The El Pianista Trail in Boquete is the ultimate hike to admire the dense jungle of Panama. During this impressive hike you make your way through the wild, dense jungle where you can see the rainforest slowly changing into a cloud forest. El Pianista Trail is also known as the most beautiful hike in Boquete and I totally agree. I’ll be happy to tell you everything you need to know so that you too can experience the El Pianista Trail at its best. Lace up your hiking boots and set out on an adventure with the El Pianista Trail in Boquete!

What does the El Pianista Trail look like?

The El Pianista Trail takes about four hours round trip and covers the same route both ways. The trail involves some uphill climbing, so it’s recommended to have a moderate level of fitness. The starting point of the El Pianista Trail is located four kilometers outside of downtown Boquete, next to Il Pianista restaurant. The first twenty minutes of the trail wind through an open meadow nestled between the mountains, and then you’ll venture into the lush jungle. Since the trail is not very crowded, you’re unlikely to encounter more than a few other hikers at a time. Overall, this trail offers a great workout and a serene escape from the bustle of Boquete.

The El Pianista Trail  takes you up about 600 meters (2,000 feet) in a few hours, allowing you to see the slow transformation of nature. The trail is not particularly challenging in terms of navigation, as the path is fairly well-defined and it’s difficult to go off course. However, the terrain can be challenging due to the high humidity and potential for rain. The trail can become muddy, so it’s important to watch your step and avoid slipping. Our guide provided us with a stick, which was a valuable tool for maintaining balance on the slippery terrain. Overall, I found the climb to be relatively easy – although it is an uphill hike, it’s a slow incline that’s not too difficult.

The cooler temperatures in the region make it challenging for many animals to thrive, so don’t expect to see a lot of wildlife during the El Pianista Trail. Instead, it’s the natural surrounding that makes this hike so memorable. The trail offers an array of breathtaking views, from the various shades of green in the leaves, plants, and trees to the awe-inspiring landscape itself. Since the trail takes you through the clouds, it can be misty and humid at times – but this only adds to the magical atmosphere, with the glimmering water droplets giving the nature a fairytale-like quality.

Do you need a guide on the El Pianista trail?

Since the tragic disappearance of two Dutch hikers, Kris and Lisanne, during the El Pianista Trail in 2014, it’s been strongly recommended to hike this trail with a guide. The memorial for Kris and Lisanne at the top of the mountain now marks the end point of the hike, as conditions beyond this point become much more dangerous. As a result, few people continue beyond the memorial. While the trail may appear straightforward on Maps.me, it’s still recommended to have a guide for added safety and peace of mind. I personally found it comforting to hike the trail with Feliciano, an experienced guide in Boquete who knows the area inside and out. Feliciano is a friendly and humorous guide who not only enjoys leading the El Pianista Trail, but also other trails in the area. He’s knowledgeable about the flora and fauna, which adds to the fascination of the trail. By hiking with a guide like Feliciano, you can experience the beauty of the El Pianista Trail with confidence and ease.

While hiring a guide for the El Pianista Trail does come at an additional cost, I found it to be well worth it. With a guide like Feliciano, you can experience the trail in a way that you might not on your own. Feliciano has a keen eye for the details of nature, and he knows how to navigate the sometimes challenging terrain. He even provides hiking sticks and fruit, which is a welcome treat during the hike.   You can contact Feliciano directly via WhatsApp at +507 66249940 to arrange a guided hike.

Tip: If you’re interested in practicing your Spanish during the hike, you can also book Feliciano’s son, Henry, as a guide. You can reach Henry via WhatsApp at +507 6848-6155.

Packing list for the El Pianista trail

Below are some essential items to bring with you on the El Pianista Trail.

  • Sturdy shoes – Good shoes are a must on this hike. They don’t necessarily have to be mountain boots, but sturdy hiking shoes with a good tread are necessary.
  • Rain jacket – A rain jacket or poncho is also highly recommended on the El Pianista Trail. In addition to the overall humidity and occasional falling drops, a (drizzling) rain shower is not uncommon. Consider also bringing a rain cover for your backpack.
  • Water –  Always bring enough water when hiking.
  • Jacket or vest –  In addition to a rain jacket, a normal vest or jacket is also nice to have. It is cooler in Boquete and during this hike, you will be gaining altitude where temperatures are lower and it can be windy on the top.
  • SnacksThis hike will take a few hours and requires physical effort. Bring some snacks such as fruit, bread, or energy bars to restore your energy.
  • Walking sticks – For this hike, it is really recommended to walk with a hiking stick. When booking Feliciano as your guide, he will bring one for you.

Cappadocia is an incredible destination for short hikes. The unique rock landscapes of Cappadocia were formed millions of years ago by three volcanic eruptions. The trails through these bizarre landscapes take you to some of the most beautiful places that you’ll hardly have to share with anyone. We did an amazing hike through the Rose and Red Valley. You walk through a canyon, pass by old cave churches, and enjoy beautiful viewpoints. Check out our tips and hiking route for the Red Valley hike!

The hiking route through Rose & Red Valley

There are a lot of hiking trails in the Rose & Red Valley, which can be a bit confusing at times. We spent a long time researching the hiking route in advance and eventually made a beautiful hike that we would like to share with you. The hiking trails are not very well marked, so make sure to have the map on your phone with you while hiking. We saved our hiking route in Komoot, which allows you to navigate offline.

In Komoot, it is indicated that the hike takes 1 hour and 15 minutes. However, this is not entirely accurate. If you walk briskly, it will take you about 2 hours. Allow 2.5 hours if you want to take it easy. Start the hike about 3 hours before sunset because the trail ends at a spectacular viewpoint where you can watch the sunset.

Explanation for using the Komoot app for free: You don’t have to pay to save this route for offline use. Download the Komoot app > click on the link to our route above > click on Save in the lower left corner > check Save for offline use > then click on Save again. To follow the route later during your trip, open the app > click on Profile at the bottom > under Tours, you will find Planned and your saved routes > open the downloaded route > click on the map. Do not click on the green button ‘start navigation’ because that feature is paid. Now you can see the entire route and your own location with a directional pointer, making it easy to find your way.

What does the Red Valley hike look like?

The hiking route is a loop, and the landscape constantly changes. We weren’t entirely sure where Rose Valley starts and where Red Valley begins, but it doesn’t really matter. At the beginning of the hike, the southern route takes you through a canyon. Occasionally, you’ll pass through a short tunnel and have to descend via a staircase. The end of the southern route is a flat path that is a bit less exciting. Right in the middle, you’ll find a simple cafe where you can have a drink.

The second part of the hike, the northern route, takes you to a higher part of the canyon. Now you’re no longer walking through the canyon but have a view of it. You’ll pass by a few ancient churches in the rocks. The church with the small cafe next to it is a beautiful church to explore from the inside. Here you’ll find ancient murals that are still well-preserved. Order a delicious fresh orange juice at the cafe and enjoy the view.

Afterward, you’ll start the last part of the Red Valley hike. The view becomes even more beautiful, and you can see for miles over the Cappadocian landscape. Find a nice spot a few hundred meters (feet) before the endpoint to watch the sunset. The rocks turn really red and pink during the sunset, so it’s highly recommended to do this hike in the late afternoon.

What to bring with you?

  • Hat or cap
  • Sunscreen
  • Jacket for when it gets cooler during the sunset
  • Good shoes
  • At least 1 liter of water per person
  • Snacks
  • Phone with a full battery with our route on Komoot

In the heart of Cappadocia, between the villages of Göreme and Uçhisar, lies the Pigeon Valley. This is a beautiful valley where you can take a nice short hike. From Göreme, you can easily enter the valley and immediately enjoy the silence and beauty of nature. The Pigeon Valley is not a crowded place, and we hardly encountered any other people among the impressive rock formations. However, we did have some lovely company from two friendly four-legged friends who enthusiastically joined us along the route. In this article, we’ll share our hiking route and tips for the Pigeon Valley hike in Cappadocia!

Fun fact: The Pigeon Valley has had the same residents for centuries, namely, pigeons. Many pigeon houses were built in the rock formations centuries ago by the residents of Cappadocia. The pigeon droppings were used as fertilizer, which helped improve crop yields.

The Hiking Route through Pigeon Valley

There are many different hiking paths through Pigeon Valley, and when you look at the map, it can be challenging to choose a route. Before our trip, we did some research and found a beautiful route. Unfortunately, it’s not possible to complete a circular hike, so you’ll have to walk back the same way you came. Alternatively, you can walk only the one-way route and take a taxi or bus from Uçhisar to Göreme or vice versa. The hike through Pigeon Valley is most beautiful in the first hours after sunrise, so it’s recommended to start early in the morning.

We’ve shared our hiking route on Komoot. When you open the route, you’ll see that it takes a different path near Göreme. This is a nice part to include in your hike as it takes you through the farmland. The path is a dead-end, so you’ll need to walk back afterward.

Explanation for using the Komoot app for free: You don’t need to pay to save this route for offline use. Download the Komoot app > click on the link to our route above > tap on “Save” at the bottom left > check the box “Save for offline use” > then tap “Save” again. To follow the route during your trip, open the app > tap on “Profile” at the bottom > under “Tours,” you’ll find “Planned,” where your saved routes are > open the downloaded route > tap on the map. Do not click on the green “Start navigation” button, as that function is paid. Now, you’ll see the entire route along with your current location and a directional guide to help you easily find your way.

What Does the Pigeon Valley Hike Look Like?

The hike through Pigeon Valley is very easy and not strenuous. If you walk both ways, you probably won’t need more than 2 hours. There’s almost no elevation difference, and the hiking paths are well-maintained. Pigeon Valley is perhaps the greenest spot in Cappadocia, thanks to the numerous trees and shrubs. You’ll walk through a small canyon for most of the way, with the last part ascending to climb out of it. Along the route, you’ll encounter several viewpoints offering breathtaking views of the massive rocks with their beautiful shapes and lines, sculpted by erosion. Keep an eye out for hidden caves as you hike.

The mountains of Tre Cime are iconic for the Dolomites. Three enormous peaks suddenly rise to a height of nearly 600 meters out of nowhere. In photos, it’s already impressive, but this is one of those places that is 10 times more impressive in person. We took a beautiful hike around the Tre Cime, ticking off the most beautiful spots in this area. In this article, we will share our hiking route along with useful tips for the hike.

Is it Drei Zinnen or Tre Cime di Lavaredo?

Many places in the Dolomites have both Italian and German names. Drei Zinnen (Three Peaks) is the German name, while Tre Cime di Lavaredo is the Italian name for this mountain. This is because the Dolomites belonged to Austria until 1918. Nowadays, the entire Dolomites region is part of Italy, but the German names have remained. We’ll use the name Drei Zinnen for convenience in this article.

How to Get to Drei Zinnen?

There are several options to reach Drei Zinnen.

By Car

The easiest way to get to Drei Zinnen is by car. The parking lot is located next to Rifugio Auronzo, the starting point of the hike. However, it’s not cheap. The toll road and parking cost $34 dollars per day or $50 dollars for a camper. About 5 km (3 miles) before the parking lot, you’ll pass a toll booth where you need to purchase a ticket. Keep this ticket safe as it is valid for 24 hours and must be shown on the return journey. Keep in mind that it can get very crowded here. There can be a long queue of cars, and the parking lot can even be full on the busiest days. The earlier you arrive, the less crowded it will be. The toll booth opens at 7:00 AM, and most people arrive between 9:00 AM and 10:00 AM.

Hiking

If you don’t want to pay $34 dollars for parking, you can choose to hike to Drei Zinnen. Park your car at Parcheggio Libero and hike for about 1.5 to 2 hours, which is approximately 3,280 to 4,370 feet (1,000 to 1,330 meters), to Rifugio Auronzo. Keep in mind that this is a fairly challenging hike with significant elevation gain. In our opinion, it’s a bit of a waste because you’ll expend a lot of energy before even reaching Drei Zinnen. We highly recommend paying the $30 and enjoying your visit to Drei Zinnen with full energy.

By Bus

During the summer months, buses depart from several locations to Drei Zinnen. Check the official website for more information and current bus schedules.

The Hike to the Most Beautiful Spots of Drei Zinnen

There is so much beauty to see around Drei Zinnen, but most people miss out because they don’t do their research. We have searched for the most beautiful spots and have outlined this hiking route for Drei Zinnen. The route is approximately 14 kilometers (8.7 miles) long, and it takes about 5 hours to hike. However, feel free to dedicate the whole day and explore one of the most beautiful places in the Dolomites at your own pace. Along the way, you’ll come across many mountain huts where you can enjoy some food and drinks. It’s also delightful to lie in the grass here and there and soak in the impressive views. The route is very accessible with minimal elevation gain, so 5 hours of hiking may sound more tiring than it actually is.

Let’s note: on our route, the last section to the Cadini Di Misurina viewpoint is missing. After completing the entire loop around Drei Zinnen, you will return to the parking lot at Rifugio Auronzo. From there, it takes about 30 minutes to walk to the Cadini Di Misurina viewpoint. Since the route is not yet available on Google Maps, we will describe exactly how to get there later on.

Overview of the Hike

Below you’ll find an overview of the hiking route broken down into sections. We’ve also described what you can see along the way for each section. If you find the hike too long, you can shorten it by skipping some sections.

1. Rifugio Auronzo to Forcella Lavaredo / 2.4 km (1.5 miles) – 50 min

2. Forcella Lavaredo to Rifugio Locatelli / 1.7 km (1.1 miles) – 30 min

3. Rifugio Locatelli to Malga Langalm / 3.6 km (2.2 miles) – 1.5 hours

4. Malga Langalm to Rifugio Auronzo / 2.6 km (1.6 miles) – 45 min

5. Rifugio Auronzo to Cadini Di Misurina / 1.5 km (0.9 miles) – 30 min

6. Cadini Di Misurina to Rifugio Auronzo / 1.5 km (0.9 miles) – 30 min

1. Rifugio Auronzo to Forcella Lavaredo

Distance: 2.4 km (1.5 miles) – 50 min

After parking your car, you’ll be face to face with the towering peaks of Drei Zinnen, and believe us, it’s breathtaking. You’ll walk eastward on a wide path and immediately be treated to fantastic views. After a short half-hour walk, you’ll reach the first mountain hut called Lavaredohutte. From Lavaredohutte, you’ll walk between grazing cows towards the Forcella Lavaredo viewpoint. This section involves some uphill walking, but it won’t be too exhausting. From Forcella Lavaredo, you’ll have one of the most amazing views of Drei Zinnen.

Tip: Take a short hike up the mountain from Forcella Lavaredo to get a distant view of Drei Zinnen and capture an amazing photo.

2. Forcella Lavaredo to Rifugio Locatelli

Distance: 1.7 km (1.1 miles) – 30 min

After enjoying the view, continue walking towards the next mountain hut. This hut is called Rifugio Locatelli, also known as Dreizinnenhütte, and is situated in a fantastic location amidst the rugged mountains. There are multiple paths to Rifugio Locatelli, but the wide path is the easiest as it is mostly flat. Only the last part involves a small climb. After about half an hour, you’ll arrive at Rifugio Locatelli, and on the mountain behind the hut, you’ll see three caves. From these caves, you’ll have a fantastic view of Drei Zinnen and can take some great photos. Afterwards, relax on the terrace or, during warm temperatures, on the grass and take a well-deserved break. You can enjoy a beer and a delicious plate of pasta with the best view of Drei Zinnen from here.

3. Rifugio Locatelli to Malga Langalm

Distance: 3.6 km (2.2 miles) – 1.5 hours

When walking to Malga Langalm, you have the option to take the route through the valley or a path closer to Drei Zinnen. If you choose the route through the valley, you’ll have to do more ascending and descending, and you’ll have less of a view of Drei Zinnen, so we opted for the other option. You’ll walk back a bit along the same route you came from, and then turn right. If in doubt, always check our route on Google Maps. Here, you leave the crowds behind because most people are not familiar with this route. The path goes through a beautiful area, and just before the mountain hut Malga Langalm, you’ll come across a few small lakes. It’s nice to take a short walk to these lakes, as you’ll likely have this place all to yourself!

4. Malga Langalm to Rifugio Auronzo

Distance: 2.6 km (1.6 miles) – 45 min

From Malga Langalm, you’ll walk back to Rifugio Auronzo where you started the day. The view of Drei Zinnen from here is less spectacular, but you’ll have a magnificent view of the surrounding area.

5. Rifugio Auronzo to Cadini Di Misurina

Distance: 1.5 km (0.9 miles) – 30 min

The day is not over yet because there’s still an impressive viewpoint planned. Unlike Drei Zinnen, Cadini Di Misurina is not crowded at all. We don’t understand why because it’s only a half-hour walk for a brilliant view. The hiking route from Rifugio Auronzo to Cadini Di Misurina is not shown in Google Maps. Download the app maps.me and the map of Northern Italy within it. Search for these coordinates: 46.601622, 12.295076. You can easily find it now, but don’t follow the entire path indicated in the app. The first part of the path in the app is correct. From Rifugio Auronzo, you’ll descend for quite a while until you eventually have to climb again. According to the app, you should follow the path to the left at this point, but you’ll quickly notice that it leads to a dangerous spot due to the narrow path and steep cliff. It’s better to go to the right and walk towards the coordinates.

6. Cadini Di Misurina to Rifugio Auronzo

Distance: 1.5 km (0.9 miles) – 30 min

Cadini Di Misurina was the last viewpoint for the day. Walk back the same way to Rifugio Auronzo and to your car at the parking lot.

The best time to visit Drei Zinnen

Drei Zinnen is one of the most popular attractions in the Dolomites, and during the peak season (July and August), it can be very crowded. In terms of weather, these are definitely good months to visit Drei Zinnen, but be prepared for crowds and try to go before 8:00 AM. In June and October, it’s much less crowded, but there’s a higher chance of less favorable weather. If it snows heavily early or late in the year, there’s even a chance that the road will be closed, and you won’t be able to drive into the area. If you choose to go before June or in October, we recommend going in late June or early October. September is the best month to visit Drei Zinnen. The crowds have decreased, and there’s a good chance of good weather.

Tips for the hike at Drei Zinnen

  • Start your day as early as possible to avoid crowds
  • Bring cash as the mountain huts only accept cash payment
  • Bring a water bottle as you can refill it at the mountain huts
  • Wear sturdy shoes
  • Pack a rain jacket and a small bottle of sunscreen in your backpack to be prepared for any kind of weather

Situated nearly 2000 meters (6561 feet) above sea level and nestled between the Italian mountain peaks, lies the vibrant blue mountain lake, Lago di Sorapis. It is known as one of the most beautiful lakes in the Dolomites. During winter, the surrounding mountains are covered in a thick layer of snow, which melts in spring, carrying fine gravel from the mountains into the lake. Part of this fine gravel settles on the lakebed, while the finest particles remain suspended in the water. This, combined with the play of light, creates the wonderful turquoise color. Read on for all our tips on hiking to the remarkable Lago di Sorapis.

Lago di Sorapis hike in numbers

There are two hiking routes that lead to Lago di Sorapis: Route 215 and Route 217. Route 215 is the most popular and easier to traverse compared to Route 217. Route 217 is more challenging and strenuous, involving more climbing and scrambling. This article is based on our experience of hiking Route 215.

Distance: 12 km in total
Duration: 4 to 5 hours in total
Elevation gain: 725 meters (2378 feet) in total

What does the hike to Lago di Sorapis look like?

This is the exact starting point of Route 215 to Lago di Sorapis. When we were there, there was a sign with Route 215 on a tree pointing in the wrong direction. Once you reach the starting point, you need to pass through the gate at the barrier and follow the wide gravel path.

The hike to Lago di Sorapis is not just about the destination; the hike itself is equally beautiful. The first few miles take you through a forest of tall pine trees on a relatively flat path. Afterward, the ascent begins, challenging your fitness. You’ll need to take occasional breaks to catch your breath and have a sip of water. Along the way, you’ll be treated to beautiful views. The outward journey is mainly uphill, while the return journey is downhill. There are a few sections where the path becomes more thrilling. For those with a fear of heights, it can be exciting as some areas have steep drop-offs. However, there are iron cables that you can hold on to for support. You’ll always be walking on a clearly marked path, indicated by white-red markings on trees or rocks, and there are steps built on the steeper sections.

After about 2 to 2.5 hours, you will reach the beautiful Lago di Sorapis. Suddenly, your tired legs will feel refreshed as you draw energy from this place! We recommend not just staying at the arrival point but walking a little to the right. This area is quieter and offers an amazing view of the lake and mountains. About 100 meters (328 feet) before reaching the lake, on the left, you will find a mountain hut called Rifugio Vandelli where you can have some food and drinks starting from 10:00. Don’t forget to refill your water bottle here for the return journey.

Depending on your fitness level, the hike can be challenging, but we’ve also seen many families and older people making the trek.

How to get to the starting point of the hike?

The easiest way to reach the starting point of the hike is by car. There aren’t many parking spaces, but everyone parks their cars on the roadside. If you don’t have a car, you can take the bus. Various buses depart from Cortina d’Ampezzo, but the departure times depend on the season. Check with your hotel for the current bus schedule.

Tip: Go to Lago di Sorapis as early as possible

It’s highly recommended to start the hike to Lago di Sorapis early in the morning. We began the hike around sunrise, and it was absolutely amazing. The first rays of sunlight turned the mountaintops around us orange, and the morning silence was delightful. Most people start the hike after breakfast, around 10:00, and especially during the summer months, there can be congestion on the narrow path. If you decide to start around 10:00, be prepared for potentially heavy crowds. It creates a sort of “train” of people, and you can no longer maintain your own pace. When we started the hike around sunrise, we encountered only about 5 other people. On the way back, we passed hundreds of people.

Note: Swimming in Lago di Sorapis is strictly prohibited as it would disturb the beautiful blue color of the water and disrupt the ecosystem. Throwing stones into the water is also not allowed.

Packing list for Lago di Sorapis

  • Hiking shoes
  • Rain gear
  • Layered clothing (depending on the weather)
  • Ample water
  • Optional: trekking poles
  • Snacks
  • Sunscreen

The Dolomites have been a popular travel destination for a long time, and especially in the summer, it can get crowded at popular spots. Fortunately, not everything has been discovered by the masses just yet. Gran Cir is one of those places that is incredibly beautiful but still remains undiscovered by many travelers. This is mainly due to the slightly challenging nature of the hike. If you’re up for a little adventure and enjoy going off the beaten track, the Gran Cir hike is perfect for you!

Climbing Gran Cir in Numbers

Duration: 2.5 hours in total
Distance: 2.8 km (1.7 miles) in total
Elevation Gain: 950 meters (3,117 feet) in total

Gran Cir is Officially a Via Ferrata

A via ferrata, or “iron path” in English, is a route where you can secure yourself to a steel cable attached to the rock face during difficult or dangerous sections. If you were to fall, you would remain attached to the cable. Many of the via ferratas in the Dolomites were built during World War I to allow soldiers and equipment to reach strategic locations as safely as possible.

Via ferratas come in various difficulty levels, and Gran Cir is considered one of the easiest. Even if you don’t have a via ferrata set at home, you can still do this hike in the summer or autumn when there is no ice or snow. The danger is minimal, and there is only one section of about 20 meters (66 feet) where you’ll encounter a cliff. This can be a bit thrilling, especially if you have a fear of heights, but you can hold onto the cable and no climbing technique is required. Below is a photo of this section.

Disclaimer: Of course, it’s always better to secure yourself, and you undertake the hike entirely at your own risk. We do not provide advice on this matter but only share our experience of the climb without using a via ferrata set.

What Does the Gran Cir Hike Look Like?

You can park your car at the paid parking lot of Rifugio Frara. From there, you’ll start with an easy climb towards the base of Gran Cir. After about 15 minutes, you’ll be standing under the massive rock, and this is where the steep climb begins through a narrow passage in the mountain, all the way to the top. The route is well-marked with red dots painted on the rocks. Halfway through, you’ll encounter the “exciting section” mentioned above. Additionally, there are a few short sections with metal cables that you can hold onto, but there are no more significant cliffs or drop-offs.

The Gran Cir hike is a steep ascent where you occasionally need to use your hands to climb up, but not like rock climbing. In other words, it’s more challenging than a regular hike where you only need to walk, but you don’t need climbing experience. Once you reach the top, you’ll see a large cross and enjoy a breathtaking view of the Gardena Pass and the surrounding mountains!

Tip: Weather conditions in the mountains can change quickly. If you see a storm approaching, it’s recommended to descend as quickly as possible because the top is very exposed to lightning, especially since the cross is made of metal.

My Experience Climbing Gran Cir

Due to Irene’s injury, I climbed Gran Cir alone. I didn’t have a via ferrata set and started the ascent 1.5 hours before sunrise. It was pitch dark, and a thick layer of mist hung in the air. I couldn’t see farther than a few meters or where I was heading. Using the navigation on my phone, I found the base of Gran Cir and started following the red dots painted on the rocks. It was freezing cold, and I quickly broke into a sweat due to the steep climb. Slowly, the darkness faded as dawn approached, but the thick mist obscured any view. I reached the section where you can secure yourself to the cable but couldn’t see how deep the abyss was. This was actually ideal as it made it easier to conquer my fear of heights. After about 1.5 hours, I stood alone at the top of Gran Cir, disappointed by the dense fog.

The sun had already risen, as I noticed green light reflecting from the mist at the bottom of the mountain, indicating the presence of the Gardena Pass. Just a minute later, the clouds suddenly cleared, revealing a magnificent view of the Gardena Pass and the enormous rock face opposite Gran Cir. It was a truly magical moment!

After taking about 100 photos, I had a small breakfast and began my descent. I encountered only one other person on the way back, passed the section with the abyss without being bothered by my fear of heights, and less than an hour later, I was back at the car. The Gran Cir hike is an incredible experience that I won’t soon forget.

How to Find the Right Path

Whether you have visibility or not, it’s always helpful to occasionally check your phone to ensure you’re on the right track. The best app to use is maps.me, where you can download the map of this area. The entire route may not be displayed, but you’ll see the location of Gran Cir and the path leading to the base of the mountain. Once you have the map, search for Gran Cir – Große Cirspitze – Grande Cir. You’ll see a trail on the left side of the location that doesn’t lead anywhere, and this is where the hike begins. Be careful not to confuse it with Piccolo Cir or Pitla Cir located nearby, as they are more challenging via ferratas. If you have a via ferrata set, it’s also fun to climb this mountain. On the way back, you can stop by Rifugio Jimmy (from 09:00) to enjoy some food and drinks.

Packing List for Gran Cir Hike

  • Optional: Via ferrata set
  • Thin gloves to hold onto the cold metal cable
  • Water and snacks
  • Layered clothing and a windbreaker as it can be very cold
  • Headlamp if you start before sunrise or plan to watch the sunset. You’ll want to keep your hands free for climbing, so the flashlight on your phone is not practical

Madeira is known for the fantastic hikes you can experience there, and it is indeed the best way to explore the beauty and diversity of Madeira. The landscapes are rugged, and the fauna is very diverse due to the various microclimates. Choosing from over 100 hiking trails can be challenging, so we’re sharing the top 5 most beautiful hikes with you. With these diverse hikes, you will experience the diversity of Madeira while enjoying breathtaking views. Jungle, waterfalls, high cliffs, sea views, and hiking above the clouds, you can tick them all off!

These 5 hiking routes are all easily doable for anyone who is moderately fit. You don’t need any climbing experience, and the trails are well-maintained with clear signage.

Tips for Hiking in Madeira

First of all, we want to emphasize that early morning or late afternoon are the best times to go hiking. Especially during the summer months, some trails can get crowded in the afternoon. Additionally, below are some tips that may come in handy.

Best Time to Hike in Madeira

Hiking in Madeira is possible throughout the year, but between April and September, you have the highest chance of good weather. Regardless of when you go, it’s always advisable to carry a raincoat with you. The weather can change quickly, and it varies across the island. It’s also a good idea to pack some warm clothing because it can be chilly in the high mountains. A fleece jacket and windbreaker are ideal as they are lightweight. Always check the weather forecast before heading to Madeira, not only for Funchal but also for places like Pico do Arieiro.

What to Bring

Comfortable hiking shoes are highly recommended. You can also manage with sneakers, but a little extra grip won’t hurt on the sometimes slippery trails. Make sure to take a fully charged phone with you because some hikes pass through tunnels where you can’t see a thing without a flashlight. Prior to your trip, download the maps.me app and the map of Madeira so that you can always refer to it if you’re unsure which turn to take while hiking.

PR Route Markings

The official hiking trails in Madeira are marked with the letters ‘PR,’ followed by a number, such as PR1 to PR22. These are the recommended official hiking routes by Madeira. You can find all these routes here. The PR numbering simply makes it easier for travelers who cannot pronounce the Portuguese names of the hikes. There are also many unofficial hiking trails with Portuguese names that do not have PR markings.

PR9 Levada do Caldeirão Verde Hike

You can’t visit Madeira without having a levada hike on your itinerary, and the PR9 Levada do Caldeirão Verde is one of the most beautiful ones. Not sure what a levada hike is? Please read the section below. This hike is relatively easy but moderately long, taking you through the dense jungle of Madeira, passing through tunnels, and offering breathtaking viewpoints. With good weather, you can gaze down into the gorge hundreds of meters (3280.84 feet) below at certain spots. Thankfully, there are fences along the trail for safety. The levada runs alongside a rock wall that is covered in various types of moss and ferns, creating a vibrant green scenery. After walking approximately 7 kilometers (4.35 miles) on a mostly flat path, you will reach one of the highest waterfalls in Madeira. It’s a delightful spot to rest before starting the return journey.

Read our complete experience and tips for the PR9 to get a better understanding of the hike.

Distance: 13 kilometers (8.08 miles) in total
Duration: 4 to 5 hours
Elevation difference: Approximately 100 meters (328.08 feet)

What is a levada hike? Levada hikes are characteristic of Madeira. A levada is an irrigation channel, and there are over 3,000 kilometers (1864.11 miles) of levadas throughout Madeira. Some were built as early as the 16th century. Levadas wind along the rugged mountains, carrying rainwater from one side of the island to the other, as it rains much more in the north than in the south. These levadas form beautiful walking paths across the mountains.

PR8 Ponta de São Lourenço Hike

The PR8 is also a real must-do as it offers the most beautiful cliffs in Madeira. The trail traverses the hills of the narrow peninsula in the east. The hike starts at Ponta de São Lourenço and leads to the viewpoint of Ponta do Furado. From here, you can enjoy views of uninhabited islands and the blue ocean. On clear days, you can even see the neighboring island of Porto Santo. The views along the way are magnificent and completely different from many other places in Madeira. For a large part of the year, this is one of the driest areas on the island, and the vegetation takes on a beautiful golden yellow color.

During winter and spring, the grasses and other small plants turn green, creating a completely different landscape. Although it may seem like not much grows here, there are actually 138 different plant species, 31 of which are unique to Madeira. The trail is very easy to walk and not at all strenuous, except for the final stretch to the viewpoint, which involves a relatively steep climb with some high steps that can be slippery after rain.

Distance: 7 km
Duration: 2 to 3 hours
Elevation difference: 470 meters (1541.99 feet)

PR1 Vereda do Arieiro Hike

Ready for a challenging workout? The PR1 is our favorite hike in Madeira due to its breathtaking views over the island’s highest peaks. You start at an elevation of 1,818 meters (5,965.88 feet) at Pico do Arieiro and walk from here to the highest mountain on the island, Pico Ruivo, at an elevation of 1,862 meters (6,109.91 feet). The elevation difference between these two giants may not be significant, but to reach there, you’ll have to climb and descend many stair steps. The total elevation difference adds up to around 1,650 meters (5,413.39 feet), making it a quite challenging hike. Fortunately, the views make the effort more than worthwhile.

Start this hike at sunrise because Pico do Arieiro is the best spot to witness the sunrise in Madeira. Often, you’ll find yourself above the clouds, and combined with the 360-degree view and the warm colors of the sunrise, it creates a magical experience. If this hike sounds a bit too strenuous for you, don’t worry, there are also shorter variations of this route available.

Distance: 11 km
Duration: 6 hours
Elevation difference: 1650 meters (5413 feet)

PR6 Levada 25 Fontes & Risco Waterfall Hike

The PR6 and PR6.1 are the most popular levada hikes that you can easily combine. They are highly accessible due to the mostly flat trail and take you to two beautiful waterfalls. One waterfall is several feet high, while the other features 25 separate streams of water flowing into a pool with greenish-blue water. You might even feel like you’re somewhere in Southeast Asia. Since this hike is very popular, it’s recommended to start early to avoid crowds and large groups later in the day.

Boca do Risco Hike

The Boca do Risco hike is a fantastic trail along the high cliffs of Madeira’s coastline. It’s an easy walk on a mostly flat path, with occasional steep drops along the way. The cliff is several hundred feet high and covered with various plant species. The green cliffs create an amazing color combination with the deep blue sea, and the breathtaking views explain why Madeira is sometimes referred to as the “Hawaii of Europe.”

The PR1 Vereda do Arieiro is the most famous hike in Madeira and one of the most beautiful day hikes we have ever done. If you’re lucky with the weather, this hike will not only be a literal but also a figurative highlight of your trip. The views over the island’s highest peaks are phenomenal, and the hike itself is an exciting and challenging journey full of variety and natural beauty. You start at an altitude of 1,818 meters (5,965 feet) at Pico do Arieiro, where you can first enjoy a sunrise high above the clouds. After that, the hike to Pico Ruivo, the highest mountain in Madeira, begins. Continue reading for all our tips!

The PR1 Vereda do Arieiro hike in a nutshell

Officially, this is a point-to-point hike, which means you don’t walk in a circle but rather towards a final point and then back the same way. The numbers below are based on the assumption that you walk both ways. However, you can also arrange transportation through this one-way tour so that you don’t have to walk back. In that case, you choose the one-way route and at the end, you only walk a few miles on an easier path to where cars can reach to pick you up. This is certainly a good option for less experienced hikers who still want to see the PR1 but don’t want to walk the entire way back with the steep changes in altitude.

Distance: 13 km or 9 km one-way route
Duration: 6 to 7 hours or 3.5 to 4 hours one-way route
Elevation difference: 1,650 meters (5,413 feet) or 900 meters (2,953 feet) one-way route
Difficulty:
Challenging due to the changes in altitude and duration, but with the one-way route, it becomes easier.

What does the PR1 Vereda do Arieiro hike look like?

It’s best to start the day early and watch the sunrise at Pico do Arieiro. This is actually the most beautiful spot on the island to see the sun rise. Right by the parking lot, you’ll find the Miradouro Juncal viewpoint. It’s often crowded here during sunrise because many tours also start their day here. Fortunately, not all of these people are going to hike the PR1. Most of them get back in the van to visit other places. If you prefer a quieter spot, make sure to arrive half an hour earlier and walk to Miradouro Do Ninho da Manta (see photo below). It’s along the PR1 route and tends to be much quieter. Plus, you’ll be ahead of many other hikers, so you’ll have the trail mostly to yourself for the rest of the day.

Tip: From the parking lot, walk uphill towards the large round building. The Miradouro Juncal viewpoint is to the right of it, and the hike starts to the left of the building.

The route is clearly marked, and it’s difficult to get lost. The first hour is actually the most beautiful part of the trail. You’ll walk on a path with spectacular views on both sides, occasionally with a significant drop behind the railing. Flowers and green bushes adorn the mountains everywhere. This first part, until the first tunnel, is a continuous descent with a number of stairs. The rest of the route includes multiple tunnels, more beautiful viewpoints, additional stairs, and eventually the final ascent to the top of Pico Ruivo. Just before this last climb, you’ll find a café where you can have a drink, use the restroom, and refill your water bottle. The way back follows the same path but feels even more challenging because your legs are already tired. Especially the final uphill climb is tough but at the same time, a great workout! Our tactic was to climb the stairs extremely slowly. This keeps your heart rate somewhat low, and you don’t have to catch your breath constantly.

The shorter ‘one-way’ variant of the PR1

We walked the route both ways because our car was parked at Pico do Arieiro. Hiking the entire route back makes the hike quite challenging. We found it to be a great challenge, but we understand if you prefer to skip the return journey. For those who prefer to walk only one way, there’s the option to be dropped off by a driver at Pico do Arieiro, do the hike, and have them pick you up at the endpoint. This way, you don’t have to walk all the way back, yet you still get to experience the entire PR1. This transfer is the perfect solution. You’ll be at Pico do Arieiro at sunrise and then walk, without a guide and at your own pace, to Pico Ruivo where the van will be waiting to take you back to Funchal.

If you have your own car and don’t want to incur additional costs for a transfer, you can walk only the first part of the hike and then walk back to the parking lot. However, you’ll unfortunately miss a significant portion of the hike and Pico Ruivo, so it’s actually a pity.

How to get to Pico do Arieiro?

By rental car: It takes about 30 to 40 minutes to drive from Funchal to the parking lot of Pico do Arieiro. The road uphill is a winding mountain road where overtaking is difficult. If you happen to be behind a slow driver, it will take a bit longer.

With a tour: If you don’t have your own transportation, there are several options. If you want to do the hike during the day with a guide, you can book the guided tour. If you prefer to hike only one way at your own pace and be dropped off at Pico do Arieiro and picked up at Pico Ruivo, then the one-way transfer we mentioned above is ideal.

Tips for the PR1 Vereda do Arieiro hike

Here are some useful things to keep in mind.

Wear layers

The weather in the mountains can literally be different every day. We’ve been to Pico do Arieiro three times and had completely different weather each time. One time, we were shivering in layers, a windbreaker, and a hat due to the cold, while another time we were enjoying the sun in a t-shirt. So make sure you’re prepared for all types of weather. In early spring, fall, and winter, thin gloves can come in handy. If it’s not cold, you can always leave some extra clothing in the car.

Don’t make the PR1 your first hike

The PR1 is probably the most challenging hike you’ll do in Madeira. It’s wise to first do one or more shorter hikes to get a feel for it.

Wear good shoes

This tip might be obvious, but there are still people who do this hike in sandals. Proper hiking shoes are highly recommended, but sturdy sneakers can work if you don’t have hiking shoes. The paths are well-maintained. However, they can be slippery, so having some extra grip is definitely helpful.

Don’t forget…

Just before the climb to Pico Ruivo, you can buy food and drinks, and they only accept cash. Bring enough water and snacks with you. You can refill your water bottle at the café just before Pico Ruivo. Also, sunscreen is essential on a clear day.

The highlight of Madeira is the levada hikes, and PR9 Caldeirão Verde is definitely one of the most beautiful levada hikes on the island. A levada is an irrigation channel, and some were built as early as the sixteenth century. In total, there are over 3000 km of levadas winding along the rugged mountains of Madeira. Levadas carry rainwater from one side of the island to the other because it rains much more in the north than in the south. PR9 Caldeirão Verde takes you through a dense jungle, where you’ll feel like you’re in a South American rainforest. Everywhere you look, there are tropical plants, and you’ll also be treated to beautiful views and waterfalls. Read all our tips below.

The PR9 Levada do Caldeirão Verde hike in a nutshell

Distance: 13 km in total (8 miles)
Duration: 4 to 5 hours
Elevation difference: approximately 100 meters (328 feet)
Difficulty: Easy

What does the hike look like?

The trail of the PR9 Caldeirão Verde hike is mostly flat, making it very easy. You walk along the levada on a narrow path. While hiking, you’ll be rewarded with magnificent views, but keep your eyes on the path as there are often steep drops, fortunately with a railing. During the hike, you’ll pass through four tunnels. In some of these tunnels, you’ll need to duck here and there to avoid hitting your head. So don’t forget to bring your phone with you, as you can use it as a flashlight.

After about 2 hours of walking, you’ll reach one of the highest waterfalls in Madeira, the Caldeirão Verde waterfall. The water plunges down a staggering 100 meters (328 feet). It’s a lovely spot to take a break and have something to eat or drink. If cold water doesn’t deter you, be sure to bring your swimwear and take a refreshing dip in the icy water. That will certainly replenish your energy for the return journey! After visiting the Caldeirão Verde waterfall, you start the journey back. It’s the same path you took to get there.

Practical tips: There is a paid parking lot at the beginning and endpoint of the hike, where you’ll also find a charming cottage where you can have a cup of coffee and a small snack. When you return, you can pay for parking at the larger cottage next to it. Your exit ticket is valid for 10 minutes, so if you want to have something to drink, it’s better to do it before paying for your exit ticket. There are toilets in the parking lot, and you’ll need $0.60 to open the door.

How to get to PR9 Levada do Caldeirão Verde?

PR9 Levada do Caldeirão Verde is a hiking trail in the northern part of Madeira, near the village of Santana, and is about a 45-minute drive from Funchal. There are several ways to reach it.

By rental car: By far the easiest way to reach the starting point of the hike is by rental car. The parking lot is called Queimadas Parking Lot, and you can find its location on Google Maps here. Please note that if you set the route directly to the parking lot, Google Maps may not provide the correct directions for the last part. Therefore, first navigate to Continente Modelo Santana, and from there, Google Maps will give you the correct route to the parking lot.

With a tour: If you don’t have a car, this tour is a great option to do the hike. You’ll be picked up from your hotel in Funchal and taken to the starting point of the hike. You’ll walk with a group and a guide who will teach you all about the nature and Madeira. After the hike, you’ll be dropped off at your hotel. It’s ideal if you don’t have your own transportation!

By public transportation: A slower but cheaper option is to travel by bus. From Funchal, buses depart to the nearby village of Santana. You can take bus lines 56, 103, and 138, and the journey takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. You’ll see all the details by typing the route into Google Maps and clicking on the public transportation icon. At the bus stop in Santana, there is a taxi stand where you can take a taxi for the final 6 km (3.7 miles) to the starting point of PR9.

Extra tips for the PR9 Levada do Caldeirão Verde hike

  • Bring a headlamp/flashlight for the tunnels or make sure your phone has enough battery
  • Bring a rain jacket as it often rains on this side of Madeira
  • Wear sturdy shoes

When traveling through Croatia, there’s a good chance you’ll have the waterfalls of Krka and the Plitvice Lakes on your itinerary. These are two remarkable highlights of a trip through Croatia, but what few people know is that there’s something beautiful hidden between these two places. When you drive from Krka to the Plitvice Lakes (or vice versa), you’ll pass through the Velebit mountain range. Most people follow their navigation and take the tunnel that cuts through it, but in our opinion, that’s a missed opportunity because the mountain route is fantastic, and you can take a beautiful hike to the mountain peak called Tulove Grede.

Northern Velebit National Park and Tulove Grede

In the Velebit mountain range, you’ll find two of Croatia’s eight national parks. The northern part is officially known as Northern Velebit National Park, where “Sjeverni” means North. In the southern part of the Velebit mountain range, you’ll find Paklenica National Park. Both offer various short and long hiking trails, and if you have the time, you can even embark on multi-day treks visiting different mountain huts. If you don’t have several days but still want to experience the beauty of the Velebit mountain range, we recommend climbing Tulove Grede.

What’s the hike to Tulove Grede like?

Tulove Grede is one of the most extraordinary peaks in the Velebit mountain range. The light gray rocks almost shoot straight up amidst the grass. From the highway, you can already see that this part of the mountain is quite different from the rest. After a scenic drive along an unpaved winding road, you’ll suddenly find yourself at the base of the Tulove Grede peaks. You can park your car here and start the climb. Since you’re already at a considerable height, the views are impressive right from the start. The initial part of the hike takes you uphill around the backside of Tulove Grede. Once you’re among the peaks of Tulove Grede, the landscape becomes even more stunning, and the farther you want to go, the more climbing and scrambling you’ll need to do. You can climb all the way to the top or simply enjoy the views halfway up. The hike typically takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on how many breaks you take.

Tip: The route is fairly well marked, but it can be helpful to download the map of Croatia in the maps.me app. This will show you the hiking trail.

How to Get to Tulove Grede

Tulove Grede is indeed on the route between Krka and the Plitvice Lakes, but you’ll need to take a slight detour to reach it. Instead of going through the tunnel, you’ll be driving over the mountains, which offers a scenic journey with a few picturesque stops along the way. This detour will add approximately 45 to 60 minutes to your travel time. Beforehand, make sure to download the map of Croatia in Google Maps and save the location of the parking lot because you may experience a lack of mobile network coverage in the Velebit mountain range.

Additionally, it’s important to note that after the climb, you can continue on the road and don’t have to backtrack. Since Tulove Grede is situated exactly halfway along the mountain route, Google Maps might sometimes suggest retracing your steps to take the tunnel, but that’s not necessary. You can proceed along the mountain road, and Google Maps will update the route after a few minutes. There are no gas stations in the mountains, so make sure you have enough fuel, water, and snacks with you.
