, waterfalls, volcanic beaches, and much more beauty. Madeira has many nicknames such as the Hawaii of Europe, the flower island, and the island of eternal spring. With such nicknames, you can imagine that it’s a great place to stay. You don’t come here for a beach vacation, but rather to be active and explore the many diverse attractions. We have searched the island for the most beautiful places, the most enjoyable activities, and the sights. This is our selection of the 15 most enjoyable things to do in Madeira!

What about transportation in Madeira?

If you want to see many of Madeira’s attractions, renting a car is the best and most enjoyable choice. Without a rental car, you’ll depend on tours, limited public transportation, or very expensive taxis, and as a result, you’ll simply see less of the island. A rental car gives you the freedom to go wherever you want at any time of the day. Besides, the views during the drive are often spectacular. The roads in Madeira are very good, and people drive calmly. Of course, it may take some getting used to all those tunnels, mountain roads, and slopes, but believe us, you’ll get the hang of it quickly. Before renting a car, read our tips for renting and driving a car in Madeira so you can be well-prepared for your trip.

What to do in Madeira? Tips for attractions and activities

No matter how many days you’re going, with these tips for attractions and activities, you won’t get bored easily in Madeira!

Hiking, hiking, and more hiking

At the top of the list is hiking, of course. Madeira is a volcanic island that is almost entirely mountainous. There are over 100 short and long hiking trails to choose from. One day you’ll walk along a winding path along the cliffs by the coast, the next day you’ll find yourself in the middle of the jungle under a waterfall, and yet another day you’ll be on a mountaintop high above the clouds. The diversity of Madeira is enormous, and the best way to experience it is by taking some beautiful hikes. The most famous hike is the PR1 from Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo, the highest point on the island. In the east, there is a particularly rocky natural area with high cliffs, and of course, there are the famous levada hikes where you walk along the island’s old irrigation canals through the jungle. Curious about which hikes we liked the most? Read our article about the 5 most beautiful hikes in Madeira.

Explore the charming city of Funchal, the capital of Madeira

Funchal is the capital of the island and a wonderful base for exploring the attractions of Madeira. The city center has many cozy terraces, and everywhere you’ll find beautifully landscaped parks with tropical plants, colorful flowers, and unique artworks. Visit the farmers market Mercado dos Lavradores where they sell fresh fish, vegetables, and fruits, or take the cable car to the higher area of Monte. Here you’ll find a beautiful botanical garden where you can admire Madeira’s rich flora. To come back down, you can take the traditional toboggan ride. Of course, there’s more to do in Funchal. Therefore, read all our tips for Funchal before your departure and discover the best to-do’s and attractions.

Walk on the 580-meter-high (1902-feet-high) Cabo Girão Skywalk

If you have a fear of heights, you can put yourself to the test here. The Cabo Girão Skywalk is made of glass and extends over the edge of a 580-meter-high (1902-feet-high) cliff. It’s a nice stop to enjoy the view and have a coffee. The Cabo Girão Skywalk is completely free.

Swim in the pools of Porto Monìz

In the northwest of Madeira, you’ll find the unique lava pools of Porto Monìz. Among the rock formations formed by lava, there are pools that are almost at sea level. Occasionally, a big wave brings some extra liters of seawater into the pools. Piscinas Naturais de Porto Monìz is the ideal place to enjoy the sun for an afternoon. You can choose between the paid pool, where you have more space to lay out your towel, or the free pools, which have fewer facilities but are just as beautiful. They are located next to each other, so you can take a look at both and make a choice.

Get lost in the mist of the ancient Fanal Forest

The enchanting Fanal Forest, sometimes called Laurisilva, is one of the last laurel forests in the world. Tens of millions of years ago, a large part of Southern Europe was covered by such forests, but due to the Ice Age and deforestation, almost all laurel forests have disappeared. The ancient laurel trees often have peculiar shapes and are covered in mosses and other plants. The thick mist that often hangs in Fanal creates a mystical atmosphere and makes this place even more impressive. You can find information on how to get there and what to consider in our article with tips for Fanal Forest.

Paragliding along the coast of Madeira

Paragliding is a must-do activity in Madeira. You’ll run together with Rui, a highly experienced paraglider, from the mountain until the wind picks you up and you fly along the high cliffs for about 20 minutes. This may sound a bit thrilling, but in reality, it’s quite manageable. The location depends on the weather, so it’s always a surprise. One day, you might fly above Funchal, and another time, over a banana plantation near a small village. Wherever it is, the adrenaline rush is guaranteed! Rui has been flying for over 10 years, so you’re in good hands with him. Curious about our experience? Read about our entire paragliding experience in Madeira.

Discover the most beautiful viewpoints in Madeira

You don’t always have to hike far to enjoy magnificent views in Madeira. Even along the roadside, you’ll find the most breathtaking viewpoints that will leave you speechless. Depending on their location, some viewpoints are perfect for sunrise or sunset. We’ve checked off quite a few of them and made a selection of the most beautiful viewpoints in Madeira.

Have lunch at the secluded Fajã dos Padres

One of the most remarkable attractions in Madeira is the Fajã dos Padres bay, nestled between a massive cliff wall and the ocean. This is where the origin of Malmsey wine, a typical Madeiran wine, can be found. Long ago, this piece of land was inhabited by priests who cultivated the grapes to make this wine. They lived in the remote Fajã dos Padres bay for about 150 years, but now it has been owned by a family for 4 generations who run a fantastic restaurant there and grow their own vegetables and fruits.

The easiest way to get there is through the extremely steep cable car. It’s an exciting ride of about 2.5 minutes with a spectacular view of the bay. Once you’re down, you can stroll through the plantation, swim in the crystal-clear water, and, of course, enjoy a delicious lunch. Plan to spend a leisurely afternoon if you want to fully experience this little paradise, and don’t forget to bring your swimwear and towel. The restaurant is very popular, so make sure to make a reservation if you want to have lunch there. You can make a reservation here. The menu features authentic Madeiran dishes, and most of the ingredients come from their own garden.

Admire the rock formation of Ilhéus da Ribeira da Janela

Hidden between the villages of Seixal and Porto Moniz, just off the coast, you’ll find a unique rock formation in the sea. Enormous rocks rise vertically from the water. Around the rocks, you might see around 100 swallows that have created a safe haven in the crevices of Ilhéus da Ribeira da Janela. It’s a beautiful stop if you’re in the area!

Drive through Madeira’s free car wash

Driving in Madeira is fantastic because the views make every ride a delight. Sometimes you’ll tour along the coast with enormous cliffs by your side, and other times you’ll drive on winding mountain roads high above the clouds. A unique experience in Madeira is Cascata dos Anjos, a waterfall that flows directly onto the road. Turn on your windshield wipers and brake carefully because your visibility will be limited as you drive through the waterfall. This special place is no longer a secret, so sometimes you may encounter a group of people on the road taking photos. When driving west, you’ll find parking spaces on the left side of the road just after the waterfall. It’s a beautiful spot to watch the sunset, as it colors the water bright orange.

Spot Dolphins and Whales (or Swim with Them)

Did you know that Madeira is a perfect destination for dolphin and whale watching? Here, you have a 95% chance of spotting dolphins, and if you’re lucky, you might even encounter a whale leaping out of the water. Unlike many other places in the world, the animals here are well protected, and there are strict rules for tour operators. For example, they can only spend a short time near the same group of dolphins to ensure that the animals don’t experience any stress. Here, you can observe these extraordinary creatures in their natural habitat, exhibiting their natural behavior. What’s truly unique is that you can also swim with dolphins in the wild in Madeira. Of course, you need to be lucky as the dolphins may swim away, but often they will swim curiously around the boat for a while.

Book the dolphin and whale watching tour or the swim with dolphins tour. For both tours, it’s advisable to book in advance as they often get fully booked early.

Take a Stroll on the Beautiful Seixal Beach

Madeira is not known for its fine sandy beaches as they are quite rare. However, there is one beach that you must visit, and that’s the beautiful Seixal Beach. The dark brown sand perfectly complements the green mountains, and if there has been enough rainfall, you can take a refreshing shower under the small waterfall on the beach. The sea can sometimes be rough here with strong currents, so it’s not wise to venture too far into the water. The official name you can use for navigation is Praia do Porto do Seixal.

Relax at Piscinas Naturais do Seixal

If you feel like swimming without worrying about currents, you’ll also find natural pools in Seixal. These pools are nestled among the black rocks and create an infinity pool with a view of the sea. Piscinas Naturais do Seixal is free to access.

Visit the Palheiros in Santana

Slightly less exciting than most attractions in Madeira, but still enjoyable, are the typical Madeiran houses known as Palheiros. These adorable triangular houses showcase how people used to live here in the past. Nowadays, they are a popular stop for tourists, and the houses have been transformed into shops. It’s nice to snap a photo, but you can see it all quickly. Location: Casas típicas de Santana

Our favorite places to stay in Madeira

If you want to stay in one place throughout your vacation, Funchal is the best base. This laid-back city offers many excellent hotels, delightful restaurants, and cozy bars. If you don’t mind changing locations, you can also spend a few nights in a more natural setting. One recommendation for Madeira is to choose a hotel with a swimming pool. Since Madeira has almost no sandy beaches for laying out a towel, having a hotel with a pool is really convenient if you also want to relax by the water. We went in search of the most beautiful accommodations and found 8 delightful hotels with pools where you’ll definitely want to stay for a few nights or maybe even your entire vacation!

Madeira is a perfect destination to rent a car. Renting a car in Madeira is not only very practical but also incredibly beautiful to drive around. The roads of Madeira will take you to the most beautiful places on the island. As you drive, you’ll be amazed by waterfalls, towering cliffs, and breathtaking views of mountains, valleys, and the ocean. Every corner reveals a different picturesque view. Be prepared to frequently park your car by the side of the road to soak in the surroundings. In two weeks, we explored every corner of Madeira and in this article, we’ll share all the things you should know about renting and driving a car in Madeira. Safe travels!

Why Rent a Car in Madeira?

Renting a car in Madeira provides you with the ultimate freedom to explore. You can go wherever you want and you’re not dependent on anyone else. Without a rental car, you’ll rely on tours, taxis, or public transportation to see the island. Tours and taxis can be quite expensive, and with limited public transportation, it takes much longer to get around. While it’s possible, the likelihood of seeing less of the island is high. Renting a car is, therefore, the easiest and most enjoyable transportation option in Madeira.

Driving in Madeira

Driving in Madeira is incredibly beautiful but can be challenging in certain areas. Madeira is a mountainous island, so some roads are steep and have sharp turns. Fortunately, people in Madeira generally drive very responsibly, and the roads are well-maintained. Keep in mind that fog can sometimes obscure visibility in the mountains. You might even encounter a herd of cows blocking the road. Therefore, never drive at high speeds when driving through fog. Driving in Madeira may be different from what you are used to, but it is not difficult and manageable for everyone!

Traffic Rules in Madeira

The traffic rules in Madeira are mostly similar to those you will propably already know, but with one important exception: merging onto the highway. The merging lanes are extremely short, and the merging vehicle must yield to the cars already on the road. You must come to a stop on the merging lane and only merge when there is no approaching vehicle.

From what age can you rent a car in Madeira?

The minimum age to rent a car in Madeira depends on the rental company. In most cases, it is 25 years old. If you are between 21 and 24 years old, you will need to pay an additional surcharge. You can find this information under the “specific conditions” section during the booking process.

Don’t forget: your credit card

It is mandatory to have a credit card with you when picking up the rental car. This credit card must be in the name of the main driver. Credit cards with a different name will not be accepted for the security deposit, and you will not be able to receive the rental car. Additionally, it is important that the credit card has sufficient funds for the deposit. If you don’t have a credit card yet, we recommend this credit card.

Additional tips for renting a car in Madeira

  • You need a valid driver’s license that you have possessed for at least 1 year, or sometimes even 2 years, to rent a car.
  • Pay close attention when refueling to make sure you choose the correct fuel. In Portuguese, the words for diesel and gasoline are similar. Gasolina is gasoline and gasóleo is diesel.
  • It is recommended to navigate with Google Maps in Madeira. Download the map of Madeira in advance so that you can navigate offline as well. You might lose signal when driving through a tunnel or in the mountains.

What type of car is best to rent in Madeira?

You don’t need a 4×4 in Madeira. However, an automatic transmission can be convenient. It may come at a higher cost, but it provides a bit more ease while driving. Madeira is essentially one big uphill test, and it’s nice to keep your full concentration on the road and traffic. If you are a confident driver, you may not need an automatic transmission, but if you have less experience driving abroad, an automatic can be beneficial in Madeira. If you are traveling as a couple, a small car is sufficient in Madeira. A smaller car offers more maneuverability in traffic, and it’s especially useful when parking. If you are traveling with more people, a larger car would provide more comfort.

How much does it cost to rent a car in Madeira?

When renting a car in Madeira, prices can vary depending on the season and how early you book. Booking a rental car through Rentalcars.com is highly recommended for Madeira. With a rental car, you always have a chance of damage and problems along the way, which is why it’s smart to book with a reliable party. At Rentalcars, you can always take out a Full Protection Insurance, you can change your booking for free and all conditions are clearly indicated. So you don’t have to worry about snags and if something goes wrong on your trip, everything is always reimbursed and taken care of. This is totally worth it as far as we are concerned, especially on holiday.

Note: Sometimes the local rental company will try to sell you extra insurances. These are absolutely unnecessary as everything is covered with Rentalcars’ Full Protection Insurance. So don’t be fooled because you are 100% covered, even your excess will be refunded in case of damage.

Price hikes due to shortage of cars: There is currently a huge shortage of rental cars worldwide. To survive the corona crisis, car rental companies have had to sell a large portion of their cars. Since demand is rising fast, there are not enough chips for new cars and prices are skyrocketing due to the shortage. As a result, many rental cars are double the price or even fully booked. It’s best to book as early as possible to be sure of a rental car that is still somewhat affordable. At Rentalcars.com, you can currently cancel or change your booking free of charge up to 48 hours in advance, so you are not stuck with anything but still be sure of a rental car.

Have you chosen Madeira for your next vacation? Great choice! Madeira will definitely not disappoint you as this unique part of Europe has so much beauty to offer. Now, before you embark on your journey, take a moment to read these practical tips and facts to make the most out of your vacation in Madeira. Enjoy preparing for an unforgettable time on Madeira!

#1 How many days or weeks do you need for Madeira?

Madeira is not very large, but there is so much to do and see. We recommend allocating at least 1 week for Madeira. If you plan to do a lot of hiking, see all the highlights, and still have a few days to relax, then 10 days is probably a better idea. Curious about the most beautiful places and the best activities in Madeira? Read our tips for the best things to do in Madeira. If you’d like to do a round trip and visit the most beautiful spots in Madeira in 10 days, check out our itinerary for a Madeira round trip.

#2 The weather varies across Madeira

Due to the significant differences in altitude, there are multiple microclimates on the island. The region around Funchal tends to be sunny and dry, while on the other side of the mountains, in the north, clouds often hang and rain falls more frequently. Additionally, you may find yourself driving through heavy rain in the mountains, but just about a mile further, above the clouds, the weather may be nice. Therefore, when planning activities from Funchal, it’s wise to check the weather forecast for the places you intend to visit. Although it’s not always accurate, it gives you a rough idea of what to expect. There’s almost always good weather somewhere on Madeira! We used the live webcams a lot to see where the weather was good.

Tip: Make sure to always have a raincoat with you, especially when hiking. If you’re going into the mountains, it’s also wise to have a sweater and jacket in the car. It can be much colder there than in Funchal. We were standing at an elevation of 1,818 meters (5,965 feet) on Pico do Arieiro in the middle of summer, shivering in the icy wind while wearing a windbreaker and thick sweater. A week later, we were in the same spot, but this time in a t-shirt and feeling hot. In short, the weather in Madeira can vary greatly.

#3 Book on time

If you book in advance, you can sometimes find a flight ticket for cheap. However, if you book last minute during high season like we did, you’ll likely pay much more. The price of the tickets greatly depends on the season and how far in advance you book.

#4 What is the best time to visit Madeira?

Madeira has a mild climate throughout the year and is sometimes referred to as the “island of eternal spring.” In winter, temperatures in Funchal rarely drop below 16 degrees Celsius (60.8 degrees Fahrenheit). During the summer months, temperatures hover around 26 degrees Celsius (78.8 degrees Fahrenheit). Thus, the weather on Madeira is generally pleasant for a large part of the year.

Winter: The most rainfall occurs from November to March, but there can also be weeks of nice spring weather. The winter weather can vary.
Spring: From April, temperatures rise, the sun shines more often, and the entire island blossoms. Spring is a beautiful time to visit.
Summer: June to August offers the highest chance of sunshine, with average temperatures of 26 degrees Celsius (78.8 degrees Fahrenheit). It’s perfect for hiking!
Autumn: September and October also generally have good weather on Madeira. There may be more clouds and occasional showers, but temperatures are still pleasant. After a good rain, the waterfalls are even more impressive.

#5 Good restaurants should be reserved in advance

If you’re visiting Madeira during the summer months and want to dine at highly-rated restaurants, it’s wise to make a reservation a day in advance. When we were there in August, it was necessary for many restaurants. Below is a list of our favorite restaurants in Madeira.

Indian Palace Restaurant – Enjoy delicious Indian food in Funchal. Reserve a table on the balcony if it’s still available.
Casal Da Penha – If you love seafood or a good piece of meat, this is the place to taste the best of Portuguese cuisine.
Art Food Corner – Our favorite spot in Funchal for a healthy and tasty lunch!
Prima Caju – Visit this place for great coffee, bowls, and wraps in Funchal. Also, the interior is beautiful, as seen in the right photo below.
Mundo Vegan – Indulge in super tasty dishes for both lunch and dinner, and everything is vegan.
The Old Pharmacy – Enjoy delicious dishes at a friendly price. The ambiance is lovely, and all the vegetables come from their own garden. It’s located more towards the east, so it’s ideal for a lunch on the way or dinner on the way back to Funchal.
Casa do Bolo do Caco – Bolo do Caco is a typical Madeiran bread. If you’re looking for a quick bite in the afternoon, you can get a Bolo do Caco with meat and herb butter here.

#6 It’s best to book tours in advance as well

If there are specific tours you really want to do, it’s advisable to book them in advance. We couldn’t do some tours because they were already fully booked. Below are our recommendations for exciting tours in Madeira.

#7 Where to stay in Madeira?

There are good hotels all over the island, but in our opinion, Funchal is the most enjoyable base if you want to stay in one place. Here you’ll find the most restaurants, bars, shops, and hotels, and it has a lively atmosphere. Madeira is not big, so you can easily make day trips from here with tours or your own rental car. If you want to spend a few nights outside the city, that can also be fun. If you have a rental car, it’s a good idea to plan out what you want to see and do and pin these places on Google Maps, for example. This way, you can see what is close to each other and what you can easily combine in one day. Of course, it can also be a lot of fun to do a road trip. With our itinerary for a Madeira road trip, you’ll visit the most beautiful places and stay at unique hotels along the way.

Tip: A hotel with a pool is always nice, but because Madeira has almost no sandy beaches, a hotel with a pool is extra enjoyable here. If you’re still looking for a beautiful hotel, check out our favorite hotels with pools in Madeira.

#8 Renting a car is ideal in Madeira

The best way to explore Madeira is definitely by renting a car. Taxis are expensive, and the attractions are scattered all over the island. With a rental car, you have the freedom to discover the most beautiful places. The roads are in excellent condition, and although it takes some getting used to the curves, tunnels, and mountain roads, after a few days, you won’t know any different. Without a rental car, you will be very dependent on tours and taxis, and you will most likely see much less. Curious about our experience? Read our tips for renting and driving a car in Madeira.

Madeira is known for the fantastic hikes you can experience there, and it is indeed the best way to explore the beauty and diversity of Madeira. The landscapes are rugged, and the fauna is very diverse due to the various microclimates. Choosing from over 100 hiking trails can be challenging, so we’re sharing the top 5 most beautiful hikes with you. With these diverse hikes, you will experience the diversity of Madeira while enjoying breathtaking views. Jungle, waterfalls, high cliffs, sea views, and hiking above the clouds, you can tick them all off!

These 5 hiking routes are all easily doable for anyone who is moderately fit. You don’t need any climbing experience, and the trails are well-maintained with clear signage.

Tips for Hiking in Madeira

First of all, we want to emphasize that early morning or late afternoon are the best times to go hiking. Especially during the summer months, some trails can get crowded in the afternoon. Additionally, below are some tips that may come in handy.

Best Time to Hike in Madeira

Hiking in Madeira is possible throughout the year, but between April and September, you have the highest chance of good weather. Regardless of when you go, it’s always advisable to carry a raincoat with you. The weather can change quickly, and it varies across the island. It’s also a good idea to pack some warm clothing because it can be chilly in the high mountains. A fleece jacket and windbreaker are ideal as they are lightweight. Always check the weather forecast before heading to Madeira, not only for Funchal but also for places like Pico do Arieiro.

What to Bring

Comfortable hiking shoes are highly recommended. You can also manage with sneakers, but a little extra grip won’t hurt on the sometimes slippery trails. Make sure to take a fully charged phone with you because some hikes pass through tunnels where you can’t see a thing without a flashlight. Prior to your trip, download the maps.me app and the map of Madeira so that you can always refer to it if you’re unsure which turn to take while hiking.

PR Route Markings

The official hiking trails in Madeira are marked with the letters ‘PR,’ followed by a number, such as PR1 to PR22. These are the recommended official hiking routes by Madeira. You can find all these routes here. The PR numbering simply makes it easier for travelers who cannot pronounce the Portuguese names of the hikes. There are also many unofficial hiking trails with Portuguese names that do not have PR markings.

PR9 Levada do Caldeirão Verde Hike

You can’t visit Madeira without having a levada hike on your itinerary, and the PR9 Levada do Caldeirão Verde is one of the most beautiful ones. Not sure what a levada hike is? Please read the section below. This hike is relatively easy but moderately long, taking you through the dense jungle of Madeira, passing through tunnels, and offering breathtaking viewpoints. With good weather, you can gaze down into the gorge hundreds of meters (3280.84 feet) below at certain spots. Thankfully, there are fences along the trail for safety. The levada runs alongside a rock wall that is covered in various types of moss and ferns, creating a vibrant green scenery. After walking approximately 7 kilometers (4.35 miles) on a mostly flat path, you will reach one of the highest waterfalls in Madeira. It’s a delightful spot to rest before starting the return journey.

Read our complete experience and tips for the PR9 to get a better understanding of the hike.

Distance: 13 kilometers (8.08 miles) in total
Duration: 4 to 5 hours
Elevation difference: Approximately 100 meters (328.08 feet)

What is a levada hike? Levada hikes are characteristic of Madeira. A levada is an irrigation channel, and there are over 3,000 kilometers (1864.11 miles) of levadas throughout Madeira. Some were built as early as the 16th century. Levadas wind along the rugged mountains, carrying rainwater from one side of the island to the other, as it rains much more in the north than in the south. These levadas form beautiful walking paths across the mountains.

PR8 Ponta de São Lourenço Hike

The PR8 is also a real must-do as it offers the most beautiful cliffs in Madeira. The trail traverses the hills of the narrow peninsula in the east. The hike starts at Ponta de São Lourenço and leads to the viewpoint of Ponta do Furado. From here, you can enjoy views of uninhabited islands and the blue ocean. On clear days, you can even see the neighboring island of Porto Santo. The views along the way are magnificent and completely different from many other places in Madeira. For a large part of the year, this is one of the driest areas on the island, and the vegetation takes on a beautiful golden yellow color.

During winter and spring, the grasses and other small plants turn green, creating a completely different landscape. Although it may seem like not much grows here, there are actually 138 different plant species, 31 of which are unique to Madeira. The trail is very easy to walk and not at all strenuous, except for the final stretch to the viewpoint, which involves a relatively steep climb with some high steps that can be slippery after rain.

Read our complete experience and tips for the PR8 to get a better understanding of the hike.

Distance: 7 km
Duration: 2 to 3 hours
Elevation difference: 470 meters (1541.99 feet)

PR1 Vereda do Arieiro Hike

Ready for a challenging workout? The PR1 is our favorite hike in Madeira due to its breathtaking views over the island’s highest peaks. You start at an elevation of 1,818 meters (5,965.88 feet) at Pico do Arieiro and walk from here to the highest mountain on the island, Pico Ruivo, at an elevation of 1,862 meters (6,109.91 feet). The elevation difference between these two giants may not be significant, but to reach there, you’ll have to climb and descend many stair steps. The total elevation difference adds up to around 1,650 meters (5,413.39 feet), making it a quite challenging hike. Fortunately, the views make the effort more than worthwhile.

Start this hike at sunrise because Pico do Arieiro is the best spot to witness the sunrise in Madeira. Often, you’ll find yourself above the clouds, and combined with the 360-degree view and the warm colors of the sunrise, it creates a magical experience. If this hike sounds a bit too strenuous for you, don’t worry, there are also shorter variations of this route available.

Read our complete experience and tips for the PR1 to get a better understanding of the hike.

Distance: 11 km
Duration: 6 hours
Elevation difference: 1650 meters (5413 feet)

PR6 Levada 25 Fontes & Risco Waterfall Hike

The PR6 and PR6.1 are the most popular levada hikes that you can easily combine. They are highly accessible due to the mostly flat trail and take you to two beautiful waterfalls. One waterfall is several feet high, while the other features 25 separate streams of water flowing into a pool with greenish-blue water. You might even feel like you’re somewhere in Southeast Asia. Since this hike is very popular, it’s recommended to start early to avoid crowds and large groups later in the day.

Read our complete experience and tips for the PR6 + PR6.1 to get a better understanding of the hike.

Distance: Depending on your chosen route
Duration: Depending on your chosen route
Elevation difference: Depending on your chosen route

Boca do Risco Hike

The Boca do Risco hike is a fantastic trail along the high cliffs of Madeira’s coastline. It’s an easy walk on a mostly flat path, with occasional steep drops along the way. The cliff is several hundred feet high and covered with various plant species. The green cliffs create an amazing color combination with the deep blue sea, and the breathtaking views explain why Madeira is sometimes referred to as the “Hawaii of Europe.”

Read our complete experience and tips for the Boca do Risco hike to get a better understanding of the walk.

Distance: 10 km
Duration: 3-4 hours
Elevation difference: 400 meters (1312 feet)

Experience the rugged landscapes of Madeira from a different perspective! Paragliding is an absolute must-do on Madeira for adrenaline junkies. Together with an instructor, you run off the mountain and glide effortlessly along the high cliffs. Meanwhile, you have an incredible panoramic view of the blue ocean. What a delightful sense of freedom!

What does paragliding on Madeira look like?

We went paragliding with the experienced Rui. He has 30 years of paragliding experience and offers tandem flights together with his wife, Alicia. Rui and Alicia are a fantastic couple who ensure that everything goes smoothly. You’ll take the flight with Rui, while Alicia assists with everything around it.

The location depends on the weather and is always a surprise. One day, you might fly above Funchal, and another time over a banana plantation near a small village. Alicia will contact you before the flight and provide you with the details for paragliding. If you’re paragliding as a pair, you’ll take turns flying. Rui is the only one who pilots the glider. We found it enjoyable to fly one after the other, as we could witness each other’s takeoff and landing and capture photos.

Once the location is chosen, you’ll drive with Rui and Alicia to the starting point on the mountain. You’ll be provided with a helmet, knee protectors, and a windproof jacket. Rui will give you the necessary instructions, and then it’s time to take off. You both run down the mountain until the wind lifts you up, and before you know it, you’re peacefully gliding on the thermals (warm air currents). Rui has lived on Madeira his entire life and will share interesting facts about the island during the flight. After about 15 to 20 minutes, you’ll smoothly land back on the ground, enriched with an incredible experience.

What should you bring for paragliding?

It’s important to wear long pants when you go paragliding. Also, wear sturdy closed-toe shoes, and it’s nice to have sunglasses on. You can bring a bag because you can leave it with Alicia.

How much does paragliding cost?

Most of the attractions in Madeira are free, so hopefully, you have some budget left for an exciting activity. Paragliding costs $129 and can be booked here. If you change your mind or if your travel plans change, you can cancel for free up to 24 hours in advance. Please note that the minimum weight for paragliding is 40kg (88 pound), and the maximum weight is 85kg (187 pound).

Sit back, relax, and enjoy your flight!

The mountain landscape of Madeira offers the most magnificent views. Madeira may be a small island, but the rugged mountains make it feel grand. We rented a car and set out to find the most beautiful viewpoints in Madeira. The exciting part is that each viewpoint is completely different from the others, making them all worth seeing. At one, you stand above the clouds, while at another, you gaze upon a 400-meter-high (1312-feet-high) cliff. Scroll down quickly and check out the 8 most beautiful viewpoints in Madeira!

#1 Bica da Cana Viewpoint

At the Bica da Cana viewpoint, you gaze out over the highest peaks of Madeira. The view here is amazing, especially during sunrise. The sun rises behind Pico do Arieiro, coloring the sky in vibrant shades of orange behind the mountain tops. The Bica da Cana viewpoint sits at an altitude of 1560 meters (5,118 feet), and on perfect weather conditions, you’ll find yourself above the clouds. However, if you’re unlucky, you might be surrounded by fog, obscuring your view. It’s always a gamble to see what you’ll get.

Bica da Cana is located almost in the center of Madeira. It takes about 45 minutes to drive from Funchal to the Bica da Cana parking lot. The parking area can only accommodate a few cars, but if it’s full, you can park your car alongside the road. From the parking lot, it’s a short 10-minute walk to the viewpoint.

Note: The last 10 minutes of the drive take you through an area with many rabbits. In the early morning, there are hardly any cars on the road, and the rabbits might get startled and run onto the road in panic. If you’re driving here in the dark, use high beam lights and watch out for rabbits crossing the road.

#2 Miradouro Lombo do Mouro

Just a 5-minute drive from Bica da Cana is Miradouro Lombo do Mouro, and it’s definitely worth stopping by the side of the road. Here, you have a fantastic view of perhaps the most beautiful road on Madeira. Often, there is a blanket of clouds behind this mountain, slowly rolling down and dissipating in the valley. It’s a magnificent natural spectacle.

#3 Pico do Arieiro Viewpoint

You must not leave Madeira without witnessing the sunrise at Pico do Arieiro. It’s one of the highlights of Madeira, and you definitely won’t be the only one who woke up early for this experience. Pico do Arieiro is the third highest mountain in Madeira, standing at an altitude of 1,818 meters (5,965 feet). Often, there are clouds below in the valley, so you’ll be standing above the clouds, gazing at the sunrise. It’s a magical moment! Pico do Arieiro is also the starting point for the PR1 hike, so if you plan to do the hike, it can be perfectly combined.

It takes about a 40-minute drive from Funchal to reach the parking lot at Pico do Arieiro. It can get very cold here, so make sure to bring a thick sweater and possibly a windbreaker.

#4 Miradouro Ponta da Ladeira

Ponta da Ladeira is a lesser-known viewpoint in Madeira, but it’s definitely not less beautiful. In our opinion, this place is the most stunning spot on the island to watch the sunset. The dramatic cliffs and the endless ocean create the most picturesque scenes. It’s not visited by large crowds, and we were completely alone when we were there. And that too during the sunset, in such a beautiful location!

From the parking lot, it’s about a 20-meter (65 feet) walk downhill on the left side to reach the viewpoint. Be cautious as this is not an official path, and there is a deep cliff on one side. Do not rely on the rickety fence.

#5 Vereda dos Balcões Viewpoint

To reach this viewpoint, you’ll need to take a short walk of about 10 minutes. The hike is quite easy, with a small ascent of 30 meters (98 feet) in altitude. Once you arrive at the viewpoint, you’ll feel small among the towering mountains. What’s especially delightful about Vereda dos Balcões is that there are many birds. Fresh bird feed is provided at this viewpoint every day, and the birds are accustomed to eating from people’s hands. Some birds are so comfortable that they stay perched for minutes.

Feeding Tip: The birds are familiar with the usual feed, so if you want them to perch on your hand, it’s helpful to bring something extra tasty for them, like walnuts. Break the nuts into small pieces so that the birds stay longer to eat. Only offer natural foods like nuts, seeds, or fruits, and avoid anything with sugar or salt, such as chips or nut bars. If it’s crowded, try finding a quiet spot on top of the large rock. Extend your flat hand, make sure they see the food, and be patient—they will come if they feel comfortable enough.

#6 Miradouro do Véu da Noiva

On the north coast of Madeira, you’ll find the unique viewpoint Véu da Noiva. We’ve been traveling the world for years, but we had never seen a waterfall of several feet high plunging directly into the ocean before. The rugged cliffs surrounding the waterfall offer a fantastic view. There used to be an old and dilapidated road along the cliff leading to the waterfall. Until 2008, it was possible to walk all the way to the waterfall, but due to a severe landslide near the waterfall, the road is now closed, and you can only view the waterfall from a distance. You can still see the remains of the landslide at the base of the waterfall.

#7 Ponta do Rosto

At this viewpoint, you’ll be treated to a completely different kind of view than all the previous viewpoints. Ponta do Rosto is located in the eastern part of Madeira, making it the perfect spot to witness the sunrise. Ponta do Rosto is a half-hour drive from Funchal, and you can park right next to the viewpoint. Just around the corner, you’ll find the starting point of the PR8 Ponta de São Lourenço hike, which is also a must-visit.

#8 Miradouro do Guindaste

Located in the north of Madeira is Miradouro do Guindaste, also known as Crane Viewpoint. The towering cliffs and rugged ocean make you feel tiny. This place, like many others on this list, is beautiful during sunrise. Fortunately, it’s also beautiful during the daytime, as you can appreciate the deep blue colors of the ocean and the green mountains.

Tip: If you’re here around lunchtime, there’s a huge supermarket nearby called Continente Modelo Santana. Grab a delicious lunch from there and enjoy a picnic in this amazing location.

The enchanting ancient forest of Fanal Forest, sometimes referred to as Laurisilva, is one of the last laurel forests in the world and is therefore listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Tens of millions of years ago, a large part of Southern Europe was covered with forests like these, but due to the ice age and deforestation, almost all laurel forests disappeared. The old laurel trees often have peculiar shapes and are covered with up to 20 different species of moss. The thick mist that often lingers in Fanal Forest creates a mystical atmosphere, making this place even more impressive. Read our tips for visiting the Fanal Forest here.

How to get to Fanal Forest

Fanal Forest is located high in the mountains in the west of Madeira and is easiest to reach by renting a car. From Funchal, it takes about an hour’s drive to the Fanal parking lot, and from there, you can directly enter Fanal Forest. The road to Fanal is one of the most beautiful roads in Madeira, and along the way, be sure to make a stop at the viewpoint Miradouro Lombo do Mouro. If you don’t have a rental car, you will need to book a tour as public transportation doesn’t reach this area, and taking a taxi is not recommended due to the long distance and cost involved.

The Best Time to Visit Fanal Forest

If you ask us, you’ll want to visit Fanal Forest when there’s a thick layer of mist. The thicker the mist, the better. Combined with the unique shapes of the laurel trees, it creates a truly extraordinary sight. When there’s no mist, Fanal Forest is still beautiful, but it feels somewhat less mystical. Of course, it’s difficult to know when there will be mist, but fortunately, you have a good chance for most of the year. The highest chance of mist is in the morning. If you’re in Funchal, it’s best to check if there are low or high clouds that day. If there are clouds at the mountaintops above Funchal, there’s also a high chance of mist in Fanal Forest.

Navigating Through the Thick Mist of Fanal Forest

From the parking lot, you can of course wander around randomly and get lost in the forest. That’s a good idea in itself, but it can also be helpful to check the satellite images of Fanal Forest on Google Maps here to see where the large groups of trees are located. Otherwise, you might miss a significant part of Fanal Forest because you won’t be able to gauge its size. There are also dozens of cows roaming through Fanal Forest, sometimes appearing unexpectedly in front of you. Give them space when you encounter them.

A trip to Madeira starts in the charming capital city of Funchal. This white city is located in the southern part of Madeira, the sunniest region of the island. While the north and east often experience cloudy weather, Funchal enjoys almost year-round sunshine. It’s a perfect city to indulge in delicious dining, enjoy wines on the terrace, and stroll through its lively streets. Of course, there are more things to do in Funchal, which boasts a few fantastic attractions.

Take a Cable Car to Monte

See Funchal from a different perspective! Hop on the cable car that takes you over the center of Funchal and eventually drops you off in the village of Monte. You can also reach Monte by bus or your own car, but taking the cable car is a more exciting experience. The cable car ride takes about 15 minutes due to the 560-meter (1,837 feet) altitude difference and the 3,200-meter (10,498 feet) distance. Sit back and enjoy the beautiful views of Funchal, the ocean, and the mountains from your cabin. Once you arrive in Monte, visit the most beautiful garden in Funchal, the Monte Palace Tropical Gardens. The cable car operates from 09:00 to 17:45, and here’s the location of the cable car in Funchal.

Stroll Through the Monte Palace Tropical Gardens

When you step off the cable car, you’ll find yourself at the entrance of the Monte Palace Tropical Gardens, the most beautiful gardens in Madeira. It covers a whopping 70,000 square meters (753,474 square feet) and is filled with both native and exotic flowers and plants. Not only will you be amazed by the unique vegetation, but you’ll also encounter numerous bridges, gates, and decorations in Japanese and Chinese styles. Moreover, the gardens feature a significant collection of art and a museum showcasing 1,000 Zimbabwean sculptures. Take your time to explore this beautiful place as there is so much beauty to behold!

Take the next cable car to the botanical garden

If you’re still in the mood to visit another garden after Monte Palace Tropical Gardens, hop on the cable car to Madeira Botanical Garden. The ride takes around 10 minutes. Here, you’ll find a cactus garden with giant cacti and a large flower carpet, among other attractions. We found Madeira Botanical Garden slightly less impressive than Monte Palace Tropical Gardens, but there are a greater variety of flowers to see. If you’re only planning to visit one of these two gardens, we recommend skipping this one.

Return to Funchal with the toboggan ride

Funchal is a city built on a hill. If you want to get back to Funchal from Monte, you have quite a descent ahead of you. You can take the cable car, catch a bus, or use your own car, but the most fun way to go downhill is by toboggan. A toboggan is a wooden sled with a large wicker basket on top where you can sit and slide down. The toboggan has been gliding through the streets of Funchal for many years. In the past, when there were few or no cars, the toboggan was part of Madeira’s public transportation system. It originally originated to transport fresh vegetables and fruits quickly from the plantations to the market in the city center.

A ride in the toboggan costs between $28 and $39, depending on the number of people riding. It can accommodate 2 to 3 adults, but the less weight, the faster you’ll slide down the mountain. The toboggan is pushed and steered by two “carreiros.” These men are dressed entirely in white and wear cheerful straw hats. They often sing Portuguese songs at the top of their lungs as you slide down. The soles of their boots are made of car tires, allowing them to brake effectively on the asphalt. You can get a ticket for the toboggan around the corner from Monte Palace.

Enjoy a traditional poncha drink

When visiting Madeira, you must try the local drink called poncha. Poncha is a strong alcoholic beverage made with passion fruit, sugarcane brandy, honey, lemon, and ice. You can find it in almost any cafe in Madeira, but we recommend going to Rei Da Poncha to taste this tropical drink. It’s the go-to place for poncha in Funchal. They offer a wide variety of flavors on the menu, and if you can’t decide, you can also order a poncha tasting where you get a little bit of each flavor in a shot glass. Rei Da Poncha is a very popular cafe, and during the high season, there’s often a line after 5:00 PM to get a table. If you go between 4:00 PM and 5:00 PM, there’s usually plenty of space. Keep in mind that they only accept cash as payment. Cheers!

Take a refreshing swim

If you’re in Funchal during good weather, be sure to visit one of the city’s swimming pools. Lido Pools (see photo below) is a very popular spot in Funchal and the perfect place to lounge on a sunbed and only get up for a refreshing swim. There are several pools, including a large pool and two children’s pools, all filled with seawater. Another great place to take a dip is Doca do Cavacas pools. These are natural pools by the sea, also filled with seawater.

Taste the wines of Madeira

Attention wine lovers! At Blandy’s, you can enjoy a delightful wine tasting experience and learn a lot about Madeira wines. Blandy’s is a family-owned business that has been producing wine for over 200 years. Madeira wine is made in a slightly different way than regular wines. While wines typically age best in the cellar, Madeira wine should be kept in a warm place. At Blandy’s, the wine barrels are stored in the attic.

Visit the local market

In the heart of Funchal, you’ll find the covered market called Mercados dos Lavradores. The market is filled with stalls offering a wide variety of exotic fruits. There’s also a large fish section and flower stands where the island’s most beautiful flowers are sold by women in traditional clothing. However, be cautious and just browse around the market without making any purchases. The prices at this market are ridiculously high (10 times the normal price!). If you want to buy fruit, do so at a nearby stall where it’s much cheaper. Mercados dos Lavradores is closed on Saturday afternoons and Sundays.

Extra tip: Visit the market in the morning when the stalls are still nicely stocked.

Explore the old town of Funchal

Zona Velha, the old town of Funchal, is a charming neighborhood with narrow streets and old houses. It used to be neglected and unpopular among tourists until a group of artists started a project to revitalize Zona Velha. In the street Calle de Santa Maria, you’ll find many of these artists. Every door in this street is painted with colorful artwork. The neighborhood features cute squares, beautiful houses, and terraces. Take a leisurely stroll or find a cozy terrace to relax on. Don’t forget to visit the Sé Cathedral, which was built in the 15th century and is one of the oldest structures in Madeira.

Treat Yourself at Uau Cacau Specialty Shop

If you’re a chocolate lover, this tip is for you! In Funchal, there’s a small chocolate shop called Uau Cacau. They sell bonbons with dozens of different fillings, from passion fruit to gin.

Best Restaurants in Funchal

There are plenty of options for excellent restaurants in Funchal. Here are our favorites:

Prima Caju: Delicious coffee, bowls, and wraps in Funchal.
Indian Palace Restaurant: Delightful Indian cuisine. It’s always busy, so reservations are a must.
Art Food Corner: Our favorite spot in Funchal for a healthy and tasty lunch.
Mundo Vegan: Super tasty dishes for both lunch and dinner, all vegan.
Casal Da Penha: If you love seafood or a good piece of meat, you’ll taste the best of Portuguese cuisine here.
Akua: Chef Júlio Pereira creates delicious dishes that are perfect for sharing. Unique combinations of fresh ingredients from Madeira.
Casa do Bolo do Caco: Bolo do Caco is a typical bread from Madeira. If you’re looking for a quick bite in the afternoon, you can get a Bolo do Caco with meat and herb butter here.

Our Favorite Places to Stay in Funchal

The best tip we can give is to book a hotel with a pool in Funchal, even if it’s just for a few nights. Since Madeira has few sandy beaches, having a hotel with a pool is especially enjoyable during your vacation. One of the best hotels in Funchal is the Three House Hotel. It has everything you need, including a TV with Netflix, a gym, an excellent restaurant, and fantastic views over Funchal. Plus, there’s a lovely rooftop bar with a pool. Located on the edge of the old town is the NEXT – Savoy Signature, one of the newest hotels in Funchal where you’ll definitely experience that vacation vibe. The rooms are stylish, featuring terrazzo tiles and comfortable beds. But what’s even better is the rooftop bar with a pool overlooking the sea. If you have a smaller budget but still want to stay in a hotel with a pool, the Guesthouse Vila Lusitania is the best choice in Funchal. It’s located a bit further up the hill, offering a fantastic view of the city and the sea. Please note that this guesthouse is about 2.5 km away from the city center.
