Cappadocia is located in the middle of Turkey. When you’re there, you often feel like you’re on a different planet. You won’t find the unique landscapes of Cappadocia anywhere else in the world. You’ll also get to experience the diverse Turkish cuisine and explore many remarkable attractions and activities. Curious about what to do in Cappadocia? Below, you’ll find all our tips for a fantastic trip to one of Turkey’s most beautiful regions.

Fun Fact: In English, it’s Cappadocia, but in Turkey, it’s Kapadokya. You pronounce it as ‘Kappadokja,’ and the locals will appreciate it if you say it that way too.

How Cappadocia Came to Be?

Before we share all the things to do in Cappadocia, it might be interesting to know how it came into existence. The unique landscapes of Cappadocia will even amaze the most seasoned world traveler. Millions of years ago, there were three major volcanic eruptions that covered Cappadocia with layers of lava and years of ash rain. This resulted in a combination of hard and soft rocks that were then shaped into the most extraordinary rock formations by erosion from rain and rivers. The soft rock allowed people to easily carve out caves, which is why people have been living in cave houses in Cappadocia since the Middle Ages. Nowadays, this is no longer allowed, but you can still find remnants of houses and Christian churches everywhere. The churches, in particular, are impressive, as some of them contain beautiful wall paintings and graves.

What to Do in Cappadocia?

Cappadocia offers a lot to do due to its many different attractions. If you want to do and see a lot, you should plan on spending at least three full days exploring Cappadocia. Are you curious about practical matters like the best time to visit or transportation? Then also read our practical tips for Cappadocia.

Take a Hot Air Balloon Flight

The highlight of a visit to Cappadocia is, of course, a hot air balloon flight. Every morning, about 150 hot air balloons take off, creating a magical experience against the backdrop of the unique landscapes. Unfortunately, it can be quite expensive, but a hot air balloon ride in Cappadocia is worth every dollar. Nowhere else in the world do so many balloons take off simultaneously every day. It’s a surreal feeling to be up in the sky with about 3,000 people spread across 150 balloons, all watching the sunrise. Before booking a hot air balloon ride in Cappadocia, be sure to read our tips for booking a balloon flight to ensure you book with a reliable company and make the most of your experience.

Watch the Sunrise from Lovers Hill

If your budget doesn’t allow for a hot air balloon ride, watching the sunrise from Lovers Hill is the next best thing. From here, you have a view over Swords Valley, the valley where the hot air balloons take off. With a bit of luck, they’ll fly right past you. Even if you’ve taken a hot air balloon ride, it’s still enjoyable to take some beautiful photos here and enjoy the view. To get to Lovers Hill, it’s best to walk to this location and follow the path from there towards the large Turkish flag. Don’t come by car as parking can be difficult.

Tip: This viewpoint is visited by hundreds of people every morning. If you prefer a quieter spot, this location is a good alternative. You won’t be as high up as on Lovers Hill, but you’ll still have an amazing view and can easily find a spot where no one else is.

Hiking in the Red Valley and Rose Valley

Cappadocia is a popular travel destination, but when you go hiking, you’ll hardly notice the crowds. The majority of travelers come here not to take beautiful walks. They visit the famous viewpoints, take some photos, and move on. In our opinion, this is a missed opportunity because the best way to experience the unique landscapes is by taking some short hikes. Almost all hikes go through valleys, and the Red Valley and Rose Valley are the most impressive ones. During the 2.5-hour Red and Rose Valley hike, you’ll encounter the most breathtaking views and rock formations, ending with a stunning sunset. Want to take this hike? Be sure to read our tips for the Red Valley hike before you go.

Tip: If you can’t or don’t want to do this hike but still want to watch the sunset at Red and Rose Valley, go have a drink at Crazy Ali Cafe. If you prefer to avoid the crowds, you can also bring your own drink and walk a few hundred meters (feet) further, where it’s just as beautiful.

Spot Giant Asparagus in Love Valley

Another very special valley in Cappadocia is Love Valley. When you see the photos below, you’ll quickly understand why it got its name. Somehow, rock formations have formed here that resemble, let’s say… giant asparagus. You can view this place from this popular viewpoint, but it’s more beautiful to drive down this road and stand directly in the valley among the asparagus. If you want to take a nice hike through the valley, you can follow the path through the valley to Uçhisar Castle, where you can watch the sunset. This walk takes about 1.5 hours with a gradual climb of 300 meters (984 feet). If you want to do this hike, it’s better to take a taxi to the starting point and then another taxi back to Göreme.

Watch the Sunset from Uçhisar Castle

Uçhisar Castle is one of the most beautiful viewpoints in Cappadocia. The castle has many tunnels and rooms carved into a 60-meter-high (197-feet-high) rock. Due to its height, you have a panoramic view of all of Cappadocia, making it a popular spot to watch the sunset. We found it a bit crowded at the top, so we found a quieter spot a bit lower where the view was still spectacular. At the entrance, there are stalls where you can get some dates, nuts, or a fresh juice.

Göreme Open-Air Museum

Cappadocia boasts two remarkable open-air museums where you can explore the remnants of ancient civilizations. Both places are beautiful, but they lack informative signs. The Göreme Open-Air Museum is a pilgrimage site from the 17th century, consisting of several rock-cut churches, chapels, and monasteries adorned with colorful murals. It’s a small museum that can get quite crowded, so it’s advisable to go early. You can pay for an audio tour at the entrance, and it’s worth noting that you’ll need an extra ticket for the Dark Church, which is the most beautiful church in the museum and highly recommended when you’re there.

Zelve Open-Air Museum

The Zelve Open-Air Museum is a, until now, less-known open-air museum that is much larger and quieter. There are three small valleys where you can wander for about an hour among hundreds of cave houses. If you have to choose, we would recommend going to Zelve because it’s larger, quieter, and more affordable.

Tip: On your way to the Zelve Open-Air Museum, you’ll pass Pasabag Valley, a beautiful place for a short walk. With your ticket from Pasabag Valley, you can also enter the Zelve Open-Air Museum.

Horseback Riding Amidst the Hot Air Balloons

The spectacle of hot air balloons in Cappadocia is magical, but with other tours, the massiveness is less appealing. One popular activity is horseback riding at sunset, but due to the crowds, it can feel more like being stuck in a traffic jam. The horses walk in rows of dozens and may not always appear well-cared-for. Nevertheless, horseback riding in Cappadocia can be an amazing experience, and you can avoid the mass tourism. We chose a sunrise tour with The Dalton Brothers and rode on two very healthy horses with a guide through the valley while hot air balloons took off all around us. It’s an incredible experience that we highly recommend to everyone!

Skip: Quad Biking at Sunset

We made the mistake of booking the quad biking tour at sunset. We found this tour to be terrible, as it involved being in a constant, slow-moving traffic jam with over 1000 other quads. This is not an exaggeration; these figures come from the guide. You stop for 20 minutes at a viewpoint where you can take a photo with a neglected camel, and they take a photo of you along the way, which they immediately frame and try to sell to you. All in all, this tour is not really about quad biking. In our opinion, we would recommend skipping this tour altogether.

Explore the Charming Göreme

Göreme is the most charming base for your trip to Cappadocia. You can savor the delicious Turkish cuisine at the numerous excellent restaurants and pick up fun souvenirs like colorful carpets, antique jewelry, or a vintage pair of sunglasses. A well-known photo spot is the carpet shop Galeri Ikman. Unfortunately, this shop now attracts so many people that you have to pay to take a photo there and often wait in line. We found Cappadocia Antique Culturel Collection to be a much more enjoyable place. This antique shop looks beautiful and is partially located in a cave. Everywhere you look, you’ll see antique rugs, jewelry, and sculptures. Later in this article, we’ll also share some tips for great restaurants in Göreme.

Tip: Love cats? Bring a bag of cat treats because they’ll help you make lots of new friends in Turkey!

Hiking in Pigeon Valley

Pigeon Valley is a beautiful location for a short hike that connects the villages of Göreme and Uçhisar. Along the way, you’ll encounter stunning viewpoints, and as always in Cappadocia, the landscapes are truly unique. It’s remarkable how each valley has its own rock formations. Pigeon Valley features a undulating wall of soft rock, and the valley is filled with trees and bushes, making it greener than many other places in Cappadocia. Check out our tips for the Pigeon Valley hike to see the route.

Visit the Underground City of Derinkuyu

About a 40-minute drive from Göreme, you’ll find Derinkuyu Underground City. This gigantic underground city has five floors and once housed 20,000 people and their livestock. It’s a maze of narrow corridors and spaces, some of which are located as deep as 85 meters (279 feet) underground. At the entrance, you’ll find guides who can provide you with more information about the history of this unique city for a small fee. It’s advisable to hire a guide because there are no information boards inside.

Important: If you suffer from claustrophobia, high blood pressure, or heart problems, it’s better to avoid this place.

Best Restaurants in Cappadocia (Göreme)

The Turkish cuisine is flavorful with lots of vegetables and various spices but not overly spicy. We had the pleasure of trying many restaurants in Cappadocia and have compiled a list of our favorites for you.

Omurca Art Cave Cafe – This is a very cozy place to grab a light meal or a drink. The Piyaz (Turkish bean salad) is highly recommended, and you can also enjoy smoking a water pipe here.
Topdeck – Here, you can dine in a cave, and if you’d like, you can opt for a traditional dining experience at a low table on the floor with rugs and cushions in the back. The extremely affordable mezze is delicious for sharing.
Turkish Ravioli – The perfect place to try Manti (Turkish ravioli), but be sure to also order the delicious pottery kebab.
Firin Express – If you’re looking for a quick bite, you can order various variations of pide here. Pide is a crispy piece of dough filled with tomato sauce, vegetables, and optionally meat.
Pumpkin – Here, you’ll also taste many traditional Turkish dishes at their best.
Namaste India – If you’re a fan of Indian cuisine, this is the place to be. It might not be the coziest spot, but the delicious food makes up for it.
Cafe Safak – The best coffee in Cappadocia, brewed by very hospitable people in a small cafe.

Tip: If you’d like to dine at Topdeck, Turkish Ravioli, or Pumpkin, it’s a good idea to make a reservation a few days in advance.

Our Favorite Cave Hotels in Cappadocia

In Göreme, you’ll find some fantastic hotels with rooftop terraces offering spectacular views of all of Cappadocia. Here, you can enjoy a delightful breakfast while hot air balloons float low over the hotel, and the first rays of sunlight illuminate the valley. Some of these hotels offer traditional cave rooms. Henna Hotel and Charming Cave Hotel are our favorites, but there are a few other extraordinary hotels in Cappadocia worth considering. We’ve compiled the top 5 hotels in Cappadocia for you.

Tip: To stay in the most beautiful hotels, it’s necessary to book well in advance. These hotels tend to fill up quickly, especially the affordable rooms.

How to Get to Cappadocia?

You’ll arrive in Kayseri, a large city about an hour’s drive from Cappadocia. You can also fly to Nevşehir, but that always involves a layover in Istanbul.

Renting a Car is Very Affordable and Convenient

We rented a car in Cappadocia, and we can recommend it to everyone because it offers you complete freedom. We picked up our rental car at Kayseri Airport upon arrival, which also gave us our own transportation to our hotel. Many attractions in Cappadocia are relatively close to each other, but without a rental car, you’d still need to take taxis or buses regularly. Since you can rent a car for as little as $20 per day and you only need it for a few days to explore Cappadocia, we found it ideal. We rented our car through Rentalcars because it includes a good insurance policy by default. This is recommended because driving in Turkey is a bit different from what we’re used to, and with this insurance, you won’t have to worry about anything.

Tip: Read our tips for traveling with a rental car in Turkey before your trip.

Bring Good Shoes to Cappadocia

Cappadocia is a fantastic destination for hiking. In this unique landscape, you’ll find countless hiking trails that lead you to the most beautiful places. The hiking trails are generally well-maintained, but sometimes you may need to do a bit of climbing. Therefore, pack good and sturdy shoes.

Allocate Three Full Days for Cappadocia

When planning a trip to Cappadocia, you’re probably wondering how many days you should allocate. We stayed for five full days, but in hindsight, we found it a bit too long. In our opinion, a stay of three full days is perfect. In three days, you can engage in multiple activities and go on some beautiful hikes. If you plan to do more than two hikes, then it’s better to schedule four full days. Curious about the best activities and beautiful hikes in Cappadocia? Tips for the Best Time to Visit Cappadocia

Cappadocia experiences multiple seasons. Summers are hot, and winters can be cold with the possibility of snow. Therefore, the best times to visit Cappadocia are during the spring and autumn. The months of May, June, September, and October offer perfect temperatures with clear blue skies. You can still visit Cappadocia in other months, but you’ll need to contend with either heat or cold. Hot air balloons fly year-round, weather permitting.

Not All Hot Air Balloon Flights Are the Same

If your budget allows, taking a hot air balloon ride in Cappadocia is fantastic. It’s likely to be the highlight of your trip. Every day, around 100 to 150 hot air balloons take off over Cappadocia during sunrise. There are many different companies where you can book a hot air balloon flight, and there are significant price differences. It’s essential to understand why these differences exist. If you book a cheap hot air balloon ride, you’ll probably take off slightly after sunrise. This means you’ll miss the most beautiful moment, as most hot air balloons will have already landed or be landing soon. Additionally, the cheaper balloon rides are likely to be shorter, and you may not experience significant changes in altitude during the flight. With better companies, the flight lasts about an hour, and you’ll take off before the sun rises so you can enjoy the sunrise from the air. Read our tips for hot air balloon rides in Cappadocia before booking.

Cappadocia Combines Perfectly with Istanbul

If you have a few extra vacation days, it’s a great idea to add a trip to Istanbul to your itinerary. Combining Cappadocia and Istanbul creates a perfect mix of city and nature, and you can often catch a Turkish Airlines flight from Kayseri to Istanbul for just a few tens of dollars. In Istanbul, you can visit beautiful mosques, stimulate your senses at one of the largest bazaars in the world, and enjoy the best Turkish restaurants. Curious about what else there is to do in Istanbul? Read all our tips for Istanbul.

Popular Restaurants Require Advance Reservations

Dining in Cappadocia is a delight every day. Most restaurants are authentic Turkish eateries serving delicious food. Topdeck, Turkish Ravioli, and Pumpkin are among the most popular restaurants. It’s wise to make reservations a few days in advance if you plan to dine at these establishments.

Where to Stay in Cappadocia?

It’s important to note that Cappadocia is not a single village or town but rather a region covering 800 square kilometers (308 square miles). Within this region, you’ll find various villages where you can stay, but Göreme is the most popular choice. Göreme is centrally located in Cappadocia, boasts numerous excellent restaurants, has a pleasant atmosphere, and offers a selection of enchanting hotels. Moreover, every morning, hot air balloons fly over Göreme, providing a spectacular view each day.

Book Your Hotel Well in Advance

Göreme boasts several exceptionally beautiful hotels with rooftop terraces and swimming pools that offer panoramic views of Cappadocia. These are mostly small-scale hotels with only a few affordable rooms, so it’s wise to book a room as early as possible. This way, you’ll have more choices, and the budget-friendly rooms are more likely to be available. We’ve curated a selection of the 5 most beautiful hotels in Göreme where you’re sure to have a wonderful time.

A hot air balloon ride over Cappadocia is a magical experience that should be on everyone’s bucket list. A hot air balloon ride is already special, but Cappadocia might just be the best place on Earth to do it. That’s because of the stunning landscapes and especially because here, every morning during sunrise, around 150 hot air balloons take off. Do you also want to take a hot air balloon flight in Cappadocia? Here are the things you need to consider.

What to Expect During a Hot Air Balloon Flight in Cappadocia?

To give you an idea of the experience, here’s a brief description of what a hot air balloon flight in Cappadocia looks like.

Takeoff

About an hour before sunrise, the balloon company will pick you up from your hotel in a van. It’s a short ride to the valley where the balloons are being prepared. You’ll see balloons lying on the ground, gradually inflating with the help of large fans. Once they are sufficiently filled, the burners are ignited to heat the air inside the balloons. The baskets are divided into compartments, each accommodating four people. Typically, there are 20 to 28 passengers on board. Once everyone has climbed into the basket and taken photos, it’s time to take off. The pilot ignites the burners, and soon you’ll feel the basket gently rising as the hot air balloon lifts off the ground.

The Flight and Sunrise

The direction of your flight depends entirely on the wind, but the pilot can somewhat control the direction by varying altitude to catch different wind currents. The maximum altitude is 800 meters (2600 feet), and during the flight, the pilot will try to fly both very close to the ground and at the maximum height, depending on weather conditions. At the highest point, when the burner is off, you’ll experience complete silence and have the opportunity to enjoy the magical sunrise over Cappadocia in peace. The pilot will provide information about the area during the flight, and you can ask any questions you may have about the hot air balloon. With reputable companies, they often capture 360° photos and videos that you’ll receive for free after the flight.

Landing

After approximately an hour in the air, it’s time to descend. Since there is usually very little wind in Cappadocia for most of the year, the landing is as relaxed as the takeoff. With the assistance of the ground crew, the pilot can often guide the basket to land directly onto the trailer of the support vehicle. Traditionally, champagne is served after every balloon flight, and you’ll receive a certificate from the pilot. After a short ride back to your hotel, you can enjoy breakfast and relish in the highlight of your trip to Cappadocia.

When Do Hot Air Balloons Fly in Cappadocia?

Hot air balloons in Cappadocia typically fly every day of the year, including during the winter. However, the flights are weather-dependent, and they take place at sunrise. Flying at sunrise provides the best chance for good weather and cooler temperatures. If you’ve booked a hot air balloon flight and the weather conditions are unfavorable, the balloon company will attempt to reschedule your flight for another day. If rescheduling isn’t possible due to full bookings, your availability, or prolonged bad weather, you will receive a full refund.

What Is the Cost of a Hot Air Balloon Ride in Cappadocia?

A hot air balloon ride in Cappadocia is not cheap. Prices start at around $200, but outside the winter months, you should expect to pay around $270 per person with a reputable organization. Prices can vary depending on the company and the services offered. Cheaper options might offer shorter flights, fewer ascents and descents to conserve gas, or take off slightly after sunrise when more balloons are allowed to fly. Only 100 balloons are permitted to take off before sunrise, with an additional 50 allowed to launch shortly afterward. While the cost might be steep, our advice is not to skimp on this experience and book with a reputable company.

Where Should You Book Your Hot Air Balloon Flight?

We recommend booking your hot air balloon flight with a reputable company like Discovery Balloons. They offer an excellent experience with experienced pilots, top-notch communication, and the flexibility to cancel or reschedule up to 24 hours in advance. This flexibility is especially helpful if the weather forecast predicts cloudy conditions on the day of your flight. You can adjust your date to a sunny day (if available) or cancel if you don’t want to fly in overcast weather.

Tip: If you plan to visit Cappadocia between May and September, it’s wise to book your flight well in advance as balloons can fill up quickly during the peak season.

Istanbul is often regarded by many travelers as the most exciting city in Turkey. It’s the only city in the world built on two continents, with 5% of Istanbul located in Europe and the remaining 95% in Asia. Despite its partial European location, you’ll definitely feel like you’re on a different continent during your city trip. With a population of 15 million, Istanbul is Turkey’s largest city, offering plenty to see and do. Curious about what Istanbul has to offer? In this article, you’ll find our recommendations for the top attractions, great restaurants, and charming neighborhoods to stay in Istanbul.

How to Get to Istanbul?

Chances are you’ll arrive in Istanbul by plane. It’s good to know that Istanbul has two international airports: Istanbul Airport in the northwest and Sabiha Gökçen Airport in the east. Both airports are about 40 kilometers (25 miles) away from the city center, so you’ll have a short journey ahead after your flight.

From Istanbul Airport to the City Center

Since January 2023, there’s a direct metro line (M11) from Istanbul Airport to the city center. This metro line travels at a speedy 120 km per hour. Unfortunately, the last section of this line hasn’t opened yet, and it’s scheduled for April 2023. For the final leg to your hotel, it’s easiest to order an Uber. Another option is to take a taxi directly at the airport. Before getting in, make sure the driver agrees to use the meter. If not, it’s better to find another taxi. A ride to the city center will cost around $22, with the yellow taxis being the cheapest option.

From Sabiha Gökçen Airport to the City Center

The most affordable way to travel from Sabiha Gökçen Airport to the city center is by using HAVABUS, which costs about $3 per person. It takes approximately 45 minutes, with buses running every 30 minutes between 6:30 AM and 12:30 AM. If you prefer a taxi, expect to pay around $22.

Tips for Getting Around Istanbul

Trams, subways, ferries, buses, and taxis are all ways to get around Istanbul. You can easily use Google Maps to find the best way from point A to B. Enter your destination and your current location, then click on the public transport icon. You’ll see all the options for your journey. Opt for a taxi when there’s no suitable public transport connection. There are three types of taxis in Istanbul: black, blue, and yellow. Choose the yellow taxi for a more budget-friendly option. If you prefer to order a taxi, in Istanbul, they use BiTaksi instead of Uber, and the app works the same way.

Tip: For public transportation, it’s best to get an IstanbulKart, which is the Turkish version of an Oyster card. You can top up the card at a machine, saving you money compared to buying individual tickets for each ride. It also saves you time, as ticket machines often have long lines. With the IstanbulKart, you can use the ferry, subway, tram, and buses. Moreover, one IstanbulKart can be used by multiple people. You can purchase the IstanbulKart at Istanbul Airport and at stations throughout the city.

What to Do in Istanbul?

Most people allocate two to three full days to explore Istanbul. The following attractions are must-visit places in our opinion.

Visit Hagia Sophia

We can’t start this list without mentioning Hagia Sophia, the symbol of Istanbul. Hagia Sophia is a remarkable structure where the histories of Islam and Christianity converge. It was originally built as a church between 532 and 536. When the Ottomans conquered Istanbul in 1453, it was converted into a mosque. In 1934, Hagia Sophia became a museum, and since 2020, it has been a mosque once again. There’s often a long line outside, but don’t be discouraged, as it usually moves quite quickly, and you’ll typically wait no longer than 15 to 20 minutes.

The Blue Mosque / Sultan Ahmet Mosque

The Sultan Ahmet Mosque is also known as the Blue Mosque. This impressive structure was built between 1609 and 1617 and is the only mosque in the world with six minarets. The interior is adorned with 20,000 hand-painted blue tiles. You can find this mosque directly across from Hagia Sophia.

Tip: Keep in mind that mosques are closed to visitors during prayer services and on Fridays. It’s also important to know that you must dress modestly when visiting a mosque. This means that women should be covered down to their knees and shoulders, and they should cover their hair with a scarf. Men should wear long pants and a t-shirt or sweater. Shoes must always be removed when entering a mosque.

Explore the Charming Karaköy District

Karaköy is our favorite neighborhood in Istanbul. Its mostly narrow streets are filled with cozy cafes, trendy bars, and vintage shops. Karaköy is a bit more alternative than other parts of Istanbul. You’ll see many young, modern people on the streets who feel free to be themselves here. The street Hoca Tahsin Sk. is a lively street with plenty of nice cafes and bars for a drink.

Tip: The following two attractions are located in the neighborhood next to Karaköy, so it might be convenient to visit them consecutively.

Climb the Galata Tower

The Galata Tower is one of the oldest towers in the world and one of Istanbul’s most important landmarks. The tower was originally built as a lighthouse in the 6th century and was entirely made of wood at the time. It was reconstructed in the 14th century, this time using stone. Over the centuries, it served various purposes, including as a prison, an observatory, and a lookout tower for the fire department. Today, it’s a beautiful spot to get a panoramic view of Istanbul.

Watch the Sunset from the Galata Bridge

The Galata Bridge, initially constructed entirely of wood in 1845, has been rebuilt three times since then, with the current bridge dating back to 1994. The bridge consists of two levels, and there is always a lot to see. Upstairs, you’ll find rows of fishermen, while downstairs, there are seafood restaurants. The view from the bridge is stunning, especially during sunset.

Explore Istanbul’s Most Colorful District

The vibrant Balat district is an attraction in itself. Many houses in this neighborhood are painted in cheerful colors. Along the street “Vodina Cd,” you’ll find plenty of charming cafes and shops. Velvet Cafe is a cozy vintage cafe where you can enjoy a delightful lunch. You’ll also find the rainbow staircase, often seen on Instagram, in Balat. Be prepared for crowds here as everyone wants to take a photo. To avoid the crowds, head out early. Then, take the stairs to the famous photo spot of the colorful old houses in Balat.

The Shoe Polisher Scam: Throughout Istanbul, you’ll encounter shoe polishers, and some of them try to scam tourists all day long. They “accidentally” drop their shoe brush right in front of you. Once you pick it up and return it, they will proceed to polish your shoe as a thank-you gesture. However, they will then demand an extremely high fee for their service. If you refuse to pay, they may become aggressive, and multiple shoe polishers might suddenly surround you to make sure you pay the amount. So, never pick up a brush in Istanbul!

Süleymaniye Mosque

This mosque is incredibly large and towers above the city. It was constructed between 1550 and 1557 and is one of the largest mosques in Istanbul. You can take a look inside, which is definitely worth it due to the rich decorations and beautiful architectural style.

Ortakoy Mosque

A beautiful mosque to admire from the outside is the Ortakoy Mosque. This is a lovely small mosque in a unique location, right by the water next to the famous Bosphorus Bridge. Perfect for taking beautiful photos!

Awaken Your Senses at Istanbul’s Bazaars

If there’s anywhere in Istanbul where you’ll feel like you’re (almost) on another continent, it’s the bazaars. The Grand Bazaar is one of the largest covered markets in the world, and it’s truly gigantic. It comprises 58 streets, 4,000 shops, and sees a daily footfall of between 250,000 and 400,000 shoppers. You can find everything here, from jewelry and lamps to carpets, leather jackets, and small souvenirs. Haggling is definitely a part of the experience here.

A bit further away lies the Egyptian Bazaar. This bazaar is smaller and specializes in spices, dried fruits, nuts, and other delicacies. It’s a great place to sample new flavors and pick up something for your home kitchen.

Admire the Ancient Topkapi Palace

The Topkapi Palace was the center of the Ottoman Empire for many years. It served various ruling sultans of the Ottoman Empire, and during a visit, you can see that they enjoyed a lavish lifestyle here. The palace is incredibly large and extravagantly decorated from top to bottom. It included a library, a hospital, stables, a harem with over 400 rooms, 8 hammams, 2 mosques, and numerous beautiful gardens, among other things. The construction of the Topkapi Palace began in 1459 under the leadership of Sultan Mehmet II, and many other sultans lived here in the years that followed.

Explore the Underground Basilica Cistern

The Basilica Cistern is an underground water reservoir dating back to the 6th century, built by the Byzantines. The cistern has a capacity of approximately 80.000 cubic meters (2825173 cubic feet). What’s remarkable about this place is that it is still in excellent condition. That’s because it went unused for centuries after the Ottomans conquered Istanbul and established their own water supply systems. In the 16th century, the reservoir was rediscovered by a Dutch traveler who came to Istanbul to study Byzantine ruins.

Despite the interesting history of the Basilica Cistern, our visit was a bit disappointing. It was incredibly crowded inside, with limited space to move around, and there was hardly any information available to read. The experience could be much better if you arrive right at opening time or just before closing time. It’s recommended to purchase tickets in advance with a guided tour. This allows you to join a shorter line, avoiding the long wait in the sun, and you’ll get the background information that makes it more interesting.

Tip: After your visit, take a stroll along Yerebatan Street, as it’s a charming street with colorful houses. Head to Maya’s Corner for a delicious cup of coffee or fresh juice.

Best Restaurants in Istanbul

You won’t have to search far for good restaurants in Istanbul. We’ve dined at many restaurants in Istanbul, and these are our favorites.

Journey – This is a cozy restaurant with an extensive menu for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The halloumi sandwich is highly recommended!

Sirinfirin Bakery – At this authentic bakery, you can enjoy delicious breakfast, lunch, or sweet treats. Sirinfirin Bakery is located on a charming street near the Galata Tower.

Galata Kitchen – Dining at Galata Kitchen is a bit different from other restaurants. Here, there’s no menu, but rather a buffet with a variety of dishes. You can choose several tasty dishes and decide whether you want a large or small portion of each. They offer both meat and vegetarian dishes, all prepared with plenty of vegetables. It’s a fun way to share and taste different flavors.

Falafel Koy – In this tiny and very basic establishment, you can enjoy the tastiest falafel for less than $3. Perfect for a quick bite, and it’s located in a charming shopping street.

Tip: In the street of Journey, you’ll find many nice bars to enjoy an evening drink on the terrace. During the day, be sure to stop by this cat shelter just around the corner from Journey. This is run by a kind man who cares for stray cats. It’s a wonderful initiative to support.

Where to Stay in Istanbul?

Istanbul is an incredibly large city, so it’s nice to stay in a lively neighborhood with plenty of restaurants and bars nearby. We stayed in Karaköy, which was perfect for us. The atmosphere is great, and this neighborhood is centrally located with easy access to many Istanbul attractions. On weekends, the area really comes to life, and you can enjoy a night out. Right next to Karaköy is the Galata district, which is also a great location to stay. Below, we recommend some lovely places to stay in these neighborhoods. If you want to learn more about these neighborhoods, read our article on the best neighborhoods in Istanbul + hotel tips.

Our Favorite Places to Stay in Istanbul

In the coziest street of Karaköy, you’ll find Casa Rosa Suites. When you step out of the hotel, you’re right in the middle of charming terraces. Casa Rosa Suites is a small-scale hotel with very friendly owners. The rooms are beautifully decorated, equipped with air conditioning, and feature super comfortable beds. Also, Ferman Port Hotel is a delightful choice in the Karaköy district. The high ceilings, beautiful interior, and rooftop terrace with a view of Istanbul make this hotel a joy to stay in. Each morning, you can enjoy a tasty breakfast and a fantastic view on the rooftop terrace. In the Galata district, Doruk Palas Hotel is an excellent choice. Book a room with a sea view, and you’ll be treated to a fantastic view every morning when you open the curtains. The hotel has a very friendly atmosphere, thanks to the lovely staff and the cutest staff member, Osman the cat!

Cappadocia is an incredible destination for short hikes. The unique rock landscapes of Cappadocia were formed millions of years ago by three volcanic eruptions. The trails through these bizarre landscapes take you to some of the most beautiful places that you’ll hardly have to share with anyone. We did an amazing hike through the Rose and Red Valley. You walk through a canyon, pass by old cave churches, and enjoy beautiful viewpoints. Check out our tips and hiking route for the Red Valley hike!

The hiking route through Rose & Red Valley

There are a lot of hiking trails in the Rose & Red Valley, which can be a bit confusing at times. We spent a long time researching the hiking route in advance and eventually made a beautiful hike that we would like to share with you. The hiking trails are not very well marked, so make sure to have the map on your phone with you while hiking. We saved our hiking route in Komoot, which allows you to navigate offline.

In Komoot, it is indicated that the hike takes 1 hour and 15 minutes. However, this is not entirely accurate. If you walk briskly, it will take you about 2 hours. Allow 2.5 hours if you want to take it easy. Start the hike about 3 hours before sunset because the trail ends at a spectacular viewpoint where you can watch the sunset.

Explanation for using the Komoot app for free: You don’t have to pay to save this route for offline use. Download the Komoot app > click on the link to our route above > click on Save in the lower left corner > check Save for offline use > then click on Save again. To follow the route later during your trip, open the app > click on Profile at the bottom > under Tours, you will find Planned and your saved routes > open the downloaded route > click on the map. Do not click on the green button ‘start navigation’ because that feature is paid. Now you can see the entire route and your own location with a directional pointer, making it easy to find your way.

What does the Red Valley hike look like?

The hiking route is a loop, and the landscape constantly changes. We weren’t entirely sure where Rose Valley starts and where Red Valley begins, but it doesn’t really matter. At the beginning of the hike, the southern route takes you through a canyon. Occasionally, you’ll pass through a short tunnel and have to descend via a staircase. The end of the southern route is a flat path that is a bit less exciting. Right in the middle, you’ll find a simple cafe where you can have a drink.

The second part of the hike, the northern route, takes you to a higher part of the canyon. Now you’re no longer walking through the canyon but have a view of it. You’ll pass by a few ancient churches in the rocks. The church with the small cafe next to it is a beautiful church to explore from the inside. Here you’ll find ancient murals that are still well-preserved. Order a delicious fresh orange juice at the cafe and enjoy the view.

Afterward, you’ll start the last part of the Red Valley hike. The view becomes even more beautiful, and you can see for miles over the Cappadocian landscape. Find a nice spot a few hundred meters (feet) before the endpoint to watch the sunset. The rocks turn really red and pink during the sunset, so it’s highly recommended to do this hike in the late afternoon.

What to bring with you?

  • Hat or cap
  • Sunscreen
  • Jacket for when it gets cooler during the sunset
  • Good shoes
  • At least 1 liter of water per person
  • Snacks
  • Phone with a full battery with our route on Komoot

In the heart of Cappadocia, between the villages of Göreme and Uçhisar, lies the Pigeon Valley. This is a beautiful valley where you can take a nice short hike. From Göreme, you can easily enter the valley and immediately enjoy the silence and beauty of nature. The Pigeon Valley is not a crowded place, and we hardly encountered any other people among the impressive rock formations. However, we did have some lovely company from two friendly four-legged friends who enthusiastically joined us along the route. In this article, we’ll share our hiking route and tips for the Pigeon Valley hike in Cappadocia!

Fun fact: The Pigeon Valley has had the same residents for centuries, namely, pigeons. Many pigeon houses were built in the rock formations centuries ago by the residents of Cappadocia. The pigeon droppings were used as fertilizer, which helped improve crop yields.

The Hiking Route through Pigeon Valley

There are many different hiking paths through Pigeon Valley, and when you look at the map, it can be challenging to choose a route. Before our trip, we did some research and found a beautiful route. Unfortunately, it’s not possible to complete a circular hike, so you’ll have to walk back the same way you came. Alternatively, you can walk only the one-way route and take a taxi or bus from Uçhisar to Göreme or vice versa. The hike through Pigeon Valley is most beautiful in the first hours after sunrise, so it’s recommended to start early in the morning.

We’ve shared our hiking route on Komoot. When you open the route, you’ll see that it takes a different path near Göreme. This is a nice part to include in your hike as it takes you through the farmland. The path is a dead-end, so you’ll need to walk back afterward.

Explanation for using the Komoot app for free: You don’t need to pay to save this route for offline use. Download the Komoot app > click on the link to our route above > tap on “Save” at the bottom left > check the box “Save for offline use” > then tap “Save” again. To follow the route during your trip, open the app > tap on “Profile” at the bottom > under “Tours,” you’ll find “Planned,” where your saved routes are > open the downloaded route > tap on the map. Do not click on the green “Start navigation” button, as that function is paid. Now, you’ll see the entire route along with your current location and a directional guide to help you easily find your way.

What Does the Pigeon Valley Hike Look Like?

The hike through Pigeon Valley is very easy and not strenuous. If you walk both ways, you probably won’t need more than 2 hours. There’s almost no elevation difference, and the hiking paths are well-maintained. Pigeon Valley is perhaps the greenest spot in Cappadocia, thanks to the numerous trees and shrubs. You’ll walk through a small canyon for most of the way, with the last part ascending to climb out of it. Along the route, you’ll encounter several viewpoints offering breathtaking views of the massive rocks with their beautiful shapes and lines, sculpted by erosion. Keep an eye out for hidden caves as you hike.

The post Tips for Renting a Car in Turkey appeared first on TRAVELREBELS.

Renting a car gives you the freedom to explore, and in a country as vast as Turkey, it’s the ideal mode of transportation. If you’re considering renting a car in Turkey, you might be wondering about the safety of driving there or the approximate cost of renting a car. Here, we’ll answer all the questions you have when it comes to renting a car in Turkey. With these tips, you’ll be well-prepared and able to start your journey around Turkey with peace of mind.

Is Renting a Car in Turkey Safe?

Driving in Turkey is different from driving elsewhere, and you’ll notice this as soon as you hit the road with your rental car. It’s not that everyone drives recklessly, but traffic rules in Turkey are generally less strictly followed. Advisory speed limits, lanes, and solid lines are present but often ignored by most people. We’ve experienced aggressive driving behavior in many Asian countries, but we didn’t encounter this in Turkey. Instead, it’s more about people not paying much attention to other road users and sometimes doing unexpected things. Drivers can suddenly slow down, make unplanned turns without signaling, or stop in the middle of the road. Renting a car in Turkey is a bit different, but we wouldn’t describe it as dangerous. Just stay alert and expect the unexpected, and you’ll be fine.

Tip: In Turkey, the safest place on the road is often the middle lane. In some countries, the right lane is the safest, but in Turkey, the right lane tends to have more unexpected events like slow-moving cars, scooters, or someone reversing a short distance.

Traffic Rules in Turkey

Most of the traffic rules and right-of-way rules are similar to those elsewhere, and the road signs are also quite similar. Stop signs are labeled “DUR” instead of “STOP” in Turkey. Another sign to remember when renting a car in Turkey is “Tek Yön,” which indicates a one-way road. Parking is allowed only on the right side of the road and is prohibited at signs that say “Park Yapilmaz” (no parking). Speed limits are well marked with signs, but in case you don’t see any, you can assume the following maximum speeds for passenger cars:

  • 50 km/h (31 mph) Within urban areas
  • 90 km/h (56 mph) Outside urban areas
  • 110 km/h (68 mph) Roads with separated lanes
  • 120 km/h (75 mph) Highways

International Driver’s License: Check if you need an international driver’s license to rent a car in Turkey before you go. You can check this online.

What Are the Roads Like in Turkey?

If you’re planning to rent a car in Turkey, you’re probably curious about the road conditions. Unfortunately, it’s challenging to give a straightforward answer because Turkey is a vast country with significant regional differences. Throughout the country, you’ll find highways that are generally in good condition. Even the roads in most cities are modern and well-maintained. However, Turkey also has many mountain roads, small villages, and remote areas. In these areas, you may encounter roads full of potholes or unpaved roads. If you plan to explore the mountains, having a 4×4 vehicle might be handy, but for most road trips in Turkey, a regular passenger car will do just fine.

Tip: When picking up your rental car in Turkey, always take photos of the rental car and carefully check if all existing damage is indicated on the form. This way, you can avoid disputes when returning your rental car.

Important: Don’t forget your credit card

It’s important to bring a credit card that is in the name of the primary driver, as this is necessary for the deposit. A credit card in a different name will not be accepted. If you cannot show a credit card in the name of the primary driver or if this credit card does not have sufficient balance for the deposit, you will not be able to receive the rental car. Don’t have a credit card yet? We recommend this credit card.

Additional tips for renting a car in Turkey

Here are some useful things to keep in mind when renting a car.

Bring cash for toll roads

Make sure you always have cash with you for toll roads, as not all places in Turkey accept your debit card.

Download the map in Google Maps

When renting a car in Turkey, you don’t need to reserve a separate navigation system. Google Maps works perfectly in Turkey, and you can download the map in the app before your trip. Then, you can navigate offline in Turkey. Your co-pilot can assist with navigation, or if you prefer to navigate yourself, you can bring a phone holder.

From what age can you rent a car in Turkey?

You can rent a car in Turkey from the age of 18, provided you have held your driver’s license for at least 1 year. However, this age requirement may vary by rental provider, and some may require a minimum age of 21. These conditions are always clearly described during the booking process under the heading specific rental car terms.

What does it cost to rent a car in Turkey?

When renting a car in Turkey, prices can vary depending on the season and how early you book. Booking a rental car through Rentalcars.com is highly recommended for Turkey. With a rental car, you always have a chance of damage and problems along the way, which is why it’s smart to book with a reliable party. At Rentalcars, you can always take out a Full Protection Insurance, you can change your booking for free and all conditions are clearly indicated. So you don’t have to worry about snags and if something goes wrong on your trip, everything is always reimbursed and taken care of. This is totally worth it as far as we are concerned, especially on holiday.

Note: Sometimes the local rental company will try to sell you extra insurances. These are absolutely unnecessary as everything is covered with Rentalcars’ Full Protection Insurance. So don’t be fooled because you are 100% covered, even your excess will be refunded in case of damage.

Price hikes due to shortage of cars: There is currently a huge shortage of rental cars worldwide. To survive the corona crisis, car rental companies have had to sell a large portion of their cars. Since demand is rising fast, there are not enough chips for new cars and prices are skyrocketing due to the shortage. As a result, many rental cars are double the price or even fully booked. It’s best to book as early as possible to be sure of a rental car that is still somewhat affordable. At Rentalcars.com, you can currently cancel or change your booking free of charge up to 48 hours in advance, so you are not stuck with anything but still be sure of a rental car.
